Thackeray brothers seal alliance for BMC polls, warn Marathi voters against division
MUMBAI: Cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray on Wednesday formally announced an alliance between the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and other municipal corporation elections, appealing to Marathi voters not to allow divisions, warning that such a split would weaken the authority of the Marathi manoos over Mumbai. Addressing a joint gathering, Uddhav Thackeray said that the unity of Marathi people was crucial to safeguard Mumbai. He recalled the sacrifices made during the United Maharashtra movement and linked them to the present political moment. During the separation of Maharashtra and Mumbai, 106 Marathi people sacrificed their lives. In the United Maharashtra movement, our grandfather, father and relatives also participated. Shiv Sena was born for the rights and welfare of the Marathi manoos in Mumbai. Some people want to take over Mumbai; we Thackerays are here to oppose it. We have come together to remain together. If anyone attacks Mumbai, then we will not tolerate it and will fight for it, Uddhav Thackeray said. He also accused the BJP of spreading misinformation during the recent Assembly elections. Referring to the slogan katenge to batenge, he said it was used as part of a fake propaganda campaign. Now, I want to tell the Marathi manoos, if you get divided, then the Marathi manoos will lose authority over Mumbai. Therefore, we need to remain united at any cost and condition, the Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said. Thackeray brothers to join hands for BMC polls after 20 years Raj Thackeray said that he had always maintained that Maharashtra was bigger than any individual issue and that he was prepared to come together in the larger interest of the state. I had said earlier also that Maharashtra is bigger than any issue. For Maharashtra, I was ready to come together, and that has happened today, Raj Thackeray said. Using a sharp metaphor, he alleged that political parties were indulging in poaching leaders from rival outfits. There are many child-stealing gangs active in Maharashtra, and now there are two more additions: two political parties have started stealing from other parties, he said. Raj Thackeray said the alliance had deliberately decided not to announce candidate names or disclose seat-sharing details at this stage. We have decided, as a precaution, not to announce candidates names now. We will also not share how many seats Sena and MNS will contest. But I can say with confidence that the next mayor of Mumbai will be Marathi, and that will be from our alliance only, he said. He also warned of what he described as an impending negative and fake campaign by the BJP and its machinery. I have a lot of videos and will release them in response to their propaganda, Raj Thackeray said, adding, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis should not teach us about Hindutva. The alliance announcement is seen as a significant political development ahead of the civic polls, with both parties projecting Marathi unity as the central theme of their campaign.

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) boss Raj Thackeray on Wednesday announced the alliance of their parties ahead of the January 15 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, putting months of speculation to rest. Addressing a joint news conference with Raj, Uddhav said the two parties have come together to stay together. Vaibhav Suyavanshi Hits 36-ball Ton For Bihar In Vijay Hazare Trophy Opener
Vijay Hazare Trophy Plate: India's 14-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, made headlines again after smashing a 36-ball century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy Plate league opener for Bihar against Arunachal Pradesh at the JSCA Oval Ground on Wednesday. Suryavanshi's century off 36 balls was the second-fastest hundred by an Indian man in overall List A cricket, after Punjab batter Anmolpreet Singh's 35-ball century against Arunachal in the Vijay Hazare competition last season. Overall, Suryavanshi's 36-ball ton ranks as the joint-fourth-fastest ever in the world in List A cricket. The teenage batter racked up his 150 off only 54 deliveries before being dismissed for 190 off 84, as Bihar are currently 379/2 in 39 overs. Earlier this month, Suryavanshi smashed an unbeaten century for Bihar against Maharashtra in an Elite Group B Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. He scored an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls, his maiden ton in the T20 domestic cricket tournament and third overall in the format. His century also made him the youngest batter to score a century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, at 14 years and 250 days. The 14-year-old cricketer also smashed the record for the highest score by an Indian in U19 Asia Cup history with his 171 off just 95 against the UAE. The explosive southpaw also slammed a ton against the Australia U19 team in Brisbane during a Youth Test match in November. His most recent jaw-dropping innings came in the Rising Stars Asia Cup, where he scored 144 off 42 balls for India A against UAE, smashing 11 fours and 15 sixes. Thackeray brothers to join hands for BMC polls after 20 years
MUMBAI: After a gap of 20 years and following prolonged deliberations, cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray have decided to join hands politically to take on the BJP in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Asias richest civic body, scheduled for January 15 next year. The official announcement of the Thackerays coming together for the BMC and other municipal corporation elections will be made on Wednesday at 12 noon in Mumbai. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said the formal announcement of the Thackeray brothers joining hands would be made on Wednesday at Hotel Blue Sea in Mumbai. Sources said that along with the official declaration of the alliance, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray will address the media and explain the reasons behind their decision to come together Sources said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) has decided to contest 150 seats, while the remaining 77 seats, out of the total 227 in the BMC, will be contested by the Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). Shiv Sena (UBT) seeks alliance with Congress ahead of upcoming BMC polls In the seat-sharing discussions, talks on over 150 seats have been completed, while around 70 seats are yet to be sorted out. There was contention over some seats, mostly from Marathi-dominated areas such as Dadar, Mahim and Parel, where both parties have staked claims. However, we are sure and confident that in the next few days the seat-sharing will be resolved and a concrete plan and manifesto will be prepared, focusing on the Marathi manoos and their welfare, said a source close to Uddhav Thackeray. BJP-led Mahayuti governments decision to impose Hindi in primary schools was the trigger point for both Thackerays to join hands to oppose this decision. Subsequently, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray felt that their alliance should be extended further for the elections to retain the BMC and gain power in other municipal corporation elections. Both understood the gravity and importance of their togetherness, said a senior Shiv Sena (UBT) leader, requesting anonymity. Political observers said that if both Thackerays come together, the split in Marathi votes could be avoided. Besides, the Thackerays are also eyeing Muslim votes, which account for around 18 to 20 per cent of Mumbais electorate. Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS are looking at the Mamu factor, around 28 per cent Marathi and 20 per cent Muslim voters, to fight the BJP. On the other hand, the BJP is planning to consolidate North Indian, Gujarati, Marwari and sections of Marathi votes to secure 123 seats in Mumbai. In this election, the organisational skills of Uddhav Thackeray and the oratory skills of Raj Thackeray will be tested, said a political observer. Bombay HC slams BMC, pollution board over air quality; says authorities failed to ensure compliance
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court on Tuesday pulled up the civic authorities and the pollution control board, saying that while it was not against development or halting construction activities in the city, it only sought strict compliance with norms to curb air pollution. A bench comprising Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad remarked that the authorities have failed to ensure compliance and directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to take serious steps to mitigate the spiralling air pollution in the city. We do not want any construction work or development to stop, but we want compliance. You (authorities) have failed to ensure compliance, the court said, adding that if immediate and effective steps are not taken now, the situation would become impossible to control. If things go out of hand, then nothing will remain within your control, it said. Following the court's directive on Monday, BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani and MPCB secretary Devendra Singh appeared before the bench on Tuesday. Please come up with suggestions. It will not work like this. Apart from being officers, you too are citizens and have a fundamental duty, the court said. The bench was hearing a bunch of petitions raising concerns over the deteriorating air quality index (AQI) in the city. It also took note of the conditions workers are subjected to at construction sites. The right to life was applicable to all, including the poor, the court said, while asking the MPCB if it had issued any advisories for construction sites with regard to the health of workers. You have to issue an advisory for project proponents so that workers' health is not affected. They are exposed to serious health threats. You do not care for the poor, the bench remarked. At least give them a mask. This is common sense. Right to health is a fundamental right, the court said. The MPCB said that it would come up with suggestions on the issue on Wednesday. The court, in its order, noted that a lot more needs to be done by the BMC and MPCB. The bench questioned the civic chief if he steps out of his office to conduct surprise checks and if he has initiated any action against any offender. Senior counsel S U Kamdar, appearing for the civic body, replied in the affirmative and pointed out that since November, the corporation has issued 433 show-cause notices for non-compliance with guidelines and 148 stop-work notices.

Rahul Gandhis remarks in Berlin alleging a full-scale assault on Indias institutional framework have sparked a sharp political backlash, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Congress leader of running down the country abroad and questioning his intent. Addressing a lecture at the Hertie School during his five-day visit to Germany, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha reiterated his vote theft charge against the BJP-led government. There is a full-scale assault taking place on the institutional framework of our country, Gandhi said, claiming there was a problem with the electoral machinery in India and alleging a wholesale capture of institutions. When you look at our intelligence agencies, you look at the CBI, you look at the ED, theyve been weaponised, he said. Look at the number of cases that the ED and the CBI have against the BJP people. Youll find the answer is zero. Gandhi also alleged intimidation of businesspersons supporting the Congress, arguing that institutions were no longer functioning independently. Referring to recent elections, he said, We have won elections in Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, and claimed the party had shown without a shadow of a doubt that it won the Haryana election, while asserting that the Maharashtra polls were not fair. He added that the Opposition had raised direct questions with the Election Commission. The BJP hit back sharply, with party president and Union Minister J P Nadda criticising Gandhi for making such remarks overseas. When Parliament is in session, Rahul Gandhi is in Germany. And he is giving speeches against India there. And when is he giving? When Prime Minister Modi ji is being respected more than 29 times, then he goes and abuses India, he said. according to NDTV . BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also attacked Gandhi, asking whether someone who truly loves Bharat would want the country to fail. In a post on X, Bhandari alleged that Gandhi, along with his ideological patron George Soros, was attempting to foster chaos and unrest in Indian democracy by travelling abroad to unite what he described as anti-India forces.
