Lawsuit says Musk's Twitter layoffs unfairly targeted women

Two women who lost their jobs at Twitter after Elon Musk took over allege that the company unfairly targeted women in recent layoffs, which impacted around half of the firm's employees. Carolina Bernal Strifling and Willow Wren Turkal have filed a case in a federal court in San Francisco challenging the mass layoffs, alleging that they discriminated against female employees. The company announced mass layoffs days after Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion. The firm told staff that around half of them may lose their jobs, but they would still get three months of severance pay. The proposed class action alleges that Twitter fired 57% of its female employees compared to only 47% of its male employees after Musk took over. Women who worked in engineering jobs had an even higher likelihood of being terminated, with 63% of women being dismissed compared to just 48% of males. Even before the layoffs, Twitter apparently hired more men overall - not an unusual situation for the tech sector. 'Elon Musk has made a number of publicly discriminatory remarks about women, further confirming that the mass termination's greater impact on female employees resulted from discrimination,' according to the complaint [ pdf ]. Twitter is charged with breaking federal and California rules that prohibit sex discrimination at work. Shannon Liss-Riordan, a lawyer representing the plaintiffs, said women had targets on their backs once Musk bought the firm, regardless of their contribution and abilities. Wren Turkal said at a press conference that while she had seen acquisitions at other firms, she had ever seen anything like this. I have a family, I have a kid to support, she said . All that we're looking for is fairness. I'm also worried about my friends who are financially in a difficult position or are in a difficult position for visa reasons. Since the widespread layoffs, a number of former workers have filed lawsuits against Twitter. One sacked employee filed a lawsuit last month alleging that Musk's requirements that employees be incredibly hardcore and work long hours caused disabled staff to resign. Other claims alleged that employees who were laid off did not get the promised severance compensation or the legally required prior notice. At least three employees have individually filed complaints against the company with the US National Labor Relations Board, saying they suffered reprisals for demanding improved working conditions. Twitter has faced several challenges since Musk's acquisition. This week, it came to light that makeshift bedrooms had been set up in conference rooms at the company's headquarters in San Francisco, the apparent manifestation of Musk's extremely hardcore work philosophy . The Department of Building Inspection in San Francisco is now investigating.

Apple supplier Foxconn invests USD 500 mn in India affiliate

NEW DELHI: Apple supplier Foxconn is investing another USD 500 million in India, amid supply chain disruptions at its major China iPhone plant, the media reported on Thursday. The first to disclose that Foxconn's Singapore affiliate had invested USD 500 million in Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Pvt Ltd was TechCrunch, which cited a corporate stock exchange filing in Taiwan. Due to instability in China over its zero-Covid policy, which has badly impacted its supply chain and caused a major scarcity of new iPhone 14 Pro models, Apple is moving forward with its plans to manufacture iPhones and iPads in India and Vietnam. According to earlier sources, Apple no longer feels comfortable having so much of its business tied up in one area as a result of the China unrest that last month affected its major supplier Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory and led to violent demonstrations. According to renowned analyst Ming-chi Kuo, Apple plans to ship 4045% of iPhones from India as opposed to a single-digit percentage at the moment. Every fourth iPhone will be made in India by 2025, as per J.P. Morgan. Early this year, Apple began manufacturing the new iPhone 14 in India, a first for the tech giant as it shortens the production cycle of new iPhones in the nation to reduce dependence on China. Industry sources predict that Apple's Make in India iPhones will likely represent close to 85% of the company's total iPhone production for the nation this year, helped by the country's supportive local manufacturing rules and ease of doing business. With the release of the iPhone 14 series, Apple's iPhone production in India is anticipated to increase from 7 million units in 2021 to a new high of 1213 million units in 2022. Two women sue Elon Musk's Twitter alleging discriminatory layoffs

Two women who lost their jobs at Twitter when billionaire Elon Musk took over are suing the company in federal court, claiming that last month's abrupt mass layoffs disproportionately affected female employees. The discrimination lawsuit is the latest in a series of legal challenges over Musk's decimation of Twitter's workforce through mass layoffs and firings. Days after the world's richest man bought the social media platform for $44 billion, the company told about half of employees on Nov. 4 that they no longer had a job but would get three months severance. The lawsuit filed in a San Francisco federal court this week alleges that 57% of female employees were laid off, compared to less than half of men, despite Twitter employing more men overall before the layoffs. South Korea: Expanding its back-to-work directives to include striking truck drivers

Seoul: In response to a nationwide walkout by thousands of freight truck drivers over the issue of freight rates, the South Korean government on Thursday extended its order to return to work, claiming a prolonged strike would leave deep scars on the country's economy. Vital export industries such as automobiles and shipbuilding could be hurt if the strike continues, according to Finance Minister Choo Kyung-ho, who told a news conference that start work orders on steel and fuel truckers were inevitable. So far, strikes have mainly affected domestic industries such as construction. Also read: Elon Musk briefly loses world's richest man's title to Bernard Arnault The orders, which were earlier placed on November 29 for around 2,500 cement truckers, were later placed on around 6,000 steel drivers and 4,500 fuel and chemical drivers. Police are also getting tough on unionists who harass or endanger co-workers who decide to go to work. The impact of the strike had begun to fade as it entered its third week, with container traffic at the country's major ports returning to pre-strike levels and cement deliveries to construction sites resuming. The conservative administration of President Yoon Suk Yeol has taken aggressive action to reduce delays in industrial shipments, which include about 200 military vehicles, including fuel trucks and containers. The minimum freight rate system, which is due to expire at the end of 2022, was the focus of a November 24 walkout by truckers represented by the Cargo Truckers' Solidarity Union. They claim that this is necessary for security and financial stability in the face of rising fuel prices. Also read: Speedier drug approvals hit slowdown as FDA faces scrutiny Strikers are calling for minimum fares to be raised for other cargo, such as oil and chemical tankers, steel and automobile carriers, and package delivery trucks, even though they currently only apply to shipping containers and cement. Yoon's administration offered to extend the current program for an additional three years, but has so far rejected requests to broaden the application of the minimum rates. In accordance with a law amended in 2004, which states that failure to comply without a reasonable reason could lead to up to three years in prison or a maximum fine of 30 million won ($22,800), the order was issued by South Korean The first example being used by the government. Shares rose in Hong Kong as investors considered the potential effects of the easing of several pandemic restrictions on the Chinese mainland. In a dramatic change from a strategy that confined millions of people to their homes, rules to isolate people with COVID-19 were loosened on Wednesday, prompting protests and President Xi Jinping to step down. Virus testing requirements were also removed for some public places. However, experts cautioned that zero-Covid restrictions may not be completely lifted until at least mid-2023 because of the need to immunize millions of elderly people and improve the healthcare system. There are three special reasons to be cautious, if not restrained, in cheering China. First, there's the obvious fact that changing the underlying zero-COVID policies will take time and could be a bumpy process rather than a straight line to immediate gratification, according to a commentary by Mizuho Bank. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.2% to 3,193.14, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 2.4% to 19,267.52. Ahead of this week's updates on inflation and consumer sentiment, as well as the Federal Reserve's meeting next week, investors are dealing with a relative lack of news. The main concerns for Wall Street are inflation, aggressive Fed interest rate hikes and recession fears. US crude oil prices fell 3% to their lowest level of $72.01 per gallon. Early Thursday, it was trading electronically on the New York Mercantile Exchange up 67 cents at $72.68 a barrel. Brent crude rose 64 cents to $77.81 a barrel. Investors are eyeing data that could provide more insight into the trajectory of inflation going forward and how the Fed will continue to combat higher prices. On Thursday, the United States will publish weekly unemployment claims information. Controlling inflation has been more challenging for the Fed because the job market has been a strong component of an otherwise slowing economy. A report on wholesale prices that the government will release on Friday will give more details on how inflation is affecting businesses. A consumer sentiment survey from December will be made public by the University of Michigan on Friday. Economists expect data on wholesale and consumer prices to show a declining trend in inflation. At its meeting next week, the central bank is expected to hike interest rates by half a percentage point. Since March, it has raised its benchmark rate six times, bringing it to a range of 3.75% to 4%, the highest in fifteen years. By mid-2023, Wall Street expects the benchmark rate to reach a peak range of 5% to 5.25%. Lebanon's banks are suffering as a result of the financial crisis

