Fit India Sundays On Cycle Draws Thousands Nationwide, Marks 61st Edition With Grand Celebration In Dehradun

Fit India Champion Pawan Mann: From the capital city to the peaceful landscapes of Dehradun and nearly all districts across the country, fitness enthusiasts participated in the 61st edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle (SOC) at close to 1000 locations. The FIT India Movement was launched on August 29, 2019, by the Honourable Prime Minister to make fitness a vital part of daily life. Its goal is to promote behavioural changes and encourage a more active lifestyle. Last year, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya introduced Fit India Sundays on Cycle to promote cycling as a fitness activity and to address key issues, including combating obesity and reducing pollution. Over the past year, the programme has reached the remotest areas of the country, transforming into a People's Movement led by the people, with the Fit India Mission of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports serving as a catalyst. This week was no exception, as thousands took to the streets to cycle across the nation. In Delhi, the popular Sunday event was relocated from the city center to Najafgarh, the hometown of legendary cricketer Virendra Sehwag, to broaden participation and attract more fitness enthusiasts. In Najafgarh, excitement was in the air as residents gathered early to experience a unique community fitness program. As 55-year-old Ratan Mittal registered for his cycle, he said, Initiatives like these motivate people of all age groups to step out together. This is not just a fitness movement, it is also a community bonding exercise. My son has come with me, I don't remember the last time we cycled together. This is a wonderful experience. Motivating people included Arjuna Award-winning kabaddi player Shakshi Punia, MMA fighter and Fit India Champion Pawan Mann, Fit India Champion Timsy Bector, and Fit India Ambassador Shivam Gahlot. Bector, who regularly visits SOCs, stated that relocating the event outside central Delhi is an excellent move to raise awareness about the importance of staying fit. Shakshi Punia added, We are delighted to be here. I didn't expect common citizens to show so much interest in a fitness event. Fitness is indeed the most important aspect of our lives and when we do that as a community we motivate each other and it becomes more enjoyable. Pawan Mann added, I think SOC is the largest community fitness movement in the world that happens every Sunday. I thank our Honourable Prime Minister for envisioning the Fit India Movement and our Union Sports Minister for thinking of SOC as a nationwide concept. Meanwhile, the nodal event of the 61st SOC occurred in Dehradun. Surrounded by the foggy hills and winter sunshine of Uttarakhand, the city hosted a lively celebration of fitness, culture, and community spirit as the 61st Fit India Sundays on Cycle took place at the historic Parade Ground on Sunday morning. Over 1000 cyclists set off against the misty hills, tall sal trees, and fresh mountain air; the Parade Ground in Doon Valley turned into a lively hub of movement, music, and enthusiasm, providing the city with a grand event that combined natural beauty with a strong message of healthy living. The event attracted a diverse group of participants, from experienced cyclists to beginners, including school students and senior citizens. As bikes moved through scenic, tree-lined routes, participants took moments to enjoy the picturesque scenery that enhances Dehraduns reputation as one of Indias most beautiful cities. I cycle often, but todays ride was special. The weather, the crowd, and the lively atmosphere made it feel like a festival celebrating fitness, shared Ankit Rawat, a local IT professional, shortly after finishing the rally. Senior dignitaries attended the event in Dehradun on Sunday, February 15, including Shri Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Honble former Governor of Maharashtra and Former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, along with Khajan Das, the Hon'ble Vidayak. Also present were senior officials from the Sports Authority of India and the state administration, highlighting robust institutional backing for the movement. Indian boxings emerging heavyweight talent Nupur Sheoran, along with former India womens hockey goalkeeper and coach Yogita Bali, national triple jump champion Niharika Vashisht, and skilled fencer Rishika Khajuria, brought added sporting prominence to the morning by engaging with participants and emphasizing that fitness is a lifelong commitment. Also present was Indian mountaineer Tashi Malik, a Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award winner, who stressed the significance of endurance and discipline. Olympian race walker Manish Singh Rawat, a proud representative of Uttarakhand, participated in the celebrations alongside Arjuna Award-winning basketball legend Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, whose nearly two-decade-long career continues to inspire young athletes nationwide. The presence of Fit India influencers and community role models provided additional inspiration. The event highlighted various routes to health and resilience, featuring endurance enthusiasts like Tara and Sushila from Two Fit To Quit, as well as fitness advocates including Shanky Singh, Pratibha Thapliyal, Damini Chopra, and Vikram Jadav. Shri Koshiyari, aged 83, emphasized the importance of youth maintaining fitness. Regardless of whether you're a sportsman, you should embody a sportsman spirit. We must always uphold this attitude. It should be visible in all areas, he stated. Referring to the fitness mantra from Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he added, Our Hon'ble PM works 20 hours a day himself. It shows that if we have the determination and fitness, being fit is not impossible at all. We want every youth to remain fit. Let's use all of the seven days for cycling. Colleges and universities served as special partners for this edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle. A multiple-time gold medallist at the World Boxing Cup and a silver medallist at the World Championships medallist, Nupur Sheoran said, I wasn't expecting so many people to turn out this morning and it is really so amazing. I was having flashbacks of my childhood when I was cycling along with the group. It was a really exciting ride! Shri Koshiyari, aged 83, emphasized the importance of youth maintaining fitness. Regardless of whether you're a sportsman, you should embody a sportsman spirit. We must always uphold this attitude. It should be visible in all areas, he stated. Bharat AI: A Vision For Sustainable Growth And Public Welfare

