YSRC Terms Stone Attack on CM YS Jagan as Assassination Attempt

Vijayawada: YSRC general secretary Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy has claimed that the stone attack on Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy was well-planned and those behind this incident should be exposed. He launched the YSRCs LED campaign vehicles on Thursday as part of the 2024 election campaign in Andhra Pradesh. Launching the vehicles, the party general secretary said Jagan Reddys fans from the US have offered the campaign vehicles for free and the Challa Madhu team was coordinating and sending these vehicles for electioneering across the state. These vehicles would publicise the welfare and other schemes of the YSRC government in various constituencies. Ramakrishna Reddy said, NRI friends from the US have provided 13 vehicles voluntarily for campaigning. People want another five years of Jagan rule, they like the welfare and development that happened in these five years. He said the SCs, STs, BCs and Minorities are thinking that Jagan's victory is their victory. Regarding the stone attack on CM Jagan, Ramakrishna Reddy said, We still call it a pre-planned attack, both of them (Jagan and MLA Velampalli Srinivas) were hit by that stone and injured. We are lucky that a big injury or incident was avoided. Responding to the description of the stone attack as a drama by Telugu Desam and Jana Sena, Ramakrishna Reddy challenged them to play the same drama if they have guts. He refuted allegations of Naidu and other leaders of implicating TD candidate Bonda Uma in the stone attack in the Jagan case. If there is a Bonda Uma roll, it will come out and if there are others including Chandrababu, it will also be revealed in the investigations. He stressed that there was evidence to show that the attack on the CM was pre-planned and there was no doubt that the attack was an assassination attempt.

Patients suffer at Kurnool GGH due to lack of adequate fans & ACs

KURNOOL: The persisting heatwave-like conditions and the mercury level crossing 44 degrees Celsius in Kurnool has turned the Government General Hospital into a hot cauldron. The lack of fans, coolers, and air conditioners has exacerbated the situation, turning the lives of in-patients into a nightmare. To escape the sweltering heat and suffocation, several patients and their attendants often take shelter under trees on the hospital premises. The Government General Hospital in Kurnool is considered one of the oldest teaching hospitals in the State. Around 2,500 to 3,000 outpatients are treated for various diseases at the hospital daily. More than 450 doctors render their services at 36 units of the 1,150-bed hospital. Not only from Rayalaseema, but patients from neighbouring Prakasam district, Telanganas Gadwal, and Mahabubnagar as well as from Karnataka visit the hospital to get treated. With the lack of adequate facilities, Kurnool GGH has been seeking the governments attention. Though as many as 800 fans, 150 air conditioners, and 25 coolers were installed in the hospital, 30 per cent of them are said to be under repair. The attendants of patients at the burns ward stated that the unit is better when compared to other wards, where the patients have to face mosquito menace and stinking environment due to poor sanitation, and suffocation in sweltering heat. Speaking to TNIE, G Eswar, an attendant of a patient from Gadwal, said, My father was admitted to the trauma care unit a few days ago. Though the doctors are taking good care of my father, the lack of fans in this scorching heat is testing our patience. We had to bring a fan from our house to beat the heat. Complaining that patients are spending sleepless nights due to lack of ventilation, Ramudu, a patient at Sushruthi Bhavan said that he was more comfortable outdoors rather than indoors. GGH patients assured of better services A staff nurse, who wished not to be named, said that at least three fans were not functioning in their medical unit. Even though we brought the issue to the notice of the authorities to get their repaired, the problem remains unsolved, she said. Another hospital staffer put forth the immediate need for fans and ACs at all units including, surgical, gynaecology, medical, trauma care, and burns ward, besides setting up additional generators to provide uninterrupted power supply in the government general hospital. Responding to this, the Kurnool Government General Hospital officials said that they are taking measures to repair the appliances and ensure better services to the patients during the summer.

