75th I-Day: Kerala CM rejects Oppn demand for sitting Spl midnight Assembly session

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has turned down Leader of Opposition in Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan's request to hold a special sitting of the assembly to commemorate the 75 years of Inidia's Independence. Satheesan, on August 5, had suggested for either a midnight sitting on August 14 or a day closer to it, but Pinarayi Vijayan is understood to have informed him now that the state has the practice of several cabinet ministers taking the salute at the 13 district headquarters of the state. Hence, all of them will not be able to make it to the midnight session together. The Congress-led opposition is debating the best course of action in response to Vijayan's response because he did not provide any other viable dates. On Friday, the opposition Congress-led UDF urged Kerala's Speaker M. B. Rajesh and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to call a special midnight session of the state Assembly on August 14 to commemorate the nation's 75th anniversary of independence. V D Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly, sent a letter to the Chief Minister and Speaker recommending the same. In the letter, he cited the House's prior actions in calling such special sessions to mark the 25th and 40th anniversaries of the nation's independence, respectively, on August 14, 1972, and August 13, 1987. Satheesan also wished for the Assembly to adopt a resolution pledging joint action to uphold the fundamental tenets of the constitution, including secularism and democracy, and to rekindle the heroic memory of the freedom struggle. 25 Years Of Pardes EXCLUSIVE: I kept telling Shah Rukh Khan in every scene and song that he has to avoid his compelling image of a romantic hero Subhash Ghai

Pardes completes 25 years today. The film with an unforgettable soundtrack starred Shah Rukh Khan, marked the debut of Mahima Chaudhry and Apurva Agnihotri and told an interesting tale that touched the hearts of the viewers. Subhash Ghai was its director and producer whose expert execution also played an important role in its success. As Pardes celebrates its 25th anniversary, Subhash Ghai explosively spoke to Bollywood Hungama about the film, Shah Rukh Khans nuanced performance and a lot more. Was Shah Rukh Khan the first choice? As per IMDb trivia, you met him in 1991 and was not happy with his attitude. However, it is claimed that things changed two years later when you saw a more human side to him as you saw him taking care of his wife Gauri and his parents. Is this true? If yes, would you like to talk about it? At times you get to know a person and artist better in a creative space. The same for Shah Rukh Khan. Once you meet him and get to know him, you will know he has a very good soul and is a humble person inside out. I have known him for years now and hence, I can vouch for it. Everytime I see Pardes , I am amazed by Shah Rukh Khans performance. He is in love and shows he isnt. Even his act in the song Yeh Dil is so nuanced and heartwarming. Could you tell us what was the brief given by you to him that translated into such a fine performance? I had warned Shah Rukh from the script stage itself that it's a two-dimensional character for not being in love with the girl and his constant inner struggle not to get zapped in her love despite respecting and loving the girl sincerely till the climax. I kept telling him in every scene and song that he must avoid his compelling image of a romantic hero to justify my character of Arjun. He had a tough time doing so, but he nailed it. He loves challenges and comes out with flying colours. Mahima got the Filmfare Award for Best Award and I feel that even Shah Rukh should have won the best actor award in Pardes for such a complex performance. He did get the Filmfare but for some other film ( Dil To Pagal Hai ). Pardes came just a week before Indias 50th Independence Day. Was it planned that way from the start, which is why you had the song I Love My India in the song? My patriotic feelings for India have always been strong since a very young age. So, it was a big coincidence that we were celebrating the 50th year of Independence during its release. My heart goes out to India, and we can only express our love for the nation only within the parameters of our profession or status. And I am just a writer-director who tends to do as it comes across. Like today, I am writing and composing a song for a video Ghar Ghar Tiranga to celebrate the 75th year of our independence. Isnt this a strange coincidence as well? The late Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji graced the music launch of Pardes in Delhi Since Pardes was about Indian culture, I had approached the late Arun Jaitley ji to invite Vajpayee ji to launch our music in Delhi and Shah Rukh Khan also joined us happily. It was very gracious of such a great leader like Bajpayee ji with his artistic taste to grace our event. I felt so happy. Did you ever visit cinema halls to check audience reaction? What was the reaction of the viewers, especially in the song I Love My Idea? Which scene got the maximum reaction from viewers? Oh Yes. I always visit cinema halls to check audience reactions. I either sit among the audience or stand near the door to watch how they are reacting to every scene and song of my film. During Pardes, I was so thrilled to see people clapping during the song I Love My India . The best reaction from the audience, which embarrassed me, was when I appeared on the screen singing I Love My India ! How does it feel that such a special film has completed 25 years and is still remembered fondly? I feel very happy that my baby is celebrating its silver jubilee and is getting the same love and respect from the audience as it got 25 years ago in cinema halls. I feel truly humbled. All said and done, films are made with utter passion through your soul, mind and heart. I have never treated films as projects. I have always executed them with lots of love and delivered them to the audience. Filmmaking is a business, but it is a business of the heart. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak has said that rioters can never respect tricolour. The work of distribution has been done by Akhilesh Yadav. Indias lone certified flag making unit is on an indefinite strike: Here's why

