Give us autonomy, dont push TN to revive separate state demand: DMKs A Raja

Politics The MP was speaking in a meeting for local body representatives held in Namakkal, where he spoke about the revival of demand for separate nation. TNM Staff File Photo | Facebook/A Raja Do not push us to demand for a separate nation, DMK MP A Raja said to the Union government, while speaking in a meeting held at Namakkal, on Sunday, July 3. Demand for a separate nation - Dravida Nadu - was a long standing demand of the party supremos Periyar and Anna. However, it was dropped in 1962 after secession was deemed illegal by the then Jawaharlal Nehru-led government. While the demand for federalism has been put forth frequently by the DMK party, it is this meeting that has stirred up the Dravida Nadu topic again. Raja was speaking in a meeting held for DMK local body representatives in Namakkal titled Mathiyil Kootatchi, Maanilathil Suyatchi (roughly meaning federalism at the Centre, and autonomy for states). This was the idea of former CM M Karunanidhi, which has stuck with the party till date. Raja recalled the history behind the emergence of the concept and traced its way back to the split of Pakistan. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that Hindi should be the only common language in India and Hindi is needed to unite the country. Will a language unite the country?, he asked. Soon after Pakistan was born, the nations father Jinnah went to Dacca - in East Pakistan - and was speaking in Urdu, when a young boy stood up and said they knew Bangla, and not Urdu. Despite this, he continued to speak in Urdu that led to the split of Pakistan, he points out. The MP further said that naming India as a Union of States was a difficult task for Dr BR Ambedkar, because the then ruling Congress was not willing to even accept the phrase. He also quoted Ambedkars statement that the word Bharatham was inculcated into the Constitution by force, without my willing. Pointing out that the Constitution provides three lists of powers - Union, state and concurrent, Raja says that the Union government has the most powers. When Kalaignar wanted to install a statue of King Raja Raja Cholan in Thanjavur temple, he couldnt do that because the temple was under the control of archeology, which was controlled by the Union government, he says and adds that while initially the demand of Dravida Naadu was put forth, the then CM Anna had to drop it in 1962 due to the law brought in to curb the demand for secession. Speaking about it in parliament Anna said that he knew it was brought to control the demand of Tamil Nadu and added, It is a painful backlash to bring a law to curtail our rights, not in an antagonist manner but protagonist manner, he recalls. Further stating that states dont even have small rights, even after talking and writing so much about it, he sought the Prime Minister and the Home Minister not to force to start demanding a separate state. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi says all states are to be seen the same, and the Home Minister Amit Shah says if you want unity, learn Hindi. The partys founding father Periyar, till death, demanded for a separate state. But we (DMK) kept aside that demand for our democracy and national integrity. So, I am saying this with the utmost humility possible. Our CM is traveling in Annas path so far, do not push us into following Periyars path. Do not make us revive our demand for a separate state. Give us state autonomy, he said. Further, according to reports, the Chief Minister MK Stalin, speaking at the meeting had warned the elected local body representatives that they will surely face severe repercussions, if they do anything that might disrepute the DMK government or the CM.

Ireland Announces Squad For Tri-Series Against Australia & Pakistan, Laura Delany To Lead The Side

Ireland Women on Sunday announced a 14-player squad for the home tri-series against Australia and Pakistan, with captain Laura Delany returning to lead the side again. Laura had missed their previous series against South Africa after failing to recover from an injury. Along with her, opening bowler Orla Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell, both were injured as well and have now made it back to the team. Ava Canning and Amy Hunter, who missed the previous series due to exam commitments, also return. We were pleased to see numerous strong performances during the recent South Africa series and, combined with the return of several players to the player pool after exams or injury, it has certainly made for several tough decisions on selection, said Carrie Archer, Chair of National Women's Selectors. However, these selection challenges only serve to underscore the positive fact that we are on the right track in the development of an increased talent pool to choose from in Ireland. Indeed, several players who missed out on this squad can consider themselves unfortunate, but certainly not out of contention for further opportunities, particularly in the lead up to T20 World Cup Qualifier in September. We have a lot to play for and a lot of players to see, especially with so many Super Series games ahead, as well as further internationals ahead of the tournament, she added. The T20I tri-series will be played in Bready from July 16 to 24, with Ireland facing Australia in their first match on the 17. Also Read: Scorecard Squad: Laura Delany (c), Ava Canning, Rachel Delaney, Georgina Dempsey, Amy Hunter, Shauna Kavanagh, Arlene Kelly, Gaby Lewis, Sophie MacMahon, Jane Maguire, Cara Murray, Leah Paul, Orla Prendergast, Rebecca Stokell

Iranian negotiator finalises new round of nuclear talks

TEHRAN: Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani announced that the date and place of a fresh round of negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal are being finalized, according to the official Islamic Republic News. Bagheri Kani stated on Sunday that the time and venue of next negotiations are being finalised in the exchanges between Iran and the European Union, adding that the conversations in Doha took place within a pre-determined framework. He did not specify whether the next round of negotiations will be held directly between Iran and the US or in the format of Iran and the P4+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, plus Germany). With the help of EU coordinator Enrique Mora, Iran and the US held covert discussions on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Qatari city of Doha to discuss their disagreements regarding the resurrection of the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). Despite the failure of the Doha negotiations to produce results, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian characterised them as good. Iran and the major world powers agreed to the JCPOA in July 2015, with Iran agreeing to limit its nuclear programme in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. However, former US President Donald Trump withdrew Washington from the pact in May 2018 and reinstituted unilateral sanctions against Iran, which led the latter to renege on some of its pact obligations. The Vienna nuclear negotiations with Iran got underway in April 2021, but they were put on hold in March of this year because to political tensions between Tehran and Washington. Kanhaiyalal's killer was about to join BJP, shocking revelations in investigation

Udaipur: The murder of tailor Kanhaiyalal of Udaipurwas carried out in a very planned manner. It was only when Pakistani handlers Salman Haider and Abu Ibrahim spoke that Mohammad Riaz Attari became an activist of the BJP Minority Morcha so that he could get inside information. The source in the probe agency said that Mohammad Riaz Attari had been trying to reach out to senior leaders of the party through the BJP's minority front for 3 years. Salman had asked him to go to BJP meetings and send information from there. The plan was that by joining the BJP, Riyaz would win the trust of the big leaders and then do a big scandal, which would create an uproar in the country. According to reports received from investigating agencies, Riyaz had also linked a lot of people around him to the party to win the trust of BJP Minority Morcha leaders. He was doing all this on the instructions he had received from his Pakistani handler Salman. But it was not getting much success, as the BJP did not invite minority front leaders to big meetings. Was there any preparation for an attack on a senior BJP leader? Now, the agencies are investigating it also. Nasir Hussain Wants 'Gifted Lad' Crawley To Utilize His Ability Of Making Runs

