Assam government's revolving fund of Rs 25,000 helping women SHGs: CM Himanta Biswa
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that women, who earlier struggled with high-interest microfinance loans, are now able to engage in productive activities with the Rs 25,000 revolving fund provided under the Chief Ministers Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan. Speaking at a cheque distribution event in Dhekiajuli constituency of Sonitpur district, Sarma said Assam has around 4 lakh Self Help Groups (SHGs) with over 40 lakh women members. Among them, 8.5 lakh women are already earning Rs 1 lakh or more annually, making them Lakhpati Baideus. Many have even become Maha Lakhpati Baideus, earning up to Rs 10 lakh a year, he said. The CM launched the distribution of cheques to 31,224 SHG members, including 29,523 women from rural areas and 1,701 from urban areas. He noted that many groups have also taken bank loans with a 99 per cent repayment rate and expressed confidence that with proper support, the remaining 32 lakh SHG women could also become Lakhpati Baideus. Sarma urged beneficiaries to use the funds for income-generating activities like dairy, beekeeping, preparing traditional food items, or expanding family enterprises. He suggested that groups could pool their funds for larger bank loans or use them individually for self-employment. Explaining the schemes structure, Sarma said women who productively use the Rs 10,000 seed capital this year will qualify for Rs 25,000 next year with bank support, and eventually Rs 50,000 in the next phase. The scheme will involve an expenditure of Rs 4,000 crore at the seed capital stage, Rs 10,000 crore at the Rs 25,000 stage, and Rs 25,000 crore at the Rs 50,000 stage. Highlighting the governments focus on womens welfare, Sarma announced that from September 17, the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, beneficiaries under Orunodoi 3.0 will start receiving Rs 1,250 monthly assistance. Each family will also get a Rs 250 subsidy for LPG cylinders, and from November 1, ration card holders will receive pulses, sugar, and salt at subsidised rates along with rice. Assam students' body protests Centre's new order on foreigners, seeks withdrawal of CAA
GUWAHATI: Assam witnessed fresh protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) on Thursday after the Centre extended the controversial laws cut-off date. Previously, non-Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who came to India until 31 December 2014, were eligible for Indian citizenship under CAA. The date has now been extended until 31 December 2024. The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and Assam Sanmilita Morcha staged protests, slamming the Centre for burdening Assam with more illegal immigrants. Back in 2019, when CAA was imposed, we feared its cut-off date could be extended. It has now become a reality. But the indigenous people of Assam have continued to stand against CAA and they will never accept it, AASU president Utpal Sarma said. The student organisation demanded the implementation of all clauses of the historic Assam Accord of 1985, sealing of the IndiaBangladesh border, and detection and deportation of all illegal immigrants. Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the political party Assam Jatiya Parishad, which spearheaded the protest by Assam Sanmilita Morcha, alleged that the Centre had conspired to finish the people of Assam politically and destroy the state economically, culturally and socially. Assam was already burdened with foreigners. They (the Centre) have now decided to burden it with more foreigners. However, people would put up a fight against this conspiracy of Delhi, Gogoi said. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma downplayed CAA, saying that altogether 12 people had applied but only three of them were granted citizenship. CAA has no impact on Assam. Five persons were killed (during anti-CAA protests) but only three persons have been granted citizenship. This proves that the (anti-CAA) agitation was not based on logic, the chief minister told the media on Thursday. According to him, Bengali Hindu people are often seen with suspicion, but they migrated before 1971. Bengali Hindus living in Assam came before 1971, so there is no need for them to apply for citizenship, he added. CAA comes in conflict with the Assam Accord, which states that illegal migrants irrespective of religious faith who arrived after 24 March 1971 are to be detected and deported.