The recent SaaSpocalypsea market shift that saw nearly 2 lakh crore in Indian IT valuation impacted by new AI automation toolsis a significant moment for reflection. As India moves to the front lines of the global AI race through the IndiaAI Mission, we have a unique opportunity to define a model of Bharat AI that harmonizes rapid innovation with our foundational commitment to a welfare state. While tech visionaries like Elon Musk suggest that AI may eventually lead to a Universal High Income, where the need for traditional work disappears, this transition carries a different weight for a nation of 1.4 billion. For India, the path forward can be one that ensures the benefits of AI are not concentrated among a few but are shared across the social fabric. By treating Bharat AI as a public utilitymuch like our world-leading Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)we can ensure that technology serves as a pillar for national resilience rather than just an engine for private wealth. To be truly sustainable, Bharat AI must find its greatest application in the heart of the Indian economy: the rural agricultural sector. While predictive AI tools already exist in pockets of Indian agriculture, they often operate as isolated islands of innovation. For our 1.4 billion people, AI cannot remain a luxury for the few. The sustainable Bharat AI model must transition from fragmented private tools to a unified National Predictive Shield. By controlling the underlying data architecture, the state can ensure these tools are deployed as a form of Careproviding every small-holder farmer with a sovereign, multilingual advisor that protects their crops from pests and their families from debt. This is how we can use our AI initiative to empower every Indian to participate in our national progress. This balanced approach can also extend to our environmental goals. It is well documented that large-scale AI is resource-intensive; a single 100-megawatt data center can consume as much water daily as 6,500 households. In India, aligning our digital ambitions with our climate goals presents a leadership opportunity. By encouraging the use of renewable energy and advanced water-recycling technologies, we can protect our local ecosystems and the Air Quality Index (AQI). In this vision, Bharat AI becomes a catalyst for a cleaner environment, proving that high-tech growth and ecological health can go hand in hand. Is Gen Z Over-Relying On AI And Influencers For Skincare? Also Watch: Our Constitution envisions an economy where resources subserve the common good. Instead of the disruptive labor models seen elsewhere, Bharat AI can be designed as a National Co-pilot. Policy frameworks that encourage AI to augment our diverse workforce will support long-term stability. The IndiaAI Impact Summit is the perfect stage to showcase this vision. By prioritizing a welfare-first approach, India can lead a global shift toward AI that is not only powerful but also sustainable, equitable, and firmly anchored in the public interest. Tamil Nadu Tops In Hiring Professors Of Practice, Followed By Maharashtra & Gujarat: UGC

New Delhi: Tamil Nadu is leading the way in hiring industry experts as professors of practice in its Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to impart real-world experiences in the classroom. The state is followed by Maharashtra and Gujarat, according to UGC data. The University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2022 released guidelines to hire professors of practice (PoP) at HEIs to inject professional acumen into classroom environments, in order to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The position is strictly temporary and does not displace sanctioned posts. Eligibility demands a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience - ideally in senior positions. According to the data, 1,841 PoPs have been hired by 349 HEIs so far, the maximum of them being in Tamil Nadu (395). US: 22-Year-Old IIT Madras Alumnus Saketh Sreenivasaiah Found Dead 6 Days After Going Missing In California While 193 PoPs have been hired in Maharashtra (193), Gujarat and Karnataka have appointed 179 and 170 professionals, respectively. Leading the way in hiring industry professionals in the academic workforce are private universities, while the central universities have hired only 15 PoPs so far. In contrast, deemed-to-be universities have made 699 appointments, private universities have reached 715, state universities added 212 PoPs, and colleges have employed 200 PoPs. India's higher education landscape includes 56 central, 460 state, 128 deemed-to-be, and 510 private universities, together with more than 45,000 colleges, signalling the limited diffusion of PoP appointments at central universities. Engineering Meets Devotion: NIT Warangal Hostel Students Unite for Weekly Hanuman Chalisa In order to bring in distinguished experts from various fields of engineering, science, technology, entrepreneurship, etc., and to develop courses and curriculum to meet the industry and societal needs and to enable the HEls to work with industry experts on joint research project, concept of professor of practice has been adopted, and thereby provide exposure and mentorship to students by domain experts, a senior UGC official said. The maximum duration of service of a professor of practice at a given institution should not exceed three years and is extendable by one year in exceptional cases, and the total service should not exceed four years under any circumstances, he added. The official explained that the PoP scheme provides an opportunity for those in leadership positions in different fields to come on an honorary basis so as to give back to society and contribute towards nation-building. LoP Rahul Gandhi Seeks Answers On GM Imports In Proposed US Trade Pact