Former England captain Nasser Hussain is hoping that opener Zak Crawley, whom he referred to as a gifted lad, must make the most of his abilities after the youngster endured yet another failure in the first innings of the rescheduled fifth Test against India on Saturday. After lunch, Crawley went for a loose drive on a full-length ball pitched outside the off-stump from India skipper Jasprit Bumrah and was caught safely by Shubman Gill at third slip, falling for nine. Crawley falling cheaply extended his lean run from England's 3-0 sweep of New Zealand, where he got scores of 43, 9, 4, 0, 6 and 25. You can't go back to the 90s where England kept chopping and changing. People feel more comfortable if they have the backing and have been given a long run but your only currency runs and he keeps getting out the same way. I think he is a real test of the McCullum and Stokes brand of cricket, said Hussain during the interruption caused by rain on Sky Sports broadcast in England. Crawley is in charge of his own career and you don't want to be that gifted lad that played some lovely shots, you want to be the gifted lad that made the most of your ability. Bairstow, for example, has been positive in his last three innings but not reckless, while there is a difference between opening and batting at No 5 in England. You would hope there is a little more in this coaching regime, where they say 'the percentages were against you today', added Hussain. With Crawley's lean run extending, former England skipper Michael Atherton agreed with Hussain's views. The captain and coach have to back their players but the question is for how long? Eventually, the currency runs. Crawley's dismissal today was more about length than line. I would say the ball today was not necessarily a driveable length when the ball is moving, it is a defend or leave length. But England want players to take the game on. Stokes has made a clarion call to county cricketers saying they have to play this way to get into the team, he said. Cricket analytics company Cricviz pointed out that outside the off-stump channel is becoming a pocket of weakness for Crawley. This is the fourth time Zak Crawley has been caught in the channel outside off-stump this summer -- he now averages just under 18 when facing deliveries in the off-stump channel as a Test opener, read their tweet. Asked if Crawley should rein in his attacking instincts as an opener, Atherton remarked, This may be an old-fashioned view. But, in the times, when conditions are not in your favour, I think you have to find a way of getting through it, to then get to a point where conditions are in your favour. That is what Crawley is struggling to do. If you think of his magnificent double hundred against Pakistan in 2020 - which I am not taking anything away from at all -- it was made on a beautiful batting pitch. He played brilliantly and I don't think you can play like that and not be a player but you are not always going to have beautiful batting pitches. Also Read: Scorecard India are currently in a position of ascendancy in the match as the rain stopped proceedings, with England at 31/2 in 6.3 overs, with Bumrah taking out the opening pair of Crawley and Alex Lees on either side of a long lunch break.