Schoolgirl on China border in Arunachal excels, thanks to Indian Army initiative
GUWAHATI: The Indian Army has emerged as a beacon of hope for the schoolchildren of the remote Sarli tribal village on the China border. This village in Arunachal Pradesh is located about 350 km from the state capital of Itanagar. Given its remoteness, schoolchildren always struggled with limited resources, infrastructure and educational opportunities. The Army came to their rescue last year by launching a mentorship programme. The initiative by the Armys 4 Corps headquarters has yielded results, transforming aspirations into achievements. Milli Yabi (12), daughter of a farmer and a homemaker, has become the first child from Sarli to secure admission into the Sainik School, East Siang. Her success a result of perseverance and Army mentorship serves as an inspiration for the border villagers. The Army had launched the programme, recognising the motivation of local children influenced by its personnel. Thirty-three students from Classes 5 and 8 across remote villages were identified and given structured support that included 88 classes, 18 mock tests, and extensive counselling between September 2024 and April 2025.Students also benefitted from an Integration & Motivational Tour, where they interacted with Governor KT Parnaik and visited key institutions. One day, Milli may go on to qualify for the prestigious NDA Khadakwasla and proudly serve the nation in uniform, a defence ministry statement said. The Army further assisted the students in documentation and escorted them to Itanagar for the entrance examination held in April 2025.The results were unprecedented: 32 of the 33 children qualified at the national level. With counselling still underway, Milli Yabi emerged as the first candidate to secure admission, achieving final selection to the Sainik School in August. The Army is hopeful that four to six others will gain admission in the upcoming rounds. The Indian Army takes immense pride in Milli Yabis achievement that symbolises the aspirations of border communities and the resilience of Arunachals youth. Her journey demonstrates that with mentorship and opportunity, even the most remote villages can produce future leaders. One day, Milli may go on to qualify for the prestigious NDA Khadakwasla and proudly serve the nation in uniform, a defence ministry statement said. It further stated that the programme not only helped children academically but also instilled discipline, confidence, and national pride among them.Milli Yabis success is more than personal triumphit is a symbol of resilience and a powerful reminder that with guidance and opportunity, even the most remote corners of India can nurture future leaders, the statement added.

Landslides in Arunachal's Tawang, BRO clears roads
ITANAGAR: Heavy rain-triggered landslides were reported near Jang town in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district, blocking key stretches of the strategic Balipara-Charduar-Tawang (BCT) road, a critical supply line to the frontier areas. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) restored traffic movement by Wednesday midnight, ensuring uninterrupted movement of military convoys and essential supplies, a Defence spokesperson said on Thursday. The landslides took place on Wednesday evening, blocking key stretches of the strategic road. Personnel of the 42 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF) launched clearance operations. Working under difficult conditions amid continuous rainfall, the teams cleared the stretches and traffic flow was restored within a short span of time, Guwahati-based Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said in a statement. The BRO personnel also reached out to the stranded tourists, providing them with food and drinking water until the roads were declared safe. BTR sets national benchmark with 100 per cent digitisation of land records
GUWAHATI: The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government in Assam has allegedly achieved a rare milestone by recording 100% digitisation of land records, replacing the outdated manual file system and setting a benchmark in transparent governance for the entire Northeast. The Northeast has 10 autonomous councils under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution three each in Assam, Meghalaya and Mizoram, and one in Tripura. These councils are empowered to manage land, forest and local governance in their jurisdictions. However, they have long grappled with infrastructural gaps and administrative bottlenecks. In an attempt to ease governance, the BTR government launched an e-Office system, ensuring 100% digitisation of land records. The adoption of tech-driven governance has not only reshaped the administration within the BTR but also set an example for other autonomous tribal councils across the region to follow. The e-Office system allows electronic handling of files, real-time tracking of decisions, and processing of online approvals. Every land parcel has now been mapped, updated and stored securely in digital format. The digitisation of records has significantly facilitated the processing of applications under Mission Bwiswmuthi, which provides services such as mutation of land and updating of land records. This has enabled people to verify ownership and receive digitally signed documents without the alleged interference of middlemen or the need to physically visit government offices. The digitisation process began in early 2023 and was recently completed, creating a resilient ecosystem for land governance. However, the exercise was not without challenges, as officials had to conduct ground-level surveys across the five districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri, which collectively form the BTR. The process involved converting land records, including several decades-old documents, into digital format. Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping was also incorporated to ensure accuracy in land boundaries, thereby reducing possibilities of disputes. There are instances when land disputes triggered social tensions. Land digitisation has helped maintain transparency and minimise chances of corruption, forgery and conflict, an official from the BTR Land Revenue Department said, calling it a new era of digital governance in a tribal region.

