ISRO scientists share new findings while studying Black Hole GRS 1915+105
BENGALURU: A team of scientists and researchers from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday listed out their unique findings while studying the Black Hole as part of their study. They noted that the X-ray brightness from fascinating and mysterious black hole- GRS 1915+105- fluctuates dramatically over time. It exhibits a unique pattern of alternating low-brightness (dips) and high-brightness (non-dips) phases, each lasting a few hundred seconds. During the high-brightness phase, the team discovered that the rapid flickers in X-rays were repeating about 70 times per second (frequency _(QPO) 70 Hz), known as Quasi-periodic Oscillations (QPOs). Interestingly, such fast flickers vanish during the low-brightness phase, noted the researchers Anju Nandi from ISRO, Santabrata Das from IIT- Guwahati, Sreehari H from Hafiza University and Seshadri Majumder from IIT Guwahati. India's first dedicated multi-wavelength space observatory, AstroSat, has been continuously monitoring the black hole GRS 1915+105 since its launch in September 2015 and is working to provide insights into source's behaviour. Explaining what causes the mysterious fast flickers, the research team in the report stated that they found that these rapid QPOs are intimately connected to a super-heated cloud of energetic plasma surrounding the black hole, known as corona. During the bright high-energy phases when QPOs are strongest, the corona becomes more compact and significantly hotter with higher luminosity. Conversely, in the dimmer dip phases, the corona expands and cools, causing the flickers to vanish. This pattern suggests that the compact oscillating corona seems to be the origin of these fast QPO signals. This research work titled- Evidence of oscillating compact Comptonized corona in GRS 1915+105: insights into HFQPOs with AstroSat- was also been published in the journal, Monthly Notices of Royal Astronomical Society on July 4, 2025. ISRO shared the details on July 25. The research team noted that these findings will help scientists understand what happens in the vicinity of a black hole, where gravity is incredibly strong and conditions are extreme. Indeed, GRS 1915+105 acts as cosmic laboratory, and with AstroSat's remarkable contributions, Indian scientists are decoding the whispers of this black hole, the report stated. Black holes are termed to be the universe's most enigmatic powerhouses. They cannot be seen directly, but their immense gravity reveals their presence. Born from the collapse of massive stars that exhaust their fuel, these cosmic voids are invisible because not even light can escape their grasp. However, a black hole in a binary system with a companion star, triggers a dramatic process known as accretion, pulling in stellar material that spirals inward and heats up to over 10 million degrees (far hotter than the Sun's surface temperature of 6000 degrees). This super-heated matter emits intense X-rays, which are captured by space telescopes, offering scientists a rare window into the otherwise hidden lives of black holes. In a distant corner of our galaxy (nearly 28000 light-years away) lies the GRS 1915+105. This intriguing black hole X-ray binary system, consists of a rapidly rotating black hole with a mass about 12 times that of a Sun and its companion star, has captured the attention of scientists due to its unusual and dynamic behaviour. A schematic diagram of the complex accretion process around GRS 1915+105, forming a swirling disc (1-10 million degree) and corona (100 million degrees) structure, is depicted, explained the scientists' team.

Nearly 4,000 MT of coal allegedly disappears from Meghalaya depots; HC slams Government inaction
GUWAHATI: The High Court of Meghalaya has sought action from the state government after nearly 4,000 metric tonnes (MT) of allegedly illegally mined coal disappeared from two coal depots. The matter came to light when the Justice BP Katakey (Retd) committee submitted its 31st interim report in the court on Thursday. The court had appointed Katakey a few years ago to recommend measures to be taken by the state government on matters relating to coal. Earlier, the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) had recorded 1,839.03 MT of coal at a depot in Diengngan village in Ri-Bhoi district. However, during a recent inspection, only 2.5 MT of coal was found along with residue and traces of coal. Similarly, only about 8 MT of coal along with residue and traces of coal was found at the Rajaju village depot in West Khasi Hills district as against 2,121.62 MT of coal recorded by the MBDA earlier. A two-judge division bench of Justices HS Thangkhiew and W Diengdoh, in an order, said the matter was of concern, stating that despite detection, the illegally mined coal had been lifted and transported by unknown persons. The court directed the state government to take urgent action and hold persons or officials under whose watch it was allowed to happen, accountable. Further, it directed the government to trace the persons who lifted the coal illegally. The government filed a status report, citing the steps taken with regard to illegally mined coal in South Garo Hills district and also the disappearance of the coal from Rajaju and Diengngan depots. However, the court said that apart from indicating that FIRs had been lodged, no other information was given. The National Green Tribunal had banned rat-hole coal mining in 2014, but groups and organisations in Meghalaya allege that there is no let-up in the illegal mining and transportation of coal in the state. Earlier, Coal India Limited was involved in the process of auctioning and transporting inventoried coal following court orders relating to illegal mining and transportation. There have been instances when it was found that the amount of inventoried coal in some depots did not decrease even after its auction and transportation. This was allegedly because coal mined illegally and freshly was kept in the depots to make it appear like inventoried coal. Meghalaya has reported several coal mine tragedies in the past, which claimed dozens of lives. High wages continue to draw miners to the region.