Andhra Pradesh: From ice apples to mangoes, seasonal fruits flood markets

GUNTUR : The arrival of seasonal fruits in the markets is offering a much-needed respite to the public, who are reeling under scorching heat. As heat wave-like conditions are prevailing in several districts, consumption of summer seasonal fruits, including ice apples, watermelon, jackfruit, and coconut water has increased considerably in the past couple of weeks. Following this, the sales of these fruits are at peak, even though the peak summer is still more than a month away. Ice apples, locally known as Thati Munjulu due to its tarty flavour, is the primary choice of the public, as they are pocket friendly with prices ranging from Rs 50-70 per dozen. Meanwhile, the high prices of mango are not dampening the sales, as people are ready to spend a few extra bucks to enjoy this seasonal fruit. Its prices range from Rs 100-150 per kg depending on the variety. However, the vendors are predicting that the prices might go down in the next couple of weeks, as the mango yield was good this year due to suitable climatic conditions and additional loads of mangoes will soon hit the market. Even the retailers in the city saw a brisk sale in recent days. The retail vendors are selling the produce Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg more than the price at wholesale markets. Watermelon, with high water content, is a summer saviour and is available at Rs 20-Rs 30 per kg. Even though a wide variety of summer fruits are available, watermelon is always the market leader, says D Rangadu, a fruit vendor at Guntur market. Cut into equal pieces and arranged in an attractive way, watermelon never fails to attract passersby. It is a good remedy for dehydration, apart from its cooling effect. Several juice shops and cafes are including various recipes of these fruits into their menus to attract the customers. People are more health conscious now than in the past and are opting to drink fruit juices rather than soft drinks as summer drinks. So, we are also offering various varieties to improve our clientele, said R Rama Krishna, owner of a fruit juice shop in the city. As the mercury level rises, doctors and dieticians advise people to consume seasonal fruits the natural way without adding artificial sweeteners, especially while consuming fruit juices. Consuming seasonal fruits that provide is recommended to beat the heat.

Venkatagiri Rajas and weavers may sway outcome

NELLORE: Venkatagiri Assembly constituency is poised for a gripping electoral showdown with the YSRC and TDP nominating candidates hailing from prominent political families. While the YSRC has fielded Nedurumalli Ramkumar Reddy, the son of former chief minister N Janardhana Reddy, the TDP has roped in Kurugondla Lakshmi Sai Priya, the daughter of two-time former Venkatagiri MLA Kurugondla Ramakrishna. The Venkatagiri Rajas have a significant influence in the region and many a times play the role of kingmakers. The royal family played a crucial role in the victory of TDP candidates in 2009 and 2014. However, now it appears that the Venkatagiri Rajas have been moving away from the TDP and towards the YSRC. Venkatagiri Rajas have extended their support to the TDP since the partys inception. The royal family has followers in Venkatagiri municipality, rural, Dakkili, Balayapalli and also in some other parts of the constituency. In fact, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu has also asked Kurugondla Ramakrishna and his daughter Lakshmi Priya to seek support of the Venkatagiri Rajas to secure votes in the elections. Kurugondla Ramakrishna won from the constituency during 2009 and 2014 general elections from TDP. In 2004 and 1999 elections, Congress candidate Nedurumalli Rajyalakshmi bagged the seat. However, Ramakrishna was defeated in 2019 by YSRCs Anam Ramnarayana Reddy. Anam had switched over to the YSRC from the TDP in 2018. However, he was suspended over allegations of cross voting. Following this, he returned to the TDP-fold and is now contesting from Atmakur constituency. The fourth largest municipality in Nellore district, Venkatagiri still does not have proper drainage facility in the town. Established as a Grade-III municipality by merging six gram panchayats, Venkatagiri faces severe congestion due to a lack of proper roads. A number of traders visit the town to purchase sarees and dress materials as Venkatagiri is famous for its handlooms. With 40,000 voters, weavers comprise a sizable chunk of the Backward Class vote pie. Hence, candidates of both parties have been directed to focus on weaver-centric policies in their local manifestos. Stressing the need for a proper drainage system, K Vasu of Ontel Street rued, Sewage water has been stagnant in open spaces which has resulted in rampant mosquito menace. There is no system to clear the stagnated water. Repeated appeals to civic officials regarding the issue has fallen on deaf ears. Alleging that the YSRC government has neither developed Venkatagiri nor the State, TDP nominee Lakshmi Priya said she has plans to develop the town in all aspects. People are ready to elect Chandrababu Naidu as chief minister as he has a vision to take the State on the path of development, she asserted. Following Anams suspension, the YSRC gave responsibilities to Ramkumar to oversee the partys activities in Venkatagiri constituency. Stating that the ruling YSRC has implemented welfare programmes and taken up development works in Venkatagiri segment, Ramkumar exuded confidence and said, People will embrace Jagan as he has fulfilled all promises made during the last elections. He added that the YSRC was moving forward with the goal of winning 175 seats in the upcoming elections under the leadership of YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Husband and wife lock horns for Tekkali segment

