Several Rajasthan families among thousands of Indians stranded in Nepal following unrest
JAIPUR:Among the thousands of Indian tourists who remain stranded in Nepal following the violent agitation that broke out on September 8, are several families from Rajasthan. They include the relatives of independent MLA from Bayana, Ritu Banawat, and former Udaipur councilor Anil Singhal. On Wednesday, Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani confirmed that MLA Banawat and her family were stranded in Nepal. He said the state government is making every possible effort for their safe return and is in constant touch with the Indian Embassy. The evacuation process will begin as soon as the situation improves, Devnani assured. Among those in serious trouble is former councillor Anil Singhal and his family, who were on a trip to Nepal along with 35 other tourists from Udaipur district. Singhal said he had travelled from Udaipur to Kathmandu on September 5 to visit the Pashupatinath temple. His return flight to Delhi was scheduled for September 12, but all flights were then cancelled after the violence erupted. The sudden protests had left Singhal and his group stranded in a hotel in Pokhara, nearly 500 km from Kathmandu. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has expressed concern over the safety of Rajasthani citizens stranded in Nepal. He appealed to those affected to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy and make use of the helpline numbers. The state government, he said, is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the Centre and the Indian Embassy. Indian Aviation ministry asks airlines to operate special flights to and from Kathmandu To assist families back home, the Rajasthan Police has set up a special cell at Police Headquarters in Jaipur under the directions of Director General of Police Rajiv Sharma. I also appeal to the Government of India to take urgent steps for their safe return, Gehlot wrote. Meanwhile, domestic and international flights in Nepal remain suspended due to the ongoing unrest, forcing thousands of tourists to remain confined in hotels across various cities. 20 custodial deaths reported in Rajasthan in two years; most cases under probe
JAIPUR: Rajasthan has recorded 20 deaths in police custody over the past two years, most of them attributed to deteriorating health conditions. According to official data, five people died of heart attacks, while one person committed suicide by jumping into a well. Investigations into the remaining 14 cases are still pending. So far, no policeman has been found guilty in any of the custodial deaths. However, negligence on the part of sentries on duty has been acknowledged in some cases, leading to 17 CCA notices being issued against two constables. The information came in response to a question raised in the Rajasthan Assembly by senior Congress MLA Rafiq Khan regarding custodial deaths between August 2023 and August 2025. Among the most discussed incidents were the deaths of two bullion traders in Augustone at Kankroli police station in Rajsamand district and another at Rishabhdev police station in Udaipur district. Both had been brought in for questioning on charges of buying stolen jewellery. Activists point out that in many such cases, requests filed under the Right to Information (RTI) are met with evasive responses from police officials, citing faulty cameras, hard disks being full, lack of storage, no backup, or confidentiality concerns. This, they allege, prevents the truth from ever coming out of police lockups. The Supreme Court has repeatedly emphasised that CCTV cameras in police stations are not meant to breach privacy but to ensure fairness and transparency. In 2018, the court directed all states to install functional CCTV systems to prevent human rights violations. Recently, the apex court took suo motu cognisance of non-functional cameras in police stations and directed that a PIL be filed on the matter. Rafeek Khan, the Congress MLA who raised this issue, is hardly satisfied. He asserted,There is no genuine reason in the majority of the cases. Most of the deaths have happened due to police negligence and excessive torture. In the name of action, they have taken action only against only two constables. He also questioned if only constables are in charge of police stations and remarked, No action has been taken against any Dy SP, nor any SHO, nor has any IPS officer been held responsible. What kind of system is this? The responsibility has been put only on the constable, and the matter has been covered up. I will ask a supplementary question on this. Those who are responsible should be punished. This sorry state exists in Rajasthan, although the state's top cop, DGP Rajeev Kumar Sharma, has repeatedly stressed in review meetings that there would be 'zero tolerance for custodial deaths' and all preventive measures must be enforced.