Assam eviction drives alarm in neighbouring states, influx feared
GUWAHATI: The eviction drives in Assam have triggered panic in the neighbouring states about possible influx of the evicted people and illegal immigrants. After Nagaland and Manipur governments issued advisories to thwart the illegal entry of the people, the Meghalaya government issued an alert on Thursday at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, are protected states where the Inner Line Permit (ILP) has already been implemented. The ILP is an official document that an Indian citizen should carry while visiting these states for a limited period. Meghalaya does not have any such constitutional safeguard. The Meghalaya chief minister said the purpose of the security review meeting was to discuss the overall effect of the Assam eviction drives. The government has been continuously engaging with the district magistrates so that they further engage with block development officers, police, NGOs, traditional heads and other stakeholders, and ensure there is no infiltration or movement because of the Assam eviction drives, Sangma said. He said the districts bordering Assam and areas closer to places of eviction drives were vulnerable and therefore had been asked to stay on alert. However, no incident has taken place in any of the districts, he added. Nagaland has been on alert for the past few days. Various student organisations issued separate statements, expressing fear about influx of the displaced people and illegal migrants. Their worries strengthened after authorities prevented the illegal entry of the evicted people into Nagalands Niuland district. As Assam eviction drive continues, Naga groups worry over influx of displaced people into Nagaland More than 200 vehicles, carrying illegal immigrants evicted from Assam and trying to enter Niuland district, were deported back from Niuland check post by the district administration, police and CRPF from various locations in the district, the Niuland district magistrate stated on Wednesday. The states apex students body, Naga Students Federation (NSF), on Thursday urged the state government to institutionalise a mandatory landlord-tenant registration system as a supporting mechanism for the effective enforcement of the ILP. The NSF said despite the introduction of online ILP portals and QR-code-based verification, there remained serious enforcement gaps, particularly in urban and peri-urban areas. Assams BJP-led government carried out the eviction drives in four districts which affected thousands of people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims. Golaghat district, which shares its border with Nagaland, is bracing for an eviction drive. Eviction drive in Assam's Goalpara turns violent; one killed in police firing

As Assam eviction drive continues, Naga groups worry over influx of displaced people into Nagaland
GUWAHATI: The eviction drives in Assam have left the Nagas worried about a possible influx of the displaced people into Nagaland. The Konyak Students Union, apex student body of Konyak Nagas in Nagaland, on July 23, directed its federating units, especially in Tizit and Naginimora areas, to deploy 100 volunteers daily to every entry point of Mon district. The volunteers are tasked with checking all non-locals entering Mon district to ensure they are carrying valid ILP (Inner Line Permit) and proper documentation, the students organisation said in a notification. An offshoot of the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation of 1873, the ILP is an official document that an Indian citizen is required to carry while visiting the protected states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh for a short period. The Konyak students body said anyone found without valid documents must be sent back immediately from Mon district. It appealed to the district administration to suspend the issuance of the ILP for a minimum period of one month, to allow proper scrutiny and prevent unchecked influx of people into Mon. Strict compliance from all units and authorities concerned is expected in the interest of safeguarding our indigenous rights and security, the statement added. Two days ago, the Western Sumi Students Union in Nagaland had expressed similar concerns. alleged illegal immigrants residing in Naga-inhabited areas along the Assam-Nagaland border are in close proximity to villages within Nagaland. This situation further heightens the risks of conflict, displacement and demographic pressure on our vulnerable border communities, the organisation had warned in a statement. Currently, the Assam government is conducting land survey operations at Uriamghat, bordering Nagaland, in Golaghat district ahead of a proposed eviction drive. In the wake of the survey, many illegal settlers left the place. In recent times, Assams BJP-led government carried out eviction drives in three districts that affected thousands of people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims. One person was killed in firing while several others, including police and forest department personnel, were injured in western Assams Goalpara district recently when an eviction drive turned violent. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government had reclaimed 1.29 lakh bighas of land from encroachers and this effort would continue.