SRIKAKULAM: In an interesting development, Duvvada Srinivas, YSRC candidate for Tekkali Assembly constituency, may have to lock horns with his wife in the election. His wife, Duvvada Vani is preparing to file her nomination papers as a rebel candidate on April 22. Tekkali Assembly constituency in Srikakulam district has been the bastion of the TDP since the partys inception in 1983. TDP has won the seat eight times. This also includes former late chief minister NT Rama Raos victory in the segment in 1994. TDP State president and sitting MLA Kinjarapu Atchannaidu is again in the fray as the partys candidate. He won the election from this Assembly segment in 2014 and is now looking to score a hat-trick. Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy who wants to root out the TDP from the constituency, announced the name of Duvvada Srinivas as the partys official candidate. Srinivas lost the election from Tekkali Assembly in 2014 and Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 elections, contesting on YSRC ticket. Jagan nominated him to the legislative council for being loyal to him. With the YSRC president announcing Srinivas as the partys nominee for Tekkali, a domestic discord has emerged between him and his wife Vani. With an intent to win the seat, both opened their own camp offices and have been conducting their campaign separately. Vani won the Tekkali ZPTC election and played a key role at the constituency-level politics along with her husband Srinivas. However, there have been disputes between the couple over the past few months. As a part of this, she lodged a complaint with YSRC top brass regarding her husbands attitude in family affairs as well as in politics. Heeding her request, the party appointed her as Tekkali Assembly segment in-charge. When she thought she was going to be the partys face, the party nominated her husband Srinivas. Shocked by the decision, Vani remained silent for the last few days. However, she opened up before her followers on Thursday and announced that she would stay in the fray as a rebel candidate. She is determined to file nomination for the Tekkali segment on April 22. She had exuded confidence with her followers that the party would give her the B-form. Now Vani made an announcement that she would be in the fray as the partys rebel candidate, raising the political temperature in the segment. TDPs Atchannaidu, YSRCs Duvvada Srinivas, and Killi Kruparani of Congress are preparing to file their nomination in a couple of days. If Vani sticks to her decision, Tekkali Assembly segment, will see a four-cornered contest.

Mohan Guruswamy | Elections 2024: Modi up a steep & slippery slope?