Om Birla urges swift relief as heavy rains wreak havoc across Rajasthan
JAIPUR: As heavy rains and flood-like conditions persist in several parts of Rajasthan, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday said that providing maximum relief to the affected people should be the administrations top priority. Chairing a review meeting on relief and disaster management with officials of Kota and Bundi districts at the Collectorate auditorium, Birla issued strict directions that no negligence or lapses in the survey of damage would be tolerated. The Speaker who is the Lok sabha MP from Kota asserted, I have personally visited the affected areas and seen the situation. Many families have lost everything. Relief must be provided with both speed and sensitivity. Birla directed officials to conduct damage assessments of houses, livestock, and crops with complete honesty and ensure that all eligible families receive assistance as per the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) norms. He also instructed that affected families should not be asked to produce house leases while applying for relief, as no such provision exists in the guidelines. Special care should be taken so that families whose houses have been damaged get maximum help, including compensation for loss of utensils and clothes, he said. The Agriculture Department reported that soybean and urad crops have suffered extensive losses due to excessive rainfall. Birla asked officials to prioritize compensation for small and marginal farmers and ordered that road repairs be started immediately, along with checking the drainage system and restoring electricity and water supply in affected areas. JAIPUR: Six people, including four minors and a government school teacher, died in separate rain -related incidents as heavy to very heavy rain continued to batter parts of Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, leading to flood-like situations in many areas, officials said on Sunday. The weather department informed that in the last 24 hours till 8:30 am on Sunday Dausa logged the highest rainfall of 29 cm. Many other areas received rainfall below 29 cm during the same period. According to officials, several areas in Bundi, Sawaimadhopur and Kota districts are facing flood-like situations with rescue and relief works underway. In Jhalawar, four people including two government teachers were swept away in floodwaters while trying to cross a submerged low bridge in their car on Sunday. Despite warnings from locals, they attempted to drive through the overflowing water on Changeri Pullia, near Gagron fort, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Abhishek Charan said. Upon receiving information from residents around 2 pm, a search operation was launched. The car was located 10-15 metres away in deep water around 5 pm. The official said that the bodies of -- Neeraj Singh Shekhawat (49), from Vijay Nagar in Ganganagar and teacher at a senior secondary school in Kudayla, and Hari Ballabh Khati (60) of Kudayla village -- were found on the back seat of the car. Two others, Venugopal, a teacher at the same school and resident of Sambhar in Jaipur, and Lekhraj Mali (35) of Kudayla village, who were on the front seats, are feared missing, he said. In view of the alert for very heavy rainfall, collectors in Jaipur, Nagaur, and Ajmer declared holiday for schools on Monday and Tuesday. Several areas in Jaipur faced waterlogging, as the city continued to reel under rain for the second consecutive day. Roads were inundated in many parts of the city with water levels reaching knee height. This disrupted traffic, causing inconvenience to commuters, especially in the Walled City areas. District Collector Jitendra Soni ordered all government and private schools to remain shut on Monday and Tuesday, given the forecast for heavy rain. Several areas also reported power outages due to faults in transformers and power lines. Barkat Nagar, Tonk Phatak and other areas faced electricity disruption multiple times on Saturday night, with the technical team taking nearly seven hours to resolve the issue. The Jaipur Development Authority decided to close two parks -- Kishan Bagh and Swarn Jayanti Park -- near Vidyadhar Nagar, for public from Monday to Wednesday, as waterlogging turned the parks into muddy zones. Four minors drowned in the rainwater-filled Kunwari mines of Dabok area in Udaipur on Sunday. The incident occurred when -- Laxmi Gameti (14), Bhavesh (14), Rahul (12) and Shankar (13) -- had gone to graze goats in the nearby fields, police said. Later, the four entered the mine to bathe and slipped into deep water, police said. After the incident, a large crowd of villagers gathered at the site. Upon receiving information police teams went to the spot and pulled out the bodies with the help of locals. Villagers and family members have demanded action against the mine owner, Assistant Sub-Inspector Manohar Singh Devda said. The weather department has predicted that the heavy rain may continue in some areas of the state for the next three to four days. Flood relief and rescue teams remained on the ground and assisted affected residents in Nagaur as several areas have been waterlogged. JAIPUR: Film producer Amit Jani, who has backed Udaipur Files based on the brutal murder of Kanhaiyalal, has once again received threatening comments on social media. Police have detained a youth in connection with the matter and launched an investigation. According to officials, Jani was recently admitted to a private hospital after complaining of chest pain during his visit to Ahmedabad and Udaipur for the films release. On being discharged on Wednesday, he alleged that Bangladeshi elements were trying to mislead locals and instigate violence against him. Like Kanhaiyalal, I am also being provoked to be murdered, he claimed. A threatening comment was allegedly posted by a man identified as Mohammad Shahid. Acting on Janis complaint, police detained Shahid for questioning. Jani further alleged that