PM Modi's post on Dhankhar's resignation 'revealed its political nature': Gaurav Gogoi
GUWAHATI: Deputy Leader of the Congress in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's social media post on Jagdeep Dhankhar's exit as vice president showed he political nature of the resignation. Dhankhar resigned from his post on Monday evening, citing medical reasons. He sent his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu and said he was stepping down with immediate effect. Notably, Gogoi did not mention Dhankhar's name in his post on X. The dignity of a Constitutional post should be maintained both in it's (sic) role of a Presiding Officer and in it's (sic) resignation. PM Modi's tweet has revealed the political nature of the resignation, Gogoi wrote. Modi wished Dhankhar good health and said he got many opportunities to serve the country in various capacities. Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health, the PM wrote on X. Dhankhar's decision to resign as Vice President has triggered a firestorm of speculation on whether there was more to it than o prioritise health care, as his sudden move had capped a day of events in Rajya Sabha on his watch which took the government by surprise and put it in a damage-control mode. On its part, the Congress claimed the reasons behind his resignation are far deeper than the health issues cited by him. The usual effusive praise that is showered on an occupant of a high office on his departure was missing from the ruling alliance's side, an indication that the government was probably happy to see him go. However, it was the opposition, which had signed a notice to impeach Dhankhar last year for his alleged biases, that had nice words for him. Health reasons or political unease? Is Manipur Assembly alive, dead or constitutionally deemed to be dissolved?: Congress to governor
GUWAHATI: The Congress in Manipur on Tuesday petitioned Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging him to clarify the status of the 12th state Assembly since the imposition of Presidents rule on February 13. The ethnic violence-hit state was placed under Presidents rule days after the Chief Minister N Biren Singh had stepped down. In a memorandum submitted to the governor, the Congress asked if the Assembly is alive, dead or constitutionally deemed to be dissolved from the midnight of February 11. the Honble Governor fixed the date of the 7th Assembly session for 10.02.2025 in order to comply with the 6-month timeline prescribed under Article 174 (1) of the Constitution of India between two sittings of the House, the Congress said in the memorandum. Since the last sitting of the House was held on 12.08.2024, therefore, as per Article 174 (1) of the Constitution, the next sitting ought to have been mandatorily held on or before 11.02.2025, the party further stated. However, the Congress added, there were two events on February 9 Singh resigned as the chief minister and the governor declared his January 24, 2025 order summoning a sitting of the Assembly on February 11 as null and void. President's rule failed to maintain peace in Manipur: Congress Advocate and Congress spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, who was part of the four-member delegation from Congress legal cell that submitted the memorandum at the Raj Bhavan, argued that when Singh quit as the chief minister, the Assembly was not in suspension, and therefore, the mandatory rigours of Article 174 of the Constitution of India would squarely apply in Manipur. The Congress alleged that the governors February 9 order attempted to circumvent the rigours of Article 174 (1), further delaying the sitting of the House beyond the constitutionally permitted mandate. The party maintained that the Assembly ought to have conducted a sitting on or before February 11. Even a day beyond the constitutionally permissible limit would amount to a direct violation of Article 174 of the Constitution of India, the Congress said. Is it to be concluded that any actions or orders of the Honble Governor of Manipur, in future, to summon the next Assembly sittingwould tantamount to a violation of the Article 174(1), and, hence, the Honble Governor would be constitutionally barred from summoning a sitting of the remaining term of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly? the Congress asked.