His presence at the Global Maritime CEO Forum will inspire global industry leaders to invest in Indias growth story. The Minister revealed a major development for the Northeast: two luxury cruise ships are being built at a combined investment of Rs 250 crore for deployment on the Brahmaputra. These ships will be launched in 2027, providing a new dimension to Assams river-based tourism under the Cruise Bharat Mission. Sonowal said Indias maritime ecosystem had been reshaped since 2014 under Modis leadership, stating that flagship initiatives such as Sagarmala, Maritime India Vision 2030, and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 are transforming ports, shipping, and inland waterways. He highlighted that port capacity has nearly doubled, cargo handling has reached 1,600 million metric tonnes, and turnaround time at ports has reduced to 22 hours. From five operational waterways in 2014, we now have 30 today, Sonowal noted. Cargo movement on inland waterways has grown from 18 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 145 million tonnes last year. These are not just statistics, they are milestones of transformation, he further stated.

Infant dies after fall from phototherapy bed; two doctors among five suspended at Guwahati hospital
GUWAHATI: Two senior doctors were among five staff members of the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) suspended by the Assam government for the death of a four-day-old infant at the hospitals neonatal intensive care unit on 18 August. The five, doctors Anupama Deka and Deepankar Hazarika, nurses Gomati Devi and Chandana Nath, and ICU technician Ishanjyoti Talukdar were suspended for six months. In a letter to GMCH authorities, the states Medical Education and Research Department expressed the governments displeasure and issued directions to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. The newborn allegedly died after a fall from a phototherapy bed at the neonatal intensive care unit. Born to Smita Deka of Guwahatis Noonmati area, the infant had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of jaundice. The hospital authorities had ordered a probe into the incident. The police also conducted a separate investigation after an FIR was lodged by the infants father. The incident had triggered outrage. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had then warned that strong action would be taken if negligence or dereliction of duty was the reason behind this unfortunate and painful incident. This was the first such incident at the GMCH since its establishment in 1960.
Madani urges Assam government to deport foreigners, alleges community being targeted in evictions
GUWAHATI: Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind president Maulana Mahmood Madani on Tuesday asked Assams BJP-led government to deport foreigners, if any, and expressed concerns that a community was being targeted in the ongoing eviction drives in the state. Addressing a press conference, he alleged that people were being divided on the basis of religion to grab power. Particular slogans are being raised against a section. They are being called Miya, unknown, doubtful, and derogatory words are being used. That attitude is more painful than the barbaric manner in which the eviction is being carried out, Madani said. If someone is doubtful, there is a way to clear the doubt. Why do you not adopt that method? If there is a foreigner, why do you not deport them? We are not opposing that. We cannot tolerate a foreigner staying here, he further stated. He added that if Indians had been evicted, there should have been plans for their rehabilitation, which the Supreme Court had stated not in one case but in multiple cases. A seven-member delegation of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, led by Madani, visited Goalpara on Monday. A massive eviction drive was recently carried out in this lower Assam district to clear encroachment at the Paikan Reserve Forest. Over 1,000 families had settled there. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma threatened that Madani would be arrested if the latter crossed the limits. Who is Madani? He has no value, Sarma thundered when a journalist asked him about the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind chief. Madani has strength when Congress is in power. He has no strength when BJP is in power. He will be arrested if he crosses the limits, Sarma said. He warned that if unknown people occupied lands in forests, village grazing reserves and professional grazing reserves, they would be evicted. He said the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind delegation by now had a fair idea about it. Samujjal Bhattacharya, chief advisor to All Assam Students Union, called Madani the protector of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and fundamentalists. Madanis activities are anti-national. He is now visiting places in Assam. The government should take strong action against those who are working in favour of illegal Bangladeshis and fundamentalists, and against the nation, Bhattacharya demanded. Without taking the name of Delhi-based activist and former Planning Commission member Syeda Hameed, he said a woman had visited Assam recently and spoken in favour of the Bangladeshis, and then after returning to New Delhi, she spoke very badly about Assam. Since the time of the Assam Agitation (of 1980s), some people have been trying to hatch a conspiracy and foment tension on the Bangladeshi issue, Bhattacharya further stated.