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday raised a series of pointed questions over the proposed India-US trade deal, alleging that it could harm Indian farmers and compromise the countrys agricultural self-reliance. In a post on X, Gandhi said that under the guise of a US trade deal, India may be witnessing a betrayal of its farmers. He sought answers from the Prime Minister on key aspects of the agreement, particularly relating to agricultural imports and genetically modified (GM) products. US trade deal : 1. DDG import ? GM distillers grain ? Rahul Gandhi (@RahulGandhi) February 15, 2026 Gandhi questioned the implications of importing Distillers Dried Grains (DDG), asking whether it would mean Indian cattle being fed GM American maize-based feed. He further asked if such a move would make Indias dairy sector indirectly dependent on the US agricultural industry. The Congress leader also expressed concern over the potential import of GM soybean oil. He warned that farmers in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and other soybean-producing states could face another price shock if cheaper imports flood the market. 'No Understanding Of Economics': Piyush Goyal Slams Rahul Gandhi Over Tariff Provisions In India-US Interim Trade Agreement Remarks Seeking clarity on references to additional products in the trade negotiations, Gandhi asked whether this signalled future pressure to open up pulses and other crops to US imports. He also demanded an explanation of what removing non-trade barriers would entail. According to him, there are fears that India could be pressured to dilute its stance on GM crops, weaken procurement systems, or reduce Minimum Support Price (MSP) and bonuses. Once this door is opened, how will we prevent it from opening wider every year? Gandhi asked, adding that farmers deserve transparent answers as the issue concerns not just the present but the long-term control of Indias agricultural sector. The government has not yet responded to the concerns raised in the post.

Rising Intervention, Not Rising Crime: Maharashtra Battles Child Marriage

Good news rarely arrives with a label that says good. One must peel back the surface of headlines to see what the numbers truly mean. The same careful reading is required when we confront disturbing statistics. When reports revealed that authorities in Maharashtra stopped 6,428 child marriages in seven years, many reacted with alarm. Commentators spoke of a spike. Some suggested the state was sliding backward while India aims to eliminate child marriage by 2030. The assumption was simple: more cases stopped must mean more child marriages occurring. But that conclusion mistakes visibility for growth. A rise in interventions does not automatically indicate a rise in crime. Child marriage has long existed in silence, shielded by social acceptance and underreporting. When cases surface and are prevented, it often signals that communities are speaking up and systems are responding. Earlier data underscores the depth of the challenge. Drawing from Census 2011, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, in 2017, identified 70 districts across 13 states with high child marriage prevalence. Sixteen of those districts were in Maharashtra. The burden was real. What changed was not the existence of the problem, but the response to it. At the national level, awareness campaigns such as Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat brought conversations about girls education, legal consequences, and early marriage into communities once beyond the reach of policy messaging. Over time, child marriage began to be viewed less as tradition and more as a violation. At the state level, enforcement strengthened. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 provided a firm legal foundation, and Maharashtra reinforced it through the Maharashtra Prohibition of Child Marriage Rules, 2022. These rules introduced accountability at the grassroots. Schools must report prolonged absences. Child Marriage Prohibition Officers monitor dropouts and coordinate with gram sabhas. District initiatives further shifted the landscape. Campaigns led by local police in Solapur demonstrated how law enforcement can prevent rather than merely react. By tracking vulnerable cases and directly engaging families, authorities disrupted marriages before they occurred and signalled that child marriage is not a private affair immune from scrutiny. For instance, 17 NGO partners of Just Rights for Children are working in 30 vulnerable districts of Maharashtra and have stopped 10,556 child marriages in the last one year. Just Rights for Children is the countrys largest network with over 250 partner NGOs working across the country for child protection. Working on the 3P model of Prevention, Protection and Prosecution, the NGOs work in tandem with administration and law enforcement agencies to end child marriage by 2030. In a recently conducted research, Tipping Point to Zero: Evidence towards a Child Marriage Free India, by Centre for Legal Action and Behavioural Change for Children (C-LAB), an initiative by India Child Protection, clearly shows that local authorities such as panchayats and gram sabhas, and NGOs have a huge role to play in this shift in Maharashtra. The report showed that 100% respondents were aware of the laws about child marriage and they credited NGOs (81%) and local authorities (73%) as the top sources of their information on child marriage laws. Higher reporting, then, is not evidence of decline. It signals accountability. Each prevented marriage represents a child protected. The more urgent question is not why numbers are rising, but how many cases still remain unseen. The writer is president, Mahatma Phule Samaj Seva Mandal, Karmala District, Solapur