Hidden cameras, Pegasus-like systems were used to honeytrap MLAs of MVA government: Sena (UBT)
MUMBAI: Hidden cameras and a Pegasus-like surveillance system were used to honeytrap Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) MLAs and MPs, leading to the collapse of the Uddhav Thackeray-led government in 2022, the Shiv Sena (UBT) claimed on Tuesday. A Saamana editorial stated that some MLAs of the undivided Shiv Sena and the NCP switched loyalties due to pressure from Central agencies. At least 18 MLAs and four MPs were honeytrapped, prompting them to join hands with the BJP to save their image. It further said Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar had alleged that MPs and MLAs were blackmailed and as a former leader of the opposition, his remarks must be taken seriously. Hidden cameras and a Pegasus-like system from Israel were used (for surveillance) to its fullest extent. It is now clear that the MVA government collapsed due to this (honey) trapping, the editorial said. Pegasus is a spyware developed by Israeli cyber-arms company NSO Group. The BJP had a system to honeytrap, and even policemen conducted surveillance on the opposition, the Saamana said. When a pen drive containing evidence of honeytrapping, which involved Shiv Sena MPs and MLAs, was handed over to Eknath Shinde, they set out on their journey to Surat, Guwahati and then to Goa. This is all like a suspense thriller, the editorial said. The Sena (UBT) was alluding to the split engineered by Shinde in the undivided Shiv Sena in 2022. The Saamana stated that Shinde initially lacked the numerical strength and had the backing of only nine or ten MLAs at the time. However, the people from the home department and the then leader of the opposition, Devendra Fadnavis, blackmailed MPs and MLAs. The editorial stated that Shiv Sena ministers Sanjay Shirsat, Yogesh Kadam and Dada Bhuse, and their NCP colleague Manik Kokate should be sacked from the state cabinet. Some ministers were honeytrapped, and they will also have to go. The conduct of some ministers indicates that a cabinet reshuffle is on the cards in Maharashtra, the Saamana added. Hindus to become minority in Assam in 10 years: CM Himanta Sarma
GUWAHATI: Citing demographic changes in Assam due to alleged illegal migration, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said Hindus are likely to become a minority in the state within the next 10 years. If you compare the demography of Assam in 1951 with that of the present day, it has reached a point where the Assamese and Hindus will become minorities in the next 10 years. We must revive a community staring at extinction, Sarma told the media. Reflecting on the past four years, the Chief Minister said they had been years of satisfaction for the BJP-led government, during which several achievements were made despite attempts to derail its efforts. We reclaimed 1.29 lakh bighas of land, and this endeavour is ongoing, he said. According to Sarma, the reclaimed land at Orang has become a habitat for one-horned rhinoceroses and tigers. At Borsola, a solar project has been set up. Elephants have returned to Lumding. The reclaimed land at Burapahar now provides a safe haven for tigers and rhinos. Paikan, once covered with teak plantations, will be green again, he said, referring to areas cleared of encroachments. 'Divisive agenda of Assam BJP crossed all limits,' says Mamata; Himanta accuses Bengal CM of 'appeasement' politics Two days earlier, the Chief Minister had said that the people of Assam, particularly Hindus, were becoming a hopeless minority in their own land, a transformation he claimed occurred over the past six decades. We have lost our culture, our land, our temples. The law provides us no remedy. That is why we are desperate, not for revenge, but for survival. Yes, we may be fighting a losing battle. But we will go down fighting ,with dignity, within the bounds of law, and for the soul of Assam, he had stated. Meanwhile, the eviction drives in Assam have raised concerns in neighbouring Nagaland. A student organisation there expressed apprehension over a possible influx of displaced illegal immigrants into the state. It is pertinent to note that alleged illegal immigrants residing in areas adjacent to Naga-inhabited regions along the AssamNagaland border are in close proximity to villages within Nagaland. This situation further heightens the risks of conflict, displacement, and demographic pressure on our vulnerable border communities, the Western Sumi Students Union said in a statement issued on Monday. The Assam government is now preparing to carry out an eviction drive at Uriamghat, near the AssamNagaland border. Amid ongoing land survey operations in Golaghat district, illegal settlers have reportedly begun vacating the area. Eviction drive in Assam's Goalpara turns violent; one killed in police firing