he received a chilling message reading, We are 700 meters away and will send tiffin, which he interpreted as a bomb threat. In another instance, a Bangladeshi youth named Hamad reportedly commented, Tiffin is expensive, send a knife. Superintendent of Police Yogesh Goyal confirmed that Shahid has been taken into custody and interrogated. We are probing whether these are simply online threats or connected to a larger network. Given the allegations of Pakistani and Bangladeshi links, the matter is being taken very seriously, he said. Police sources added that the threats have created an atmosphere of tension in Udaipur. Udaipur Files , directed by Bharat S Srinet and Jayant Sinha and produced by Amit Jani, features Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiyalal, with Rajneesh Duggal and Preeti Jhangiani in key roles. The film revisits the horrific incident of June 28, 2022, when tailor Kanhaiya Lal Teli was beheaded in Udaipur by two men after he shared a social media post supporting BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The accused had filmed the act and circulated the video online, triggering nationwide outrage. The films release reignited political debate. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot had accused the Centre of delaying justice to Kanhaiyalals family.

JAIPUR: Mishaps in Rajasthans government schools simply refuse to stop. After last months tragedies in Jhalawar and Jaisalmer, which claimed the lives of eight students, a girl died after the balcony of an under-construction government school collapsed on her in Udaipur's Kotda. Taking swift action, the government has held local officials guilty of negligence. The accident took place on Independence Day at PM Shri Government Higher Primary School in Patharpadi village under Kotda police station. Strict measures have rapidly been initiated. Acting Assistant Engineer (AEN) Hem Singh has been suspended and the services of the contractual civil consultant have been terminated. In addition, instructions have been issued to register an FIR against the contractor firm, M/s Divyanshi Enterprises. Hem Singh, originally appointed as a Grade III teacher, had been working as an AEN for the past 11 years. JEN Anil Kashyap, who was drawing a salary of Rs 15,000, had been handling the technical monitoring of school buildings for nearly 22 years. Villagers allege that substandard materials were being used in the construction of the school. Following the incident, all construction work has been halted. Education Minister Madan Dilawar said the department acted immediately after taking cognisance of the matter and that a high-level probe is now underway. Questions have also been raised about the appointment of a teacher and a contractual worker instead of qualified engineers to monitor the work for the schools construction. Udaipur ADPC Nanihal Singh defended the decision, saying both officials held engineering diplomas and were deputed by higher authorities from Jaipur. He admitted, however, that while the AEN and JEN were directly responsible for site monitoring, he too shared accountability. The negligence lies with the contractor, which is why a case has been registered against him, Singh said. The accident occurred on Friday when the balcony of the under-construction building suddenly collapsed. One girl died on the spot, while another sustained serious injuries and was later shifted to Gujarat for treatment. Both girls were not students of the school. The deceased had come to her grandmothers house and, on Friday morning, was on her way to the toilet with a friend when the balcony collapsed, burying her under the debris. Eyewitnesses say the accident was caused by improper filling of the lintel and rather premature removal of shuttering. According to information, the Central Government had sanctioned Rs 75 lakh for the construction of the school building, which was to include seven rooms and other facilities. Work began in February and was scheduled to be completed by August 5, but remained unfinished. The contractor had already sought a two-month extension. Angry villagers blamed the tragedy on poor-quality construction material and said that if the school had been operational, the consequences could have been far worse. Police and administrative officials are stationed at the site, attempting to pacify the grieving family and agitated locals. This is not the first such incident in Rajasthan. Last month, seven children were killed when the roof of a government school collapsed in Jhalawar, sparking widespread criticism of the Education Department and the state government. Education Minister Madan Dilawar had accepted responsibility but deferred any further decision to Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma. Days later, another mishap occurred in Jaisalmer, where the gate of a government school collapsed, killing one child and injuring two others, including a teacher. On Independence Day, besides the Udaipur tragedy, a private school in Bundi also saw a major scare when its false ceiling collapsed, leaving five people injured. In light of these repeated incidents, the Congress has stepped up its attack on the state government. Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully said these accidents expose the governments negligence and the dilapidated condition of school infrastructure. Calling it shameful that such a sensitive issue as the safety of children is being ignored, he demanded accountability over the incidents in Udaipur and Bundi. State Congress President and former Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasra was even more scathing, accusing the BJP government of being a killer of children. He said the tragedies in Jhalawar, Jaisalmer, and now Udaipur were the result of gross negligence by the Education Department and administration. Dotasra claimed this was the third major school-related accident in a single month in which innocent children lost their lives due to negligence by government authorities.