Of this, the main tunnel structure will stretch for 5.5 kilometres, forming the core component of the project. In addition to the tunnel, the alignment will include a 3.28 kilometre long viaduct. The combination of tunnel and elevated structure is intended to create a smoother and more direct passage through the hilly terrain. The alignment has been designed as access controlled, indicating limited entry and exit points along the corridor. Complete Bypass Of Existing Ghat Section The project aims to completely bypass the existing Autram Ghat, also known as Kannad Ghat. The present ghat section is a key route connecting Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar with Dhule, passing through a mountainous stretch. Once completed, the new alignment is expected to replace the need to travel through the existing ghat road. The proposed infrastructure would offer an alternative route cutting across the terrain through the planned tunnel and viaduct. The proposal is currently at the stage of seeking forest clearance. Further approvals and processes will determine the timeline for construction and execution of the Autram Ghat Tunnel project in Maharashtra.

Are Skillcations The Future Of Travel For Young Indians?

Mumbai resident Anjali Pednekar (26) travelled somewhat differently for her first solo trip than her friends had imagined. She signed up for a surfing lesson on the western coasts of India for a 10 day course, for a vacation between two jobs, all alone. I was always afraid of the sea so I knew I had to do something that deals with my fear in a structured way. Surfing was the best thing I could have chosen and being alone helped me not be coddled but push on to actually learn the balance needed to surf the waves, she told FPJ. For Pednekar, scuba and underwater courses needed more money but surfing on the coast of Udupi was doable by staying in budget-friendly homestays. From surfing to seaweed farming, pottery to linguisticstravel is increasingly being propelled by the hunger to learn as young Indians open up to the concept of a skillcation. These are trips where travelers can seek immersion in new cultures through a craft, a tangible skill that adds value to your life rather than your resume. Whether it is the art of fabric dyeing or simply writing better by attending retreats led by literary guides, or understanding agricultural practices that have sustained communities for generations, skills have always quietly fueled our desire to explore. But 2026 marks the moment this style of travel becomes a defining wave, replacing passive with purpose. Paper Making at FS Chiang Mai Hilton's Travel Trends Report 2026 reveals a striking shift, where 70% of family travellers are now seeking experiences that connect them to local traditions. Notably, 66% of travelers are actively pursuing cuisine they've never tasted or cultural practices they've never encountered before, marking an end to the era of passive tourism and aimless sightseeing. Travellers like Pednekar are increasingly choosing journeys where discipline enhances relaxation, where learning becomes the luxury, and where travelers return home not just rejuvenated, but transformed. From Escape to Evolution People are travelling less frequently but far more intentionally, choosing experiences that offer value beyond sightseeing, observes Pranav Maheshwari, Co-Founder of StayVista. Post-pandemic behaviour has shifted strongly toward self-improvement and mindful living. Travellers want to return home refreshed and enriched, he says. Private villas and heritage properties naturally support this evolution, offering space, privacy, and flexibilityideal conditions for learning without the pressure of fixed schedules or crowded environments. At StayVista, guests gravitate toward balance by choosing a meaningful activity for a part of the day, followed by long stretches of unwinding, Maheshwari notes. It makes the break feel richer and more memorable, especially during extended stays. The sustainability of this trend is in its foundation. Skill-based travel isn't driven by novelty; it's rooted in personal growth, he explains. What will evolve is the format. Travellers increasingly prefer informal, flexible, and immersive experiences over rigid courses, allowing learning to blend seamlessly with leisure. Crafting Authenticity India's heritage properties are leading this transformation with particular sophistication. At House of Rohet, close to Jodhpur, skill-based experiences aren't packaged trends but align with deep engagements with the place and practice. We've observed a clear shift in how travellers define the value of a holiday, explains Avijit Singh, Managing Director of House of Rohet, which runs three properties in Jodhpur and its vicinity. Guests are seeking immersive, purposeful experiences that leave them with a tangible sense of growth. There's a growing appreciation for craftsmanshipfor skills that take time, patience, and lineage to master. Learning directly from practitioners, in their own environment, adds authenticity that no classroom or online tutorial can replicate, Singh highlights. Their equestrian programme exemplifies this philosophy. Designed not