KOLKATA: Without a pause, he can recite the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore, Jibanananda Das and Shakti Chattopadhyay one after another. Closely associated with the RSS for more than five decades, Samik Bhattacharya, known for his calm demeanour and poetic sensibilities, is now at the helm of West Bengal BJP as its new state president. The saffron party has handed him the baton to lead the organisation into the crucial Assembly elections that are just 9-10 months away. Originally from Panchanantala in Howrah, Bhattacharya first came into contact with the RSS there. During his student days at Cotton College in Guwahati, he briefly worked with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). A good speaker in Bengali, English and Hindi, the 61-year-old Bhattacharya has consistently maintained his stance with dignity and without a trace of malice toward his opponents. He has endured several political ups and downs. At one point, he had to face internal strife within the Youth Morcha. Yet he remained unwavering in his mission. When confronted with uncomfortable questions about his past in the party, Bhattacharya often responds by quoting his favourite Bengali poet, Premendra Mitra. His loyalty to the BJP is resolute. He reportedly remains indifferent to internal gossip or dissent. Bhattacharya was first elected to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in a by-election from the Basirhat South constituency a decade ago. Though his tenure as an MLA was brief, he earned praise for his eloquent speeches in the Assembly. However, back then, he was not particularly known as a strong organiser. In 2016, he was allegedly offered a ministerial berth by the Trinamool Congress to switch sides, which he turned down with a smile. Since Suvendu Adhikaris defection from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP in late 2020, infighting has plagued the BJPs state unit. The result has been a fractured organisation, split between old and new factions. Despite the BJP winning 77 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections, its strength in the House has now dwindled to 65 after several MLAs crossed over to the Trinamool Congress. Furthermore, since 2021, the ruling party has won 10 out of 11 Assembly by-elections in the state. Bairon Biswas, elected on a Congress ticket from Sagardighi, also later joined the Trinamool Congress. Following Dilip Ghoshs tenure as state BJP president, Sukanta Majumdar took over the role. Ghosh, a former RSS pracharak, led the party from 2015 to 2021 and was credited with expanding the party's Lok Sabha presence in West Bengal from just two seats to 18 in the 2019 General Elections. However, despite the momentum, the BJP failed to convert that into success in the 2021 Assembly elections. Majumdar, unlike his predecessor, allegedly struggled to command the respect and loyalty of party workers. Under his leadership, the BJP was unable to halt the Trinamool Congresss advances, resulting in many workers defecting to the ruling party. Even the party's stronghold in North Bengal was significantly weakened. At this pivotal moment, Bhattacharyawho also serves as a Rajya Sabha memberhas taken charge. With the Assembly elections on the horizon, his primary task is to unify the partys various factions and formulate a counter-strategy to challenge the Trinamool Congresss bid to retain power in the state. Having long admired Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a liberal political figure, Bhattacharya has indicated that he would steer away from what he calls Extreme Hinduism. Instead, he has called for a united opposition to take on the ruling party in the state. He has also made a clarion appeal to Congress and CPI(M) workers: Give up your party flags for some time and join the movement to dislodge the Trinamool Congress from the corridors of power. Whether Bhattacharya can lead the BJP to a victory in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections remains a million-dollar question. But one thing is clearBhattacharya, a man with no personal following within the BJP, enjoys popularity among grassroots workers and supporters. His ability to remain neutral in internal conflicts may well be his strongest asset.