Be it a democracy or a dictatorship, governments are almost always changed by throwing out the incumbent. The former is called a democratic transition and the latter is inevitably a revolution. Even if it is, as usually is the case, more of the same. Indias electoral process that begins on April 19 will be concluded on June 4 when the results are announced. Most psephologists, commentators, astrologers and bazar gossips are sanguine that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be easily re-elected to a third successive term. I do not agree with that sanguinity. I think Mr Modi has a hard hill to climb and the slope may be too steep and slippery for him. Look at the objective reality. In 2019, the BJP won 303 seats or almost 56 per cent of the Lok Sabha with 37.4 per cent of the popular vote. This skew is how it usually is in a first-past-the-post system. Even a minority mandate translates into an overwhelming outcome. But the problem with the BJP mandate is that it is concentrated in a minority of states. The saffron mandate is restricted almost entirely to the large Hindi-speaking states (202/235), as well as Maharashtra (41/48) and Karnataka (25/28). It got 268 out of its 303 in just this concentration. Winning these states is not the issue for the BJP. Repeating this performance is. The BJP governments in these states have not exactly covered themselves with glory. The party got resoundingly thrashed in the recent state elections in Karnataka, where Mr Modi fully deployed his mind spread and headgears, turning it into a Modi versus Congress contest. In the years after 2014, the BJP has turned every election, including for municipal councils, into a Modi versus the rest contest. It has lost many of these. For Prime Minister Modi to repeat 2019, we have to assume that the electorate is able to selectively choose Mr Modi for Parliament and not for the Assemblies. But a lot of murky waters have flowed down the Ganga, the Narmada and Godavari since 2019. The effects of demonetisation (2016), the Covid-19 lockdowns and general mismanagement have set India on a much lower growth trajectory than the one it was between 2004 and 2014. In that decade Indias GDP grew from $721 billion to $2.03 trillion, or an increase of 182 per cent; while in 2024 it grew to $3.75 trillion from $2.03 trillion, or by 86.6 per cent. But lower growth has not slowed down the accumulation of wealth with the upper class. Income inequality is among the highest in the world now. At the end of 2022, the wealth Gini coefficient of India stood at 82.3, a significant increase compared to 74.7 in 2000. Joblessness and job dissatisfaction have grown to dominate our economic and social landscape. The ILOs India Employment Report 2024 paints a bleak outlook for the 7-8 million youth being added to the labour force each year, with youth accounting for almost 83 per cent of Indias unemployed workforce. Even more distressing is that among the unemployed, the proportion of educated young people, those who have had a secondary-level education or higher, has doubled to 65.7 per cent now from 35.2 per cent in 2000. Unemployed graduates (29.1%) outnumber illiterates (3.4%) by nine times. This underscores the shortage of jobs requiring skills and education. The peasantry is disaffected and has taken to the highways again. While the Jat peasantry of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh fattened on assured MSP and near 100 per cent procurement wants more, the peasantry in the rest of the country chaffs at state regulations to control prices and hence restrict their incomes. The fragmentation of land holdings has only added to farmer discontent. Ironically, it is widespread even among those who get all and those who get little. That this general mood will not affect Mr Modis standing in the saffron belt even somewhat, despite a half-constructed temple in Ayodhya, is to be excessively hopeful. People are natural repositories of discontent. Even after Lord Ram returned to Ayodhya it didnt take people too long to raise uncomfortable questions and Queen Sita had to seek refuge in Valmikis ashram. Mr Modi has to deal with discontent and in all likelihood there will be attrition. In each of the saffron states, the BJP won in 2019 with well over 50 per cent of the popular vote. In Gujarat, it polled as much as 62 per cent, in UP it currently holds 64 seats with 49.56 per cent, and in MP and Rajasthan it had over 58 per cent each. Only in Assam did the BJP do well (9/12) with only 36 per cent of the vote. Even in West Bengal, where Mr Modi waged a vicious and personalised campaign against Mamata Banerjee to win 18 seats, it won 40 per cent. The picture is clear, there is too little room to climb higher, while a drop could be very precipitous in terms of seats. Presuming Mr Modi will lose support in the BJPs existing strongholds, where can it hope to make up for the losses? Let's start from the South. It is very unlikely to gain any seats in Tamil Nadu and Kerala -- meaning zero will remain zero. It has 25 out of 28 in Karnataka, which is unlikely to be repeated. The Congress is expected to make strong gains here. The BJP has a recently cobbled up an alliance with the TDP, which could mean a couple of seats in Andhra Pradesh. It has four in Telangana and is unlikely to add to it. Thus, even a 10 per cent loss in seats in the saffron heartland and a further loss of, say 10-15 in Karnataka, will leave it well below the halfway mark. Along with its on and off ally, the JD(U), the BJP won 39/40 in Bihar. With the RJD resurgent and a settled alliance with the Congress, that record is unlikely to be maintained. The INDIA alliance is tipped to easily do double digits or even 50 per cent of the seats in Bihar. The AAP/Congress alliance might sweep Delhis seven seats. The saffron alliance won 41/48 in Maharashtra. With every party split in the state and with an uninspiring state leadership, Mr Modi alone may not be able to pull all the chestnuts out of the fire. Spread it on a spreadsheet and see how the cookie crumbles. It doesnt look like the BJP is anywhere near 400. Even the halfway mark of 272 looks like a hard climb.

'Hope for Life Foundation' champions mental health education for marginalized adolescent girls

HYDERABAD: Understanding mental health and hygiene is crucial, especially among adolescent girls. Sadly, many overlook the fact that most kids are susceptible to unhealthy activities, and increasing poor mental health conditions among them are disturbing. While those with good access to healthcare seek help for various issues, marginalised kids often lack knowledge about such matters. Recognising these challenges, the Hope for Life Foundation, founded by Dr Himaja, has taken strides to educate adolescent girls who lack access to facilities. Recently, the Hope for Life Foundation partnered with Epiq Global Private Limited to organise an event focusing on mental health and well-being among adolescent girls at the MVF residential camp. Dr Himaja highlighted their focus on health, education, and womens empowerment. They support over 6,400 students with education in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, extending services to nine states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Odisha, Kerala, Assam, Gujarat, and others. Through education, they aim to help these girls understand health and well-being, distinguishing between whats beneficial and harmful. Abhay Garg, Senior Vice President and India Head of Business Services at Epiq, participated in the initiative by distributing kits containing health drinks made with millet powder, sanitary napkins, undergarments, and soap. Reflecting on the collaboration, Garg expressed appreciation for being part of the Foundations noble cause. He emphasised the importance of providing basic necessities to adolescent girls, especially during pivotal life stages, and expressed commitment to supporting them. Its disheartening to witness many kids falling prey to various mental health conditions, including substance abuse and suicidal tendencies. Offering insights into addressing these issues, Psychotherapist Dr Hypno Padma Kamalakar stressed the severity of mental health challenges among todays youth, likening it to a more significant threat than COVID-19. She highlighted how stress, stemming from doubts about achieving goals, often escalates into mental health issues and harmful habits. Kamalakar emphasised the crucial role of communication between parents and children in fostering mental well-being, lamenting the lack thereof in modern society. She underscored the need for affection, communication, and touch in parent-child relationships, asserting that neglecting these aspects contributes to a myriad of mental health issues among youth.

