Andhra Pradesh Chambers proposes Coastal Beach Corridor
VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry Federation (AP Chambers) has urged the State government to develop a Coastal Beach Corridor between Suryalanka in Bapatla district and Vodarevu in Chirala of Prakasam district. In a representation to Special Chief Secretary (Tourism and Culture) Ajay Jain, AP Chambers President Potluri Bhaskara Rao highlighted the untapped potential of the scenic 20-km coastline, known for its white-sand beaches and emerging hospitality sector. Despite APs 1,000-km coastline, tourist inflow from outside the State remains limited due to infrastructure and connectivity gaps, Bhaskara Rao noted. He emphasised the need for a dedicated beach road linking Suryalanka and Vodarevu, passing through Pandurangapuram Beach, which has seen a surge in premium resorts and ongoing hospitality projects. AP Chambers recommended enhancing direct road connectivity to Suryalanka and Vodarevu from Vijayawada and Hyderabad and creating a 6-10 km beach road to facilitate access to key tourist spots. This corridor could pave the way for 20-25 new high-end resorts, positioning it as Andhra Pradeshs Mini Goa, Bhaskara Rao stated. The proposed corridor is also seen as a strategic destination for weekend getaways for residents of Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntur, and the Amaravati Capital Region. AP Chambers suggested that the project should integrate infrastructure, hospitality, ecotourism, and sustainability to make the area tourist-friendly. To attract investments, the federation recommended improving basic amenities such as lighting, parking, sanitation, and coastal protection. If implemented, the project could boost employment for local youth and artisans, increase tourist footfall, Rao asserted.

CM Chandrababu Naidu keen to complete Handri Neeva on war-footing
VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is leaving no stone unturned to speed up the Handri-Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) project, the backbone of Rayalaseema. On Friday, he will visit Uravakonda in Anantapur to inspect the construction work, laying emphasis on its speedy progress to ensure water reaches every corner at the earliest. During the previous TDP regime, the HNSS project saw major progress. Naidu felt that the project canals were not big enough to carry the much needed water, so he kicked off widening the HNSS Main Canal in April 2017. Big wins included finishing the Gollapalli Reservoir and Madakasira Branch Canal in 201617, with water supplied to Kia Industries from Gollapalli. Cherlopalli and Marala reservoirs were completed by 2018-19, and in 2019, water flowed to Madakasira and Punganur Branch Canals (PBC) for the first time. But from 2019 to 2024, the project was ignored by the previous government, just like Polavaram. Now, with the NDA coalition in charge, Naidu has brought new energy to HNSS. He has sanctioned funds for widening and lining the HNSS Main Canal and PBC, aiming to wrap up Phase I by June 2025. In just five months, the canals water-carrying capacity has jumped from 2,200 cusecs to 3,850 cusecs thanks to lining work. Phase I is almost done, and Phase II, covering Punganur and Kuppam canals, is moving fast. The government is investing `3,873 crore to fix 554 km of canals. Phase I gets `696 crore, while Phase II has `1,256 crore for the HNSS Main Canal (Km 216400) and PBC (Km 075). Work on PBC (Km 75207) started in January 2025 with `480 crore, covering 15 km so far. Kuppam Branch Canal, with `197 crore, began in February 2025, completing 40 km. More plans include `590 crore for HNSS Main Canal (Km 400490), `291 crore for Km 490554, and `362 crore for Neeva Canal (Km 0123). After Phase II, the Main Canal will carry 2,520 cusecs and PBC 840 cusecs. Once completed, the HNSS will water 6,02,500 acres across Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa and Chittoor districts. Phase I will irrigate 1,98,000 acres (77,094 in Kurnool, 2,906 in Nandyal, 1,18,000 in Anantapur). Phase II will cover 4,04,500 acres (33,617 in Anantapur, 1,93,383 in Sri Sathya Sai, 37,500 in Kadapa, 1,40,000 in Chittoor). Plus, 33 lakh people in 81 mandals will get drinking water, changing lives in the region.