China begins mega dam construction in Tibet amid concerns in India
GUWAHATI: China has begun constructing a mega hydropower project on Yarlung Tsangpo River in the Nyingchi region of south-eastern Tibet. Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the project commencement ceremony on Saturday, according to the state-run media. Beijing had approved the multi-billion-dollar project in 2023. The hydropower dam, said to be the worlds largest such project, will generate 60,000 MW of power. Yarlung Tsangpo enters Arunachal Pradesh as Siang and becomes Brahmaputra in Assam before flowing into Bangladesh. Amid concerns that China might dry up the Brahmaputra, Arunachal Chief Minister Pema Khandu and his Assam counterpart Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed contrasting views on the project in the recent past. China's mega dam a ticking water bomb and existential threat to Arunachal, says CM Khandu Khandu described the project as a ticking water bomb and an existential threat to the people of his state and their livelihoods. He said the dam was a matter of grave concern as China is not a signatory to the international water treaty and the country cannot be trusted. No one knows what China might do. It could even use this as a sort of water bomb In case, the dam is built and they release water out suddenly, our entire Siang belt would be destroyed, Khandu had stated. In the light of this threat, he said the Arunachal government, in consultations with the Centre, had conceived the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project as a defence mechanism as well as for water security. While Khandu is also apprehensive about Chinas possible attempts to dry up Siang and Brahmaputra rivers, the Assam chief minister took it lightly. He said China contributes only 30-35% of Brahmaputras total flow, mostly through glacial melt and limited Tibetan rainfall. The remaining 65-70% is generated within India, thanks to torrential monsoon rainfall in Arunachal, Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya; major tributaries like Subansiri, Lohit, Kameng, Manas, Dhansiri, Jia-Bharali, Kopili; and additional inflows from the Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia Hills via rivers such as Krishnai, Digaru, and Kulsi, Sarma had posted on X on June 2. The Brahmaputra is not a river India depends on upstream -- it is a rain-fed Indian river system, strengthened after entering Indian territory, he had further stated.

'Divisive agenda of BJP in Assam crossed all limits, people will fight back': Mamata Banerjee
KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday slammed the BJP government in Assam for threatening Bengali-speaking people in the northeastern state, who want to peacefully coexist, respecting all languages and religions. Banerjee also asserted that the divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits. The TMC supremo has been accusing the Centre and the BJP-ruled states of systematically targeting Bengali-speaking migrants by branding them as illegal Bangladeshi or Rohingya. The second most spoken language in the country, Bangla, is also the second most spoken language of Assam. To threaten citizens, who want to coexist peacefully respecting all languages and religions, with persecution for upholding their own mother tongue is discriminatory and unconstitutional. This divisive agenda of the BJP in Assam has crossed all limits and people of Assam will fight back, she said in a post on X. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had alleged on Thursday that his West Bengal counterpart was only concerned about Bengali-speaking Muslims. The question is whether Mamata Banerjee likes Bengalis or only Muslim-Bengalis. My answer is only Muslim-Bengalis, Sarma had alleged in Guwahati, responding to the Bengal CM's recent accusation against the BJP of weaponising linguistic identity to achieve political goals. If she comes to Assam for the Muslim-Bengalis, the Assamese people and Hindu-Bengalis will not spare her, he said. He changed colours like a chameleon: Shinde lambasts Uddhav Thackeray
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday hit out at Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, accusing him of betraying his ally Devendra Fadnavis in 2019. Replying to the opposition's Last week's Motion in the legislative council, Shinde said, without naming Thackeray, that Fadnavis made 40-50 calls after the alliance of the undivided Shiv Sena and BJP retained its majority in the 2019 assembly elections. But there was no response (from Thackeray) to the BJP leader's calls, said Shinde. Maharashtra has never seen a chameleon changing colours so fast. He went with those whom he once considered lowly, Shinde said in an apparent reference to Thackeray joining hands with the Congress after severing the alliance with the BJP. It was because of his (Shinde's) request that Fadnavis had agreed to cede the post of Mumbai's mayor to the Shiv Sena in 2017 after the Sena won 84 seats and the BJP 82 in the civic polls, Shinde said. Amid tensions between BJP and Shinde's Sena, Maharashtra CM Fadnavis invites Uddhav to join govt But he (Thackeray) betrayed Fadnavis in 2019 (by walking out of the alliance), Shinde added. Shinde also claimed that while he and rebel Sena MLAs supporting him were camping in Guwahati in 2022 after rebelling against Thackeray, the latter approached him for reconciliation, and at the same time told the BJP leadership in Delhi not to support the rebel group. Shinde said the Thackeray government had announced starting a music school in the name of Lata Mageshkar after the singing legend's death. But when the Mangeshkar family awarded the first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Thackeray got so upset that he decided against starting the music school, Shinde claimed. When he became chief minister in 2022, he started the music school, Shinde added. Notably, Shinde's reminder of Thackeray 'betraying' Fadnavis and the BJP in 2019 came a day after the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief met the Maharashtra Chief Minister. A day earlier, Fadnavis, in a tongue-in-cheek remark in the House, had asked Thackeray to come over to the ruling side.