On Saturday, the film's producer Amit Jani posted on X claiming he was getting repeated calls from an unknown number and was being threatened.

'Udaipur Files' released in 4,500 theatres, Kanhaiyalals sons attend emotional first screening
JAIPUR: The film 'Udaipur Files', based on the tragic murder of Kanhaiyalal Sahu in Udaipur that made national headlines in June 2022, was released across 4,500 theatres nationwide on Friday. The censor board cleared the film, which stars Vijay Raaz, after making 55 cuts. Kanhaiyalals sons, Yash and Tarun Sahu, attended the first screening at Udaipurs Urban Square Mall. They were visibly emotional and broke down during the throat-slitting scene that recreated their fathers brutal killing. Their mother did not attend the screening, choosing not to relive the trauma. During the show, Yash and Tarun carried a photograph of their father and left an empty seat in his memory. The films release was marked by tight security in the city, with extra police forces deployed in sensitive areas and special teams stationed at 21 check posts. Speaking to the media, Yash Teli said, After a long and difficult struggle, the film has finally reached audiences. It was challenged at multiple levels from the High Court to the Supreme Court and the Central Government. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting cleared it after confirming it did not target any community. Yash added that his family has been fighting for justice for the past three years without success. Through this film, we want to show our pain to the country. It tells the truth about the injustice done to my father. I hope people watch it and support us in our fight for justice, he said. Explaining why his mother stayed away from the premiere, Yash said, We decided not to bring her this time. She has already suffered a lot. In the past, watching such portrayals caused her immense distress. He also criticized what he called terrorist-minded people and organizations that, in his view, provide legal aid to terrorists and demanded that such groups be banned. The film is directed by Bharat S. Srinet and Jayant Sinha, produced by Amit Jani, and features Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiyalal. Rajneesh Duggal and Preeti Jhangiani play key roles. Udaipur murder case sparks fresh political criticism over justice delay On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal Teli, a tailor by profession, was beheaded by two Muslim men in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The attackers filmed the act and circulated the video online. Kanhaiyalal had shared a social media post supporting BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, whose remarks had sparked the Muhammad remarks controversy. The release of 'Udaipur Files' has reignited political debate. Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot once again accused the central government of failing to provide justice to the victims family. Last month, Gehlot criticized Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Jaipur, questioning the delay in justice. Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both had links with the BJP. Yet the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight and we did not object, Gehlot wrote on social media. He pointed out that in three years, the NIA court has not delivered a verdict because it does not have a regular judge. It is a failure of the Centre and the NIA that only 6 out of 166 witnesses have testified. No special or fast-track court has been formed. The case is currently being handled as an additional charge by the CBI court, he said.