Trupthi Canteen opened in Nellore for womens growth
NELLORE: The State government has launched its first Trupthi Canteen in Nellore city as a pilot initiative to empower women economically and promote eco-friendly practices. Minister of Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) P Narayana said the project, launched under the Smart Street Programme in partnership with the SaRa Project, is a model for similar ventures across Andhra Pradesh. This first-of-its-kind canteen, launched in Nellore, aims to generate income for women while offering nutritious food to the public, he said. A joint initiative by the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and the SaRa Project, the Tripti Canteen was inaugurated at Atmakur Bus Stand Centre. Encouraged by its initial success and growing income levels, MEPMA now plans to scale up the model across the district. Each unit operates from a 20x12 container provided by the government and consists of four women trained in kitchen and business operations. These canteens use electric appliances powered by solar energy under the Surya Ghar Scheme, aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The State aims to establish 700 Trupthi Canteens, engaging over 3,000 MEPMA-affiliated women. Each canteen will provide direct employment to four women and create additional indirect employment, with each entrepreneur expected to earn at least Rs 30,000 per month. In Nellore, the canteen serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner prepared by experienced cooks, offering both quality and affordability. The initiative also helps create sustainable livelihoods for self-help group women. MEPMA officials estimate a turnover of Rs 6.39 lakh for each canteen, with expenses amounting to Rs 3.92 lakh, resulting in a net income of Rs 2.46 lakh. Meal prices remain competitive with the open market, ensuring accessibility. MEPMA Project Director Radhamma, Nellore, said, This is the first Trupthi Canteen established in the state, right here in Nellore. It is generating good income. We plan to expand to more key junctions in the city, followed by canteens across corporations and municipalities. The total investment per canteen is estimated at Rs 16.40 lakh. Of this, the four women partners contribute Rs 3.10 lakh each, totalling Rs 12 lakh, while MEPMA and the SaRa Project fund the remaining amount.

Set up omni bus stand in Dharmapuri along NH to alleviate passenger woes
DHARMAPURI: Owing to the lack of an omni bus stand along the Salem-Bengaluru national highway, passengers arriving in Dharmapuri in private buses, especially at odd hours, are left stranded for at leats two hours, with little to no last-mile transport options. Residents have urged the district administration to take steps set up a bus stand or at least a designated area along the highway, to alleviate transport concerns of passengers deboarding here. The district lies along the NH 44 highway and is a crucial route for all buses going from south Tamil Nadu to Bengaluru. With trains being limited, hundreds of government and private company employees use omni buses to commute to and from various parts of the state or other states often. Speaking to TNIE , S Arulmozhi, a government employee said, Nearly a month ago, I had boarded a private bus from my native in Tirunelveli to work here. The bus had dropped me off near Thadangam panchayat around 3 am. At this time, there were no buses or other alternatives available. I had to wait there for at least 45 minutes before I could hire a cab. Moreover, it also cost me about Rs 400 for to reach Dharmapuri which is only 6 km away. Therefore, a designated area must be allotted to drop off passengers where there is access to public transportation. R Saravana Perumal from Dharmapuri, working in a private company in Andhra Pradesh, said, Even boarding omni buses is a hassle. I had booked a bus to Tiruchendur for a pilgrimage with my family. The bus was supposed to pick us up at a Lorry rest stop near the Hogenakkal bypass road by around 11pm. However, the bus arrived over two hours late and we had no access to restrooms or shops to even purchase water. Adding to our woes, it was raining with no shelter in sight. Two other families were also affected like us. Another resident, R Krishnan, said, The lack of an omni bus stand is the issue. Passengers get dropped off at Thoppur toll gate and they have to board a bus to Dharmapuri bus stand and then change buses there. This is a tedious process and before 6 am, there are very few buses running. Officials in the Regional Transport Office were not reachable for comment.
Jagan Mohan Reddy files petition in Andhra Pradesh HC for Z+ category security
VIJAYAWADA: YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, former Chief Minister and YSRCP chief, filed a petition in the AP High Court on Thursday, questioning the inaction of the Centre and the State government on his plea to reinstate Z+ category security. He claimed that the failure to provide him adequate CRPF or NSG protection violated constitutional norms and requested an independent reassessment of his threat level to restore Z+ security. If unavailable, he sought approval to use his own bulletproof vehicle. Post-government change, his security was significantly curtailed without prior notice, disregarding ongoing risks. Accusing the State of shirking its responsibility to safeguard public figures, Jagan urged the court to mandate Z+ security restoration. The matter is set for a Friday hearing. Sajjala Bhargav Reddy & others get HC relief The AP High Court provided relief to Sajjala Bhargav Reddy, former YSRCP social media head, and other activists in a case over social media posts, questioning the polices use of BNSS Section 111 (organized crime). The court ruled that Section 111 requires a chargesheet from the past 10 years, which was not present, making the case legally untenable. It found the Section 111 charges against Bhargav Reddy and others unwarranted based on initial evidence, and instructed police to follow BNSS Section 35(3). Justice N Vijay issued these directives on Wednesday, calling for prompt government action. No HC interim protection to former minister Kakani The AP High Court deferred to June 16 the decision on whether individuals accused in SC/ST cases can directly seek anticipatory bail in the High Court or must first approach the SC/ST special court. On Thursday, the bench of Justices Kanchireddy Suresh Reddy and V Sujatha denied former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddys request for interim protection against stringent police action. Kakani filed the anticipatory bail petition in an illegal mining case registered by Podalakuru police, later compounded by an SC/ST case. Kakanis counsel O Manohar Reddy urged interim relief to halt police action, but the Advocate General cited the Supreme Courts TA Hameed vs M Viswanathan ruling, limiting the benchs authority. Upholding this precedent, the bench refused interim orders and set the next hearing for June 16.