Beirut: Lebanon's once-booming banking industry has been badly hit by the nation's historic economic collapse. It has racked up tens of billions of dollars in losses, and many of the tiny nation's lenders now face the prospect of closure or merger. Still, bankers have resisted efforts to make their shareholders pay for those losses and instead sought to pin the blame on the government or even their own depositors. The reforms have also been opposed by the country's political elite, who blame decades of fraud and wastefulness that led to the financial crisis. The International Monetary Fund has given top priority to restructuring the banking industry to help Lebanon emerge from its severe financial crisis. Most of the country's 46 banks a huge number for a country of 5 million people are likely to be forced to close or merge as a result of the proposed IMF reforms. Also Read: Blinken issues travel warnings for Sudanese who jeopardise deal The banking industry was the economic jewel of Lebanon in the years following the end of the 15-year civil war in 1990; It offered high interest rates which attracted investments and deposits from all over the world. Since the country's lenders made risky investments by buying Lebanese treasury bills despite widespread corruption and excessive spending by the country's political class, most of those depositors have now lost access to their savings. These actions contributed to the onset of the economic crisis in October 2019. Banks in Lebanon no longer make loans or accept new deposits; Instead, they lend customers a small portion of their savings in US dollars at a rate that is much lower than the market rate. According to financial advisor Michel Kozah, who contributes a financial column to a Lebanese newspaper, they have turned into zombie banks. According to local reports, prominent political and financial figures are believed to have siphoned billions of dollars out of the country despite informal capital controls on banks. Clashes between angry depositors and bank employees, who have also been hit by the financial crisis, have resulted in angry depositors storming bank branches across Lebanon in recent months to obtain their frozen savings by force. One in five bank branches have closed since the start of the crisis, and the number of bank employees has dropped by a third to less than 16,500. Even though bank branches are limited by the current economic climate, Jeanine Hayek, who lost her job as a branch manager at one of the country's largest banks two years ago, said she understands the pain of depositors. Also Read: Elon Musk briefly loses world's richest man's title to Bernard Arnault In the mountain town of Bekfaya, where he opened a bakery after being fired from his job, he said, There are some people who cannot afford to eat because their money is stuck in the bank, adding that from now on Getting away is relieved by confrontation. The future of banks is uncertain. In April, the Lebanese government and the IMF reached a provisional agreement that called for an externally assisted bank-by-bank assessment for the 14 largest banks. But neither the government nor the lenders have taken any action till date. The banking industry has mounted a stout defense against the proposed legislation that would put the burden of system losses on shareholders rather than regular depositors. According to a draft of the government's economic recovery plan published in September, losses in the financial sector, mainly at the central bank, stood at around $72 billion. The plan states that due to the size of the deficit, neither the central bank nor the banks can return most of their deposits to their holders. According to a recent World Bank report, the deficit for 2021 is more than three times GDP, which makes bailouts impractical due to the lack of available public funds. According to the report, a bail-in that transfers the burden of payment from small depositors to large creditors and shareholders for bank restructuring is the best course of action. Banks have opposed the bail-in solution, advocating the sale or investment of state assets to cover short-term losses. One of Lebanon's largest lenders, Byblos Bank, led by chief economist Naseeb Ghobril, accused the government of a complete abdication of responsibility. He claimed that while the banking industry was luring foreign currency from around the world, the government did nothing to implement structural reforms and squandered the money. He claimed that the wage increase decision made in 2017originally estimated to cost $800 millionactually cost three times that amount. According to him, this led to a financial crisis and led to the doubling of the fiscal deficit in just one year. The government's choice to stop making payments on its foreign debt in March 2020, he claimed, had an adverse effect on the banks as well. According to financial columnist Kozah, there is still time to find a way to cover the losses by having an auditing company look into accounts, returning the funds that powerful people illegally transferred abroad after the crisis started, and attempting to distinguish between good and bad banks. Little has been accomplished in the meantime in the discussions with the IMF regarding the proposed reforms. Also Read: Conflict in Ukraine interrupts the UN summit on biodiversity Another IMF demand was met in October when Lebanon's parliament approved changes to a law governing banking secrecy. However, advocacy groups claim the changes are insufficient. Even though the IMF has been pushing for them to be combined into one rate, the central bank continues to use multiple exchange rates. Due to a power outage, other proposed measures are currently on hold. The IMF negotiations are being led by Deputy Prime Minister Saadeh Shami, who recently stated that all deposits under $100,000 will be returned to depositors, while deposits over $100,000 will be compensated over time through a sovereign fund. Shami admitted that there isn't a fair plan for all depositors. Amin Salam, the interim minister of the economy, claimed that whenever the government discusses how losses and liabilities are shared, the banks push back. Government officials are aware that they need to save the banking sector because... without a banking sector, we will not be able to get the economy standing again.