EkoGalaxy spearheads climate education in Indian schools with global collaboration

HYDERABAD: Urvi Desai and Shreyas Sridharan are climate action aficionados who have decided to take climate education to schools and colleges with their organisation, EkoGalaxy. While Desai comes from an academic background, having a PhD in medical history from McGill University in Canada, Sridharan spent a decade in the solar technology field. Together, they curate programmes and events on climate-related issues. They also organised climate conversations, a newly introduced theme to the Hyderabad Literary Festival (HLF) held in January this year, which was a huge success. Explaining their initiatives at the school level, Urvi said, Shreyas and I felt that there was a major gap in students learning about the climate crisis. The school curriculum does not allow students to engage in important discussions, while students are experiencing eco-anxiety and social media contributes a lot to this anxiety. We wanted to counter it by teaching about climate, environment and nature with a holistic and integrated approach that includes literature, music, understanding local communities, indigenous practices, etc. EkoGalaxy makes enjoyable, collaborative, holistic and action-oriented programmes for students that bring them closer to nature and instil joy in learning as opposed to augmenting the fear of the climate crisis. Learning with fun Our curriculum is tailored for different age groups and involves a mix of concept learning and activities like tree walks, storytelling, music, etc, said Urvi. They also collaborate with a few European schools. Indian students do projects with students in Europe live in the class. It helps in cultural exchange, and understanding that while its a global issue, the local particularities of the climate crisis cant be ignored, Urvi explained. Having finished their first academic year in schools in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, they have partnered with schools in Greece, Ireland and other European countries. Shreyas Sridharan With this collaboration, we noticed that initially, Indian students were hesitating to interact whereas European students were naturally more outgoing. But by the end of the activity, Indian students too were interacting freely and openly. The growth that we saw was very beautiful. The teachers in Europe were moved because they also had never experienced anything like this. They were talking about the water crisis, earthquakes in Greece, etc, Urvi said. Nefeli, a grade 8 student from Greece, spoke about her experience at the collaboration. She said, I loved learning about the culture of my friends in India. I enjoyed learning about sustainable concepts and practices in India and sharing about our practices here.I made many friends and want to visit India and see Charminar. Apocalyptic thinking among students Urvi told CE that students are quite informed about the crisis but are terrified with the videos they see on social media. We saw that there was an apocalyptic sense of the world. Children were watching videos which had a very terrifying perspective of the climate crisis. A critical part of the climate talks is finding solutions. We helped them understand that even though it is a global problem, it affects everybody locally. Building solutions that can help them mitigate day-to-day struggles also interestingly makes the anxiety quite less. This apocalyptic thinking moves all of us into inaction. Were terrified but also not doing anything about it. Our approach was to bring in the joy element of learning and to notice the biodiversity that is right outside your window, Urvi explained. With great success at the HLF, where EkoGalaxy curated some mindful and nuanced sessions with speakers such as Anand Gandhi and Rohan Chakravarthy, Shreyas and Urvi are organising two events with Goethe Zentrum in the upcoming days. The first event on April 19 at Goethe Zentrum involves Shreyas and I talking about climate action in everyday life. Specific actions that allow us to live a sustainable life. The idea is to have an imperfect but earnest climate action. Linking to this, is the next event, on April 27. We talk about waste without talking about the waste picker, who is at the heart of the whole ecosystem. Swachh is a three-decade-old initiative in Pune. We have a worker coming from there as well as local workers from GHMCs sanitation department. This will help us gain an understanding of waste and also the waste pickers, Urvi concluded.