Delhi court denies bail to Zubair, sends him to 14-day judicial custody

Court Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for Zubair, told the court that the tweet was made using Zubairs current mobile device and there was no need for seizure of his laptop. Aditi Kumar After spending four days in police custody, Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of digital fact-checking website Alt News, was denied bail in the 2018 tweet case by the Patiala House court on Saturday, July 2. The four-day police custody of Zubair ended on Saturday, and the Delhi Police sought further custody of Zubair for 14 days. The Patiala House Court had granted his custody after the Delhi Police alleged that he had not been cooperating during the investigation and that devices he had used for tweeting had to be recovered. Zubair had tweeted an image from a movie, however an anonymous Twitter account claimed that sentiments of Hindus had been hurt, based on which the Delhi police arrested him. The Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) told the court that, as per their findings, Zubair had allegedly accepted donations from foreign countries including from Pakistan and Syria and this required further investigation. Zubair has categorically denied this. Asking for further custody, the SPP informed the court that new provisions including 120B of the IPC (Criminal Conspiracy) and Section 35 of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act,(FCRA) which refers to punishment for accepting foreign contribution or any currency or security from a foreign source, have been charged against Zubair. The SPP contended that Zubair was using a different sim card when he came in for questioning to the special cell office, but changed it later after questioning. Alleging that Zubair was being clever, the SPP sought his further custody. Zubair's arrest has been condemned by media organisations, rights activists and others. An investigation by The Wire showed that an anonymous account with links to the BJP's Yuva Morcha had claimed that Hindu sentiments had been hurt by the tweet. Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for Zubair, told the court that the tweet was made using Zubairs current mobile device and there was no need for seizure of his laptop. She further argued that his phone was stolen in 2021, and he had filed a police complaint then too. Alleging that the entire process was meant to harass Zubair, Grover questioned the updates being given to the media about the case by Delhi Police. She also asked if losing a mobile phone or being clever was a crime in the country. Grover also questioned the accusation that Zubairs 2018 tweet hurt sentiments and told the court that it was an image of a film with no reference to any religion or religious group. She also argued that there was nothing inciteful towards any deity in the tweet. She said that there is no scope to charge Zubair under sections 153A (promoting religious enmity) and 295A (Deliberate and malicious acts to outrage feelings by insulting religion). She also told the court that it was misled to think that Zubair personally received foreign contributions, and that the funds were transferred to the official Alt News bank account. [The money] hasnt gone into my account. I am making a categorical statement, Grover said on Zubairs behalf. The SPP argued against granting bail to Zubair, alleging that various materials from his phone had been deleted after he had been taken in for questioning the first time. The police also argued that since the 2018 tweet in question has not been deleted from social media, it is a continuous offence. Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets, and was sent to one-day police custody by the trial court on the same day. After being produced on the expiry of his one-day custodial interrogation, his custody was extended by another four days by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria. Earlier this month, a case against Zubair was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language, etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police said the case was registered on the complaint of a Twitter user who accused him of hurting religious sentiments. While seeking an extension of Zubair's custody by five days, the police had earlier told the trial court that the accused was allegedly following a trend where he used religious tweets in an effort to get famous, and that there was a deliberate effort to create social disharmony and hurt religious feelings. The investigating agency had also said that the accused joined the probe but did not cooperate and various materials from his phone were deleted. Advocate Vrinda Grover had opposed the police plea alleging that the agency had called Zubair for questioning in some other case but he was arrested in the present case in haste. Zubair's counsel had also said that the photo which the accused used in the tweets is from an old Hindi film from 1983 by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Kissi Se Na Kehna, and that the film was not banned. The trial court had, however, rejected the submission saying it was of no assistance to the accused at this stage. Considering that the mobile phone/laptop of accused used by him for posting the tweet in question is to be recovered at the instance of accused Mohammed Zubair from his Bangalore residence and that accused has remained non-cooperative and the disclosure statement on record, four days PC (police custody) remand of accused is granted since accused is to be taken to Bangalore, the trial court had said in a 3-page order. In the last eight years, Zubair and his organisation has not only debunked routine misinformation but also published investigations that showed the link between fake news sites and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). But his towering online presence, where he has over half a million followers on Twitter, belies his unassuming offline persona in which he gave up the comfortable life of a telecoms engineer in Bengaluru to draw attention to the volume of misinformation in the Indian media, which, he quickly realised, was frequently in the form of hate speech targeting religious minorities. The eldest among five siblings, Zubair, 40, grew up in Bengalurus JC Nagar area. His father sold mangoes to traders at the local marketplace to support their family. He (Zubairs father) always told Zubair, You are like the train engine of the family. You have to focus on your studies and set a good example for your siblings, Zubairs cousin tells TNM. Zubair largely stuck to his fathers advice, becoming the first one in his family to get a bachelors degree, graduating from the reputed MS Ramaiah Engineering College in Bengaluru. It may surprise people today but he had no interest in politics when he was growing up. He had no idea who our local MLA was, says a close friend of Zubairs. He used to spend all his free time playing cricket in the neighborhood. He was the person in our group who used to call each and every friend to the ground to play, the friend recalls. After completing his studies, Zubair worked as a telecoms engineer at reputed companies like Airtel and Cisco in Bengaluru. His longest stint was with Nokia, where he worked for nearly a decade. I remember he had gone to Finland and Japan for on-site assignments. He loved his tech job and he was leading the typical Bangalore techie life, his friend says. Beginnings of fact-checking It was in the run-up to the 2014 general elections that Zubair, an avid social media user, first noticed the slew of political pages criticising the then incumbent UPA government on Facebook. In June the same year, he decided to create a page of his own, tongue-in-cheek, on behalf of Subramanian Swamy, a BJP politician whose tweets had a huge audience. Did you know Mona Lisa was an Indian? Zubair satirically wrote on the page posting an image of the famous painting edited to include a sari and bindi. When he was threatened by a legal notice by the politician himself, Zubair merely added the affix unofficial and continued posting, quickly amassing over three-and-a-half lakh followers. It was in this period that he came in contact with Pratik Sinha, an Ahmedabad-based software engineer who ran another popular Facebook page and website called Truth of Gujarat. Zubairs fate was intertwined with that of Pratik Sinha and his mother Nirjhari Sinha, who are the other co-founders of Alt News. Nirjhari and her husband Mukul worked as scientists but they were also human rights activists based in Ahmedabad, the city where Pratik grew up. Mukul Sinha lost his job after he became involved in organising workers fighting for their rights at his workplace, the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad. He subsequently trained as a lawyer and went on to represent victims of the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002. He took on the Narendra Modi government through sustained cross-examination in the Nanavati-Shah Commission which investigated the Godhra train carnage, riots and alleged fake encounters that followed. Pratik, however, was working as a software engineer in the United States, and only in 2013, when Mukul was diagnosed with cancer that Pratik, then 31, returned to Ahmedabad and stayed back. He learnt about the dangers of misinformation from his parents, examining their work representing the victims of the 2002 riots in detail and publishing them on Truth of Gujarat. How Alt News happened When Pratik first reached out to Zubair, it was to rebuke him for picking up a story from the Truth of Gujarat page without attribution, recalls Nirjhari Sinha, who is now the director of Pravda Media Foundation, the parent company of Alt News. But soon, they realised how much they had in common, says Nirjhari. They were both software engineers who maintained popular social media pages while working a full-time job. They were both eager to hold people accountable and equally worried about the amount of misinformation and hate passing off as news online. In 2016, Zubair traveled to Ahmedabad for work and met the Sinhas, where a conversation that first outlined the idea to start Alt News took place. We set out to start a fact-checking initiative at a time when such websites did not exist in the Indian media space, says Nirjhari. Pratik was convinced he would leave his software job after attending the Chalo Una rally along with his mother when hundreds of protesters walked from Ahmedabad to Una, a distance of over 300 kilometres, agitating against the public flogging of four Dalit cattle skinners by vigilantes. Sinha documented the march and his updates #ChaloUna became popular and trended online, drawing attention to the issue which he felt was ignored by the media. Although Zubair was yet to join full-time due to family constraints, the Alt News website was launched in February 2017 with the first story debunking a GIF that showed Donald Trump holding up a folder that read Vote for BJP. Zubair would join Alt News full-time in September 2018, managing fact-checking assignments as well as drawing attention to misinformation using his growing social media presence. Alt News backs up its fact-check stories with meticulous evidence. For instance, a reverse-image search was all it took them to show that images of a 2015 heatwave were being falsely shared as the victims of the Balakot airstrike. But Zubair and the Sinhas quickly realised that misinformation was not always routine; that there were recurring patterns in the news they were debunking. A significant number of their fact-checks were about hate-speech targeting minorities. We knew when we began that fake news was not only targeting political leaders but that a lot of it was actually hate speech. We realised there were many unrelated videos shared without context which targeted minorities. For example, a video of someone saying Pakistan Zindabad was shared without context. The video may have been from Karachi or Bangladesh but it was presented to be from India, says Nirjhari. Alongside relentlessly fact-checking misinformation, Alt News also investigated the people behind popular websites. The problems began when he moved beyond routine fact-checking and found fake news sites that are linked to the ruling party, Nirjhari says. In May 2017, Alt News published a story uncovering the links between a popular news site and the BJP IT cell. The funding to pay the salaries of their staff largely came from donations they raised on their website and social media. Alt News grew in popularity over the last five years, relentlessly debunking misinformation like home remedies in the time of COVID-19 as well as publishing investigations exposing popular fake news websites. Getting on the BJPs radar Their work, often combative and asking probing questions, prompted scrutiny, mainly from BJP leaders. Zubair was also the subject of two cases accusing him of harassment and torture of a minor. This happened after he responded to an abusive tweet with the display picture of the user which featured a girl, perhaps his grandaughter. He had shared a blurred picture of the girl while responding to online abuse, and asked, Does your cute grand daughter know about your part time job of abusing people on social media? I suggest you to change your profile pic. A few months later, Zubairs name was included in a morbid video calling for the deaths of several journalists. This video was also shared by BJP leaders. In June this year, Zubair was booked for calling Hindutva leaders Bajrang Muni and Yati Narsinghanand hate mongers. Yati Narsinghanand was earlier booked for hate speech at an event in Delhi. There was also an online campaign to arrest Zubair when a Twitter account called The Hawk Eye flagged Zubairs satirical post from 2018 asking police to take action for making fun of gods, religion, culture and scriptures. The campaign against Zubair intensified following the suspension of BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma after her derogatory comments against Prophet Muhammad were highlighted by Zubair. Arun Pudur, who describes himself as a tech billionaire, even offered money for anyone willing to start legal action against Zubair and Alt News. Zubair had debunked his false claims made by the businessman against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. These online campaigns foreshadowed Zubairs eventual arrest by the Delhi police on June 27. We expected this. His (Zubairs) work exposed many lies and this is what the (Union) government is against. They wanted a lie to remain a lie, says Nirjhari. The co-founders are now supporting Zubair, who has been in police custody for four days now. They are also challenging the police for seizing Zubairs laptop and hard-disk during the investigation. The tweet is online and it was made from his previous phone. The police picking up his laptop and current phone is facilitating a phishing and roving enquiry against him, says Nirjhari. We should make use of their talents to strengthen democracy and not weaken democracy by targeting him.

Samyukta Kisan Morcha becomes active, can take this big step against the govt

New Delhi: The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) was in a way silent after the long agitation against the farm laws, withdrawal of new farm laws, and assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. But now again SKM is engaged in intensifying its activities. SKM is preparing for another agitation over issues related to farmers. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha has convened a meeting in Ghaziabad on July 3 to discuss what will be the contours of the agitation in the coming time. The meeting will be attended by senior leaders belonging to the Morcha. The leaders of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha will brainstorm on how to take up the problems related to the farmers with the government in the coming time and get them resolved. Let us know that after the end of the agitation that lasted for more than a year in December, the activities of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha have stopped almost. After the withdrawal of the new laws after the agitation of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, it was also said by the government that a guaranteed minimum support price (MSP) would also be considered. In fact, it was also said by the government that the committee that would be set up to ensure the MSP guarantee would also include representatives of farmers' organisations. Since then, the government has not taken any special steps in this direction. In the Ghaziabad meeting, the office bearers of the SKM can now discuss the strategy of the movement over MSP. ENG vs IND 5th Test: Players Wear Blue Caps As Edgbaston Turns 'Blue For Bob' In Fight Against Prostate Cancer