JAIPUR: In a chilling case of post-tragedy exploitation, fraudsters posing as government and legal representatives allegedly attempted to deceive and intimidate the family of a deceased victim of the recent Ahmedabad plane crash. The family, residing in Rundeda village of Vallabhnagar tehsil, was approached with a false promise of 8 to 10 crore in compensation in exchange for confidential documents and signatures. According to the police complaint filed by Deepak Menaria, son of the deceased Vardichand Menaria, the fraudsters first made contact via a mobile call on the night of 17 July. The caller, identifying himself as Bhupendra, claimed to be part of a central government verification team and requested personal documents including a copy of the deceaseds passport and flight ticket. He assured Deepak that filing a legal case against Boeing could result in a massive compensation payout. The very next evening, on 18 July, a man and a woman arrived at the complainants house in a white Ertiga car (registration number GJ 06 DX 8772). Without prior notice or formal introduction, they entered the house and began speaking directly to the victim's mother in a confusing and persuasive tone. Alarmed, she called Deepak, who rushed home to find the duo claiming to be from the Supreme Court in Delhi. They allegedly insisted that the family sign and provide thumb impressions on some documents, which they claimed were needed to initiate a lawsuit against Boeing in the United States. However, when Deepak stated that he intended to file the case independently including Boeing, Air India, the Government of India, and the Airport Authority the duo allegedly became aggressive, trying to coerce him into signing. After the two left the house, the situation worsened when Deepak received a WhatsApp message stating they would return the next day by 2 p.m. When he asked for the reason and declined to answer calls, he was bombarded with voice recordings until 11 p.m., allegedly pressuring him to comply. In one of the audios, the man claimed to be a senior Delhi-based advocate working on behalf of the Central Government to verify Boeing's released funds. He threatened that they would return and sent suspicious documents via WhatsApp. Disturbed by the continued pressure and fearing for the safety of his family, Deepak approached the Udaipur district administration on 19 July. The family sought protection and action against the impersonators. Following this, the Vallabhnagar police registered an FIR against unknown individuals under relevant sections related to fraud, impersonation, and intimidation. The case has now been taken up by local law enforcement. Investigators are examining phone numbers, messages, and audio clips shared by the complainant. The police are also tracing the vehicles registration to identify the fraudsters. Authorities have urged other bereaved families to remain cautious and report any suspicious communication, especially in the wake of sensitive incidents like the Ahmedabad plane crash.

JAIPUR: Rajasthan continues to reel under intense monsoon activity as heavy rains batter multiple regions, prompting widespread disruption and precautionary measures. Jaipur saw heavy showers since morning, causing waterlogging in several parts of the city. Notably, areas around government residences, including those of Chief Secretary Sudhansh Pant and DGP Rajeev Sharma, were flooded. The Hadoti region was badly hit, with connectivity also severely disrupted. In Kota and surrounding Hadoti region, the spell of rain persisted on Tuesday as well, filling up dams, anicuts, and ponds. Waterfalls have begun flowing from the surrounding hills, and low-lying areas are flooded. Many rural roads are submerged, causing significant traffic disruptions, and standing crops are beginning to rot in waterlogged fields. Kota city recorded 15 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, with intermittent rain continuing through the day after a wet night. In Tonk and Sawai Madhopur, several areas are submerged. Rajasthans connectivity with Madhya Pradesh has been severely affected: Parvati river overflowed in Etawah (Kota), flooding a new bridge on the Etawah-Khatoli road. As a result, State Highway-70 (KotaGwaliorSheopur) is closed to traffic. Augaad culvert on NH-552 in Bodal, about 12 km from Sawai Madhopur, was washed away, severing the Sawai MadhopurSheopur (MP) route. In Sawai Madhopur, houses are filled with water up to five feet, and railway tracks are submerged, affecting train services. Morel Dam overflows again The Morel Dam in Lalsot (Dausa), considered Asias largest kachha (earthen) dam, has overflowed with water reaching 1.5 feet above its crest. This is the second consecutive year the dam has reached capacity. The situation is being closely monitored by local authorities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange and Yellow alert for several districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next three days, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday. According to the forecast, 18 districts in Jaipur, Ajmer, and Bharatpur divisions are expected to witness heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours. Some parts of the Bikaner division may also receive moderate to heavy showers. School holidays announced in several districts In light of the continuing downpour and the expected intensity of rain, local administrations have declared school and Anganwadi closures in several districts as a precautionary measure: Jaisalmer: Over 1650 schools closed till 31st July. Delhi HC to examine if Centre has power to order cuts in 'Udaipur Files' movie
