Congress should tell nation who prevented military retaliation after 26/11 attack: Modi

MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday targetted the Congress party saying that it should reveal to the nation who prevented India's military response after the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. PM Modi was in Mumbai to inaugurate the newly constructed Navi Mumbai International Airport and multiple metro lines. A Congress leader, who has also been Union home minister, has said that a country prevented India's military retaliation post-26/11 Mumbai terror attack in 2008. The party should clarify, Modi said. This weakness of Congress strengthened terrorists, Modi said. The nation has the right to know who stopped India from going ahead with a military retaliation after the Mumbai terror attack, he added. For us, nothing is more important than the safety and security of our nation and its citizens, Modi said, referring to Operation Sindoor launched after the Pahalgam terror attack. Modi said his government's target is to make India the global aviation's Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub by the end of this decade. Due to UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) Yojana, lakhs of people have taken to the skies for the first time in the past decade, fulfilling their dreams, he said. In 2014, there were only 74 airports in India, but now there are more than 160, he said. The vision of the Viksit Bharat envisages 'gati aur pragati' (momentum and progress), Modi said. During the event, Modi highlighted the achievements of the double-engine government referring to the BJP-led administrations at both the Centre and in Maharashtra and accused the previous state government of stalling progress in Mumbai. Mumbai is one of the most vibrant cities in the world, and every minute here is valuable. The new metro lines will significantly reduce travel time, and the new airport will connect the city and its surrounding regions to the world, Modi said. We are investing every penny in development unlike the previous government, which was mired in corruption and hindered growth, he added. (With inputs from PTI.)

Madhya Pradesh SIT probes drug firm in Tamil Nadu after 20 kids die of cough syrup poisoning, factory sealed

A seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Madhya Pradesh, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, conducted a probe at the factory of a drug manufacturer near Chennai on Wednesday to investigate the deaths of 20 children in Madhya Pradesh allegedly caused by contaminated cough syrup. The SIT later visited the companys registered office in Chennai to gather documents and CCTV footage. Officials said the factory owner had left the premises three days earlier. The Tamil Nadu police assisted the SIT during the inspections. The pharmaceutical company, based in Chennai, had supplied the cough syrup Coldrif to markets in Puducherry, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and other states. Earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had sealed the pharmaceutical factory in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday evening. Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla said on October 7 that 20 children had died from kidney failure after consuming the syrup. Tests conducted by the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration found the samples from the factory to be adulterated, following which production was ordered to stop immediately. Five children remain critical after contaminated cough syrup claims 20 lives The state government also banned the sale of Coldrif from October 1 and directed that all stocks be removed from the market. The company has not yet issued any statement. 'Public alert - stop use notice' against two cough syrups in Telangana Meanwhile, the Telangana Drugs Control Administration issued a public alert stop use notice for two other syrups -- Relife and Respifresh TR -- manufactured by Gujarat-based firms, after laboratory tests in Madhya Pradesh detected the toxic chemical Diethylene Glycol (DEG). Authorities urged the public to stop using these products and report them to local drug control offices. The incident came to light after six children, aged between one and seven, from different parts of the Parasia area (also known as Koylanchal for its coal mining activity), died from kidney-related complications after consuming adulterated cough syrup. The children initially suffered from cold and mild fever. Local doctors prescribed routine medications, including cough syrups. After taking the medicines, the children initially appeared to recover, but within days their symptoms returned, accompanied by a sharp decline in urine output. Dr Praveen Soni , who prescribed the syrup to kids in Madhya Pradesh, has been arrested on charges of negligence. However, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) defended Soni , arguing that systemic lapses by the pharmaceutical company and regulatory authorities also contributed to the tragedy. The IMA has demanded strict action against those responsible for the deaths linked to contaminated cough syrup, compensation for affected families, and support for the doctor. It criticised the poor drug regulations and mishandling of the case. Tests suggest the syrup contained toxic chemicals and was wrongly sold for children under four. The Madhya Pradesh government has suspended two drug inspectors and a deputy director, and transferred the state drug controller. The Union Health Ministry found one of ten syrup samples failed quality tests and has launched inspections in six states. Several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, have banned Coldrif syrup and seized contaminated batches. The Punjab and Himachal Pradesh governments have also banned the sale, distribution and use of Coldrif cough syrup. Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh have started safety drives and surveys, while opposition parties have demanded accountability and a judicial probe into the regulatory lapses behind the tragedy. A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Supreme Court demanding a CBI probe and sweeping reforms in Indias drug safety framework following the incident. (With inputs from PTI)

