NIA arrests three insurgents for deadly 2024 attack on security forces in strife-torn Manipur

NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested three insurgents in a case related to a deadly attack on security forces that killed two police commandos and injured several others in ethnic violence-hit Manipur last year, officials said on Sunday. The three men, along with their associates, planned, conspired and executed the attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post and security forces at Moreh in Tengnoupal district on January 17, 2024, they said. Among the arrested accused is Thangminlen Mate, a resident of Tengnoupal district and member of the Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal (KIT) insurgent group, an official statement said. He played a key role in orchestrating and carrying out the attack, it said. He was apprehended on May 19, 2025, from Silchar, Assam, and produced before the NIA court in Guwahati, which remanded him to custody until May 28. He is currently lodged in Guwahati Central Jail under judicial custody, the statement issued by the probe agency said. The other accused, Kamginthang Gangte, a member of the Kuki National Army (KNA), and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen, associated with the village volunteers' group in Churachandpur district, were arrested from Imphal on June 6, the statement said. They were presented before the duty magistrate, who granted a transit remand until June 9 for their transfer to the NIA special court in Guwahati. The duo was part of the team that executed the deadly attack, it added. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in the violence between the Imphal valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023. The Centre imposed President's Rule in Manipur on February 13 this year after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned. The violence started after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status. Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribal Nagas and Kukis constitute a little over 40 per cent and reside in the hill districts. Assam CM warns NSA action for 'pro-Pakistan' posts, 11 held so far

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that three more persons were apprehended for their alleged pro-Pakistan stand in the wake of the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, taking the total number of such arrests in the northeastern state to 11. He also said that if required, these people will be booked under the National Security Act (NSA). There are no similarities between Bharat and Pakistan. The two countries are enemy nations and we must remain like that, Sarma told reporters on the sidelines of a programme at the state BJP office here. He said that a leader of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti was apprehended on Friday for his 'anti-India comment' and anyone who takes such a stand will be arrested. If required, we will impose provisions of NSA on them. We are examining all (social media) posts, and action will be taken against those who, we feel, are anti-national, the chief minister asserted. Sarma, in a post on X, said one person was held in the Sribhumi district on Friday night. He said the accused had posted 'Pakistan Zindabad' on Facebook. In another post on social media, he said two more persons have been arrested on similar charges in Cachar district. Cachar Police has arrested two more individuals for posting content supporting Pakistan on social media, he said. Two persons, including opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam, were apprehended on Thursday, while six more arrests across the state were made on Friday, Sarma had said. Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam, he said in a post on social media on Friday. Of the persons arrested earlier, two are from Silchar in Cachar district and one each from Hailakandi, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Barpeta and Biswanath, he added. Terrorists struck Baisaran, a prime tourist location in Pahalgam in south Kashmir on Tuesday, killing at least 26 people, mostly tourists, and injuring several others.

Assam cops arrest seven over alleged offensive social media posts on Pahalgam terror attack

GUWAHATI: The Assam Police on Friday arrested seven individuals for allegedly posting offensive content on social media in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. Bania, who serves as the district secretary of Satra Mukti Sangram Parishad, a students' body, was among those arrested. Hussain is a journalist, while Bahauddin is a student at Assam University in Silchar. Mazumder is reportedly a lawyer. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that the individuals had been arrested for what he claimed was directly or indirectly promoting the cause of Pakistan on social media. He added that further arrests were expected as part of an ongoing crackdown. Assam will not tolerate any individual who, directly or indirectly, supports or defends Pakistan in connection with the heinous attack in Pahalgam, Biswa Sarma said. Meanwhile, an MLA from the opposition All India United Democratic Front, Aminul Islam, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly linking the BJP-led central government to the Pahalgam attack. In Meghalaya, police arrested a 30-year-old man for praising the terror attack. The accused, Simon Shylla from East Khasi Hills, had reportedly posted anti-national comments on Facebook. The United Meitei-Pangal Committee, an organisation representing Meitei Pangal Muslims in Manipur, condemned the Pahalgam attack and called for urgent and decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Terrorism has no place in a civilised society. Such violence only weakens the fabric of our diverse nation and attempts to derail peace and communal harmony, the organisation stated. As a mark of solidarity with the victims and to condemn the attack, the organisation urged attendees of Fridays prayers to wear a black ribbon. Let this be a symbol of our collective grief, unity, and firm stand against terror and violence in any form, the organisation added.