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought to know from the Centre whether it had the authority to pass the order directing six cuts in the film 'Udaipur Files - Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder' while exercising its revisional powers. You have to exercise the powers within the four corners of the statute. You can't go beyond that, a bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said. The court posed the question on being informed that the Centre, while exercising its revisional powers under the Cinematograph Act, had suggested six cuts to the producers of the movie in addition to a disclaimer. It was also informed that though the film has been recertified, it has not been issued to the producers because the matter is pending in the high court. The petitioner's counsel contended before the court that the central government had exercised its revisional powers in a manner that contravenes the statutory scheme of the Cinematograph Act. The nature of order you passed, you said, effect six cuts, etc, whether this authority is available under the statute? In the earlier round, this court has noticed the change of the provision of Section 6 of the Cinematograph Act, as it existed then and now, the bench asked Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma, who was representing the Centre and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The court was hearing a plea by Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the tailor Kanhaiya Lal murder case, objecting to the release of the film on the ground that it would prejudice his case during the trial. The (July 10) order was to decide the revision petition under Section 6. There was no order to the producer or to the board (to make cuts). See the earlier order, the court notices the changes in law. Earlier and existing provisions and the changes were noticed. It was noticed clearly what kind of orders can be passed under Section 6... It was a statutory remedy to which the petitioners were relegated. You have to exercise the powers within the four corners of the statute. You can't go beyond that, the bench said. Section 6 of the Act grants the central government revisional powers over film certification. Sharma submitted that the film has undergone a two-step filter, first by the censor board, which suggested 55 cuts, and second by the committee, which further asked for six cuts, making a total of 61 cuts. There is a body of experts and so it happens in this case that it has undergone a two-stage filter test -- first by the board which suggested 55 cuts. All those cuts were those which had purported generic overtones, he said. Senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy, representing Javed, submitted that till now six witnesses have been examined in the case and 160 witnesses remain. I was 19 years old when I was arrested. I am Accused No.8 in the trial. I was released on bail by the Rajasthan High Court because there was no connection between me and the allegations. I am a citizen of this country and am entitled to a fair trial. My right to a fair trial is jeopardised by the release of the film. This is the first proposition. The promise of Article 21 of the Constitution, right to fair trial, is an essential component of what it means to be a citizen in this country, she argued. The senior counsel said the film producer has expressly said that the film is based on the case chargesheet and even the dialogues have been lifted directly from the chargesheet. She contended that the central government has exercised its revisional powers in a manner that contravenes the statutory scheme of the Cinematograph Act. Referring to the relevant law, Guruswamy said there are three kinds of revisional powers that can be exercised by the Centre -- the government can say that the film cannot be broadcast; they can change the certification or they can suspend it. What it cannot do is what it has done here, which is to suggest cuts, remove dialogues, add disclaimers, modify disclaimers like the sensor board. It cannot do, she contended. While Guruswamy concluded her arguments, the submissions of Sharma remained inconclusive and the court would continue the proceedings on August 1. Besides Javed's plea, another petition has been filed by Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind president Maulana Arshad Madani. It could not be heard due to the non-availability of the counsel. Two petitions related to the movie came before the high court following a Supreme Court direction. The top court directed the petitioners to move the high court against the Centre's revisional order of giving nod for the film's release. The producers of the film had moved the top court after a high court bench previously stayed the film's release. The apex court on July 25 said the film-makers' appeal against the high court order staying the film's release was infructuous as they had accepted the July 21 Centre nod for the film's release, subject to six cuts in its scenes and modifications in the disclaimer. Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal was murdered in June 2022 allegedly by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous. The assailants later released a video claiming the murder was in reaction to the tailor allegedly sharing a social media post in support of former BJP member Nupur Sharma following her controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed. The case was probed by the NIA and the accused were booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, besides provisions under the IPC. The trial is pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
