Indonesia experiences frequent earthquakes due to its location in the Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of intense seismic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

The earthquake struck at around 5:58 am local time at a depth of about 10 km, with its epicentre located 68 km north-northwest of Ende in East Nusa Tenggara province, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