The Edgbaston Stadium on Saturday will be turning 'Blue for Bob' to raise funds and support the Bob Willis Fund in its fight against prostate cancer on day two of the rescheduled fifth Test between England and India. The initiative will be the second time since it first happened in 2021 during an ODI between England and Pakistan, in memory of former England fast bowler Bob Willis, who died in December 2019 due to prostate cancer at the age of 70, three years after he was diagnosed with the disease. The Bob Willis Fund was then co-founded by his wife Lauren Clark and brother David in Bob's name to help fund studies into prostrate cancer, raise awareness about the illness and find earlier and better diagnoses. Spectators attending the day's play on Saturday have been encouraged to wear blue to support the cause. The fund has raised more than 500,000 pounds since it was launched in 2021. Today we're turning Edgbaston #BlueForBob supporting the @BobWillisFund. If you're attending, please wear blue and show your support, tweeted Edgbaston from their official Twitter account. Edgbaston was Willis' home ground during his time with county side Warwickshire between 1972 and 1984, including winning the County Championship in his very first season with the club. Willis took 325 wickets in 90 Tests for England, at an average of 25.20, with his most memorable spell coming in the Ashes Test at Headingley in July 1981 when he bagged 8/43 to win the game for England. Coming to the match, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant played one of the best knocks by an Indian Test batter in overseas conditions, a marvellous 146, as he and Ravindra Jadeja (83 not out) combined for a magnificent counterattack to propel India to 338/7 in 73 overs on day one of the match. Also Read: Scorecard At 98/5, India were in all sorts of trouble, staring at a total that would have been way less than what they expected. But Pant and Jadeja shared a counter-attacking stand of 222 runs off 239 balls, with Pant producing a knock that will be remembered for long while Jadeja played the second foil to perfection.

Holland Included In Australian Squad After Ashton Agar Ruled Out Against Sri Lanka

Australian left-arm spinner Ashton Agar will not be a part of the side for the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium from July 8 after the 28-year-old failed to recover from a side injury. Left-arm spinner Jon Holland has been drafted into the Australia squad for the Test, while Agar will take the flight back home. Bad luck continued to dog Agar on the Sri Lanka tour after the spinner did not play a single match on Australia's tour of Pakistan in March-April this year after contracting Covid-19 during the white-ball leg. He looked a certainty in the Playing XI for the opening Test against Sri Lanka alongside senior spinner Nathan Lyon but the injury ensured Mitchell Swepson got his place for the match, which the tourists won by 10-wicket. While Swepson will still be the front-runner to pair Lyon in the second Test after he took five wickets in the opening game, the fact that he went for close to four-and-a-half runs per over, had given Holland a ray of hope. But with Test skipper Pat Cummins backing Swepson, it remains to be seen which of the two gets the nod for the match. Really happy with Swepo (Swepson). A couple of key breakthroughs in the first innings and then today, top-order wickets, Cummins was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au after Australia completed Sri Lanka's decimation within three days. Really valuable, I thought he controlled the tempo of the game, he had some batters come really hard at him. I thought he bowled beautifully. Also Read: Scorecard Given the pitches in Sri Lanka, Australia could be tempted to play three spinners, in which case Lyon, Swepson and Holland could be in the playing XI to pair with just one specialist pace bowler.

The real-life story of Nambi Narayanan, the scientist Madhavan plays in Rocketry

ISRO spy case The 80-year-old former ISRO scientist is still awaiting justice, as the case against 18 police officers accused of fabricating the case against him in 1994 is pending in court. Azeefa Fathima On October 20, 1994, a Maldivian woman named Mariam Rasheeda was taken into custody by the Special Branch of Police in Kerala. Her arrest soon snowballed into a massive espionage related scandal, with seven persons, including former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, accused of being part of a spy racket. Actor R Madhavans directorial debut Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, which released on July 1, is a biographical drama that traces the life of Nambi Narayanan, an aerospace engineer who was working with ISRO and the main accused in the alleged espionage case. Nambi, along with the others, was acquitted in May 1996 by a CBI court. However, it was not until 2018 that he was able to take a break from years of legal battle, because soon after the acquittal the Kerala government had ordered a re-investigation. This was challenged by the scientist, and the case dragged on for another couple of years until the Supreme Court quashed the state governments move. Timeline of the 27-year legal battle The bizarre espionage case began with the arrest of Mariam Rasheeda in October 1994 for overstaying her visa. She and her friend Fauziya Hassan, who were staying in Hotel Samrat in Thiruvananthapuram, were asked by Special Branch Inspector S Vijayan to appear before him. When the duo went to the police station, Vijayan detained Mariam alleging that she did not have a proper reason to stay in India despite her visa expiring. Mariam, however, said she was here for medical treatment? and to help Fauziya get school admission for her daughter. Saying that she could not return as flights to the Maldives were suspended because of a plague scare, Mariam approached the police seeking permission to stay in India. That was when her passport was confiscated. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing also joined the case, and Mariam was arrested on October 20. Mariam later alleged that Vijayan had made sexual advances which she turned down and said she had warned him that she would report him to another senior police official, Raman Srivastava. On November 13, Fauziya was also arrested and the case was taken over by the Special Investigation Team headed by then Kerala DIG Siby Mathews. Both the Kerala Police and the IB claimed that Mariam confessed that confidential documents of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had been leaked by its scientists. They alleged that the two Maldivian nationals had made telephone calls from their hotel room to D Sasikumaran, who was the general manager of the Proto Fabrication and Technology Division of ISROs Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). Sasikumaran was arrested on November 21. Nambi was leading ISROs cryogenic engine project and Sasikumaran was his deputy. Nambi was also arrested soon after, on November 30. After the arrests, the special team of the Kerala Police, saying that it was not equipped to handle the case, requested that it be transferred to the CBI. The Central team took up the case in December 1994. The allegation by the Kerala Police was that Nambi and Sasikumaran fell into a honey trap set by the Maldivian women and subsequently gave them multiple documents that were deemed national secret. The documents included ISROs Vikas engine drawings, details about the cryogenic engine technology developed by India, among others. The story does not end there; the police also alleged that this data was passed on to a Pakistani nuclear scientist, who then paid the ISRO scientists lakhs of US dollars. Multiple arrests, story woven wider Apart from these four arrests, the Indian representative of Russian space agency Glavkosmos, K Chandrasekhar, and a labour contractor named SK Sharma were also arrested. They were booked under the Official Secrets Act. The arrests were only part of the story. Using the scam, politicians and media in Kerala targeted several people, including then Chief Minister K Karunakaran and then Southern Range IG Raman Srivastava. It is to be noted that Mariam first met Srivastava about the extension of her visa. There were many demands for Srivatsavas arrest after the Maldivian women allegedly told the investigators that a coatwallah was part of the conspiracy. However, Srivatsava was never implicated in the case. He was close to Chief Minister Karunakaran and his brother was an IG working in then Prime Minister Narasimha Raos office. The political pressure increased to such an extent that Karunakaran stepped down as CM. After close to two months in jail, Nambi was granted bail in January 1995. The case went on for 16 more months until May 1996, when a CBI court acquitted all six accused in the case. The CBI, after its 18-month investigation, submitted a 104-page-long final report that found that the entire case was false and fabricated with no iota of evidence to back any of the allegations put forth. There was a time in the 1990s when the PSLV rocket was a huge success and ISRO was looking to develop the GSLV a more powerful rocket that could carry heavier satellites and go deeper into space. However, it needed a cryogenic engine for power. For this cryogenic technology, India had signed a deal with a Russian agency, which was opposed by the US, and India planned to develop the technology indigenously. Nambi believes that he was arrested as part of a US-backed conspiracy to destroy Indias development of the cryogenic engine. As for Raman Srivatsava, it was later alleged that Siby Mathews who headed the investigation had a strained relationship with him, and that is why Srivatsava was implicated in the scandal. However, this was not the end of the road because months after the CBI courts acquittal, the CPI(M)-led Kerala government reopened the case and ordered further investigation, which was challenged by Nambi. The governments case was quashed by the Supreme Court in March 1998. In 1999, Nambi sought compensation and action against those who fabricated the case. But no such action was taken in all these years. However, in September 2012, the Kerala HC directed the state government to pay him a compensation of Rs 10 lakh. Subsequently, in September 2018, the apex court awarded him Rs 50 lakh as compensation saying that he was subjected to harassment and mental cruelty. The Supreme Court also constituted a committee headed by Justice DK Jain and ordered a probe into the role played by the Kerala police in falsely implicating Nambi and others in the case. This committee submitted its report in April 2021 saying that the entire case was part of a conspiracy and also recommended a detailed investigation. Based on this recommendation, the SC ordered a CBI re-investigation and an FIR was registered against 18 former officers of the Kerala police and IB in June 2021. However, the case is still pending in court. At this juncture, we also should take note of a simultaneous media trial held, right from the arrest of the two Maldivians till this point. Apart from a few media houses, like Asianet News, that called out the polices actions from the beginning and faced a defamation suit as a result, other media houses published sensational claims. The entire case, which was sensationalised as a scandal revolving around sex, money and espionage, started with a three-centimetre-long news copy in the Communist partys official newspaper Deshabhimani on Mariams arrest for overstaying her visa. Later, the news was picked up by another newspaper Mangalam, with police sources connecting Mariam with several businessmen and scientists, thereby creating a buzz around the issue. While Nambi was initially vilified by the media, he was later characterised as a victim of vendetta, politics and lack of media ethics. An investigation by The Caravan magazine in 2018, however, pointed out that the CBI had hastily shut the case as Narasimha Raos son Prabhakar Raos name had been dragged in. The magazine went on to ask if the CBI was acting on orders of the PMs office and why it had ignored the fact that Nambi had applied for voluntary retirement a few days after Mariams arrest. For Nambi himself, the fight has not stopped as all those officers who investigated the case remain unpunished. Watch: How ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan was exonerated in the ISRO spy case