'Lacks empathy': Congress slams PM Modi as he leaves for '35th' trip abroad since start of Manipur ethnic conflict Officials remained tight-lipped but an MLA of the ruling BJP almost confirmed PM Modis visit. The PMs visit is almost confirmed, he told TNIE on Tuesday wishing not to be named. This will be PM Modis first visit to the state since an ethnic conflict between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo tribals, and resultant violence left more than 250 people dead and around 60,000 others displaced. It has been months that the violence has subsided but the State has remained ethnically partitioned even after more than two years since the violence broke out. The Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo tribals still cannot go to each others areas. Earlier, the Congress slammed PM Modi umpteen times for not visiting Manipur despite the massive destruction in the State. Meanwhile, the PM will also visit Assam. He is likely to visit Mizoram as well to inaugurate the 51.38-km BairabiSairang railway line. Nagaland: Developing written grammar for 18 recognised languages
GUWAHATI: The Nagaland University, a central university, is collaborating with the Nagaland government to develop written grammar for the 18 recognised languages of the state. While Naga languages have been taught in schools for decades, none have had dedicated written grammars for the teaching-learning process. The project between Nagaland University and Nagalands Directorate of School Education seeks to provide structured pedagogical grammars for inclusion in school textbooks from Class 5 to Class 12, ensuring alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative will address the gap by systematically documenting grammarincluding parts of speech, tense and aspect, phrase and clause structures, and tonewhile enriching vocabulary and clarifying orthography where needed. This long-term effort not only strengthens NEP 2020s vision of multilingual education but also addresses the risks of language marginalisation by ensuring each Naga language is valued as much as dominant languages, the university said. The grammar developed under this initiative will be incorporated into school textbooks alongside prose, poetry, and translation, under the supervision of the State Council of Educational Research and Training and the Nagaland Board of School Education. Teacher training programmes are planned to support the smooth integration of grammar teaching in classrooms, beginning with refresher courses hosted by the Nagaland University. The project is led by Dr Mimi Kevichsa Ezung, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Tenyidie, Nagaland University. Tenyidie is the standardised form of the Angami language spoken by the Angami community of the state as well as the community speech of nine other tribes, collectively falling under the Tenyimia Group. This endeavour is not merely an academic exercise but a cultural mission one that seeks to preserve, strengthen, and promote the linguistic heritage of our people, said Prof Jagadish K Patnaik, Vice Chancellor of the Nagaland University. It would not have been possible without the dedication of our faculty members, scholars, language experts and community elders who have worked together in a spirit of collaboration. It is also a step towards fulfilling the vision of the NEP 2020, he further stated. Ezung said, At a time when Naga languages are undergoing standardisation, developing pedagogical grammars is crucial. It ensures consistency and regularity in writing and in speech while instilling pride in ones mother tongue. This initiative is not just about textbooks, but it is also about preserving identity, culture, and indigenous knowledge.
Space science turns into classroom reality in Assams BTR
GUWAHATI: Childrens curiosity about the space is unbounded, and to channel it into practical learning, Assams Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government has turned space science into a classroom reality by setting up space labs in 15 hard-to-reach government-run schools under the Bodoland Space Education Programme. Each of them will also cater to the students of adjoining areas. Earlier, the BTR government had signed an agreement with New Delhi-based Vyomika Space Academy, which is an ISRO Space Tutor partner, to supply curriculum, training, and hardware, including model launch vehicles, telescopes, and more. Initially, the plan was to set up 10 labs in 10 schools two schools each in the five districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri falling under the BTR. Five more labs were set up in five other schools in due course after receiving a positive response from students. Nilutpal Kashyap, Officer on Special Duty (Education), BTR, told this newspaper the space labs have dummy rockets, satellites and students have already learnt how to make dummy robotics and drones by using materials, including cardboard. We have the 15 space labs in remote villages. Six of them are functional. We could not start the functioning of the remaining nine labs as the model code of conduct is in force (in view of September 22 elections to autonomous Bodoland Territorial Council). Schools nearby can also avail of space exposure and learning there, Kashyap said. He said that in each of the 15 schools, a science teacher was trained to run the space labs and they would be trained further. In March, Kashyap had taken 10 students two each from the five districts to the Space Applications Centre, Ahmedabad on an exposure trip. Its Director, Nilesh M Desai, liked the initiative of the BTR government so much that he visited the region to see how it was being implemented. The BTR government has also tied up with Bengaluru-based Agastya International Foundation as it seeks to promote science education by removing childrens fear in science and mathematics. The foundation has vans with science models. They take the vans to schools. They also have labs-on-bikes to cover areas where four-wheelers cannot go. The foundation imparts practical knowledge in the basic concept of science, Kashyap said. He said Chirang, which recorded the worst pass percentage in the Class 10 Board till 2022, had the best pass percentage in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Baksa is No 1 in arts while Tamulpur is No 1 in science (streams), he added.