Blinken issues travel warnings for Sudanese who jeopardise deal

United States: Sudan's leaders were warned Wednesday by Foreign Minister Antony Blinken that anyone who poses a threat to Sudan's shaky democratic transition will face a travel ban from the United States. The announcement comes two days after the main pro-democracy organization, the Force for the Declaration of Independence and Change, and Sudan's two ruling generals, Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, signed a framework agreement. As part of the agreement a new transitional government led by civilians would be established, and the country's military would relinquish control. The agreement was also signed by several other political parties and organisations. Also Read: Court sentenced Ex president of Theranos inc. nearly 13 years in prison for fraud Blinken in a statement released Wednesday praised Monday's agreement, which was mediated by the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. He continued by saying that anyone responsible for, or believed to have been involved in, undermining democratic change in Sudan would face a travel ban. Due to the refusal of key political figures to sign the accord, Sudan's framework deal provides only the most basic plan for how the country will resume its uncertain transition to democracy. The agreement also sidelined more complex issues such as military reform and the implementation of transitional justice. Volker Perthes, the United Nations Special Representative for Sudan, described the political framework agreement as a significant breakthrough. Also Read: Relationships of Johnny Depp However, he issued a warning that significant contentious issues still need to be addressed in a final agreement in a video briefing to the UN Security Council from Khartoum. These include implementing a peace agreement that Sudan's transitional government and several armed groups signed in Juba in 2020, reforming the security sector and combining competing forces, and ensuring transitional justice. Perthes said the UN would also like to discuss the new government's economic and development priorities in the upcoming round of talks. He issued a stern warning, saying encouraging progress on the political track this week could be derailed by challenges and obstacles still ahead. Perthes warned that as a final settlement draws closer, those who do not believe it will advance their interests may intensify their efforts to destroy it. The accord excludes several former rebel leaders who have set up their own political bloc. Sudan's vast grassroots pro-democracy resistance committees, which have refused to hold talks with the country's military leaders, are also absent. Given the vulnerability of democratic changes, the United States will hold political or military actors accountable for their actions. Blinken said. Further talks are expected to start soon to reach a more inclusive agreement. Numerous arrests result from a suspected German coup attempt.

Berlin: Numerous people were detained by German police on Wednesday, including a self-styled prince, a retired paratrooper, and a former judge. The suspects were allegedly talking about violently overthrowing the government, though it is not clear how specific their plans were. Investigators may have found actual plotting, inebriated fantasising, or both, according to a German official and lawmaker. However, Germany takes any threat from the right seriously, and throughout much of the country, dawn raids were conducted by thousands of police officers. Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit stated, We're talking about a group that, according to what we know so far, planned to violently abolish our democratic state of law and an armed attack on the German parliament building. Also Read: Taliban perform first public execution since taking over Afghanistan The German government's Green party lawmaker Sara Nanni suggested the group might not have been competent. Nanni wrote on the social media platform Mastodon, More details keep coming to light that raise doubts about whether these people were even clever enough to plan and carry out such a coup. The truth is that even making an attempt is risky, regardless of how naive their concepts or hopeless their plans may be. The group is said to have subscribed to a conglomerate of conspiracy theories consisting of narratives from the so-called Reich Citizens as well as QAnon ideology, according to federal prosecutors. The Reich Citizens movement has called for overthrowing the government, and QAnon is a global conspiracy theory with American origins. Both groups disagree with the post-World War II constitution of Germany. Germany's domestic intelligence agency has been monitoring the situation with the Reich Citizens since 2016. Authorities calculate that there are about 21,000 members of the loosely organised movement. According to the prosecution, the suspects also think that a deep state controls Germany. . Also Read: Elon Musk briefly loses world's richest man's title to Bernard Arnault Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss, a 71-year-old member of the House of Reuss, was one of the alleged ringleaders detained on Wednesday. Germany abolished all formal roles for royalty more than a century ago, but Heinrich XIII Prince Reuss continues to use the title. Reuss, who the group intended to install as Germany's new leader, allegedly made contact with Russian officials with the intention of imposing a new order on the nation after the German government was overthrown, according to federal prosecutors. There is no evidence that the Russians gave a favourable response. Birgit Malsack-Winkemann, a judge and former lawmaker for the far-right Alternative for Germany party, was also detained by police. Security agencies are paying closer attention to Alternative for Germany, also known by the abbreviation AfD, as a result of its connections to extremists. Tino Chrupalla and Alice Weidel, the co-leaders of the AfD, claimed they were only made aware of the purported coup plans through the media and denounced them. They issued a statement that read, We have full confidence in the authorities involved and demand a prompt and thorough investigation. According to Peter Frank, the chief federal prosecutor, 3,000 officers took part in the raids that were conducted at 150 locations across 11 of Germany's 16 states. 22 German citizens were detained by police on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organisation, according to the prosecution. According to them, three additional people, among them a Russian national, were detained on suspicion of aiding the group. 27 more people were the subject of an investigation. One of those detained was a soldier who was stationed in the southwest German town of Calw as support personnel for the KSK special forces unit. Over what officials described as some soldiers' far-right beliefs, the unit has come under fire. Prosecutors claimed that in addition to detentions in Germany, one person was held in the Austrian town of Kitzbuehel and another in Italy. The second suspect, a 64-year-old German national who formerly served as an officer in the German army special forces, is charged with being a member of a criminal organisation that sought to subvert the German democratic order by any means, including criminal, according to police, who also announced that extradition proceedings were in progress. German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann stated that of course, there are many people who grandstand and tell confused tales stories after drinking alcohol. But in this instance, the investigating judge at the Federal Supreme Court ordered the investigative measures to be taken because there were such strong suspicions that the group intended to take violent action. Prosecutors claim that some of the group's members had made concrete preparations to storm the federal parliament of Germany with a small armed group. The raids on Wednesday proved, in the words of interior minister Nancy Faeser, that we know how to defend ourselves with full force against the enemies of democracy. According to Faeser, the investigation offers an insight into the depths of the terrorist threat within the milieu of the Reich Citizens. Only a thorough investigation will show just how far along the coup plans were. Also Read: Putin acknowledges that Russia's conflict in Ukraine may last for a while Far-right extremists are the biggest threat to Germany's domestic security, officials have repeatedly warned. Twitter is reportedly raising Blue subscription's pricing on iOS to $11