as casual riding fun but as serious engagement with the Marwari horse, it is suited only to experienced riders wishing to refine balance and horsemanship while understanding the breed's cultural significance. Grooming, tacking, and riding through rural landscapes become lessons in respect for both animals and tradition. This depth ensures that the experience remains purposeful rather than recreational, Singh notes. Culinary workshops go beyond demonstrations. Guests cook with chefs, learning about ingredients and techniques of regional cuisine, including family recipes from the erstwhile royal householdsand slow methods evolved over generations. The emphasis is on understanding ingredients, not rushing outcomesa skill increasingly lost in modern kitchens, Singh observes. Pottery sessions facilitated by luxury hotels inherently happen with local potters using traditional wheels and techniques, demanding patience and precision. Embroidery workshops with community weavers allow guests to engage with living craft tradition, appreciating the rhythm, symbolism, and discipline behind each stitch. This is becoming a cherished offering even beyond Rajasthan, slowly inviting guests to understand Indias deeply local heritage crafts in states like Odisha, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Tamilnadu. Avijit highlights that these crafts are not just souvenirs to be consumed, but skills to be respected. The sustainability of skillcations lies in intention. When experiences are thoughtfully designed, culturally respectful, and led by practitioners rather than performers, they create value for both the guest and host, he explains. The Artist's Pilgrimage Tattooing was perhaps not the cup of tea for Boomers and even millennials, but that is changing now, as observes Sunny Bhanushali, founder of Aliens Tattoo Studio & School. Tattooing has always involved travel, he observes. Long before 'skillcation' entered common usage, tattoo artists were moving across cities and countries to learn directly from master artists and the cultures that shaped specific styles. These journeys were never about leisure or comfort. They were about proximity to the source of the art. Many tattoo forms are inseparable from their place of origin. The relationship between tattooing and travel exists because tattooing is shaped by more than technique alone, Bhanushali explains. It is influenced by skin type, cultural symbolism, local rituals, and the psychology of the people receiving the tattoo. These nuances cannot be fully understood through screens. Over the last two decades, Bhanushali has seen hundreds of artists undertake these pilgrimagesto Japan for traditional Irezumi's discipline and deep respect for heritage, Bali for spirituality and sacred geometry's meditative practice, Germany for hygiene systems and procedural precision, Miami for colour realism and high-performance professional tattooing. Many worked without pay, observed quietly, cleaned studios, and earned trust before ever touching skin. For serious tattoo artists, at least one such journey is almost a rite of passage, he notes. Artists don't just return with improved technical skills, Bhanushali reflects. They return with broader perspectives on responsibility, storytelling, and cultural sensitivity. India, particularly Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Goa, are now emerging as a learning destination offering exposure to diverse skin tones, symbolic storytelling, and fusion of traditional and contemporary influences. At our school, we have always encouraged artists to travel, learn globally through tattoo conventions, and return with knowledge that can be interpreted rather than copied, says Bhanushali. This exchange of cultures and techniques allows an art to evolve while staying rooted in authenticity. The Global Wave Skillcations are flourishing globally. At Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai's Chaan Baan cultural hub, guests master Saa paper making from local mulberry barka centuries-old technique found only in Northern Thailandshape clay using ancestral Lanna pottery methods, or craft traditional Thai candles following Princess Dara Rasamee's historic recipes. At Four Seasons Koh Samui, the White Lotus-famed sanctuary, travelers learn Muay Thai in oceanfront rings, unlock Thai massage techniques, or explore rum and tequila tastings that reveal island terroir. National Tourism Day 2026: Why 'Noctourism' Could Be Indias Next Big Travel Trend Maheshwaris advice for aspiring skillcationers is simple: Keep the learning light and flexible, leaving room for rest and spontaneity. Choose a stay with enough space and privacy so the experience feels natural rather than forced. Travel with people who share the intention of a slower, more mindful holiday. And treat the skill as an experience rather than an outcomebecause enjoyment matters far more than mastery. In transforming vacations from passive escapes into active investments in personal evolution, skillcations represent travel's most meaningful renaissance yetone where the journey home carries not just memories, but mastery and a reason to feel confident to dive back into the humdrum of life.