MLA seeks law to prohibit Devil worship, Nagaland House to discuss matter on September 2
GUWAHATI: The Nagaland Assembly will hold a discussion on the matter Prohibition of Satanic Worship in Nagaland on September 2, the first day of a two-day session. Naga People's Front (NPF) Legislature Party Leader Kuzholuzo Nienu had earlier written to Assembly Speaker Sharingain Longkumer seeking a discussion on the matter and a law prohibiting and preventing Satanic/Devil worship. As a Christian state, we need to upkeep our religion and be a faithful believer and follower of God Almighty. It is truly shocking to see our younger generation embracing Satanic/Devil worship openly, which is a total disregard to our religion and the teaching of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, Nienu had written in his letter. He mentioned that Nagaland carried the banner of Nagaland for Christ and made a covenant to stand by the ideals and principles as laid down in the Bible. Therefore, I urge your good office for a discussion and also for passing a resolution to enact laws prohibiting and preventing Satanic/Devil worship within the territory of Nagaland, he urged the Speaker. Assembly secretary in-charge Khruohituonuo Rio in a letter addressed to Nienu said the Speaker had admitted the notice under Rule 54 of the Rules and Procedure and Conduct of Business in Nagaland Legislative Assembly on the subject matter 'Prohibition of Satanic Worship in Nagaland'. The subject matter will be taken up after the Question Hour on Tuesday, the 2nd September, 2025, the letter to the NPF legislator further read. Nienu told TNIE on Sunday that young Naga boys and girls were being lured by a certain group of people, including Nagas, with Rs 1 lakh or a motorcycle for Satanic worship. When they started worshipping the Satan, they acted very strange. We could even see them going out of the window or the ventilation, which is unexplainable, Nienu said. According to him, these acts, occurring in five districts, have nothing to do with idol worship, Buddhism, Jainism or Hinduism. He said elements luring the youngsters were active in Nagaland.
Suspected militants kill Assam Thadou community leader who took part in Manipur peace meeting
GUWAHATI: Suspected militants killed a Thadou community leader from Assam who took part in a peace meeting in Manipur capital Imphal on August 6. Nehkam Jomhao (59), chairman of the Thadou Literature Society, Assam, was abducted from his residence at Chonghang Veng in Manja area of Karbi Anglong district on Saturday at around 7:30 pm and killed later. The police said six persons were arrested on Saturday night in connection with the incident. He was murdered although the body is yet to be recovered. The arrested persons confessed to us about killing him, Karbi Anglong Superintendent of Police Sanjib Saikia told TNIE . He added that the police were conducting an investigation to ascertain the motive behind the murder. A historic meeting was held between the Thadou Inpi Manipur, which is the apex civil society organisation representing the Thadou tribe, and some Meitei organisations of Manipur in Imphal toward restoring peace in the ethnic violence-hit state. That was for the first time since the conflict that any Thadou had stepped into the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley. Jomhao was part of the Thadou delegation that met the Meitei leaders. The Thadous too were affected by the conflict. The Thadou Students Association-General Headquarters said it was a cold-blooded murder. Nehkam Jomhao became a target because of his courageous participation in the Imphal Peace Meeting. His stand for dialogue and reconciliation displeased Kuki militants and anti-peace elements who opposed peace and understanding. This cowardly and barbaric act took away a visionary leader who believed in harmony and the dignity of all communities, the student organisation said in a statement. The statement further stated that the deceased was a guardian of Thadou language, literature, and cultural identity whose untiring efforts in cultural preservation, and peace-building left an indelible mark on the Thadou tribe. His death is not merely an individual loss, but a collective tragedy for the Thadou community. In him, we have lost a fatherly figure and a martyr whose sacrifice will forever be remembered as a turning point in our struggle for justice, peace, and identity, the statement added.