When Twitter's Blue subscription comes back, it may cost a lot more than before if you purchase it straight from the app. According to The Information , the company informed some employees that it's going to charge users $11 for Blue subscription if they pay through its iOS application. But if they pay through the web, it will only cost them $7 a month for the service, which includes getting the website's blue verification badge. As the publication notes, the change in pricing likely takes Apple's 30 percent commission for payments made through its system into account. In late November, Twitter owner Elon Musk spoke out against Apple's 30 percent cut on in-app purchases. He also said that the tech giant threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store and won't tell his company why. A few days later, though, Musk met with Apple chief Tim Cook and resolved what the former called a misunderstanding. Musk said the two had a good conversation and that Apple never truly considered dropping Twitter from the App Store. Apple announced in late 2021 that it was going to allow developers of eader apps to link to external payment systems following a barrage of criticisms against its practice of taking a 30 percent commission. It's unclear if the two executives talked about Twitter's plan to offer Blue subscription outside of the App Store and how the social network would implement its idea. Twitter originally launched Blue verification for iOS devices in early November for $8 a month, but the company decided to pause the service after it led to an influx of impersonators and fake accounts. When the subscription service does come back, it will come with different colored checkmarks : gold for companies, grey for government and blue for individuals, whether or not they're a public figure.

Twitter to Charge $11 Per Month for Twitter Blue on iPhone, $7 on Website

Twitter plans to charge $11 per month for a Twitter Blue subscription on the iPhone in order to account for the 30 percent cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases, reports The Information . On the web, Twitter Blue will be priced at $7 per month. Prior to when Twitter Blue was paused, Twitter was charging $7.99 for a subscription, but the pricing will change before it relaunches. According to The Information , some employees have been briefed on the new pricing, but Twitter CEO Elon Musk is known for making snap decisions, so it is still not yet clear if plans could change. The higher price point on the iPhone will allow Twitter to provide Apple with its 30 percent cut of in-app purchase proceeds without significantly cutting in to Twitter's bottom line. The pricing difference will likely encourage most customers to subscribe on the web, allowing Twitter to avoid in-app purchase fees. Other companies like Spotify have in the past charged higher prices on the iPhone than on the web, but this often leads to confusion for consumers who do not understand why the prices are different on a device to device basis. Apple does not have an issue with companies charging more for subscriptions in apps than on the web. The Twitter Blue pricing changes come after a short dispute between Twitter and Apple. Musk last week criticized Apple's App Store fees and claimed that Apple had hreatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but he later walked that statement back following a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook . Musk and Cook met at Apple Park , and afterward, Musk said they had a good conversation and that there had been a misunderstanding over Twitter being potentially removed from the App Store. Twitter is planning to relaunch Twitter Blue on Friday. Twitter Blue subscriptions were paused after Musk included a verification checkmark with Twitter Blue, allowing companies, celebrities, and other high-profile individuals to be impersonated by anyone with $8 to spend. Twitter Blue has not been available since November 11. With the relaunch, Twitter Blue is expected to include different badge colors for corporations, government accounts, and individuals, as well as restrictions on changing usernames and limits on signups for newer accounts. Democratic lawmakers want Elon Musk to explain China's role in 'platform manipulation' during protests

Three Democratic lawmakers in the House are demanding answers from Elon Musk about a recent platform manipulation campaign related to recent protests in China. In a letter to the Twitter CEO, Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi, Adam Schiff and Jackie Speier write that they have deep concern about the recent spam campaign that drowned out tweets about the protests. To ensure that the United States is prepared to counter, thwart, and deter foreign influence threats online, it is critical that we understand the extent of the PRCs potential manipulation of Twitter and identify how recent changes at Twitter are affecting the threat of CCP foreign influence operations on social media, they write. The lawmakers also address recent changes at Twitter under Musks leadership, with questions about what Twitters emphasis on free speech means for information access on the platform; as well as whether the company has the capacity to identify platform manipulation campaigns. Since Musk took over Twitter, questions have swirled about how he will handle the platforms dealings with Chinese officials, such as requests to remove state affiliated labels from their accounts. Tesla, the other company Musk runs, is highly dependent on China for manufacturing. So far, Musk hasnt publicly acknowledged the letter, which provides a December 31st deadline for a response. Twitter no longer has a communications team. However, Musk has shown little regard for other letters from lawmakers. He recently addressed a letter from Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey about Twitters failure to stop impersonation attempts with a dismissive tweet.

Company reportedly has not applied for any permits to use portions of the building for residential purposes Twitter is under investigation by city officials in San Francisco following a complaint that the company allegedly converted rooms in its headquarters to sleeping quarters, an inquiry that has drawn scorn from Elon Musk. Neuralink is reportedly under federal investigation over animal testing

The US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Inspector General is reportedly investigating Neuralink over potential animal welfare violations related to research testing. According to Reuters , internal documents show that staff members have been raising concerns that the company has been rushing animal testing and causing needless suffering and death. The news organization said the company has killed 1,500 animals, including more than 280 sheep, pigs and monkeys, since 2018. Those numbers don't automatically mean Neuralink is violating the law, and the company has passed all USDA inspections of its facilities. Former and current employees told Reuters , however, that pressure from Neuralink founder Elon Musk to accelerate development has led to faulty experiments and, hence, death rates higher than they need to be. Musk has reportedly been telling employees since the company was launched in 2016 to imagine that they had a bomb strapped to their heads in an effort to make them move faster. He also reportedly told staff that he would trigger a market failure unless they made progress, which some employees interpreted as a warning that he would shut down the company. Earlier this year, Musk also sent staff members an email with an article about Swiss researchers who created an implant that helped a paralyzed person walk again, Reuters said. In general, we are simply not moving fast enough. It is driving me nuts! he reportedly wrote in a follow-up email. Upon reviewing internal testing documentation, Reuters said it found four experiments involving 86 pigs and two monkeys with results that were rendered questionable by human errors. Neuralink had to repeat those experiments, leading to more deaths. A message written by an angry employee talked about how rushed animal surgeries had led to under-prepared and overstressed employees who ended up making mistakes. A couple of examples Reuters found in the documents detailed how Neuralink staff implanted the company's brain-machine interface device on the wrong vertebra of two different pigs something that could've been easily prevented by counting the animals' vertebrae forcing the team to kill them to end their suffering. Earlier this year, the animal rights group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine accused the company botching surgeries that killed monkeys. Neuralink admitted that it had killed six monkeys in its joint study with the University of California, Davis due to issues caused by their experiments. However, they defended their research and said that it didn't break any laws. Neuralink recently held an event announcing that it could start human trials within the next six months. During the program, company founder Elon Musk directly responded to the Phyisicians Committee accusations: Before we would even think of putting a device in an animal, we do everything possible we with rigorous benchtop testing, We're not cavalier about putting these devices into animals. We're extremely careful and we always want the device, whenever we do the implant whether into a sheep, pig or monkey to be confirmatory, not exploratory, he said. Reuters , however, said it found Neuralink records with numerous references to exploratory surgeries. Autumn Sorrells, Neuralink's Animal Care Program Director, also reportedly ordered employees in October to remove exploration from their study titles and to stop using the term going forward.

Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, ether, solana rise today, check here

The world's largest and most well-known cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, saw a rise in price today, climbing more than 1 percent to USD 17,207. As per data from CoinGecko, the market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies worldwide today stayed below the USD 1 trillion threshold, albeit increasing over the previous day to USD 902 billion. Bitcoin traded hands during the weekend between the USD 16,900 and USD 17,300 levels. It implies a tense struggle for dominance between the bulls and bears. Currently, BTC's support is at USD 16,000, where bears might start trading. To stop the negative trend, buyers will encounter immediate resistance at USD 17,622. Ethereum, on the other hand, has gained more than 10 percent over the weekend and is currently trading close to the USD 1,300 mark. The bear's weakness would be confirmed if the price can break above the current level, said Edul Patel, CEO and Co-Founder of Mudrex, a worldwide cryptocurrency investment platform. On the other hand, Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency and coin associated with the Ethereum network, increased by over 2 percent to USD 1,292. Shiba Inu was up more than a percent at USD 0.000009, while Dogecoin was trading more than 2 percent higher at USD 0.10. Other cryptocurrency prices have performed better today than Tron, with prices for Binance USD, Avalanche, Tether, Terra, Solana, Polygon, ApeCoin, Litecoin, Stellar, XRP, Cardano, Uniswap, Polkadot, and Chainlink trading higher over the last 24 hours. Late last year, the cryptocurrency market reached a record-high valuation of around USD 3 trillion, but more than USD 2 trillion of that value was lost due to market instability brought on by rising interest rates and a spate of industry meltdowns. The largest token, Bitcoin, is down 75 percent from its previous high of USD 69,000. After a week in which a potential merger with rival cryptocurrency exchange Binance fell through, Bankman-Fried was accused of diverting customer deposits to FTX's associated trading firm Alameda Research, and the exchange saw withdrawals of about USD 6 billion in just 72 hours, FTX declared bankruptcy in November. Elon Musk Says Apple Has 'Fully Resumed' Advertising on Twitter

Apple has fully resumed advertising on the Twitter social network, Twitter CEO Elon Musk said today during a two-hour Twitter Spaces chat highlighted by Bloomberg . Musk also confirmed that Apple is Twitter's largest advertiser. Just five days ago, Musk accused Apple of hating free speech, making moderation demands, and ceasing ad spending, causing a slew of press coverage about a potential battle brewing between Apple and Twitter. Musk publicly claimed that Apple had mostly stopped offering ads on Twitter and that it had also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store . Then, two days after making those statements, Musk met with Apple CEO Tim Cook , and ended up reversing course. After the meeting, Musk said that there had actually been a misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store, and Cook was clear that Apple never considered doing so. Musk said that Cook had shown him around Apple Park and that the two had a good conversation, which apparently led to Apple resuming its Twitter ads. Apple had not confirmed that it had stopped ad spending on Twitter, nor has it said anything about Musk's comments today. Following the Twitter Space discussion, Musk tweeted to hank advertisers for returning to Twitter. Apple is consistently one of Twitter's top advertisers, and the ad spending reportedly exceeds $100 million annually . Apples free speech problem has nothing to do with Twitter or Elon Musk

Welcome to our weekend Apple Breakfast column, which includes all of the Apple news you missed this week in a handy bite-sized roundup. We call it Apple Breakfast because we think it goes great with a morning cup of coffee or tea, but its cool if you want to give it a read during lunch or dinner hours too. The price of free speech Ive been doing my bestand not always succeeding to avoid writing about Elon Musk and Twitter 2.0. Part of the problem is that the Chief Twit so transparently wants to be the center of the conversation that even criticism of his behavior ends up playing into his hands. The best way of dealing with an attention-seeking child, in my experience, is to ignore them. Its difficult, however, for a website to ignore a man who publicly declares war on the company you write about. This week Musk has taken umbrage with Apple for censoring apps , taking a secret 30 percent cut of app revenue, and threatening to remove Twitter from the App Store (he later admitted that one was wrong). Most bizarrely, he claimed the company had reduced its ad spend on Twitter and wondered if it, therefore, hate(s) free speech in America. Theres a fair bit of nonsense here. You cant argue that Apple hates free speech because it declined to spend a sufficiently astronomical sum of money placing adverts next to white supremacists. That has nothing to do with free speechits a business decision. (Incidentally, it might not have even been true, according to ad analytics .) Furthermore, and despite apparent assurances that this wont happen, it wouldnt be unprecedented for Apple to remove Twitter from the App Store. Parler got booted for failing to offer rigorous content moderation and was only allowed back after it promised to do better. Fortnite was booted for trying to bypass App Store revenue cuts, and Musk reportedly wants to do the same thing for Twitter Blue subscriptions. In any case, Apple is allowed to kick people off its platform, just as Musk is free to peevishly cancel a critical bloggers Tesla order. I sincerely doubt he believes that businesses should be obliged to work with people they dont like. Amongst the wrongness, however, theres some fair criticism. The revenue cut, for example, certainly isnt a secret, but it may be excessive and is arguably enforced by monopolistic behavior. Apples militantly wholesome approach to app censorship is weird and frustrating. (The company arbitrarily holds apps to a different moral standard than other forms of media. If you want to criticize a religion, the App Store guidelines famously stated, write a book.) And it has plenty of other blind spots when it comes to free speech. Perhaps the most troubling example of this could be observed last month. Protesters in China had been communicating using AirDrop, but Apple obligingly added a restriction (in that country only) on sharing files with strangers, a decision believed to have been made in response to pressure from the state. Needless to say, Apple didnt highlight this change in the iOS 16.1.1 release notes, nor did it comment on the matter publicly. But this isnt the first time Apple has helped the Chinese state to restrict free speech. The company has removed numerous apps from the App Store in China, including VPNs , RSS readers , the New York Times , podcast players , and apps related to the Dalai Lama. If theres one thing Apple does without a fight, its bending over backward to limit the speech of citizens to accommodate the wishes of a repressive state. Thats before we even get to Apples own employees, who as recently as last year were facing restrictions on their ability to discuss pay with colleagues . In Cupertino, censorship begins at home. The mistake, perhaps, is to regard these decisions as politicalwhich Musk would like them to be, because that helps him to paint Apple as a Marxist commune of woke snowflakes. But thats exactly the opposite of the truth. Apples position on free speech is purely capitalist. It purges apps in China because China is an important market to see iPhones. It advertises on Twitter because thats historically been a good place to reach customers and burnish its brand, and it will stop doing so when thats no longer the case. These are cold business decisions. Musk thinks Apple is too political, but when it comes to free speech, I dont think its political enough. Anyway, hopefully, I never need to write about Elon Musk again, particularly as he and Tim Cook are apparently best mates now . After reading his Twitter feed I feel like I need a shower. Let us never speak of this again. Unless you insist after all, I dont want anyone to think I hate free speech in America. Elon Musk and Tim Cook settle misunderstanding over App Store dispute