JAIPUR: In the wake of the tragic Jhalawar school wall collapse incident that claimed the lives of seven children, fresh incidents from Jaisalmer and Udaipur have once again highlighted the crumbling condition of government school buildings in the State. Two rooms of a government school in Kotada, Udaipur, collapsed around 8 pm on July 27. Fortunately, since the incident did not occur during school hours, another potential disaster was prevented. Upon receiving the information, residents, including Pipla Sarpanch, rushed to the spot to assess the damage. According to locals, several school buildings in the Kotada region are in a severely dilapidated condition and pose a serious threat to students and staff. Jhalawar School tragedy puts Rajasthan Education Minister in the dock: Will he Resign? In a separate incident, a portion of the plaster ceiling at the Amba Khadra Anganwadi Centre in Eklingpura village of Gram Panchayat Manvakheda collapsed late at night. No children were present at the time, averting a major mishap. However, the incident has left Anganwadi workers and local children shocked. Villagers claimed that they had repeatedly informed the Panchayat and concerned departments about the dangerous condition of the building, but no repairs had been initiated. These incidents point to serious negligence by the authorities and underline the deteriorating condition of public infrastructure in educational institutions. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the Jhalawar tragedy. Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand described the incident as nerve-shocking, heart-breaking, and society-rocking, expressing deep concern over the condition and safety of government schools in the State. The court observed that even though 6% of the state budget is allocated to education, the condition of many schools remains deplorable. Shockingly, 32% of government schools lack electricity, 9% do not have access to drinking water, and many still do not have separate toilets for boys and girls leaving girl students especially vulnerable. The court highlighted the gravity of the situation by stating: Girls are afraid to go to school due to the lack of basic facilities. If they drink water, they fear needing a toilet that doesnt exist. The High Court has issued notices to the Union Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development, as well as to the Rajasthan Chief Secretary, Education Department, Women and Child Development Department, and the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, demanding detailed reports on the current status and for immediate measures being taken. The court has asked why the following directions should not be issued. Immediate survey and identification of all dilapidated or dangerous school buildings. Preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future. Compensation and full support (including treatment and education) for affected families. Proportional development of schools according to the local population. Provision of separate, clean toilets for girls. Free sanitary napkins and installation of vending machines in schools. Regular power supply, fans, and proper lighting facilities in every school. Establishment of libraries and computer labs with internet access in all schools. Development of an online complaint redressal system. Fixing accountability and recovering costs in cases of poor construction. Initiation of departmental and criminal action against responsible officials. Formation of district-level committees for monthly inspections and monitoring. As incidents of school infrastructure failures continue to emerge, the state now faces urgent pressure from both the judiciary and the public to ensure the safety and dignity of its school-going children. Amit Shah in Jaipur for Cooperative Festival; Gehlot raises Kanhaiyalal case, demands answers
JAIPUR: Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is visiting Dadiya village in Jaipur on Thursday to attend the Co-operation and Employment Festival. During the event, major announcements related to the cooperative sector are expected, and appointment letters will be distributed among the youth. However, the visit has drawn sharp political reactions. Former Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot criticised the Union Minister, demanding answers over the lack of progress in the Kanhaiyalal murder case. Today Union Home Minister Amit Shah is coming to Jaipur. Before the assembly elections, you mentioned the Kanhaiyalal case in every rally in Rajasthan and asked for votes in his name, Gehlot posted on X. He accused the BJP of misleading the public on compensation to the victims family. Rajasthan Police arrested the accused within four hours. Both were associated with the BJP. Despite this, the NIA, under your ministry, took over the case overnight. We