JEE Main 2025 kicks off with mixed reactions
Hyderabad: The first day of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2025 began on a disciplined note in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. In Hyderabad, the exam centres saw a steady flow of candidates and three students were denied entry at LB Nagar centre after arriving 10 minutes late, highlighting the importance of punctuality and adherence to guidelines. The computer-based test, which is being held in two daily shifts from January 22 to 29 for Paper 1 (BE/BTech), tested students knowledge in mathematics, physics and chemistry. While the chemistry section was largely seen as straightforward, students found physics challenging, with many questions requiring deep conceptual understanding and advanced problem-solving skills. Mathematics posed a different challenge with its length, leaving little time for revisions. S. Sathwika, a student at the LB Nagar centre, described her experience as demanding. I managed to perform well overall, but the physics paper was particularly tough, with some questions requiring deep analysis. The maths section was also lengthy, which consumed most of my time, making it difficult to revise my answers, she shared. K. Ranjith, another candidate, found the paper moderately difficult and noted that chemistry was the easiest to handle. Meanwhile, Chaithra Reddy, who appeared for the exam at the Karmanghat centre, rated her performance as average but appreciated the manageability of the overall paper, which she was able to complete on time. Initial reactions from students and experts have pegged the overall difficulty level of the Day 1 paper as moderate to challenging, with a significant portion of questions derived from the Class 12 syllabus. Physics has emerged as the most difficult section for many candidates, while chemistry has been regarded as the most accessible. The first session of JEE Main 2025 will continue on January 23, 24, 28, and 29 for Paper 1 in two shifts: 9 am to 12 noon and 3 pm to 6 pm. Paper 2, meant for BArch and BPlanning aspirants, will be conducted on January 30 in a single afternoon shift.

Real-Time Flood Forecasting Mooted for Dam Safety
Hyderabad: Telangana has mooted real-time monitoring of rainfall and creation of advanced modelling and forecasting systems to improve flood forecasting and create gate operation protocols for dams on the Godavari and Krishna rivers. At a meeting of the State Dam Safety Organisation on Wednesday, officials proposed a committee comprising irrigation chief engineers from Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to take the idea forward. It also said that required studies could be carried out by IIT Hyderabad or IIT Roorkee. Gate operation protocols play a vital role in dam safety, especially during floods in rivers on which the dams are built, and if faulty or incorrect protocols are followed, can result in serious damage to structures. One of the many reasons that damages occurred to the Medigadda barrage of the Kaleshwaram project in Telangana, is believed to be absence of comprehensive flood forecasting and flood data and improper gate operation protocols. The SDSO meeting also discussed a study report on Gundlavadu dam in Khammam district which, the study found, needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. A study by the former director general of the Geological Survey of India M Raju found that the long-pending problems at the small dam, which serves an ayacut of around 3,000 acres in Wazeedu mandal of Khammam district, can only be solved if it is built afresh. A new dam can be built after the foundation, and hydrological issues, among others, are studied. The new structure can be built to replace the dilapidated and ruined dam structure. For many years, farmers in the area have been complaining that even during flood seasons when the dam is filled up, the water disappears leaving nothing for those dependent on it for irrigation.

The PIL against the building was filed by Tumma Omkar, president of the Tirumala Kshetra Protection Committee. He alleged inaction by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) despite illegal activities. Earlier, the court had ordered a halt to construction by the Peetham. During Wednesdays hearing, the TTD boards resolution to seize the Sharada Peetham building was discussed. The petitioners counsel argued that the building plan was violated, while the Peetham's counsel sought additional time to file a counter. The court granted this request and adjourned the hearing.