Protest The flag making unit in Hubballi had anticipated orders worth nearly eight times more than what the unit currently has. This is because of a recent decision by the Union government. Samrah Attar Anticipating the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign to commemorate 75 years of independent India, the Karnataka Khadi Gramodyoga Samyukta Sangha (KKGSS) at Bengeri in Hubballi began weaving the national flag with full throttle. Much to their dismay, the Central government amended the 2002 Flag Code of India, which now allows for the manufacturing of polyester flags. Earlier, the code allowed for only handwoven wool/cotton/silk khadi flags. But the new amendment allows not only machine made cloth for the flag, but also polyester material. Usually, around this time, the KKGSS is busy shipping out the tricolour for independence day. This July however, it has been busy protesting, as it has seen its orders dwindling. KKGSS along with the Congress began an indefinite protest in Hubballi from July 27. They're protesting against the amendment to the flag code which allows the use of polyester cloth along with khadi. Since the polyester material is fairly cheaper in comparison to khadi, KKGSS fears a shortage of orders and major loss in income. Following the Har Ghar Tiranga (Tricolour in every home), the unit rightly expected a surge of orders. However, the unit hasnt even received half the amount of orders that they otherwise receive. KKGSS is the only flag manufacturing unit recognised by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in the country. Their demand is simple, that the flag amendment dated December 30, 2021, be revoked. The amendment says, The Flag Code of India, 2002 was amended vide Order dated 30, December, 2021 and National Flag made of polyester or machine made Flag have been allowed. Now, the National Flag shall be made of hand spun and hand woven or machine made, cotton/polyester/wool/silk khadi bunting. The words 'machine made' and 'polyester' were not included in the 2002 code. Despite the amendment being passed in December, the amendment came to the notice of KKGSS only in March 2022. The Indian Bureau of Standards strictly regulates the handwoven and hand-stitched flags making. From its dimensions, weaving, folding and stitching, everything has been clearly specified and KKGSS abides by religiously since its BIS certification in 2004. The amendment will also mean that there will be no insistence on manufacturing them at a BIS certified unit. Former minister umashree visits the flag making unit The unit had anticipated at least Rs 8-10 crore worth of flags because of the independence day campaign. However, we have already observed a drop in orders and have only received orders worth Rs 1.2 crore. Earlier we received orders worth at least Rs 2.5 crore. We have written letters to the Chief Minister, Home Minister, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, and others after we learned of this amendment, but we have not received any response, the Secretary of KKGSS, Shivanand Mathapati told TNM. If the government wanted cheaper flags, they could have asked us to make flags out of single thread khadi cloth. Why was there a need to pass an amendment allowing polyester flags, we dont understand, he further added. KKGSS has units in different parts of the country. Around 600 workers are employed at the Bengeri unit in Hubballi. Combined with the Bagalkot unit, the KKGSS employs roughly 1,300 employees, all of whose livelihoods will now be impacted by the amendment. Most of the employees at KKGSS are women and while some employees such as the managers earn an average of Rs 10,000 a month, the weavers, spinners, and tailors earn daily wages and receive an average of Rs 4,000 a month. The Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav and Har Ghar Tiranga campaign had revived hope in the workers. Like every other business, the pandemic hit KKGSS hard as well. The unit suffered huge losses due to a lack of orders, resulting in earnings of the workers being reduced. The whole country knows the significance of khadi in this country, unlike the ordinary polyester. We have a history associated with it and a certain amount of respect comes with it. We do not know any other work, but were very proud of what we do because even if we earn less, we like working here. The government takes money from us in the form of several taxes such as GST and keeps raising the prices of essentials, all the while decreasing our salaries. We were very happy thinking the surge in orders will solve our financial burdens, but theyve put an axe on our feet by making this move, said Rehana Ballary, who has been working as a tailor with the KKGSS for 18 years. Annapurna Doddamani has also been employed with KKGSS for 18 years and works as a manager. Speaking to TNM, she said, Since polyester is cheaper, no one will buy our flags and we will all lose our livelihoods. Without work, many of us will also become homeless. The polyester flags will simply be thrown out after using it for one day, there is no respect associated with it. Despite the low wages, we work here because we feel that we are contributing to the country. According to Mathapathi, close to 500 people showed up for the protest. Former minister and actress, Umashree also attended the protest in solidarity. She spoke about how the demand for polyester flags is way too high to be fulfilled by Indian mills alone and the flags will have to be imported. The RSS supports this because their ideals about India are completely different, so why would they be concerned about the Indian flag? This was not what Gandhiji had envisioned for India. Our flag reflects India, and tampering with it hurts the sentiments of any real patriot, she told the media.