Attack on Andhra CM: Police detain another from Vaddera Colony

VIJAYAWADA: Vijayawada City Police have reportedly taken another person into custody suspecting his involvement in the attack on Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy last Saturday. The police have already taken five persons into custody for questioning. The sixth person Vemula Durga Rao also belongs to Vaddera Colony of Singh Nagar. Meanwhile, TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu alleged that the police are trying to implicate party Vijayawada Central candidate Bonda Umamaheswara Rao in the case. According to sources, Durga Rao was present at the spot along with Satish, who was earlier picked up by the police for questioning. Durga Rao was reportedly picked up from Bonda Umas office which raised political heat. Uma said it was a deliberate attempt to implicate him in the case. The attack was a freak one. Those who were earlier picked up from Vaddera Colony have claimed that they have hurled the stone as the YSRC government had removed the Anna Canteen in their locality. The youngsters have even said that they were promised Rs 300 each for attending the meeting while women were promised Rs 200 each, but were not given which made them angry, Uma said. The YSRC tried to gain sympathy by overplaying the incident but could not get any. Now, they want to blame the TDP for the incident. I will not spare any police officer who implicates me in the case. We will come to power soon and we will take action against officials who foist cases, he said. Meanwhile, Naidu criticised the YSRC for its attempt to blame the TDP for the stone pelting incident against Jagan. Police took youths and minors from Vaddera Colony, labelling them as the accused, into custody and it was indicative of the governments efforts to conspire against the TDP without disclosing who actually perpetrated the act, he said, and alleged that the YSRC is plotting to involve TDP candidates and key leaders in cases. He said the YSRC is targeting Bonda Uma with an intention to disrupt his poll campaign in Vijayawada Central segment with false accusations. Naidu urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to keep a track of the abuse of power and demanded that officials failing to ensure the CMs security should be relieved of investigation responsibilities. A thorough inquiry should be conducted under the ECI supervision, the TDP chief said. YSRC spokesperson K Ravichandra Reddy questioned as to how the TDP can raise a hue and cry that their leaders are being targeted even before the police made any statement on the accused in the incident. The reaction of Naidu makes us believe that he might be behind the attack, he observed.

AP: HRF criticises Dalit tonsuring case verdict

VIJAYAWADA: The Human Rights Forum (HRF) opines that the judgment in the Venkatayapalem Dalit tonsuring case serves justice only notionally. While the XI Additional District Judge & SC/ST Court in Visakhapatnam was impartial in convicting the accused, the leniency in deciding the sentence indicates that the court may have overlooked the casteist nature of the crime, as mentioned in a release issued Wednesday. Although the sections of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, invoked in this case have provisions for a maximum punishment of five years, the court convicted the accused to a jail term of 18 months. It is pertinent to note that the MLC membership of the prime accused, Thota Trimurthulu, would have been disqualified had the jail term crossed two years, rendering him ineligible to contest in the upcoming polls. HRF stated the crime in this case should not merely be viewed as one committed against the victims, but against the entire oppressed community. There is no justifiable reason for the courts lenient approach in deciding the sentence. The accused, 10 in number, have managed to prolong the case for 28 years owing to the social, economic, and political clout they hold, it said. Their caste background played a key role in ensuring the support of all political parties in the State, it said and demanded the State file an appeal in the High Court to increase the duration of the punishment. If the victims decide to file a private appeal, the HRF will ensure all the cooperation required, it added.

HYDERABAD: A 19-year-old boy has been arrested by Chilkalguda police for allegedly sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl. The victim, hailing from Jaggayyapeta, Andhra Pradesh, was residing at her uncles house in Chikkadpally. Penamaluru to witness tough fight