Five Assam districts hit by drought-like situation
GUWAHATI: Five Assam districts have been hit by a drought-like situation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday. Addressing a press conference after a cabinet meeting, he said five western Assam districts, such as Kokrajhar, Barpeta, Dhubri, Baksa and Bongaigaon, received less-than-normal rainfall. According to IMD and groundwater commission data, these districts received 40% deficient rainfall, Sarma said. He also said that the Revenue Department would declare them as hit by a drought-like situation. Stating that farmers, who had insured their crops under the Fasal Bima Yojana, would be eligible for compensation, he said some other districts of eastern Assam received either excess or deficient rainfall. Meanwhile, the cabinet approved the issuance of concurrence for financial sanction of Rs 342 crore for the implementation of Mukhya Mantri Eti Koli Duti Paat (Assam Tea Garden Workers' Financial Assistance Scheme-2025) flagship scheme. This initiative marks the 200th year celebration of Assam Tea and aims to provide one-time financial assistance to tea garden workers in recognition of their invaluable contribution. The main objective of the scheme is to promote financial inclusion by ensuring all beneficiaries have active, Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. Arunachal introduces trained 'support persons' to aid child victims during legal process
GUWAHATI: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Friday approved the adoption of model guidelines for support persons under Section 39 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, with necessary state-specific modifications. Trained support persons will help children who are victims of crimes, including sexual abuse, and often feel scared, confused and alone during police investigations and court trials. Sharing the details, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said one trained person would support every 10 child victims. Theyll guide the child through medical checks, police questions, and court hearings, and make sure the child feels safe, heard, and not alone, the chief minister said, adding that Arunachal made changes to suit local needs and ensure better help. Khandu also stated that this step would ensure that children get the emotional and practical support they need to face the legal process with dignity. This will ensure a child-friendly justice process, offer emotional and legal support to child victims and enhance protection for vulnerable children in court proceedings, he further stated. The cabinet also approved several significant decisions aimed at strengthening technical education, public safety and administrative efficiency. It approved the raising of an India Reserve Battalion. The state currently has two State Armed Police Battalions and five India Reserve Battalions. The addition of a new battalion will significantly augment policing capacity, improve public safety, maintain law and order, and reduce reliance on Central Armed Police Forces. This will also generate employment opportunities for eligible local youth, a government statement said. Taking to X, Khandu wrote, In todays cabinet, we focused on what matters: generating revenue, maintaining strong fiscal health, and unlocking the potential of our natural resources like hydropower. With a steady focus on revenue and fiscal discipline, weve put ourselves in a strong position to create more jobs and opportunities for our youth.
Police examining if speeches by Rahul, Kharge allegedly incited Paikan violence: Assam CM Himanta
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said the police were examining whether the allegedly provocative speeches made by Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi were responsible for Thursdays violence at the Paikan Reserve Forest in Goalpara district. One person was killed and over a dozen others were injured during a clash between allegedly evicted settlers and police-forest battalion personnel. The allegedly evicted settlers carried out an attack with stones and sticks, prompting the personnel to open fire. The injured included several personnel. Sarma said Gandhi held a meeting in Assams Chaygaon on the eve of the incident at Paikan. He said some people, including a Zila Parishad member of the Congress from Goalpara, had gone to listen to Gandhi. After the meeting was over, they went to Paikan and provoked people that night. The people pounced upon forest department personnel the next morning, Sarma said. He claimed the violence was planned a day in advance. The Assam Police are examining if the allegedly provocative speeches made by Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge had any impact here (Paikan). If they had, we will have to call them (Gandhi and Kharge) later. After all, one person died while another is now critical. The chief minister said if Gandhi had not made the allegedly provocative statement, the incident at Paikan would not have occurred. He cited past instances when people peacefully vacated areas they had encroached upon ahead of eviction drives. Sarma said the police acted swiftly and arrested 10 people in connection with the violence. In our dictionary, we dont think or talk of doing. We did (arrested 10 people) within 1 to 2 hours of the incident. Paikan is empty now, he further stated. Gandhi and Kharge had visited Assam two days ago to assess the Congress preparations for the Assam polls, due early next year. During their stay, they held meetings with party workers.