Exploring The Hidden Gems Of Indias Folk Music

One always talks of the richness and diversity of Indian folk music forms, right from the variety of styles and range of instruments to the sheer excess of talent in each language and state. And though festivals like Jodhpur RIFF, Ruhaniyat, Roots at Mahindra and the earlier Paddy Fields have showcased artistes from different sub-genres, one always feels a lot more needs to be done to familiarise styles from across India. In some ways, the seminar on folk music organised recently at the Experimental Theatre by the National Centre for.the Performing Arts (NCPA) and the International Foundation for Fine Arts was quite beneficial to folk lovers. After Shekhar Sen talked about the role of folk music lok geet - in todays culture, there were sessions by Malini Awasthi on Uttar Pradesh styles, Ashit Desai and Hema Desai on Gujarat, Chandan Tiwari on Bihar, Nandesh Vitthal Umap on Maharashtra, Ratnaboli Bose, Rangoli Biswas and group on Bengal and Rakesh Tiwari on Chhattisgarh. Unlike most seminars, which are filled with speeches and PowerPoint presentations, this one was more like a set of live demonstrations with brief lectures thrown in. Some people felt a seminar on folk music was incomplete without Rajasthan and Punjab, but then, there has been an overdose of shows depicting these states. Chhattisgarh and Bihar folk is heard less in Mumbai, and the presentations acted as eye-openers. One also got to know about the specialities of different states like Bhavaiya, Bhatiyali and Jhumur from Bengal, or Garba, Lagangeet or Bhavai from Gujarat or Sohar, Chaiti and Bidaai from Uttar Pradesh. Whatever region they belong to, folk songs come under specific categories. They can involves tales of gods and goddesses, kings and clowns, heroes and villains, real and fictional. They could be associated with different stages, from birth to marriage and bidaai to death. They could be about different festivals or seasons. The scope is endless. Each district in India has its own special flavour, and with spoken dialects changing from town to town, one notices a change in the style of music too. One welcomes the broader intent of the seminar and also the sheer variety of songs sung by the participants. But there are a couple of things one needs to look at. For a field as vast and diverse as Indian folk, a single days programme seemed inadequate. Only one hour was slotted to each participant, and that duration was cut to 40 minutes after the first few sessions. Thus, many of them were only able to skim the surface. A two-day seminar, with representation from more states, would be better. Secondly, considering that entry was open to all without any ticket fee, it was surprising to see so many empty seats. The attendees included musicians, researchers, connoisseurs and students, but there were obviously many who missed something enriching. While one hopes such a seminar becomes a regular feature, one also looks forward to Living Traditions at the Experimental Theatre on March 6 and 7, which will focus on the folk forms of Arunachal Pradesh. Considering that not much is known about the states culture within Mumbai circles, there will be plenty to learn here. Australian Drummer Alexander Flood Brings Jazztronica Groove To Mumbai's NMACC Over the past seven or eight years, barring the Pandemic period, there have been regular activities to promote different folk styles. Showcase Events organised the Sounds From The Desert shows to highlight the music of Rajasthan and later Fankar-e-Kashmir to identify talent from the northern states. The Amarrass nights in Delhi feature folk artistes. Apart from the purer forms, there has been an increase in folk-fusion acts, where the aim is to attract the younger generation by blending traditional styles with jazz, rock or electronica. Besides acts like Indian Ocean, Advaita, Swarathma, Raghu Dixit, Himali Mou and Tapi Project, the Coke Studio series has showcased some talented artistes. Yes, there have been sincere efforts. But they all seem to be travelling in different directions. This is where seminars, workshops and guided listening sessions can play a role in creating more awareness.

Bombay HC Upholds Panvel TDR Premium Rule, Dismisses Developers Challenge

Mumbai, Feb 14: The Bombay High Court has cleared the Maharashtra governments policy allowing developers in Panvel to use a large portion of Transferable Development Rights (TDR) by paying a premium, ruling that the measure is lawful, optional, and aimed at correcting a supply imbalance. A bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad, on Friday, dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the October 7, 2024 notification and the insertion of Clause 10.16 in the Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR). Details of the amendment The amendment allows developers within the jurisdiction of the Panvel Municipal Corporation to utilise up to 75% of the permissible TDR component by paying a premium linked to government land rates. The remaining 25% must still be sourced as TDR. The provision is temporary and will remain in force until Panvels development plan is sanctioned. Petitioners argued that the change undermines the statutory framework under which landowners surrender plots for public purposes in exchange for TDR. Counsels for the petitioners senior advocates Milind Sathe, Anil Anturkar and Anil Sakhare submitted that the premium route would reduce demand for market TDR, financially strain the planning authority, and make TDR less viable. States defence and courts findings The state, through senior advocate Ashutosh Kumbhakoni and advocate Neha Bhide, countered that a large portion of Panvel lacked a sanctioned development plan, leading to negligible TDR generation. This created a sharp mismatch between demand and supply and raised concerns of price cartelisation. The amendment, it said, merely provides an additional option and does not force developers or landowners into any particular route. The court agreed with the state and observed: Having considered the rival submissions and examined the record, we find no merit in the challenge to the notice dated 15th March 2024 or the impugned Notification dated 7th October 2024. We do not find that the said notice or the impugned Notification is arbitrary, illegal and ultra vires the MRTP Act. The judges stressed that the amendment does not change the overall permissible Floor Space Index (FSI) or dismantle the TDR framework. Developers remain free to source TDR entirely from the open market if they choose. Limited scope of judicial review The court also reiterated that judicial review of planning policy and delegated legislation is limited. A regulation cannot be struck down merely because it affects commercial expectations or market value. Rejecting claims that the amendment imposes an illegal levy or renders TDR meaningless, the bench held that valuation remains market-driven and the premium mechanism falls within statutory powers. Also Watch: Bombay HC Upholds States Reservation And Rotation Policy For SC/ST In Local Body Elections We also find no merit in the contention that the impugned amendment renders TDR illusory or valueless. Neither the MRTP Act nor the UDCPR prescribes or guarantees any fixed value for TDR. The value of TDR is governed by market forces of demand and supply. A regulatory measure that incidentally impacts commercial expectations or market valuation cannot, by itself, be a ground to invalidate delegated legislation, particularly when the measure is aimed at correcting distortions in the planning framework, the bench said in its detailed judgment, while dismissing the petitions. Bombay HC Upholds States Reservation And Rotation Policy For SC/ST In Local Body Elections