Bollywood actress and former Miss Universe Sushmita Sen says that people who came into her life were disappointed, due to which she is still a virgin at the age of 46. But do you know that ever since she appeared in films, her name has been associated with 11 people till now? Interestingly, 6 of these have been younger than the actress by 15 years, while 5 have been more than 16 years of age. Sushmita Sen's name has been associated with businessman Anil Ambani, who is about 16 years older than her. It is said that when Sushmita started going to events after becoming Miss Universe, then her eyes collided with Anil Ambani at an event. Reportedly, Anil Ambani also gifted the actress a 22-carat diamond ring. But it is said that later Ambani distanced himself from Sushmita at the behest of the family. Sushmita Sen's name has been associated with film director Vikram Bhatt. The story of Sushmita's debut film 'Dastak' was written by Vikram Bhatt. During this film, Sushmita fell in love with Vikram who was almost 7 years older than her, and married. Vikram Bhatt had to face many problems due to an extramarital affair. However, before the situation went from bad to worse, Vikram parted ways with Sushmita. Sushmita's name has been associated with actor Randeep Hooda, who is about a year younger than her. Both had dated each other for about three years. But after the breakup, Randeep used very bitter words for Sushmita. He said in a conversation, I was not in a relationship with Miss Universe nor did I feel any sense of victory. I have only missed theater rehearsals in my life because Sushmita wanted me not to be there. And that's the worst thing I did in my value system. Randeep had described the breakup with Sushmita as the best thing in his life. Sushmita Sen's affair has been with director Mudassar Aziz, who is about 8 years younger in age. The two came close during the film 'Dulha Mil Gaya'. However, they had a breakup after some time. In a conversation after the breakup, Mudassar praised Sushmita and said, She is a very nice person and I respect whatever decision she has taken in her life. She lives her life on her own terms. Most people can't do that. Sushmita Sen's name has been associated with Shabbir Bhatia, the founder of Hotmail. Shabbir is almost 7 years elder than Sushmita in age. It was even reported in the news that Shabbir had also given a 10.5-carat diamond to Sushmita. However, the relationship was never confirmed from either Sushmita's or Shabbir's side. Sushmita had a long affair with hotel owner Sanjay Narang. About her relationship with Narang, who is almost 8 years older than her, Sushmita wrote in a social media post, When he tells you the most beautiful things and really means them. It's one thing to be in love and one thing to be in love. It is said that both were about to get married. However, this could not happen and they parted ways. Sushmita Sen was 36 when she was in a relationship with businessman Imtiaz Khatri, 14 years younger than her. There was a lot of discussion about their affair in the media. However, Sushmita never commented on this and Imtiaz kept calling her his good friend. Sushmita Sen's affair has been with Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram. It is said that Sushmita had fallen in love with Wasim, in 2013. Said it was even going to be known that they were about to get married. However, in a conversation, Sushmita had rubbished the news of the affair. Sushmita had said that whenever she falls in love, she herself will tell people. On the other hand, Wasim Akram had also termed the news as baseless and said that he was fed up with such rumors. Sushmita Sen's name has been associated with celebrity manager Bunty Sajdeh, almost two years younger than her. This was when Bunty was Sushmita's manager. However, Sushmita dismissed the news of her relationship with Bunty as a rumor and laughed it off. Sushmita's name has been associated with restaurant owner Hrithik Bhasin. Sushmita's affair with Hrithik, who was about 2 years younger at the age, lasted for about 4 years. The two were seen together at the wedding reception of Zaheer Khan and Sagarika Ghatge. Though they later broke up, they are still good friends. Sushmita Sen's previous affair was with Noida-based model Rohman Shawl. Rohman is 15 years younger than Sushmita in age. The two came close to each other in 2018 and broke up in 2021.

Stokes, Root & Bairstow Return As England Announce Squads For ODIs Against India

England's Test skipper Ben Stokes, batter Joe Root and wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow on Friday marked a return to England's ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against India, said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The trio, though, won't be a part of the three-match T20I series which begins just two days after the end of the ongoing rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston. In the T20I squad, uncapped seamer Richard Gleeson had earned his first call-up to the England set-up. The T20I and ODI series against India will also mark the start of England's life under the captaincy of new white-ball skipper Jos Buttler after Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket earlier this week. Gleeson, who plays for Lancashire, just like Buttler, is currently the second-leading wicket-taker in the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast, picking 20 wickets in 12 matches at an economy rate of 8.05. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid has been permitted by the ECB to miss the white-ball series against India to make The Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Stokes, one of the key members of England's 2019 ODI World Cup-winning side, has not featured in the format since he stood in as captain for the 3-0 sweep of Pakistan last July before he took a break from the game to take care of his mental well-being. From the squad which who 3-0 against the Netherlands earlier this month, Luke Wood and David Payne have been left out while Root's return to ODIs causes the omission of Dawid Malan. England will play the first T20I against India on July 7 at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton, followed by back-to-back matches at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge on July 9 and 10 respectively. The ODIs begin from July 12 at The Oval before moving to the Lord's and Old Trafford on July 14 and 17 respectively. England T20I squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Richard Gleeson, Chris Jordan, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Tymal Mills, Matthew Parkinson, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Reece Topley and David Willey Also Read: Scorecard England ODI squad: Jos Buttler (captain), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Craig Overton, Matthew Parkinson, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Phil Salt, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley and David Willey

