NEW DELHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has unearthed a wide-ranging corruption racket involving irregularities in the inspection and regulatory processes of medical colleges across India, registering a First Information Report (FIR) that names 36 accused individuals, including former University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman D P Singh and several officials from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. D P Singh, who currently serves as the Chancellor of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), headed the UGC from 2018 to 2021. Other accused include senior officials from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and representatives of private medical colleges nationwide. According to the FIR, a copy of which is with TNIE, the case centres around an extensive criminal conspiracy involving the unauthorised sharing of confidential regulatory information, manipulation of statutory inspections, and widespread bribery to grant favourable outcomes to private institutions. CBI officials said the leaked data included inspection schedules, names of assessors, and internal assessments. This allowed medical colleges to stage fraudulent conditions for inspections including deploying ghost faculty members, admitting fake patients, tampering with biometric attendance systems, and bribing assessors for favourable reports. The FIR alleges that health ministry officials photographed internal files including confidential remarks by senior officials and shared them via personal devices with intermediaries linked to private colleges. Among those allegedly involved in receiving or distributing the leaked data are Virendra Kumar of Gurgaon, Manisha Joshi of Dwarka in New Delhi, and prominent medical education figures such as Suresh Singh Bhadoria, chairman of Index Medical College in Indore, and Mayur Raval, registrar of Geetanjali University in Udaipur. Virendra Kumar is said to have had close ties with Jitu Lal Meena, then a whole-time member of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB). Meena allegedly received bribes through hawala transactions facilitated by Kumar, who reportedly distributed funds to secure regulatory favours. Officials claim part of the illicit funds was used to finance the construction of a Hanuman temple in Rajasthan at an estimated cost of 75 lakh. The FIR also outlines the southern network of the racket, reportedly run by B Hari Prasad from Kadiri, Andhra Pradesh. Working with his associates Ankam Rambabu in Hyderabad and Krishna Kishore in Visakhapatnam, Prasad was allegedly instrumental in arranging dummy faculty and facilitating backdoor regulatory approvals for bribes.

UDIPUR: A 29-year-old man was arrested from Chittorgarh for allegedly raping a French woman who had come to Udaipur for an advertisement shoot, officials said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Pushparaj alias Siddharth Ojha, a resident of Gangrar in Chittorgarh, owns a casting company and has worked on films, music videos and television serials, police officials said, adding that he has been living in Udaipur for the past eight years. Pushparaj's company hired the woman for a mobile advertisement shoot, which took place on June 22 at various locations in Udaipur, including Lake Pichola, Sajjangarh Fort and local restaurants, Udaipur SP Yogesh Goyal said. Following the shoot, the crew allegedly held a party at a cafe near Tiger Hill. After the party, Pushparaj took the woman to his flat in Sukher under the pretext of smoking and allegedly sexually assaulted her there. Pushparaj confessed to the crime during questioning, the police claimed. Meanwhile, some local Congress workers, led by city Congress president Fateh Singh Rathore, allegedly confronted Pushparaj as the police brought him in for questioning. Some even allegedly attempted to assault him, pulling at his arms while he was being taken to the SP office. Additional SP Umesh Ojha and DSP Kailash Chandra intervened to calm the situation and disperse the crowd. The party workers also held a protest outside the collectorate regarding law and order issues.Casting agent arrested for raping French woman after Udaipur ad shoot
Villagers protest against RRVUNL, Adani in Chhattisgarh over unkept promises of development
RAIPUR: Local tribal villagers led by the regional political outfit Gondwana Gantantra party (GGP) blocked the transportation of coal via road-rail route at Ambikapur, 330 km north of Raipur, while registering their symbolic protest against the Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL) and Adani Group, alleging 'the promised commitments were not being fulfilled'. Besides obstructing the movement of coal supplies on the road, the protestors also placed rocks on railway tracks to block transportation. The Parsa East-Kente Basan coal block at Ambikapur in north Chhattisgarh was awarded to RRVUNL. The Adani Group entered into an agreement as Mine Developer-cum-Operator (MDO) under a contract. Police and administrative officials were deployed during the protest rally and demonstration. Protestors also placed rocks on railway tracks to block transportation. We registered a strong protest with our symbolic demonstration against the administration, besides the arbitrary stance of the RRVUNL and Adani group management for unfulfilled promises after the launch of the project. The transportation of coal, either by road or railway, came to a standstill with our protest. The promises like employment for locals, regional development, CSR-related works, 100-bedded hospital among others proclaimed during the public hearing organised ahead of the execution of the project here, are yet to be attained in the affected villages, claimed Jagannath Singh Keram, GGP national spokesperson, who also alleged that major works of the project are allotted to outsiders and local inhabitants remain ignored. Ambikapur collector Vilas Sandipan Bhoskar confirmed to TNIE that he had received a six-page GGP memorandum highlighting various grievances and elucidating the local people's demands, but he didn't reveal the district administration's next course of action. Ban Singh Netam, sub-divisional magistrate of Udaipur block, where the coal block has been allocated to RRVUNL, said that the protest was organised peacefully and no nuisance reported.

French tourist raped in Udaipur; accused absconding
JAIPUR: In a shocking case in Udaipur, a female tourist from France was raped late on Monday evening. According to the police, the accused met the tourist at 'The Greek Farm Caf and Resto' in the Tiger Hill area, partied with her, and then lured her to his rented accommodation in Sukher under the pretext of showing her around. It was here that he allegedly committed the crime. Badgaon police station officer Puran Singh Rajpurohit stated that the tourist had arrived in Udaipur from Delhi on June 22, 2025, and was staying in a hotel under the Ambamata police station area. A party was held at a Restro Cafe located at Tiger Hill. From the party, the accused boy took the foreign girl to his rented house in Sukher on the pretext of taking her for a stroll. According to the registered case, the accused raped her at her house. After the incident, the victim admitted herself to a private hospital, where she received medical attention. The hospital administration informed the police, and an FIR was lodged by the tourist from the hospital bed. According to the complaint, the accused invited the woman for a smoke, and despite her insistence to be taken back to the hotel, refused. When the tourist refused to hug him in the apartment, he raped her. The victim was unable to call for help as her phone was discharged. The police have launched a search for the absconding suspect and have assured a thorough investigation. Meanwhile, the incident has triggered political backlash. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot expressed concern over the rising crime rate, stating on Twitter: The rape of a French tourist in Udaipur exposes the deteriorating law and order situation in Rajasthan to the world. Women feel unsafe across the state, yet the BJP government remains unconcerned. The incident comes shortly after the United States issued a travel advisory warning female tourists about rising incidents of sexual assault in certain states of India. There are growing fears that Rajasthan may also be added to this advisory list in the near future.