Recounting the horror, Professor Debashish Bhattacharjee, head of the Bengali Department at the Assam University in Silchar, said he had seen death from very near. He went to Kashmir accompanied by his wife and son, and had included Baisaran in their holiday itinerary. We were soaking in the beauty of the place when suddenly the gunfire erupted. I tried to save my life by lying down under a tree. I heard people chanting la ilaha illallah (the first of six kalimas which are foundational Islamic declarations). I too chanted it, Bhattacharjee said. One person was in a dilemma whether or not to lie down. He was shot in no time. He fell down and his blood splattered onto my body. When a gunman came to me and asked what I was murmuring, I tried to chant la ilaha illallah quite loudly. He soon left the place, Bhattacharjee further stated. Wont allow any anti-Waqf protest: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said his government would not allow any protest or demonstration on the streets of the state against the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act. The matter is in the Supreme Court. If anyone has anything to say in its favour or against it, he or she can approach the apex court. It will be properly discussed there by the judges, Sarma told the media. If some people take to the roads opposing the Act, others supporting it will also take to the roads. There will be a fight then. But we dont want any fight or conflict in Assam. We all must maintain our brotherly relationship and take the state forward, Sarma said. He said he had nothing to say if somebody was opposing or supporting the Act, but nobody would be allowed to hit the streets. Asked if he will invite the leaders of All Assam Minorities Students Union (AAMSU) for talks, the chief minister reiterated that the organisation could go to the Supreme Court. Last Wednesday, scores of protestors were detained by the police in different parts of central and western Assam when they were heading to Guwahati to stage a demonstration against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The AAMSU was the organiser of the demonstration. Then, on Sunday, a rally against the Act turned violent in southern Assams Silchar town in Cachar district. The protestors had resorted to stone pelting when the police tried to disperse them.

Punjab gangster-cum-drug lord Jaggu Bhagwanpuria shifted to Silchar jail in Assam

CHANDIGARH: Gangster-cum-drug lord Jagdeep Singh alias Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, an accused in Punjab singer Sidhu Moosewalas murder case has been shifted to Silchar jail in Assam from Central Jail at Bathinda. He has been detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB ) under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act. He is the first gangster from the State who has been detained under this act. Sources said that on March 22, a joint team of the NCB and Punjab police escorted Bhagwanpuria from Bathinda to Chandigarh under heavy security cover. He was flown to Assam via Delhi and Kolkata. He was lodged in the central jail on March 23 at Silchar. A four-member NCB team over saw the transfer of this gangster. This transfer of Singh took place following a directive dated March 21, from the Joint Secretary (PIT-NDPS). Thus, the NCB carried out his immediate transfer from high-security Bathinda to Central Jail at Silchar in Assam. As per his dossier, some 128 cases are against him, including 12 under the NDPS Act. Intelligence reports indicate his involvement with Pakistan-based suppliers and international networks in Canada and the US, underscoring the transnational nature of his activities. Sources said the PIT-NDPS case was registered in Bhagwanpuria after a detailed investigation in which it was established with evidence how he was allegedly running his operations and orchestrating drug trafficking, extortion besides violent activities from behind bars. He was also using smuggled mobiles as he was issuing instructions and talking via encrypted communication to coordinate supply chains through an extensive network of operatives. Statements from some of his co-accused have further corroborated the evidence. Singh who hails from Bhagwanpur village under the jurisdiction of Kot Surat police station in Gurdaspur district is a notorious gangster and smuggler involved in cross-border narcotics smuggling. As in many cases, he is also involved with illegal weapons (pistols and revolvers.) This is the fourth detention from Punjab under the stringent Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act which allows drug traffickers to be jailed for up to one year without bail. Last year in August, the NCB detained three other alleged drug lords from the state and shifted them to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam. The three individuals detained are Jaspal Singh alias Goldy, Akshay Chhabra and Balwinder Singh alias Billa Havellian. Sources said that these drug smugglers are running drug syndicates from inside jails in Punjab. This move seeks to break his powerful grip on criminal networks flourishing in the state and nearby regions.