Minister doubles as ryot, reaps record yield of 65 bags of paddy per acre
VIJAYAWADA: Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu, a farmers son with deep roots in agriculture, has emerged as an exemplary farmer by achieving a remarkable yield of 65 bags of paddy per acre in his six-acre farm. Despite his demanding roles as an MLA and Minister for Water Resources, he actively participates in farming, demonstrating that dedication and scientific methods can lead to high productivity with minimal investment. At a press conference organised at Palakollu Assistant Director of Agriculture Office, Addala Parvathi, Assistant Director of Agriculture, and K Rajasekhar, Mandal Agriculture Officer, shared details of Ramanaidus achievement. In his fields at Agarathi Palem village in Palakollu mandal of West Godavari district, Nimmala cultivated the PR 126 fine variety (Grade A) paddy during the Rabi season. His six-acre farm yielded a total of 390 bags, averaging 65 bags per acre with low input costs and high profit. Ramanaidus hands-on approach sets him apart. Despite his busy schedule, he spends time in his fields during his two-day visits to his constituency, engaging in tasks like transplanting, weeding, applying fertilisers, and spraying pesticides alongside farm workers. During the tillering stage, he aerated the soil to promote healthy root and tiller development, which significantly boosted yield. His proactive measures, such as preventing weed seed contamination and adapting to weather conditions, were instrumental in achieving record yield. Parvathi and Rajasekhar emphasised that Nimmalas achievements highlight the potential for farmers to achieve high crop yields through careful planning and adherence to expert guidance.
Amend AP Act to make Amaravati as State capital, Cabinet to Centre
VIJAYAWADA: The State Cabinet meeting, held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, approved Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. A resolution naming Amaravati as the capital of the residual state of Andhra Pradesh will be sent to the Centre to amend the AP State Reorganisation Act. Sections 2 and 5 of the AP State Reorganisation Act mention that Hyderabad would serve as the joint capital for ten years following the State bifurcation. After this period, Hyderabad would become the capital of Telangana, and the newly constructed capital by Andhra Pradesh would become its own. However, the Act did not specify the name of Andhra Pradeshs new capital. Therefore, the Cabinet has decided to send a resolution to the Centre to officially include Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. Similar to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the area governed by the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA) will form part of Amaravati. Disclosing details of the Cabinet meeting to mediapersons, Minister for Information and Public Relations Kolusu Parthasarathy stated that the people of Andhra Pradesh had no clarity regarding their capital for the past five years due to the three capitals theory proposed by the previous government. The current coalition government has now decided to seek statutory approval for Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh. The Cabinet expressed solidarity with Operation Sindoor, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi against Pakistan, and commended the strength and valour demonstrated by the Indian Army during the operation. The State Cabinet approved a proposal authorizing the Commissioner of the Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) to approve short tenders for four works worth `1,732.306 crores, award contracts to L1 bidders, and implement decisions approved by the Andhra Pradesh CRDA Authority through Resolutions 529/2025 to 532/2025. Administrative approval given for several infra works in capital region The Cabinet also authorized the Chairperson and Managing Director of the Amaravati Development Corporation Limited, Vijayawada, to approve L1 bids for two packages: (a) Package XXXXI - E15 Road extension up to Old National Highway Mangalagiri (` 72.79 crores), (b) Package XXXXII - E13 Road extension up to National Highway-16 (` 400.56 crores). The approval includes issuing work orders to L1 bidders and implementing proposal through APCRDA Authority Resolution No.536/2025. The Cabinet approved an administrative sanction proposal for ` 560.57 crores for Package XXXXIII under the Amaravati Capital City Development Program funded by the World Bank and Asian Development Bank. The work includes Design, Build and Operate (DBO) method with additional supplementary works and maintenance. Additionally, administrative approval was granted for `494.86 crores under Package XXXXIV, also part of the Amaravati Capital City Development Program funded by the World Bank and ADB. This includes ancillary works, SCADA, an AI-based water management system (Digital Twin), and five years of operation and maintenance for the total water supply (up to water pumping to the WTP) in Amaravati, following the DBO method. An administrative sanction of `593.03 crores was approved for Package XXXXV, involving the construction of the E3 Road (Phase III) extension with a six-lane elevated corridor, an interchange connecting to National Highway-16, bridges, underpasses, and utility works in Andhra Pradesh. This project aims to improve road connectivity within the Amaravati Capital City region