Assam pushes back 33 Bangladeshi infiltrators as part of intensified crackdown
GUWAHATI: Assam has pushed back 33 illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators as part of its ongoing drive against illegal immigration. In a post on X, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that 33 new infiltrators had been pushed back to their country of origin. However, he did not specify the date of the pushback. He further warned that the state governments efforts to tackle infiltration would be further intensified in the coming days. Later in the day, the Chief Minister addressed the media, explaining that the pushback was taking place on two fronts: one targeting individuals who arrived after 1971 and were living in the state illegally, and the other focusing on new infiltrators. Under the Immigrants Expulsion Act, we are empowered to push back any foreigner who came post-1971. We will keep increasing our efforts to push back people, he said. The Assam Accord, signed between the central government and the All Assam Students Union in 1985 at the conclusion of the six-year-long Assam Agitation, mandates that immigrants who arrived after March 24, 1971, should be detected and deported. Over the past few months, the Assam government has pushed back several hundred Bangladeshi illegal immigrants and infiltrators.
Assam to bring home revered textile Vrindavani Vastra from British Museum for exhibition
GUWAHATI: Assam is likely to get the revered 16th-century Vrindavani Vastra from the British Museum in London for exhibition in 2027. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Saturday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the British Museum had, for the first time, come forward to loan the Vrindavani Vastra to Assam for 18 months, subject to the fulfilment of conditions. The Vrindavani Vastra is a silk textile, woven in Assam under the guidance of saint-reformer Srimanta Sankardeva. It depicts scenes from the life of Lord Krishna. It is believed that pieces of Vrindavani Vastra were taken to Tibet during the 17th/18th century and collected by British explorers during the 19th/20th century. Later, the India Museum acquired them and transferred them to the British Museum. Sarma said efforts made in the past to bring it back proved futile, but now, the British Museum expressed its willingness to loan it.That textile is in the British Museum and some other museums in Europe. We tried to bring it back in the past on loan so the people of Assam could see it. Finally, the British Museum has written to us that if we can construct a museum as per the required environmental standards, they will give us the textile on loan for 18 months in 2027, Sarma said. The Assam government has allotted a plot of land in Guwahati to the JSW Group, which has assured to build the museum under its corporate social responsibility initiative and give it back to the government. Action has started and I believe we will be able to bring back the Vrindavani Vastra so the people of Assam can see it and offer their bhakti to Lord Krishna, Sarma said, but added that it would be a long process considering that the Assam government would be required to fulfil several conditions. The President of India will have to write to the British Museum that the textile will be returned within the timeframe and without causing any damage. It is called a sovereign guarantee. The issue involves several processes, and without cooperation from the Government of India, we cannot go ahead, Sarma said. He also said that the state government is working closely with the British Museum as well as the JSW Group, and collaborating with the Indian ambassador to Britain. The British Museum will give us the design of our museum. If the cost of construction goes beyond the JSW Groups budget, we may have to fund it partially. We are confident. Chances of bringing the textile back have increased by 90 per cent, Sarma said, adding the British Museum has plans to exhibit the textile also in Mumbai.

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday announced that Assam's leadership after next year's Assembly elections would be on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and not on a leader who protects infiltrators and visits Pakistan frequently. Assam cannot be led by a leader who protects infiltrators. Assam cannot be led by a leader who often visits Pakistan. Assam's leadership cannot be given to people who allow infiltrators to encroach upon land. Assams leadership cannot be given to the corrupt. Assams leadership will be on (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi and Himanta Biswa Sarma, Shah said addressing the 'NDA Panchayat Pratinidhi Sammelan' in Guwahati. He did not take the name of the leader but his obvious reference was to Assam Congress president and deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi. Gogoi, the Jorhat MP, is pitted against Sarma as Assam braces for Assembly elections. Shah said, A major achievement of the NDA government in Assam is that it reclaimed over 1.19 lakh hectares of encroached land. Should we not clear land encroached upon by infiltrators? But Gaurav Gogoi is opposing it. I want to tell him, oppose it as much as you can, the BJP government will clear every inch of land encroached upon by the infiltrators. He added that the lands of the Satras (neo-Vaishnavite monasteries), encroached upon when the Congress was in power, had been cleared by the government.Assam's biggest problem was child marriage involving infiltrators. Then, the Himanta Biswa Sarma government launched a drive, putting those who married minor girls, behind bars, Shah said. In his speech, he also threw light on how the Modi government restored peace in Northeast by signing various accords with insurgent groups which saw over 10,000 youth lay down arms and join the mainstream, and the unprecedented development that the region witnessed in the past 11 years under the NDA. PM Modi Ji started a new era of development in Northeast. In Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma ensured that development reached every village and every individual. The result is that the BJP is winning here time and again, Shah said. Earlier in the day, he inaugurated the newly-constructed 'Brahmaputra Wing' of Raj Bhavan, Assam, marking a significant milestone in the architectural and administrative progress of the states seat of governance.