After thoroughly inspecting the vehicle, they discovered 102.39 kg of methamphetamine tablets hidden in the rear toolbox and cabin. The two individuals on board were immediately taken into custody. Following this, the team carried out a follow-up operation and arrested a third suspect, who was believed to be the receiver of the drugs. A four-wheeler used for drug trafficking was also recovered, and all three individuals were later arrested. The statement further revealed that the suspected source of the drugs was Moreh, and investigations are ongoing to identify others involved in the case. Shah: Government unsparing in punishing drug traffickers On the same day, NCB officers from the Guwahati Zone, acting on a tip-off, intercepted an SUV at the AssamMizoram border near Silchar. During their inspection, they found 7.48 kg of methamphetamine tablets concealed inside the spare tyre of the vehicle. The occupant of the SUV was taken into custody and later arrested. The MHA confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with this case after their involvement in the drug syndicate was established. Authorities are now working to uncover the international and interstate connections of this trafficking network. The North Eastern Region remains one of the most vulnerable areas in India for drug trafficking due to its geographical location. PATNA: Deepali Shah, a Kendriya Vidyalaya teacher previously posted in Bihars Jehanabad district, has reportedly left the state after being summoned by district police for questioning over a viral video in which she allegedly made controversial remarks about Bihar residents. Deepali was suspended by Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan after Lok Janshakti Party (RV) MP Shambhavi Chaudhary complained against her for using abusive language against Biharis. ASI resumes underwater explorations in Dwarka after 20 years; women archaeologists to join team for first time

NEW DELHI: After two decades, the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) has resumed underwater explorations off the coast of Dwarka in Gujarat. The Additional Director General-Archaeology (ADG-A) of the Survey Professor Alok Tripathi is leading a team of five archaeologists who are working on the project. For the first time, the exploration team comprises women archaeologists. The fresh attempt to study underwater archaeology in the state assumes significance as last year in February Prime Minister Narendra Modi went scuba diving off the Panchkui beach coast to perform prayers at the ancient city of Dwarka belonging to Lord Krishna, which is now submerged. Tripathi told The New Indian Express that explorations would be conducted in a phased manner and in the first phase, locations are being identified for the research. Based on findings in the first phase, further activities will be planned and scope of explorations will be expanded accordingly, he said. The ASI has accorded permission for a year to undertake investigation. The other team members of the ASI are Director (Excavations and Explorations) HK Nayak, Assistant Superintending Archaeologist Aparajita Sharma, Poonam Vind, and Rajkumari Barbina. The project started on Monday. The team identified an area off Gomati creek for the initial investigations. The team dived to understand bathymetry of the area and other remains of archaeological interest, said an official. Officials privy to the project said that underwater exploration in Dwarka is part of the renewed Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW) of ASI, which has recently been revived to undertake offshore surveys and investigations in Dwarka and Bet Dwarka. The unit has been at the forefront of underwater archaeological research since the 1980s. Since 2001, the wing has been conducting explorations at different sites such as Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Dwarka (Gujarat), Loktak Lake (Manipur), and Elephanta Island (Maharashtra). Archaeologists of UAW have also collaborated with the Indian Navy (IN) and other government organizations for the study and protection of underwater cultural heritage. Tripathi, who is widely recognized for his expertise in underwater archaeology, especially in the excavation and surveying of archaeological materials submerged underwater, has also planned to rope in young archeologists for the project. We will hold training programmes for young professionals and enthusiasts who are having keen interest in underwater archeology and involve them, said Tripathi. In 2023, Tripathi led the survey of the disputed Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi after the Supreme Court order. He has also served as the head of the Department of History at Assam University, Silchar. Tripathi also carried out offshore and onshore excavations at Dwarka from 2005 to 2007 when the coastal areas were examined during low tide, where sculptures and stone anchors were discovered. Based on those explorations, underwater excavations were carried out, officials said. The ongoing underwater investigations mark a significant step in ASIs mission to safeguard Indias rich underwater cultural heritage and will be a milestone in maritime archaeology studies in India, an ASI official added.