and nearby areas. It authorized the APCRDA Commissioner to take necessary actions based on the recommendations of the 17th Ministers Team Meeting regarding the review of land allocations to various institutions within the CRDA area. Approval was granted for undertaking 281 infrastructure works in all municipal corporations via the SNA-SPARSH platform, under the Concessionary Hybrid Annuity Model (CHAM), as part of the Amrut-2.0 programs State Water Action Plan (Phases I & II). The Cabinet also approved 12 types of related regulations to support implementation. The Cabinet approved amendments to G.O.Ms.No.16, Water Resources (Projects.II) Department, dated 08.04.2025, concerning the formation of the Jalaharati Corporation as a Special Purpose Vehicle with 100% state ownership under the Companies Act, 2013. Fruit prices skyrocket as unseasonal rains hit yield in Guntur
GUNTUR: Fruit sales in Guntur have plunged as soaring prices driven by unseasonal rains keep customers away, with mangoes the seasons staple bearing the brunt. Vendors report a steep rise in prices due to lower yields, impacting both affordability and demand. In urban Guntur, a dozen mangoes now cost between Rs 400 and Rs 600, compared to last years Rs 250 to Rs 350. Untimely rains in February and March reduced yields, pushing up procurement costs, said K Ramakrishna, a fruit trader in Brodipet. Even traditionally affordable fruits are seeing price hikes. Ice apples, known for their cooling effect, now sell for Rs 70 to Rs 100 per dozen, up from Rs 50 last year. Even these are now pinching the pocket, said Swapna, a vendor. Watermelons, a summer staple, have become pricier. Whole melons range from Rs 100 to Rs 150, while sliced pieces sell for Rs 20 to Rs 30 each. Earlier, wed buy more slices casually; now, even that feels costly, said D Raghu, a shopper. Juice stalls, too, are feeling the squeeze. Were seeing a shift to fruit juices, but rising fruit costs forced slight price hikes, said R Rama Krishna, who runs a stall in Arundelpet. Mango wholesalers report the biggest decline in sales. I usually bring in five to six tonnes of mangoes weekly. This time, its just three, said Shaik Kareem, a wholesaler at Nallapadu fruit market. Retailers are adding a Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg markup, further discouraging buyers. Shoppers like Saritha, a school teacher at Patnam Bazaar, are switching to cheaper options. Were buying fewer mangoes and opting for melons or ice apples instead, she said.

Elevation of Sunny Joseph as KPCC chief reshapes Congress power play
KOCHI: The Congress partys announcement of Sunny Joseph as the new KPCC president has triggered a realignment of internal power blocs, while also showcasing a deliberate attempt at social balancing. The move gave outgoing chief K Sudhakaran a dignified exit and installed his close confidant at the top, keeping his influence intact, said sources. Sunny, a three-time MLA and a practising Syro-Malabar Catholic, enjoys broad acceptability in his constituency and has received strong backing from Church leadership, including Archbishop Joseph Pamplany of Tellicherry, Archbishop Thomas Tharayil of Changanacherry, and the Ernakulam Archdiocese, sources told TNIE. Sources said mounting displeasure from influential dioceses had created pressure on the Congress leadership to ensure that the KPCC presidents post went to a Syro-Malabar Christian. The decision is viewed as a strategic step to retain the traditional Catholic vote bank that had started warming up to the BJP. The Congress high command also ensured social balance. Alongside Sunnys elevation, Adoor Prakash, an Ezhava, was made UDF convenor; P C Vishnunath, a Nair, and Shafi Parambil, a Muslim, were appointed working presidents, along with A P Anil Kumar from the SC community. Congress general secretary (organisation) K C Venugopal succeeded in placing two of his loyalists Vishnunath and Anil Kumar in key roles. However, Venugopals third preferred name, Anto Antony, was left out marking a significant setback and indicates his waning influence with the Congress High Command. Anto had positioned himself as the Catholic face of the party with support from Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malankara Church, but his campaign reportedly suffered due to a lack of acceptance from the Syro-Malabar hierarchy -- especially Changanacherry, Ernakulam-Angamaly, and Tellicherry -- and a disconnect with grassroots workers. Further complicating his prospects were concerns over his familys shift to the Pentecostal faith, which did not sit well with traditional Syro-Malabar segments. His active encouragement in the appointment of another Pentecostal, Sharmeela Reddy, as Andhra Pradesh Congress chief, raised serious concerns about political opportunism, an informed source said. With support from leaders like Muraleedharan and Ramesh Chennithala, Sunnys rise was smooth. But attention now turns to his working relationship with Opposition Leader V D Satheesan. With local body polls around the corner, the new leadership team has little time to settle in. The absence of a woman in the top leadership continues to be a glaring omissionespecially with the Womens Reservation Bill set to take effect in 2029. It seems, this round of appointments for the Congress in Kerala, is less about change and more about calibration -- an effort to steady the ship, with the Church and community math firmly in mind.