VIJAYAWADA: With the elections fast approaching, the Penamaluru constituency emerges as a focal point of intense political activity and strategic alliances. Housing Minister Jogi Ramesh, contesting from Penamaluru for the first time, faces formidable challenges from non-local factors. However, the charisma of CM YS Jagan and the schemes of YSRC pave a promising path for him. In contrast, the TDP has strategically nominated local leader Bode Prasad, leveraging his previous victory in Penamaluru in 2014. Prasads long-standing service activities in the constituency bolster his candidacy, drawing support from various sectors. The segment, encompassing over 2.7 lakh voters, boasts a diverse demographic, including significant Kamma, Kapu, BC, Muslim, and Dalit communities. With a track record of winning from Pedana in 2009 and 2019, Jogi steps into a new battleground where he lacks direct contact with voters. He relies heavily on the local YSRC cadre for campaign support. However, his non-local status poses a potential hurdle, requiring time to acclimate to the segments dynamics and garner voter trust. Interestingly, political rivals Bode Prasad and Kolusu Parthasarathy, who previously contested against each other, have joined forces in a bid to secure victory for the TDP. Parthasarathys switch from YSRC to TDP adds another layer of complexity to the electoral landscape, as he now campaigns across the segment. The strategic planning by leaders takes into account caste equations and winning prospects, highlighting the importance of community alliances in securing electoral success. Reflecting on past elections, Penamaluru has remained politically volatile, with no party winning the segment consecutively since its inception in 2008. In the 2019 assembly polls, Parthasarathy clinched victory with 47% of the vote share, riding the wave of YSRCs popularity. However, Prasads defeat underscores the challenges faced by the TDP. Despite of the political strength that the constituency posses, long-pending issues remain unsolved for decades. A resident of Poranki, Bhukya Sowjanya expressed concerns about the drinking water issues prevailing in various parts of the segment. She highlighted that even minor rainfall leads to sewage contamination in boreholes. Despite the proximity of Yanamalakudaru and Pedapulipaka, Chaudavaram to the Krishna (Bandar) canal, many villages in the constituency, including YSR Tadigadapa Municipality lack access to Krishna water. Furthermore, there seems to be a lack of initiative from leaders to construct waterhead tanks, leaving residents without a sustainable solution. Several ponds were also illegally occupied, she said. Sowjanya lamented that while leaders make election promises, they fail to address the underlying issues. Maridu Bhaskara Rao of Penamaluru highlighted the severe drainage issues plaguing the villages in the area. He emphasised that sewage flowing on the roads leads to numerous problems for residents. Inadequate garbage disposal facilities contribute to sanitation concerns in many areas. The presence of dilapidated roads exacerbates traffic problems. A resident from Kanuru, M Nageswara Rao expressed dismay over the stalled construction of the Pantakalava road which is from Patamata to Ganguru, initiated to alleviate traffic congestion for the constituencys residents. The project came to a halt midway due to issues with the approach road at Siddhartha Engineering College, resulting in its incomplete status to date. Despite leaders being aware of this long standing problem, little attention has been paid to address it over the years. Another resident of Poranki, Pannamaneni Srinivasa Rao raised concerns about the plight of tenant farmers in the constituency. He noted these farmers are not receiving support prices for their produce and are also being deprived of government schemes due to the absence of Parmar cards. Additionally, the lack of market yard and godown facilities leaves local farmers with no means to store their grains. Many problems have afflicted the people of the constituency for decades. Yet, it remains to be seen whether leaders will uphold their promises made during elections, fulfil their commitments, and earn forgiveness from the people.

Andhra Pradesh: A tribal hamlets struggle for basic infra though its part of urban body

VISAKHAPATNAM: Lingapuram stands out as the sole tribal hamlet within ward No: 20 of Narsipatnam municipality in Anakapalle district, and yet basic amenities are a luxury for the residents. This hamlet, inhabited by the Konda Dora tribe, houses approximately 75 families, accounting for about a population of 500 people. Unlike many of its counterparts scattered on undulating terrains on the slopes of hills across the district, Lingapuram finds itself within municipal bounds. Even then, basic amenities are out of bounds for the residents. Key challenges include the lack of basic infrastructure. The road connectivity is inadequate as also water supply, and essential amenities like proper drainage. Though a bridge spanning across the Varaha River constructed from Balighattam, made access to Lingapuram, visitors have to negotiate through an unpaved path stretching for about 1.5 km. The hindrance to laying a proper road stems from the areas designation as a reserved forest, which prevents the authorities from improving infrastructure. Poor road connectivity to Lingapuram tribal hamlet in Narsipatnam municipality of Anakapalle district Mulaparthi Rama Raju, the councillor for Ward 20, told TNIE that longstanding concerns regarding the infrastructure challenges faced by Lingapuram still remain unaddressed. He emphasised the enduring nature of these issues, lamenting the villages isolation despite its nominal inclusion within the municipality. Our village has grappled with these problems for decades, despite our municipal status. Like tribal hamlets situated on hills, we lack adequate road connectivity and face water scarcity, Raju said. Detailing the obstacles encountered on the unpaved pathway, Raju said it could turn quite harmful to both pedestrians and vehicles. The rough terrain, strewn with sharp stones, makes the path unsuitable for travel. Even ambulances refrain from traversing this stretch, he noted. Raju underscored the dire consequences of the inadequate infrastructure, citing instances where delays in transportation result in tragic outcomes. Regrettably, there have been fatalities due to delay in reaching medical facilities. There was one such incident where the medical aid could not reach a snake bite victim, he revealed. We currently have 12 individuals over the age of 90 years, five of whom require assistance to be carried, while the remaining seven can only manage with our support, he explained. While road access remains a primary concern for the residents of Lingapuram, water scarcity emerges as another major problem for the tribal community. Despite the ongoing Jal Jeevan Mission aimed at ensuring safe and sufficient drinking water through individual household tap connections by 2024, the prospects of fulfilment appear distant for the inhabitants. First-time voter experiences Mounika, a second-year degree student, articulated her aspirations for a change in her village. I am eager to exercise my voting right for the first time. I seek a leader who can bring tangible improvements to our community and enhance the quality of government educational institutions. Further, perennial issues of lack of road access and water scarcity in our village cry for attention, she said. Ganesh, another first-time voter, said, We have been facing problems with basic needs for a very long time. My friends and I have decided to vote to bring about a change in the government that can actually address our needs through tangible actions, rather than just symbolic gestures. To exercise their voting right, tribals of Lingapuram should undertake an 8 km journey to Krishnapuram. The 292 voters in the hamlet appeal to the district authorities and the ECI to establish a polling booth within their own village for their convenience. If authorities cannot accommodate their request, they could at least make some alternative arrangement to help them cast their votes.