Mumbai, Feb 14: The Bombay High Court has upheld Maharashtras reservation and rotation policy for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in local body elections, dismissing a batch of petitions that challenged ward delimitation and a rule treating the upcoming polls as the starting point of a new reservation cycle. The petitions were filed after the local bodies elections across the state were announced. However, the High Court heard the petitions last month and reserved it for orders. The judgment was pronounced on Friday. Challenge to Rule XII rejected A bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad ruled that the challenge to Rule XII of the Maharashtra Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis (Manner and Rotation of Reservation of Seats) Rules, 2025 was legally unsustainable. The rule treats the upcoming elections as the first cycle for rotating reserved seats. Several petitioners claimed their objections to ward boundaries were ignored and argued that restarting the rotation cycle would unfairly repeat reservations in some constituencies. According to them, once a ward benefits from reservation, it should not be reserved again until others get a chance. The State defended the framework, saying changes in population and ward boundaries required a fresh system to ensure fair representation. Courts observations on reservation framework Focusing on the SC/ST reservation policy, the court said the Constitution clearly mandates reservation for historically underrepresented communities to promote equality in grassroots democracy. However, it noted that the method of rotation is not rigid and must account for practical realities such as delimitation. The Constitution gives a mandate to the State to accord special treatment to underrepresented communities, the bench observed, describing reservation as an important tool of social justice. The judges said some overlap in reserved seats may occur when boundaries or population patterns change, and such repetition does not automatically violate constitutional principles. Emphasising harmonious interpretation of the rules, the court said laws must be read in a way that makes them workable and supports their purpose. It added that the right to contest elections is regulated by statute and cannot override a valid reservation framework. Petitions dismissed Stressing that timely local body elections are vital for effective self-governance, the bench concluded that the petitions lacked merit and dismissed them, allowing the revised SC/ST reservation rotation policy to proceed. Also Watch: Bombay HC Grants Relief To Future Groups Sunil Biyani In Alleged 1,200 Crore GST Scam Case It is established with ample measure that the challenge made by the petitioners to Rule XII of the Rotation of Reservation Rules, 2025 has no foundation in law. Holding of elections for the Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis etc. is necessary for effectuating the objective of self-governance. The individuals right to franchise and right to contest the elections are not unfettered rights and are regulated under the statutory provisions, the bench noted in its detailed 55-page judgment, while dismissing the petitions. Mulund Metro Collapse: CM Devendra Fadnavis Announces 5 Lakh Aid, Orders Inquiry As Opposition Slams 'Negligence'

Mumbai: Expressing grief over the slab collapse, Devendra Fadnavis has announced Rs 5 lakh financial assistance for the kin of the deceased. He has also ordered an inquiry into the incident. CM Prays for Speedy Recovery, Govt to Bear Medical Costs The state government will bear the cost of medical treatment for the injured, Fadnavis said. The Chief Minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured, according to a statement released by the CMs office. Opposition parties have slammed the state government and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) over the accident. Expressing deep concern about public safety, Mumbai Congress chief and MP Prof. Varsha Gaikwad questioned the governments accountability. Has the life of Mumbaikars become so cheap? Does the government and the MMRDA administration have anything to say about this? she asked in a social media post. Gaikwad Slams 'PR-Focused' Managers Over Safety Lapses They are merely acting as infrastructure managers, focusing on PR and marketing. But what about the lives of Mumbaikars hanging in the balance? When the Metro project was underway, were safety rules only on paper? When work was being carried out on a busy road, why werent adequate safety measures put in place for traffic passing underneath? Gaikwad asked. . Thackeray further claimed that many ongoing infrastructure projects suffer from poor barricading, leading to traffic congestion and vehicles falling into open pits. Real Estate Reform Under Fire: Supreme Court Slams RERA For Delays, Says Law Favouring Builders Over Homebuyers