Days after suggesting Apple wanted to remove Twitter from the App Store, Elon Musk says he has cleared up the misunderstanding on the issue. The world's richest man said on Wednesday that he met Apple CEO Tim Cook at Apple's headquarters, and that the company never considered booting out Twitter from its App Store. That rumour, of course, originated with Musk last week. Musk thanked Cook for showing him around Apple's beautiful HQ in Cupertino, California. He also tweeted: Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so. Good conversation. Among other things, we resolved the misunderstanding about Twitter potentially being removed from the App Store. Tim was clear that Apple never considered doing so. Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 30, 2022 Musk recently criticised Apple and Cook over the company's App Store policies and its commission rules. Apple collects a service charge of anywhere from 15% to 30% of all digital purchases made through apps on iPhones. Musk referred to the Apple fee rules as a hidden 30 per cent tax on the internet. He also claimed Apple was putting pressure on Twitter over content moderation rules, asking if the company dislikes free speech in America. He also noted that Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. The next day he said: Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won't tell us why. Apple was Twitter's largest advertiser in Q1 this year, spending 40 million - about 4% of Twitter's revenue for the period, according to documents seen by The Washington Post . Storm in a teacup Musk now says Apple never intended to ban Twitter. Although it's unclear what was discussed during the reported meeting between Musk and Cook, Apple's ax could have been on the agenda. The tax came under fire in recent years as part of a dispute between Apple and Fortnite maker Epic Games, which wanted to allow people to make payments using external services to avoid Apple's fees. The end result of that saw Apple loosening its restrictions . Neither Apple nor Cook has commented on the meeting, butMusk has removed the tweet suggesting going to war with Apple. Since Musk took control of Twitter in October, the company has seen a sharp decline in income as advertisers have left the site, largely due to Musk's relaxation of content moderation policies . Musk began aggressively firing staff after the acquisition and told employees that the company was losing so much money that bankruptcy was not out of the question . The company is now thought to have lost at least half its workforce. Following the departure of key executives last month - including the CISO, chief compliance officer, chief privacy officer and the head of safety and integrity - the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it was monitoring Twitter with 'deep concern.' The company could be fined millions of dollars for disobeying FTC orders. Earlier this week, the EU warned Musk that Twitter risks fines, and perhaps a ban, if it doesn't adhere to its stringent guidelines for content moderation. Thierry Breton, the EU's commissioner for digital policy, spoke with Musk via video chat to discuss Twitter's readiness for the Digital Services Act (DSA). Breton reportedly gave Musk a number of requirements, including giving up the practice of restoring banned users in an arbitrary manner and committing to an extensive independent audit of the platform by 2023. Breton reiterated that under the DSA, Twitter might be subject to a ban throughout all of Europe or penalties of up to 6% of its worldwide revenue.

Elon Musk Meets With Apple CEO Tim Cook Amid Claims of Twitter App Store Dispute

Twitter CEO Elon Musk today met with Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Apple Park campus in Cupertino, California, according to a tweet shared by Musk this afternoon. Musk thanked Cook for taking him around Apple's headquarters, with no mention of what the two might have discussed. The meeting comes just after Musk on Monday claimed that Apple has mostly stopped offering ads on Twitter, and that Apple had threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store . Thanks @tim_cook for taking me around Apples beautiful HQ pic.twitter.com/xjo4g306gR Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 30, 2022 Musk said that Apple has been making moderation demands , though he did not go into detail on what Apple might have said about moderation. Twitter has been undergoing rapid change since Musk's October takeover, and many employees who handled moderation and policy creation have been fired or have left the company. Apple has cracked down on other social networking apps for lax moderation policies, such as Parler , so there is real danger that Twitter and Apple could end up in a major dispute should Twitter fail to adequately handle inappropriate content. Twitter has already reinstated more than 62,000 suspended accounts, including that of former U.S. President Donald Trump, and it is not yet clear if that will be problematic. Apple and Twitter could also run into issues over the Twitter Blue subscription. Platformer this week said Twitter is delaying the launch of the Twitter Blue service as it seeks a way to avoid Apple's 30 percent cut on iOS devices. The video shared by Musk features the Apple Park duck pond, which has previously been seen in Apple videos and photographs captured by employees. Facebook and Spotify CEOs Slam Apple's App Store

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek today spoke out against Apple's App Store policies, joining Twitter CEO Elon Musk, who earlier this week said that Apple was making moderation demands and had threatened to withhold Twitter from the App Store. At The New York Times DealBook Summit , Zuckerberg said that only Apple attempts to limit the apps that are in the App Store, and that the App Store policies are not sustainable. As noted by CNBC , Zuckerberg claimed that Apple has singled themselves out as the only company that is trying to control unilaterally what apps get on a device, which is not a good place to be. Zuckerberg went on to praise Google for allowing for alternate content on Android phones. Theyve always made it so you can sideload and have other app stores and work directly with phone manufacturers, said Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg has clashed with Apple several times over App Store rules, specifically around various purchases that can be made in the Facebook app. Apple wants a 30 percent cut of things like in-app boosts , which Facebook does not want to pay. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek, meanwhile, made comments on Twitter claiming that Apple gives developers he illusion of control, and that the App Store is a hreat to the future of the internet that denies consumers choice. So how much longer will we look away from this threat to the future of the internet? How many more consumers will be denied choice? Theres been a lot of talk. Talk is helpful but we need action. @CommerceGov @EU_Commission @vestager Daniel Ek (@eldsjal) November 30, 2022 Ek has clashed with Apple recently over Spotify's new audiobooks feature . Apple rejected Spotify's audiobook update several times and ultimately did not allow Spotify to direct users to purchase audiobooks through an in-app email signup button. Ek and Zuckerberg are longtime Apple critics and have been encouraging lawmakers to force Apple to support alternative app stores on iOS devices to reduce fees. Multiple bipartisan bills have been introduced in the U.S., and if these are ultimately passed, Apple would need to make significant App Store changes. Tweetbot Maker Tapbots Working on 'Ivory' Mastodon App