Five children remain critical after contaminated cough syrup claims 20 lives

At least 20 children have died in Madhya Pradesh after consuming the toxic Coldrif cough syrup, while five more children remain in critical condition undergoing treatment in neighbouring Nagpur, officials confirmed. The development has prompted heightened scrutiny of the manufacturer and regulatory processes across multiple states. Most victims were from Chhindwara district, with two from Betul and one from Pandhurna. The children reportedly developed kidney failure after consuming the syrup manufactured by Sresan Pharmaceuticals, a company based in Kancheepuram, Tamil Nadu. Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla said that of the five critically ill children in Nagpur, two are admitted at AIIMS, two in a government hospital, and one in a private hospital, adding that everyone is trying their best to save their lives. Shukla met with families of the affected children during his visit to Nagpur. A police team from Chhindwara has reached Kancheepuram to arrest the owner of the company that produced the contaminated syrup. The Madhya Pradesh Police have also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and registered a case against the manufacturer. Dr. Praveen Soni , who prescribed the syrup, has been arrested on charges of negligence. However, Indian Medical Association president Dr. Dilip Bhanushali defended Soni , arguing that systemic lapses by the pharmaceutical company and regulatory authorities also contributed to the tragedy. Demanding immediate action on the actual culprits and adequate compensation for the affected families and the doctor who is a victim of defamation, the IMA on Monday had said they are concerned with the incompetence and inadequacy of the drug regulatory system in the country and mishandling of this unfortunate incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the syrup may have contained toxic chemicals, and authorities noted that the product should not have been prescribed to children under four years, yet was being sold freely. In response, the Madhya Pradesh government has taken administrative action, suspending two drug inspectors and a deputy director of the Food & Drug Administration, and transferring Drug Controller Dinesh Maurya. The Union Health Ministry said 19 samples of the syrup have been collected for testing. Of the 10 reports received so far, one failed quality standards, while the remaining met regulatory norms. The ministry has also initiated risk-based inspections of pharmaceutical units in six states to identify potential lapses in production and testing processes. The crisis has widened beyond Madhya Pradesh, with similar cases reported in Rajasthan. Several states, including Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh, have banned Coldrif syrup, seized contaminated batches, and launched investigations into its distribution. The Maharashtra FDA has also restricted the sale and use of Batch No. SR-13, which was found contaminated. States have begun implementing stricter safety measures. Rajasthan has started door-to-door surveys, awareness campaigns, and technical committees to investigate child health issues, while also mandating special warning labels on syrups harmful to children and pregnant women. Uttar Pradesh has seized contaminated batches and other products from the same manufacturer following nationwide alerts. Families of the victims remain devastated. Opposition leaders have demanded accountability and a judicial inquiry into the tragedy. Congress had said that a government probe alone cannot uncover the full truth and called for an independent investigation into systemic failures in drug regulation that may have contributed to the deaths. CCEA nod to 4 multi-tracking railway projects

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved four major railway multi-tracking projects worth Rs 24,634 crore, spanning nearly 900 km across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Chhattisgarh. The projects are expected to be completed by 2030-31 and are designed to ease congestion, boost freight capacity, and enhance connectivity across 18 districts in these states. The decision is seen as major infrastructure push under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, aimed at integrating rail development with multi-modal connectivity and improving logistical efficiency. The government expects the additional rail capacity to bring wide-ranging economic and environmental benefits. Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the new projects would significantly enhance Indian Railways operational efficiency and reliability. The increased line capacity will significantly improve mobility, resulting in improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways, he said. The four projects include construction of third and fourth rail lines between Wardha and Bhusawal (314 route km) in Maharashtra, fourth line between Gondia and Dongargarh (84 km), cutting across Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh, two lines between Vadodara and Ratlam (259 km), spanning Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh and one between Itarsi, Bhopal, and Bina (237 km) in Madhya Pradesh. Together, the projects will expand the Indian Railways network by approximately 894 route kilometres and are expected to ease movement along high-density corridors. The rail corridors covered are crucial for both passenger and freight movement and will reduce delays caused by capacity constraints. The Railway Minister said that the four projects will improve connectivity to 3,633 villages with a total population of about 85.84 lakh, including two Aspirational DistrictsVidisha in Madhya Pradesh and Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh. These infrastructure upgrades are aligned with the Prime Ministers vision of a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and are expected to create significantemployment and self-employment opportunities in the region, Vaishnaw added. The projects will also facilitate access to key tourism and heritage sites such as Sanchi, Satpura Tiger Reserve, Bhimbetka Rock Shelters, Hazara Falls, and Navegaon National Parkall important destinations that currently face logistical bottlenecks. The newly sanctioned lines are projected to handle additional freight traffic of 78 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), including key commodities like coal, cement, fly ash, steel, food grains, and containers. Vaishnaw also stressed the green benefits of railway expansion over road transport. The projects are expected to cut Indias oil imports by 28 crore litres and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 139 crore kilogramsequivalent to planting around six crore trees. The capacity augmentation has been formulated under the PM Gati Shakti framework, which promotes integrated planning across ministries.

Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the new projects would significantly enhance Indian Railways' operational efficiency and reliability. These infrastructure upgrades are aligned with the Prime Ministers vision of a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) and are expected to create significant employment and self-employment opportunities in the region, Vaishnaw added. Indian Railways, being an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transport system, will help reduce dependence on fossil fuels, he said. The aim is to provide seamless movement of goods and people through coordinated infrastructure development. The approval is also seen as one of the most significant recent investments in Indian Railways network expansion strategy which is expected to play a critical role in achieving the countrys broader economic and sustainability goals.