21-Year Old Tuba Hassan Earns PCB's Central Contract

Promising 21-year-old leg-spinner Tuba Hassan was one of the three first-time women cricketers who were awarded central contracts for the 2022-23 season, which came into effect on Friday. The other two first-timers are Gul Feroza and Sadaf Shamas, who have been identified as future prospects. Tuba was adjudged ICC Women's Player of the Month for May 2022 for her impressive debut series against Sri Lanka. She took five wickets in three T20Is, including three for eight in her debut match. Tuba was part of the Pakistan women's team for the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022 as a travelling reserve. I am absolutely thrilled and excited at being given the prestigious central contract for the first time. Hard work has slowly started to pay off, but this is just the beginning. My focus remains on producing strong performances and contributing in my team's success, rest I am sure will take care of itself as we have seen in this case, Tuba Hassan said. I want to thank all my seniors, teammates, support staff and family members who have backed me in this journey to date. Playing and performing for Pakistan and my team remains my only objective, and with the support of a strong group of people around me, I remain confident that I will improve and live up to their expectations. Apart from the three first-timers, Ghulam Fatima, Iram Javed and Sidra Amin have regained their central contracts, which see a 15 per cent increase in retainers across all categories. Ghulam Fatima had last earned a contract for the 2018-19 season, Iram was last awarded a contract in 2016-17 and Sidra Amin was last given a contract in the 2019-20 season. The six players who have failed to retain contracts include Kaynat Hafeez, Nahida Khan, Najiha Alvi, Rameen Shamim, Saba Nazir and Syeda Aroob Shah. As many as eight star performers have been promoted in the Women's Central Contracts 2022-23. Aliya Riaz and Nida Dar have been promoted to Category A where they join national team captain Bismah Maroof. Anam Amin, Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu and Omaima Sohail have been elevated to Category B, while Muneeba Ali and Ayesha Naseem have been upgraded to Category C. Javeria Khan, who had an ordinary 2021-22 season by her own standards when she managed 141 runs in 10 ODIs, has been demoted to Category C along with all-rounder Kainat Imtiaz, who scored 61 runs in three ODIs and failed to take a wicket. In her only T20I in the previous season, she took one wicket and scored four runs Asmavia Iqbal, chair of women's selection committee said, Eight players receiving enhanced contracts and three players being offered contracts for the first time is an indicator that we are heading in the right direction, though we still have a long road ahead to narrow the gap with the leading sides. We have made progress in the 2021-22 season and I am sure with the amount of cricket that lies ahead, we will emerge as an improved side at the end of the season. Central contracts are not only a way to incentivise, appreciate and reward players for their contributions in the previous season, it is also a method to challenge the players to either reclaim or earn better contracts next season, which is only possible through on-field performances. With the investment being made and the opportunities that are presently available, I am optimistic that we will have more good news to share next year. Women's Central Contracts 2022-23: Category A (3) - Aliya Riaz, Bismah Maroof and Nida Dar Category B (5) - Anam Amin, Diana Baig, Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu and Omaima Sohail Category C (5) - Ayesha Naseem, Muneeba Ali, Javeria Khan, Sidra Amin and Sidra Nawaz Also Read: Scorecard Category D (7) - Ghulam Fatima, Gul Feroza, Iram Javed, Kainat Imtiaz, Sadia Iqbal, Sadaf Shamas and Tuba Hassan

Rocketry review: Madhavan stumbles through an intriguing real life story

Review If the film still strikes a chord somewhere despite all the bungling, it is because you know someone lived through this story. That alone makes it worth a watch. Sowmya Rajendran Screengrab The infamous spy case foisted on ISROs star aerospace engineer Nambi Narayanan is a blot on the countrys history. Decades have passed since Nambi was arrested out of the blue, tortured, and declared a traitor for selling rocket secrets to Pakistan. But the whys and hows of the case are still murky. Ahead of watching Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, directed by Madhavan who also plays the lead role, I read about the case once again to refresh my memory. How could a man who had been an integral part of Indian space science be branded so easily as a criminal? This is an intriguing and frightening real life story; a tale of incredible determination, hard work, deceit, betrayal and conspiracy that also involves international and local politics. To weave this into a cogent narrative while also making the science simple enough for the audience to grasp is a big ask. I was hoping Rocketry would do better than 2019s Mission Mangal in which Vidya Balan sets up a stove and fries poori inside ISRO to demonstrate a scientific principle. The film begins with the heavens above and the earth below, Vedic chants in the background. It is difficult to sit through it without being reminded of Madhavans disastrous claim that ISRO scientists had used the ancient geocentric panchangam for their Mars mission, and that Indians already knew everything that was to be known about space a thousand years ago. We meet Nambis family, and his daughter casually remarks that shes unsure if her husband who also works at ISRO is a scientist or astrologer because hes always holding on to the panchangam in bed. My heart, which was already sinking, reached my feet at this point. Was the whole movie going to be on WhatsApp University territory? To my relief, it does take off. Somewhat. It is 1994 and Nambi is arrested. His family is attacked and shamed. Cut to the present when hes on a talk show with actor Suriya (who appears as himself). The employees at the studio are unimpressed. They make disparaging comments on the old man theyre sure hes going to be boring. We know why theyre there. It is for the reaction shots that will come later. When they look suitably awed by what Nambi has revealed. The actors arent great and the direction is obvious but the story itself is so powerful that you are moved despite these flaws. Madhavan is a better actor than a director. Especially as the elderly Nambi, he comes very close to the actual man in his body language and speech. The film takes us through the young Nambis ambition, his desire to put India on the map in space research and explorations. For the sake of cinematic convenience, everybody at ISRO speaks Tamil, including pioneering scientist Vikram Sarabhai (Ravi Raghavendra). There is a young Kalam too. While many science fiction films show scientists as people with mismanaged hair pouring colourful, bubbling liquids into test tubes, in reality, doing good science is also about dealing with budgetary constraints and dealing with bureaucracy. The Indian talent for jugaad was born out of that necessity, and Rocketry gives us an unconventional man who always thought big. The first half of the film establishes Nambis rise which corresponds with Indias fledgling attempts to make a mark in the field. For a layperson though, it is unclear why Indias stake in the race is important beyond a patriotism project. Take the interval block when Nambi and his team pull off a remarkable success the significance of the moment is lost on a viewer who doesnt already understand it. Perhaps out of an eagerness to not talk down to the audience (like frying pooris), Rocketry doesnt nearly explain enough. There is an omelette scene which is close to the poori one, but it still demands a leap of imagination and some prior knowledge for you to get what our leading man is so excited about. Simran as Nambis wife Meena delivers a brilliant performance. It is only in the second half that she gets to sink her teeth into the role, but its her performance that drives home the tragic consequences that the false case had on the concerned people. As the stricken Meena who is unable to come to terms with what has happened, Simran is riveting in the few scenes that she is given. The supporting cast, though, leaves much to be desired. Barring Madhavan, Simran and Karthik Kumar (who plays a CBI officer), the rest of the performances are shaky. There are some great anecdotes from Nambis life (like the linguistic trick he pulled on the French with his team) that pepper the film, and a better cast would have greatly helped Rocketry. For some reason, the white women are always hitting on Nambi while he modestly tells them that he has a wife; I suppose this is to underline the irony of the allegation that he was involved in a honey trap later, but it is jarring when the few women characters in the film have nothing better to do. There are no songs, and Sam CSs music alternates between a cheery comic track to a rousing background score. If you havent already done your homework and read about the case before watching the film, chances are that you will find it difficult to piece together what exactly happened. Madhavan hints at a conspiracy and the involvement of a foreign hand all through the film from Sarabhais death to who dragged Nambis name into the case but there isnt any new insight that you gain from it. The politics within the different factions of the Congress in Kerala was another big reason for Nambis arrest, but perhaps to avoid political controversies, the film skims past it. Rocketry is meant as a tribute to Nambi, and the final sequence with Suriya is testament to that. Madhavan throws subtlety to the wind and goes all out to make it up to Nambi. The intention is noble, but the scene veers towards the theatrical. In contrast, the scene with Nambi and Meena in the rain with the Indian flag in focus has no dialogues but it makes the point powerfully. Madhavans howler with the panchangam does feature in the film its blurred and beeped out but you know what it is. The actor-director has shot himself in the foot with this costly slip-up, and as a viewer, you cant help but doubt his grip on the story that he has chosen to tell. This is one instance where the subject is, indeed, rocket science, and the lack of a scientific temper in the making hurts the film. Nambi deserved a better take-off than this. If the film still strikes a chord somewhere despite all the bungling, it is because you know someone lived through this story. That alone makes it worth a watch. Disclaimer: This review was not paid for or commissioned by anyone associated with the film. Neither TNM nor any of its reviewers have any sort of business relationship with the film's producers or any other members of its cast and crew.