RERA was introduced on or about May 1, 2016, with 59 of its 92 sections, and became fully operational nationwide on May 1, 2017. The object of issuing or bringing out the RERA Act was to protect flat buyers from dishonest builders. The object clause of RERA is as under: To establish the Real Estate Regulatory Authority for regulation and promotion of the real estate sector and to ensure sale of plot, apartment or building, as the case may be, or sale of real estate project, in an efficient and transparent manner and to protect the interest of consumers in the real estate sector and to establish an adjudicating mechanism for speedy dispute redressal and also to establish the Appellate Tribunal to hear appeals from the decisions, directions or orders of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority and the adjudicating officer and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. Supreme Courts critical observations Recently, the Honble Supreme Court, on Thursday, the 12th day of February, in harsh words, took a critical view of the functioning of the RERA Court. Admittedly, RERA courts have failed to reduce litigation related to property matters. The Honble Supreme Court bench, consisting of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, stated that the intention of RERA was to protect flat purchasers, but the intention appears to help builders. There are ample instances of delay relating to RERA. In a few cases, the order has not been passed for more than 11 months since the date of pronouncing the order. The RERA Act stipulates that, as far as possible, the matter should be resolved within 60 days. However, the ground reality is that the matters go on and on in RERA courts and justice is not received in a number of cases for many years by flat purchasers. The aim of RERA was to provide timely justice to flat purchasers. The orders being passed by the RERA many times do not make a mention of expenses incurred by the flat purchasers, including GST, stamp duty, registration, and brokerage. This results in an unfair advantage to the builder. Conciliation and car parking issue The concept of conciliation as introduced by MAHARERA, in my opinion, is with a view to give more time to the builder to exploit the situation. It is further submitted that only in Maharashtra circulars are issued by RERA that builders can allot car parking space. I am of the view that this stand taken by the MAHARERA Authority is not correct. Car parking is a common amenity for which all the flat purchasers are entitled. There may be car parking spaces of different sizes, but that does not give any right to the builder to sell the same, as it is an open space meant for the benefit of all. There are a number of judgments of the High Court and Supreme Court on the above said subject. But as we all know, if there is the slightest loophole, the builders lobby exploits the same. Experience shows that the agreements are not drafted as per RERA laws or MOFA laws. Need for accountability and reform It is further submitted that, in spite of the country receiving independence in 1947 and more than seven decades having passed, yet a simple thing like getting conveyance of the property is not efficiently administered by our court for the simple reason that the law is full of loopholes. Now, how does one correct the loopholes? In my opinion, the first step that requires to be taken is to ensure that if the builder does not give timely possession of the flat and does not execute the conveyance within the stipulated time limit, immediately criminal cases should be filed by the department. I mean MOFA as well as RERA against the builder. A law should be introduced that 10% of the flats should be sold by the builder only after he executes the conveyance and puts all the flat purchasers in possession of the flat with an occupation certificate. This can put sufficient pressure on the builder. Simultaneously, whenever a proposal is being submitted by the builder, in each agreement one page should mention the details of the promoter, including the cases where he has failed to give the conveyance of the property as well as delay in giving possession. This would send the right signals to the flat purchaser before he books the flat. This detail should be uploaded on the departmental website of RERA. The observations being made by the bench of the Supreme Court, namely Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi, will go on to show that the RERA Act has failed to achieve its desired purpose. The abovesaid bench noted that they were extremely disappointed with the working of RERA and went on to say that RERA is only there to help builders. Also Watch: Supreme Court Observations On RERA Trigger Calls For Reforms As Experts Cite Delays And Gaps In Homebuyer Protection Another point that deserves to be looked into is that RERA in each state should be headed by a retired judge of the High Court and not by a bureaucrat. The limitations of bureaucrats are known to one and all. They have throughout their career tried their best to please the bureaucrats. It will not be surprising that the same mentality might continue. It is further submitted that the concept of accountability is widely ignored in RERA. One has reason to believe that intentionally, the legal team is not given importance and legal team staff is being appointed on a probation basis rather than on a permanent basis. ADV. VINOD C. His statments came as Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi and his government of misleading the country over tariff provisions in the India-US interim trade agreement, alleging that the deal would adversely impact India's cotton farmers and textile exporters. Gandhi said that while Indian garments face an 18 per cent tariff in the United States, Bangladesh is being given a zero per cent tariff benefit on garment exports on the condition that it imports American cotton. Questioning the policy framework, he alleged that importing American cotton would harm domestic farmers, while not importing it would harm the textile industry. He further claimed that Bangladesh was signalling a possible reduction or halt in cotton imports from India, which, he said, could worsen the situation for Indian producers. In a post on X, the Congress MP wrote, 18% Tariff vs 0% -- Let me explain how the expert liar Prime Minister and his cabinet are spreading confusion on this issue. And how they are cheating India's cotton farmers and textile exporters through the India-US trade deal. Bangladesh is being given 0% tariff benefit on garment exports to the US -- the only condition is that they import American cotton. After the announcement of 18% tariff on Indian garments, when I raised the question in Parliament about the special concession being given to Bangladesh, the reply from a minister of the Modi government was: If we also want the same benefit, we will have to import cotton from America. Why was this fact hidden from the country till now? He said that the agreement would push millions towards unemployment and economic distress