Sub-Classification of SCs, a Threat to National Unity: Ex-Union Minister
Kakinada: Raising the concerns over the division of Schedule Caste (SC) people, former union minister Chinta Mohan said that the classification to SCs will become a major threat to National Unity. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday he said that if the classification occurs to Schedule Castes reservations, the country will be divided in two like North India and South India in the next 20 years because North India has a major population of the Madiga community and South India is Mala community. The former union minister said that due to the classification of SCs in united Andhra Pradesh, the state had been divided into two states (AP and Telangana). Mohan demanded Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan should reveal his stand on division of SC reservations. He said that its since inception, Telugu Desam has been against the Schedule Castes and it always thinks of dividing Mala and Madiga communities. He said that the Supreme Court decision, consisting of seven judges on classification of SC reservations is not an order, but it is a disorder. Mohan said that Bahujan Samaj Party founder late Kanshi Ram toured 1700 mandals in combined Andhra Pradesh in 1994, aimed at uniting Schedule Castes and OBCs and implementing Uttar Pradesh formula. Then some of the political parties hatched a conspiracy to ruin the Kanshi Rams policy and encouraged the classification of SC reservations, creating rift between Malas and Madigas. The former union minister found fault with the state government for appointing the single-man commission on classification of reservations to SCs. Speaking about Visakha Steel Plant, Mohan said that the central government financial assistance of Rs 11,000 crore is not sufficient to improve the plants progress as the TD government pushed the plant to ICU with huge losses. He demanded that Chandrababu Naidu should pull out of Visakha Steel Plant from the losses. He said that the banks wrote off Rs 45,000 crore of loans of an industrialist in the country by collecting only Rs 450 crore and also provided a loan of Rs 10,000 crore. But the banks are not able to provide even 1 per cent of loans to SCs and STs, which have a 25 per cent population in the country.

Informers tip off helps Ranga Reddy district DMHO bust kidney racket; Govt. sets up committee
Cricket betting connected with Kidney racket (Representational Image) Cricket betting connected with Kidney racket (Representational Image) Hyderabad: The sustained efforts made by Ranga Reddy District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) B Venkateswar Rao in convincing an informer helped in busting the kidney racket at Alakananda Hospital at Doctors Colony in Saroornagar. The informer first gave a tip off about the racket and refused to share hospital details and locations. The informer might be first trying to check our seriousness to probe into the racket, Rao explained, while speaking to Deccan Chronicle here on Wednesday. He said he again called the informer and spoke to him politely with patience making him clear about the importance of the information. In response, the informer got convinced slightly and revealed only the area name, refusing to inform the hospital details. But after much persuasion assuring that the informant details would not be disclosed to anyone, the informer got convinced and disclosed the hospital information. Based on the tip-off, a special team headed by Rao conducted a joint operation with the police and raided the hospital only to find that the hospital, which was functioning for the last six months, was performing surgeries illegally. To my surprise, the informer came to the hospital during the raid, met me and introduced himself, Rao said, adding that he thanked him for sharing valuable information. The hospital management headed by Dr. G Sumanth was from Addanki in Andhra Pradesh. After inspecting the hospital, Deputy DMHO Dr. Geetha lodged a complaint with the police officials, who later detained Sumanth. Taking a serious note of the racket, the State government constituted a committee headed by Saroornagar Government Hospital Professor Nagender to probe into the racket and submit a report. The report would be submitted to the Indian Medical Association (IMA) requesting to take necessary action against the hospital. Given the severity of the case, the Rachakonda police in coordination with the DMHO intensified the probe to zero in on the modus operandi adopted in performing kidney transplants illegally. Sources said a thorough questioning of Sumanth would help the police in getting more information about the donors and recipients apart from cash transactions involved in the racket.