Maratha quota leader begins indefinite protest at Azad Maidan demanding OBC inclusion
MUMBAI: Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange Patil on Friday began an indefinite protest at Azad Maidan, joined by thousands of demonstrators, to press his demand for the inclusion of the Maratha community in the Other Backwards Category (OBC). Manoj Jarange Patil stated that he is ready to face a bullet or any consequences but will not leave Mumbai until the demand for Maratha inclusion in the OBC category is fulfilled. He emphasised that the Maratha community protesters are willing to cooperate with the state government, but they expect reciprocity. He said, We want a sustainable reservation, not one that can be challenged and overturned in court. Maratha and Kunbi are the same, and marriages also take place between these two communities. The marriage between Maratha and Kunbi is not called an inter caste marriage but a same caste marriage. If Kunbis are given the OBC reservation, then Marathas should also be given it. And the state government has the power to do that. Maratha quota stir: Activist Jarange reaches Pune ahead of Mumbai protest From Friday morning, an unprecedented number of people arrived in local trains to join the protest at Azad Maidan. The protesters brought their own food and prepared to stay in Mumbai for an extended period. Some of them even cooked on the footpaths. Despite continuous rain in the city, the protesters remained at Azad Maidan, parking their vehicles nearby and constructing makeshift shelters. The protesters vehicles caused major traffic congestion, particularly in South Mumbai. The Eastern Expressway and Atal Setu also experienced severe jams. However, the demonstrators opened the way for ambulances. They raised slogans to encourage each other and to press their demand. Reacting to the protest, Uddhav Thackeray said, It is the right of the protesters to come to the capital of Maharashtra to press their demand; they cannot go to Surat or Guwahati. Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra, so, naturally, the protesters will come here. Now, it is the responsibility of the state government to address their issue. We are not in power now. Rohit Pawar, NCP SP MLA, criticised the state government for preventing the protesters from accessing food at Azad Maidan. He said, Police forced many food stalls to shut down, which caused difficulties for the protesters in getting food and water nearby. It is the responsibility of the state to provide everything, but the state here is interested in cutting all key supplies to the protesters.

It is a matter of pride that 27 countries honoured Modi Ji by conferring their highest civilian award on him. Prolonged torrential rains trigger waterlogging, landslide alerts in Guwahati
GUWAHATI: Torrential rains in Guwahati on Thursday caused artificial floods in several localities, severely affecting the daily activities of people. The downpour, which followed Wednesdays heavy rainfall, also inundated major roads, disrupting vehicular traffic. People, including office-goers, were stranded for hours, much to their woes. Some were seen in viral videos wading through knee-deep water, while quite a few vehicles broke down on the roads. The rains left stretches of National Highway 27 submerged. The situation was no better on the stretch between Khanapara in Guwahati and Jorabat on the Meghalaya border. Vehicles are required to pass through Jorabat for travel between Guwahati and Shillong. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the next 24 hours. The weather pattern suggests that rainfall with thunderstorm and lightning (up to 6 cm/24 hours) is very likely to occur at most places of the city along with intense spell of rainfall (2-3 cm/hour) in the coming 24 hours which may aggravate waterlogging, slow vehicular movement, and increase the risk of localised landslides in vulnerable pockets, the state government warned through a statement. The statement also mentioned that city authorities were closely monitoring the situation and emergency response systems were being kept on alert. In view of the situation, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) requested people to take necessary precautions and remain vigilant. It urged daily commuters and long-distance travellers to plan their schedules accordingly and avoid unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas were advised to stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides. The public is also urged to stay tuned to official weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities to ensure safety during this prolonged spell of rain. The status of the situation would be updated by ASDMA from time to time for general awareness, the statement further said.