Tapbots , the company behind the popular Tweetbot app designed for Twitter, is working on developing a new app called Ivory that integrates with the Mastodon social network. Currently in beta testing, the Ivory app is in the early stages of development, with many features that still need to be implemented and bugs that need to be worked out, but it is a promising start. Many Twitter users have been swapping over to Mastodon following the Twitter takeover by Elon Musk, and Mastodon has seen a major uptick in adoption over the past few weeks. The app now has over one million monthly active users, with roughly one half of those added since October. Mastodon is a decentralized social network that allows for people to create their own servers, and it is more confusing to use than Twitter. The website and the app are not immediately familiar to Twitter users, but apps like Ivory could ease the transition for those who are leaving Twitter. Ivory has a design that is quite similar to Tweetbot at the current time, offering access to a timeline, @ mentions, search, profile, and other options. There's also a dedicated compose button shaped like a horn, as posts on Mastodon are referred to as oots. It will be some time yet before Ivory is ready for a public release as a number of features like push notifications and lists are not yet implemented, but Tweetbot fans who have moved to Mastodon will be pleased to hear about the Tapbots project. Apple CEO Tim Cook Meeting With Republican Lawmakers in Washington

Apple CEO Tim Cook this week traveled to Washington, D.C. to meet with top Republican lawmakers, reports Bloomberg . Cook is said to be aiming to create ties with the GOP as it prepares to assume control of the House in the new year. Cook has scheduled meetings with Ohio's Jim Jordan, California's Darrell Issa, and Washington's Cathy McMorris Rodgers. Jordan and McMorris Rodgers will likely be involved with committees that are overseeing the tech industry, heading up the House Judiciary Committee and the House Energy and Commerce Committee, respectively. Apple is dealing with U.S. antitrust legislation that could result in major changes to the company's App Store policies. There are five separate bipartisan bills that are being considered, and just this week, Twitter CEO Elon Musk spurred lawmaker interest in Apple with his claim that Apple has threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store and has stopped advertising on Twitter. As Bloomberg points out, Cook's meetings were scheduled weeks before Musk's Twitter rant, but Twitter could be a topic of discussion. Jim Jordan, who Cook is meeting with, has publicly supported Musk, for example. Cook will also meet with Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas, Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich from New Mexico and Democratic Senator Brian Schatz from Hawaii as Apple aims to steer regulators away from App Store legislation and questions about the company's device manufacturing in China. Twitter flooded with Chinese spam, obscuring protest news

Users who search for major Chinese cities see spam from accounts that appear to be bots There has been a noticeable increase in spam and suggestive ads on Twitter over the past three days in what seems to be an effort to lessen the flow of news about demonstrations against the Chinese government's coronavirus restrictions in the country. Analysts said that when they attempted to search any large Chinese city on Twitter, they observed a flood of spam tweets showing porn, escort services and gambling content. Chinese bots are flooding Twitter with *escort ads*, possibly to make it more difficult for Chinese users to access information about the mass protests. Some of these acts have been dormant for years, only to become active yesterday after protests broke out in China. for example: pic.twitter.com/QRYLQu09Pq Mengyu Dong (@dong_mengyu) November 27, 2022 Because of the spam, it has become difficult to track demonstrations, particularly for local activists who access Twitter through a virtual private network (VPN) to circumvent the Chinese government's censorship of protests on domestic social networks. The demonstrations mainly intensified after a fatal apartment block fire in Urumqi, the provincial capital of Xinjiang. Critics pointed the blame at the Chinese government's strict lockdown measures for Covid-19, claiming that they caused delays for firemen, thereby contributing to the fatalities. Some protesters have demanded the resignation of the Communist Party's leadership, including President Xi Jinping. Chinese social media strictly forbids discussion of such nationwide protests, so demonstrators have resorted to foreign platforms like Twitter and Telegram for communication. All major Western social networks are blocked in China, and the only way to access them is via a VPN, which is also hard to get in local app stores. On Twitter, the location-based escort ads in Chinese language are nothing new, but the frequency with which they have been obstructing searches for Chinese cities these days is unusual. The spam campaign was spotted by researchers at Stanford University and elsewhere. Thread: Search for Beijing/Shanghai/other cities in Chinese on Twitter and you'll mostly see ads for escorts/porn/gambling, drowning out legitimate search results. Data analysis in this thread suggests that there has been a *significant* uptick in these spam tweets. pic.twitter.com/Ao46g2ILzf Air-Moving Device (@AirMovingDevice) November 28, 2022 Alex Stamos, the director of the Stanford Internet Observatory, said his team was working to ascertain the scope and effectiveness of the campaign. Still working on our own analysis, but here is some good initial data that points to this being an intentional attack to throw up informational chaff and reduce external visibility into protests in China (Twitter being blocked for most PRC citizens): https://t.co/kPK7nMeCPu Alex Stamos (@alexstamos) November 28, 2022 Stamos estimated that more than 95% of tweets that appear when you search for Beijing are from spam accounts. Stamos said that he had previously warned about the dangers that Elon Musk was incurring by firing so many of the company's staff, and that this looks to be the first big failure to halt a government interference campaign under Musk's leadership. Twitter's staff has been reduced via mass layoffs and resignations from around 7,500 to approximately 2,000, according to media reports. Some groups, such as those that address safety issues, human rights violations, and fraudulent foreign influence activities, have been downsized to only a few members or have no staff at all. A former Twitter employee told the Washington Post that the new campaign was another exhibit where there are now even larger holes to fill. The China influence operations and analysts at Twitter all resigned. The surge in spam also presents questions about Musk's position on bots. He attempted to back out of the purchase of Twitter over claims that the social media platform was concealing the actual number of fake accounts. Because Twitter isn't as well-prepared to deal with the threat, it seems that spammers and other fake accounts could suddenly be a bigger issue than they were before.