'No terror group in Kanhaiya's murder..,' NIA report raises serious questions on 'Congress' intention?

Jaipur: In the wake of the brutal murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur in Rajasthan, the Congress government in the state is trying to hide the fundamentalism that is flourishing in the Muslim community by seeking a terror angle to save its vote bank and repeatedly trying to prove it as a Pakistan connection. At the same time, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has categorically ruled out the possibility of any terrorist organization's role in the case. Preliminary inquiry suggests that there may not be any terrorist group involved in the murder but a terror gang: NIA ANI (@ANI) June 30, 2022 The NIA has said that preliminary investigation has revealed that there may be no terror outfit but a terror group involved in the killing. It can have not only two Members, but many more Members. At the same time, the NIA will question the two accused who killed Kanhaiya Lal, Riyaz Akhtari and Gaus Muhammad, instead of questioning them in Delhi. Both the killers will be produced before the Special NIA Court in Jaipur on Friday (July 1, 2022). The NIA has also denied the state government's claim that the killers had links with terror outfits in Pakistan. The NIA said that reports of both the accused are linked to a terror outfit are based on speculation. The state DGP, while trying to cover up the negligence of the police, had said that Rajasthan DGP M L Lather has said that a case has been registered under UAPA in the murder of Kanhaiya Lal and it is being investigated as a terrorist attack. DGP Lather had said that one of the accused, Gaus Mohammad, was associated with Dawat-e-Islami. Gaus Mohammad has also visited Karachi under the same organization in 2014. , Ashok Gehlot (@ashokgehlot51) June 29, 2022 On Wednesday (June 29, 2009), Cm Gehlot of the Congress-ruled state said, The Udaipur incident is not a religious incident but a terrorist incident. The links of the accused are connected with international organisations involved in illegal activities. The culprits will be given strict punishment by the state government without delay. We should all come together and condemn such incidents in a peaceful manner.'' But after the NIA report came out, the question is being raised as to why the Congress government and the police administration of the state are engaged in proving it to be a terrorist incident given by terrorist organisations abroad. Why is the real problem being discussed? Does Congress want the entire blame for this incident to go to Pakistan and the terrorist organisations and not to discuss the growing radicalisation in the Muslim community? While the same Congress was all-powerful in proving the 26/11 terror attack as saffron terrorism, which was carried out by Pakistani terrorist Azmal Kasab. As soon as Shinde became CM, Sharad Pawar made this big statement Eknath Shinde's story of being an AUTO-driver to becoming 'KING' of Maharashtra 'So his downfall begins..,' Raj Thackeray took dig at Uddhav

Hope itll make people think about unsung heroes: Madhavan on Nambi Narayanan biopic

Interview Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, the biopic of former ISRO rocket scientist Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of espionage and arrested in 1994, is set to hit the big screens on July 1. Saradha U Instagram/ Madhavan It is 9 pm and actor Madhavan has had interviews lined up all day since he landed in Chennai, but he is thrilled to talk about the vision behind his film Rocketry: The Nambi Effect coming to life. From the Cannes Film Festival and a 15-day US tour including a Times Square premiere of the films trailer, to media interactions and events in south Indian states, the popular actor has left no stone unturned to promote Rocketry, which marks his directorial debut. In addition to direction, Madhavan is also on board as the writer, producer and lead actor in this biopic of former rocket scientist at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Nambi Narayanan, who was falsely accused of espionage and arrested in 1994. The film is slated for release in theatres on July 1. In an interview with TNM, Madhavan says, After playing rugged characters in Vikram Vedha and similar films, I came across the 1994 ISRO spy case and it sounded like a story that would fit into a James Bondesque space. Even after over 20 years, Nambi sir was still angry with how horrible the case was, and I got caught up with it too. But after spending seven months writing the script when I went back to him, Nambi sir pointed out quite casually that there was a technical error and that he went to Princeton. At that point, I realised that the script had to be reworked, it had to focus on his journey as a scientist, which we had initially not included. Soon enough, the scope of the story went beyond its elevator pitch, and the writer-director went on to explore Nambi Narayanans achievements, which include being one of the first Indian Ivy League students, receiving $500 million worth of equipment, and learning to build the liquid fuel engine in France. People dont know many things about him, like the fact that he is a Tamilian or what qualified him for the Padma Bhushan or his contribution to space research, Madhavan points out. The trailer features Madhavan as Nambi in different time periods in his life. Many videos from the film have created a buzz among fans. Madhavan is also teaming up with actor Simran (who plays Nambis wife in the film) after 20 years. The duo were last seen together in the Mani Ratnam directorial Kannathil Muthamittal. We have tried to shed light on different sides of his personality and not just the infamous case. As for the looks, we have not used any prosthetics, says Madhavan. Watch: View this post on Instagram A post shared by R. Madhavan (@actormaddy) Making of a pan-Indian project Rocketry was originally shot in Tamil, English and Hindi, and dubbed into five different languages. The supporting cast consists of Rajit Kapur, Ravi Raghavendra, Misha Ghoshal, Karthik Kumar, Gulshan Grover, Dinesh Prabhakar and Mohan Raman, among others. We picked actors who could speak in all three languages so that the shooting could be done. As for the reason behind releasing it in so many languages, I believe that some films work better in regional languages while some have better scope as pan-Indian releases, and they need to be promoted accordingly, the 52-year-old actor says. The cast also includes Phyllis Logan, Vincent Riotta and Ron Donachie. Madhavan adds, The shoot took place in Canada, Georgia, Serbia, France and India, and we had wrapped it up before the pandemic but COVID lockdowns did cause delays in the release and promotions. We looked at OTT options, but every time we were close to finalising something we felt the movie was made to be experienced in the theatre. Behind-the-scenes images of actor Madhavan from the sets of Rocketry; The Nambi Effect. Source: Done Media In 1994, Nambi and another fellow scientist, D Sasikumaran, were accused of leaking important defence secrets to alleged Maldivian intelligence officers Mariam Rasheed and Fauzia Hassan who were accused of having links with Pakistan. Nambi was arrested and spent 50 days in jail. He was asked to make false accusations and when he denied to comply, he was tortured untill he collapsed and had to be hospitalised. The controversy eventually led to the resignation of then Kerala Chief Minister K Karunakaran. Nambis autobiography titled Ormakalude Bhramanapadham was released in October 2017. Nambi then published Ready To Fire, co-written with Arun Ram, which deconstructs the ISRO spy scandal. The scientist discusses how he was harassed and tortured by intelligence officials during the interrogation in the case, and also reflects on how large organisations like ISRO are not devoid of internal politics and squabbles. When asked if Rocketry delves deeper into the lapses in the criminal justice system and whether it was discussed during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last April, Madhavan states, No, the interrogation is a part of the story so we are hoping it will make people think about unsung heroes and the real acts of patriotism that never come to light. Our meeting with the PM was very brief so we couldnt discuss the themes the film touches upon at length. Wearing the directors hat The Vikram Vedha actor took on the mantle of director after the filmmaker who was previously attached with Rocketry had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts at the eleventh hour. Finding another director who understood the technicalities involved seemed like an impossible task. During interviews, some journalists quoted from my earlier interviews where I had said that I would never direct a film. With Rocketry, I had no other option but to either turn director or let go of the project, he says. Madhavan says that he did not find it difficult to execute his vision as he had help from Nambi. Nambi sir was there on the sets to guide us with the technical aspects, the actor adds. Rocketry is the latest addition to the long list of patriotic films to have hit the big screens in recent times such as Major, Shershaah, Sardar Udham, Satyamev Jayate and Bell Bottom, among others. How did the makers ensure that they dont end up taking a jingoistic tone? We were particular about using only factual information. In fact, we removed some information to ensure that the film is not overloaded with facts, the actor explains. Noting that separating his role as a director, producer and actor was indeed strenuous, Madhavan shares that he does not see himself directing a film in the near future. He has the film Dhokha and web series The Railway Man in the pipeline, but shares that he cannot wait to take a much-needed break after Rocketry releases. Prophet Mohammed, controversial post and assault, Karnataka police arrest 19