didnt object. But the BJP continued to spread lies about compensation, which was one of the major reasons behind our governments fall, he wrote. Gehlot expressed dismay over the slow pace of justice. Three years have passed, but the NIA court has not delivered any sentence. There isnt even a regular judge in the NIA court here, and witness statements havent been recorded yet, he said. He urged Shah to respond to the people of Rajasthan: How long will Kanhaiyalals family wait for justice? Will the BJP continue to politicise the issue, or is it serious about delivering justice? On June 28, 2022, Kanhaiyalal, a tailor from Udaipur, was brutally murdered by two men after he posted content on social media in support of BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma. The attackers recorded the killing and shared the video online, sparking nationwide outrage. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Four die in Himachal, five in Rajasthan's Kota as rain plays havoc
NEW DELHI: Four people died in Himachal Pradesh as rain continues to wreak havoc in the state, while five were swept away in Rajasthan's Kota at a barrage after a heavy downpour caused the authorities to release water from a reservoir. In Himachal, more than 200 roads are out of bounds for vehicular traffic, a majority of them in Mandi, while a flash flood warning has been issued for 12 districts in Jharkhand. An individual each drowned in Kullu and Kangra districts, one died after being bitten by a snake in Bilaspur, while one was killed after falling from a height, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said. Since the onset of monsoon on June 20, 61 people have died in the state in rain-related incidents. In Rajasthan, Khatauli in Kota district recorded 198 mm of rain over 24 hours, the highest in the state. Five youths were swept away in the Chambal River Monday afternoon after the water level suddenly rose following the release of water from 12 gates of the Kota Barrage. The identity of the five missing youths is yet to be confirmed, as the rescued individual is not in a condition to provide detailed information at this stage, Digod Police Station SHO Purshottam Mehta said. Due to continuous rainfall in the region, the authorities opened all 12 gates of the Kota Barrage at 11.30 am on Monday, releasing approximately 2.2692 lakh cusecs of water downstream, said Nisha Sharma, Junior Engineer at Kota Barrage. A met department official said that a circulation system over Madhya Pradesh has intensified into a low-pressure area. Due to the system, parts of Kota, Ajmer, Jodhpur, and Udaipur divisions have seen heavy rain since yesterday. Delhi got a decent drizzle towards the evening, lifting the heavy humid pall it had sweltered under during the day. According to IMD data, Lodhi Road recorded the highest cumulative rainfall at 18.5 mm till 8.30 am on Monday. Pragati Maidan received 24.3 mm of rain, Ayanagar, 15.5 mm, Safdarjung, 15.8 mm, and Palam, 8.5 mm. In Himachal Pradesh, 208 roads, including 157 in the disaster-hit Mandi district, are closed for vehicular traffic, while 745 water supply schemes and 139 power distribution transformers were affected. The local Met office has issued an Orange alert of heavy to very heavy rain in Kangra, Mandi and Sirmaur on Monday, and Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur on Tuesday. It issued a Yellow alert, meaning heavy rain, for at least three of the 12 districts till Friday. In Odisha, the weather department forecasted heavy rainfall in 19 of the 30 districts, as a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a well-marked system. The India Meteorological Department cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea for the next 24 hours in the north Bay of Bengal, as squally winds, blowing at 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, were likely to prevail along and off north Odisha. A red warning was issued for extremely heavy rain, above 20 centimetres, in Mayurbhanj, Keonhar and Sundargarh. Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore were predicted to receive 12 cm to 20 cm of rain. The remaining districts were forecasted to witness 7-11 cm of precipitation. Kolkata is likely to experience spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers over the next 24 hours. Light to moderate rain is likely across South Bengal districts, as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal is set to intensify into a low-pressure area within the next 24 hours, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre here. In Jharkhand, a flash flood warning was issued for Bokaro, East Singhbhum, Garhwa, Gumla, Khunti, Latehar, Lohardaga, Palamu, Ranchi, Saraikela, Simdega, and West Singhbhum districts till 11.30 am on Tuesday. A Red alert was sounded for heavy to extremely heavy rain in Saraikela-Kharswan, East Singhbhum, and West Singhbhum districts, and an Orange alert for Gumla, Khunti, and Simdega districts till 8.30 am on Tuesday. The weather office has issued a Yellow alert for heavy rain in Ranchi, Lohardaga, Ramgarh, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Jamtara, Hazaribag, Giridih, Koderma, and Deoghar till 8.30 am tomorrow. Ranchi Meteorological Centre Deputy Director Abhishek Anand said the state is likely to experience widespread rainfall till July 17 under the influence of a depression and monsoon trough.