Elon Musk Claims Apple Has 'Mostly Stopped' Offering Ads on Twitter and Is Making Moderation Demands

Apple has cut back on its Twitter advertising, according to Twitter CEO Elon Musk. In a tweet, Musk said that Apple has mostly stopped its Twitter ads, asking if Apple hates free speech. Musk went on to publish a poll asking if Apple should publish all censorship actions taken that impact customers and he began retweeting content from companies that Apple has had moderation discussions with. He also retweeted the 1984 parody video from Epic Games that suggested Apple has an App Store monopoly. Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. Do they hate free speech in America? Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 28, 2022 Since Musk took over Twitter, advertisers have been pulling back on Twitter-based ad campaigns because of Musk's approach to moderation and the re-enabling of previously suspended and banned accounts, such as that of former U.S. President Donald Trump. Musk eliminated more than half of Twitter employees over the course of the last few weeks, including many who handled policy creation and content moderation. This has caused issues with advertisers, especially after the bungled launch of the $8 Twitter Blue subscription that included account verification. Twitter users quickly learned they could pay $8 to impersonate high-profile accounts and companies, leading to chaos on the platform. Last week, nonprofit organization Media Matters released a report suggesting Twitter has lost half of its top 100 advertisers. These advertisers spent $2 billion in 2020 and more than $750 million in 2022, so Twitter is facing notable losses in ad revenue. Companies like AT&T, CNN, Dell, Allstate, DirecTV, HP, Nestle, Coca-Cola, Verizon, General Mills, Volkswagen, Wells Fargo, and others are no longer running Twitter ads. Musk has attempted to persuade advertisers to remain on the platform, going as far as personally calling the CEOs of some brands, according to Financial Times . Musk has been erating companies that have pulled out of Twitter ads, leading some to reduce spending to a bare minimum to avoid further confrontation with Musk, who has been championing free speech and civil debate on the platform. Apple App Store chief Phil Schiller deactivated his Twitter account following Musk's takeover, a signal that Apple executives are not pleased with the direction that Twitter is heading, which could lead to additional clashes over moderation in the future. Last Friday, Musk commented on Apple's App Store policies, giving some insight into what might happen if content on Twitter grows problematic. Musk has confirmed that Apple is making moderation demands and has threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store. Yes Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 28, 2022 Apple has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but wont tell us why Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 28, 2022 Should Twitter get to the point where its lack of moderation causes Apple and Google to remove it from their stores, Musk said that he will make an alternative phone. He said that it hopes it does not come to that, but will do so if there is o other choice. Wacky rumor claims Apple wants to buy soccer club Manchester United

Here on Macworld weve covered dozens of Apple acquisitionsboth real and imaginedover the years. But the latest company that Apple is reportedly interested in buying is a weird one: the soccer club Manchester United. The Daily Star reported Thursday that bosses of Apple have expressed an interest in discussing a potential deal with current owners Joel and Avram Glazer. The asking price was initially set at 8.25 billion (roughly $10 billion) but Apple is understood to be planning to spend something closer to 5.8 billion. These are enormous sums in the world of sport and would smash the record price of 4.25 billion set by Chelsea FC in May. It would also represent a healthy profit for the Glazers, who bought Man Utd for less than 800m in 2005. But its comparatively small change for Apple, which earned its bid money in diminished iPad revenue alone last quarter . Apple will begin streaming MLS games next year. Apple Well go on the record before we go any further and say that this almost certainly isnt going to happen. Apple has no experience running a sports team, and despite our flippant comment about iPad revenue, this would represent a colossal gamble. Its wise to be skeptical about any Apple acquisition rumor, but even more so about ones involving Manchester United: as weve seen with Elon Musk and Conor McGregor, both of whom have claimed to be interested in buying the club, its an easy target for publicity hunters. Encompassing two of the biggest brand names in the world, this story is the perfect storm for rumormongers: if it wasnt true, someone would make it up. That said, theres a certain appeal to the idea. Ted Lasso, the Apple TV+ comedy about a clueless but lovable American coach taking over a venerable British football team, is one of the services greatest successes of the past two years, and the company will soon start streaming MLS soccer matches in the US. Owning a Premiership club would give it leverage in expanding coverage overseas. And it would certainly be a great advertising tool to have Man Utd kits emblazoned with the Apple logo. (Though a potential wrinkle is that Qualcomm entered a multi-year global strategic collaboration with the soccer club in August, which could make for some fun meetings.) But as interesting as the story is, its unlikely to be true. As they say in soccer, this is a knock-on pitching outside leg stump. Foul and a miss. New balls, please. Apple

Tesla claims it will support the police investigation into a fatal accident in China

BEIJING: Two people were killed and three injured after local media reported that the driver lost control of the vehicle, with US automaker Tesla saying on Sunday that it would support Chinese police as they try to remove one of its Model Y vehicles. According to Jimu News, which posted video of a high-speed car colliding with other cars and a cyclist on November 5 in the southern province of Guangdong, two people were killed: a motorcyclist and a high school student. Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker warned against believing rumours in a message to Reuters on Sunday. Elon Musk's message from the electric vehicle maker said, Police are currently seeking a third-party evaluation agency to identify the truth behind this accident, and we will actively provide the necessary assistance. Also Read: Is Honda going to launch new Bikes? The crash was one of the top trending topics on the Weibo social media platform on Sunday and China is Tesla's second largest market. According to traffic police and an unnamed relative of the driver, the 55-year-old had a problem with the brake pedal as he was preparing to stop in front of his family's store, but the cause of the incident in Chaozhou city has not been determined. According to Jimu News. Tesla claimed that the video did not show the car's brake lights moving at high speed, and its data revealed problems such as a lack of action to apply the brakes at any point during the trip. Also Read: Ford and GM are negotiating battery metal hubs with Posco Chemical In the county where the accident occurred, calls to police on Sunday remained unanswered. Brake failure claims against Tesla have previously surfaced in China. According to the company's statement to Reuters, a Chinese car owner was ordered by a court to publicly apologize and pay the company after it was determined he told the media about problems with his brakes. The comments made were false and damaged Tesla's reputation. Tesla's claim could not be immediately confirmed by Reuters. At the Shanghai Auto Show last year, a disgruntled customer climbed onto Tesla's roof to express his displeasure over the way the company handled its complaints about faulty brakes that led to the car crash. The incident created a lot of buzz on social media. Also Read: Amazon India and TVS Motor collaborate to deploy EVs In that case, Tesla claimed an over speeding violation was attributed to its accident, but committed to enhancing the way it handles customer complaints.