How selfie with wife became fatal for nearly three-decade-underground top Maoist
BHUBANESWAR: Chalapathi was careful in his movements and remained a mystery for decades until a selfie with his wife led security forces to him. One among the top seven in CPI(Maoist) ranks, he was killed along with 13 'comrades' in an operation at the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border. Ramachandra Reddy, better known as Chalapathi, operated in the shadows and led the Maoist attack in Odisha's Nayagarh district in 2008 in which 13 security personnel were killed. Though Ramakrishna, a top Maoist leader who is now dead, masterminded the attack of February 15, 2008, Chalapathi was the person who executed it on the ground, a senior officer involved in anti-Naxal operations said on Wednesday. He was also the person who ensured that the Maoists could successfully escape from Nayagarh town after robbing the police armoury, he added. 14 Maoists killed in Chhattisgarh: Odisha police played a key role in the operations Chalapathi ensured that police reinforcements could not enter Nayagarh when the attack on the armoury was underway, he said, adding that the Maoists had blocked all roads leading to the town with massive tree trunks. Hailing from Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district, where Maoist activities have ended now, Chalapathi was mainly active in Chhattisgarh and Odisha, officials said. Over the last few years, he had been staying in Darabha in Chhattishgarh's Bastar district as he couldn't travel much due to problems with his knees. He was in his mid-60s, they said. Chalapati joined the banned People's War Group (PWG), which was wreaking havoc in some southern states, in his early years. Maoist leader carrying Rs 1 crore bounty among 14 killed in encounter in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband He did not go to school, but he was a voracious reader, fluent in Telugu, Hindi, English and Odia, they added He was considered an expert in military tactics and guerrilla warfare, officials said. After the CPI(Maoist) was formed in 2004 with the merger of multiple underground Communist groups, including PWG, he started rising through the ranks, and became a member of the outfit's central committee, they said. It was Chalapathi who set up Maoist operations in Odisha's backward Kandhamal and Kalahandi districts, expanding the network. However, his attempt to loot another police armoury in Kandhamal district was foiled by the police in 2011, officials said. During his life in the forests, Chalapathi got close to Aruna alias Chaitanya Venkat Ravi, a 'deputy commander' of the Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC). Subsequently, they got married. He was a mystery for the security agencies but a selfie with Aruna led to his identification and a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head. This selfie of the couple was found in an abandoned smartphone that was recovered in May 2016 following a gunfight between Maoists and security forces in Andhra Pradesh, officials said. This also restricted his movement, and forced him to travel with a dozen cadres guarding him. Fourteen Maoists, including Chalapathi, were killed in a gunfight with the security forces at the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Two of them were gunned down on Monday morning, police said. Another round of gunfight began late Monday night and continued till the early hours of Tuesday, in which 12 more Maoists were killed, they said.

S Rajamani, a protester, said, The Andhra Pradesh government provides up to Rs 5,000 as allowance and Rs 15,000 monthly pension for fully disabled persons. Our allowances should also be hiked, considering the cost of living and our medical expenses. We are asking for our rights as we also pay our taxes. Several others said that they were not being provided work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) on a regular basis. As per rules, people with 40-60% disability should be provided work under the Act. However, in Brahmapuram panchayat, we are denied work due to our disability, alleged P Natarajan, one of the members. A Rajendran, also from the same panchayat in Katpadi taluk, said, Sometimes, we get work only for 25 out of the 100 days. They also claimed that the monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 provided for persons with severe disabilities had been pending for around two years for over 650 people. The protesters, decrying the state for not hiking the allowance, attempted to block Anna Salai, and were detained for a short period by the local police. An official from the District Differently Abled Welfare Office told TNIE that the state, besides the maintenance allowance, offers around 77 schemes for the PwDs, including provision of loan, assistive devices, Antyodaya Anna Yojana and employment assistance, which may not be provided by the Andhra Pradesh government. On delay in disbursal of the Rs 2,000 allowance, the official, citing a delay at the head office, said that the allotments for 835 applications were given two months ago and the allowances are reaching the beneficiaries. The official assured that action against those concerned regarding the MGNREGA issue would be taken if they received a complaint.

Inter practicals: Pupils, parents equally worried
VIJAYAWADA: Parents are concerned about the Intermediate practical examinations, which are scheduled from February 10 to 20, as they are of the view that students are not properly equipped to face them. A majority of junior colleges, which lay emphasis on entrance tests, have ignored training students in Science practicals. On January 8, Board of Intermediate Education Secretary Kritika Sukla announced significant reforms to improve the standards of junior college education. The reforms include emphasis on both theory and practical examinations. Students are also a worried lot as they seem to be not prepared well for practicals. We have barely had any practical session in our college. We are now expected to do well in practicals. It is unfair to ignore since practicals as they are crucial for APEAPCET, said Ravi Kumar, an MPC student from Poranki. Practical exams hold significant weightage in Intermediate education, particularly for students appearing for EAPCET in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. For MPC students, 30 marks each are assigned for Physics and Chemistry practicals. For BiPC students, the total marks assigned for practicals is 120, 30 marks each for Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology. The move to conduct the practical exams under CCTV surveillance has also put pressure on Intermediate Science students. Speaking to TNIE, G Ramasundari, a private school teacher from Gudivada, said, None of the colleges where our children study, has conducted a single practical session. When we ask about our childrens future in the wake of greater emphasis on science practicals, college management have failed to give satisfactory answers. If the Intermediate Board warned the junior colleges at the beginning of the academic year itself, students would have been better prepared for the practicals. Unfortunately, this was not done, said M Venkateswarlu, a parent from Ongole. Most of the students have lacked even basic understanding of practical terminology and safety measures to be followed to conduct practicals in the lab, said S Narahari, State president of AP Parents Association (APPA). He criticised the private colleges for collecting lab fee ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per student without conducting proper practical sessions. Nearly 80% of private colleges lack adequate lab equipment, and they do not even maintain records of practical classes conducted. The Intermediate Board has failed to monitor this for decades, he alleged. E Eswaraiah, secretary of APPA, demanded strict measures to ensure fair assessment of students practical knowledge. Practical and theory exams should be conducted in a foolproof manner under the CCTV surveillance. Proper evaluation of record books is also essential to highlight that government college students often possess superior practical skills compared to those of private institutions, he said.