Peace reigns as parties gear up for Bodo council polls
GUWAHATI: Unlike in the past, an atmosphere of peace prevails in Assam's Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) this election season. Political parties are gearing up for the September 22 elections to the 40-member autonomous Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), billed as the semifinal of Assembly polls in the state due early next year. The BTR, which witnessed deaths and destruction during three major ethnic riots, went to polls in the past three decades under the shadow of the gun amid an insurgency movement. Multiple peace accords were signed but peace was temporary. In 2020, a concerted effort for permanent peace led to the signing of historic BTR accord between central government, All Bodo Students' Union and four insurgent groups. The accord has stood the test of time. Over the past nearly five years, there has not been a single major incident of violence in the BTR, which comprises the five districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur and Udalguri and is administered by the BTC. The BTR pact ushered in peace but the wounds of violence remained. To heal them and remove mistrust among communities, BTC Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro, considered an architect of the BTR accord, had launched the Bodoland Happiness Mission (BHM) in 2022, taking a leaf out of the book of adjoining Bhutan's Gross National Happiness Index. The initiative aimed to build resilient communities, capable of moving beyond violence, by fostering mental and emotional wellbeing while offering training in mindfulness, emotional intelligence and peace-building. The BTR is home to 26 communities. The mission encouraged their convergence for dialogues. Soon, an all-language word-book and a museum-cum-research centre for the communities were initiated, reflecting the spirit of inclusivity. These interventions made people feel better emotionally considering that they grew up in an environment of protracted conflict, witnessing mass internal displacement, friends turning rebels to wage an armed struggle, deaths and destruction. Tapan Bara, a non-Bodo affected by the scourge of violence, said he had seen houses on fire and people struggling to recover from pain and devastation. Time rolled by but I was still searching for happiness. The search took me away from myself. After attending a BHM session, I realised that happiness is within me, Bara, who is in his thirties, said. Prabhat Chandra Sutradhar, senior advisor to All BTR Sutradhar Sanmilan, said he gained a lot of knowledge in education and spirituality by attending a BHM session. I want this knowledge to be passed on to villages and towns across the BTR for happiness, he said.

Adis of Arunachal celebrate Solung festival with zero-waste, eco-friendly revival of traditions
GUWAHATI: Plastic was replaced with bamboo and toko leaves, apong (rice beer) was served in traditional epum (pot) using ejuk (ladle) and a hand-painted cloth banner replaced flex as the Adis in Arunachal Pradesh celebrated the Solung festival in Pangin village this year. It was both a cultural revival and a zero-waste celebration, made possible through collaboration among the Siang District Tourism, Kalimpong-based organisation Muhaan and locals. Recognised as a clean model village, Pangin showed yet again how tradition and sustainability can go hand in hand. The village became the stage for a festival that not only honoured age-old customs but also redefined what a modern community celebration could look like. The serving of apong by using epum and ejuk restored authenticity to the experience. Local artist Samuel Gao hand-painted a cloth banner with cultural motifs, replacing plastic flex. The villagers carved out over 100 bamboo mugs for visitors and locals, replacing plastic cups. Even the stalls and the gate were crafted from bamboo and toko leaves, giving the celebration a natural and traditional aesthetic. Binnyat, a ritual for bumper harvest performed on the second day of the three-day festival held from August 21-23, was performed in a more ritualistic and collective way. An open museum showcased Adi life, from agriculture and attire to mithun and traditional weapons. Traditional games such as tug of war and archery were revived, while eco-workshops in paper-making and eco-printing by well-known artist Ushimi Linggi engaged children and women alike. The festival was also about bridging generations and opening doors. The youth of Pangin showcased their talents in dance and music during the Solung musical evening, while elders shared rituals and stories. Tourists joined in, giving the community valuable experience in hosting guests and offering visitors an authentic glimpse into Adi culture. Local schools sent students to learn not just about heritage but also about zero waste practices. Niyang Pertin, Circle Officer-cum-District Tourism Officer, Siang, reflected: Over the years, we saw our festivals becoming more commercial, losing the depth of our culture and identity. We wanted to bring Solung back to its roots, to remind ourselves that sustainability has always been part of our way of life. And for this, she added, the real credit goes to the people of Pangin and Muhaan. Their commitment, enthusiasm and sense of ownership made this vision possible. To translate this vision into action, Muhaan was roped in, drawing from its work in community tourism. Its expertise in weaving together culture, ecology and livelihoods made it possible to create a festival that was both authentic and environmentally responsible. Solung 2025 was not just a celebration but a living story of culture revived, identity reaffirmed and sustainability celebrated, with Pangin village leading the way for others to follow, Pertin said.