Bangalore: The Bidar district police in Karnataka have arrested 19 people for allegedly assaulting a youth from Basavakalyan taluk for allegedly making controversial posts against Prophet Muhammad. In fact, a young man named Sripad Talmadgi had allegedly posted a picture of the lockup with controversial remarks on Prophet Muhammad. Let me tell you that an FIR has also been lodged against Sripad. It may be recalled that already there were protests in Bengaluru, Belagavi and Chikkamagaluru in Karnataka over bjp leaders' remarks on Prophet Muhammad. However, two BJP leaders Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, who had made statements on prophethood, were suspended from the party. But even after this, in Belagavi district of Karnataka, fundamentalists hung an effigy with the picture of Nupur Sharma on the beach road. In May, Nupur Sharma (who was the spokesperson of the BJP) had made a statement about prophet Muhammad in a TV debate. This led to a lot of outrage at the global level. Let us know that 14 Muslim countries, including Qatar, Pakistan and Afghanistan, had targeted India over the comments. However, taha siddiqui, a Pakistani journalist, Canadian writer of Pakistani origin Tarek Fateh, Holland MP Girt Vilders, supported Nupur Sharma's statement, saying that there is nothing wrong in his (Nupur's) statement, it is the same as what is written in the hadith. Hindi is not the national language but the official language

These days, the debate about Hindi on social media continues. In fact, South film actor Kichcha Sudip said that Hindi is not the national language of the country and after he said this, Bollywood's hero Ajay Devgan put his class on Twitter. However, even before any dispute between the two stars escalated, there was a reconciliation between them, but a debate started on social media on whether Hindi was the national language of Hindustan or not. Now what does the constitution of the country say about it and which language is officially recognized as the national language? Hindi is not a national language let me tell you all that India is a country of diversity and that is its biggest identity. There are many languages and dialects spoken, written and read here. Yes, and because of this, no single language has been given the status of the national language. In fact, a large population of India is Hindi speaking, but a large number of people do not speak Hindi nor understand it. Nor is there any obligation for everyone to learn and speak one national language. Why do we celebrate Hindi Day on September 14?- India does not have a national language due to its various cities, but Hindi has been given the status of official language to create a linguistic basis for working in government offices. At the same time, in Part 17 of the Constitution, important provisions related to this have also been made. When did Hindi become the official language?- Hindi got the status of official language on September 14, 1949. Yes, and after this, since 1953, the Official Language Publicity Committee started organizing the Hindi the Vis on September 14 every year. What does the Constitution of the country say on the official language?- Article 343(1) of Part 17 of the Constitution of India says that the official language of the nation is Hindi and the script will be Devanagari. What is called mother tongue? Mother tongue is the language that we learn with birth. Yes, and where we are born, we learn the language spoken by ourselves. If we look at it in an easy language, then the language that we learn first after birth is considered as our mother tongue. Madeline Albright passed away, unmourned in India. No surprise. No American has hurt us more than she did, save Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger who sent nuclear warships to threaten us in 1971. Albright, America's first female secretary of state, fretted, fumed and fulminated when Atal Bihari Vajpayee tested the atom bomb in 1998; she called it a felony against the future. Dubbing us reckless, rash, unjustified, wrong-headed, unwise, she imposed sanctions, and warned the other rulers of the universe against walking away with contracts with India. Albright's antipathy was not a fallout of our bomb test, which shocked the Bill Clinton regime and shamed its CIA spies no end. It was inherited. Her father Josef Korbel, a Czech diplomat, had failed as head of a UN mission sent to broker peace between India and Pakistan soon after the first Kashmir war. Nehru was so outraged by his Pakistan bias that he called Korbel's approach to Kashmir as treating the thief and owner of the house as equals. Later Korbel wrote a book, Danger in Kashmir. The daughter started her secretaryship by asking Inder Kumar Gujral to sign the test ban treaty. But where is your signature, asked good man Gujral, knowing well that it was a treaty which the US had refused to ratify! In effect she was telling usthe treaty is not good for America, but it is good for lesser people like you. Gujral ignored her gospels. Then Vajpayee tested the bomb. Caught off her CIA guard, Madeline turned into the high priestess of non-proliferation, cursed us with bell, book, candle and sanctions, and asked us to sign the non-proliferation treaty as a non-weapon state. Take a walk, we told her. Leaving south Asia to the milder deputy secretary Strobe Talbott, Madeline walked around the Balkans and eastern Europe. The world is paying the price for it today. As discussed in this column a month ago, the Russians thought they had done a good thing to Europe by disbanding the Warsaw Pact, the military alliance they had had with the East Europeans during the Cold War. In return, they expected the west to disband the NATO, going by the gentleman's word that George Bush Sr's secretary of state James Baker had given Mikhail Gorbachev. But urged by Albright, and much against the advice of even Kissinger and her own mentor Zbigniew Brzezinski, the NATO cheated. They not only refused to disband, but roped in Russia's old allies Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, took troops and tanks to Russia's doorstep, and then launched the NATO's first war by bombing Belgrade. Cold War legend has it that Russia's prime minister Yevgeny Primakov heard of the bombing while flying to Washington for talks with Clinton and Albright. Feeling cheated, he ordered his pilot to turn back. Since known as the Primakov loop, it is considered the moment when east-west detente broke down and Cold War II began. Following in Primakov's footsteps, Vladimir Putin has been warning the NATO against further expansion. Ukraine's application for membership was the last straw on the Russian bear's back. The rest is last month's history, a tragic fallout of Madeline's follies. TAILPIECE: ASEAN foreign ministers' meetings end with a fun night. At the 1998 Manila meeting, Albright teamed up with Primakov, then foreign minister, in an East-West love story skit. Wearing an embroidered barong blouse and a big flower on her hair, Madeline sang, I want to know what you think of me. Primakov, wearing a sailor's shirt and cap, crooned back, Look in your file at the KGB. prasannan@theweek.in