No question of VSP privatisation, asserts Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha
VIZIANAGARAM: There is no question of privatising the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. Instead, the Union government will announce a special package to develop it. YSRCP leaders cannot tolerate the good work being done by our government and are resorting to mudslinging, said Vizianagaram district in-charge and Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha on Tuesday. She reaffirmed the TDP-led NDA governments commitment to the development of Andhra Pradesh and the welfare of its people. Drawing a parallel between the current dispensation and the previous government, she accused the YSRCP leaders of focusing on personal gains rather than public service. The minister also addressed allegations regarding the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, criticising the YSRCP for spreading false information. During his tenure, YS Jagan frequently visited Delhi to protect himself from CBI cases. In contrast, our Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu is going to Delhi to secure funds for the State. Responding to recent comments by YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana, Anitha clarified the financial assistance provided in the Ramatheertham case. Botcha Satyanarayana does not seem to know the difference between a witness and an accused. We provided financial assistance under the Chief Ministers Relief Fund (CMRF) to a poor auto driver who was a witness in the Ramatheertham idol vandalism case, not the accused, she explained. All leaders in our coalition government are working tirelessly for the people. Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, we are utilising the NREGS funds to construct and repair roads across the State. In Vizianagaram district, nearly 80% of road works have been completed, the home minister said.

Rising temp increases dengue cases, says study
NEW DELHI: A new study by the Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) underscored that rising cases of dengue disease are directly linked to rising temperatures due to climate change. Moreover, the study advocates for establishing an early warning system to potentially predict dengue outbreaks more than two months in advance. The study set off the alarm that, in the absence of timely interventions, rising temperatures and fluctuating monsoon rainfall could increase dengue-related deaths by 13% by 2030 and 2340% by 2050 in India. Climate change has already been impacting the Indian monsoon, which is becoming more erratic and uneven. It has led to an increase in the number of dry spell days with high humidity, which is a conducive environment for mosquito breeding. Meanwhile, the study says, heavy rains above 150 mm in a week reduce the prevalence of dengue by flushing out mosquito eggs and larvae. The study projected that an increasing number of warmer days (temperature and humidity over India) in the future would exacerbate the dengue situation in the country. The study is published in Scientific Reports journal, the research explores how temperature, rainfall, and humidity influence dengue in Pune, a dengue hotspot. It reveals that a combination of warm temperatures above 27C, moderate and evenly distributed rainfall, and humidity levels between 60% and 78% during the monsoon season (JuneSeptember) increases dengue incidences and deaths in Pune. The study led by IITM scientists Sophia Yacob and Roxy Mathew Koll sheds light on the intricate links between climate and dengue in India. Scientists have developed a dengue early warning system that incorporates all potential climate-based dengue factors (predictors) and their combined interactions with dengue at a regional scale. The model uses observed temperature, rainfall, and humidity patterns; the dengue model is able to predict potential dengue outbreaks by more than two months in advance, with reasonable skill, said Koll. Such dengue early warning systems can help authorities in a number of states which bear the burden of a high number of dengue cases and can take proactive measures to prevent and manage outbreaks, he further adds. States like Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, which bear a significant dengue burden, can significantly benefit from an advanced early warning system like this to enhance preparedness and reduce the diseases impact. The Maharashtra government recognises the study, which will pave the way for future policy-making in a warming world. This collaboration highlights the importance of bringing together expertise from diverse fields to address complex climate-health challenges, said Sujata Saunik, Chief Secretary, Govt. of Maharashtra.