YSRC all set to repulse march of Jana Sena in Rajanagaram segment?

RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM: The Rajanagaram Assembly constituency is witnessing a keen tussle between the ruling YSRC and the Jana Sena party, which has grown in size and influence across three mandals in the constituency in East Godavari district. Considering the ensuing elections prestigious, YSRC candidate and sitting MLA Jakkampudi Raja is not relying merely on his party colleagues to repulse the march of Jana Sena. He has already been extensively touring in the constituency for the last three months. On the other hand, JSP candidate Battula Balarama Krishna along with his family members is leaving no stone unturned and has been campaigning vigorously for the past three months. Remember, both the contenders belong to the Kapu community. While Kamma community are socially and economically dominant in Seethanagaram mandal, Kapu community are wielding upperhand in Rajanagaram and Korukonda mandals. Established in 2009 as per the Delimitation Orders, Rajanagaram Assembly seat was won by TDP candidate Pendurthi Venkatesh in the 2009 and 2014 elections. However, YSRC wrested the seat from the TDP candidate in the 2019 elections. Keeping in view of the Kapu community dominance in deciding the fate of the candidates, TDP has allocated the seat to Jana Sena as part of the alliance in the ensuing elections. Battula Balarama Krishna, who is a novice to politics, promised to introduce corporate-level education to elementary school and to set up a junior and degree colleges to impart quality education to students. Pointing out the acute drinking water problem in the constituency, the JSP candidate has assured the people that he would strive to rope in funds to provide water tap connections to every household in the segment. After coming into power, I will work towards setting up software technology parks in the area, increasing employment opportunities further preventing migration of graduates to other States in search of livelihood, he told TNIE. Meanwhile, YSRC district president and 2024 candidate Jakkampudi Raja reiterated that he had developed the Kalwacherla industrial estate, besides creating a conducive environment for the establishment of more than 400 industries in the constituency. He said that his commitment to laying of roads to each village has been realised as the Seethanagaram to Rajamahendravaram road works are nearing completion, beside commencement of the national highway to Vizianagaram from Rajamahendravaram through the agency area. Rajanagaram constituency is a gateway to East Godavari, where people coming from Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Telangana States have to pass through the segment. In this regard, the infrastructure, including construction of hospitals, in the constituency has been upgraded to meet the needs of the people, he informed. Meanwhile, people of Rajanagaram Assembly segment are alleging that many government schemes are confined to the paper for the past few decades. Acute drinking water shortage is persistent in the region, which further gets exacerbated during the summers. RTC bus stands in Korukonda, Seethanagaram and Rajanagaram are in poor condition and have no basic amenities for the passengers. In addition to this, lack of bridges connecting Mulakallanka and Bobbilanka villages have become a big hurdle to farmers and residents equally who wish to cross the Godavari river.

LS polls 2024: Kesineni brothers cross swords in Vijayawada

VIJAYAWADA: The Vijayawada parliamentary constituency, which has strategic importance for the development of Andhra Pradesh as a whole, is in dire need of infrastructure development to address the increasing urban population, more so after State bifurcation. One of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh post bifurcation, Vijayawada is urban and semi-urban in nature, and like any urban constituency, it is also facing infrastructure problems. Now, sitting MP Kesineni Nani, who switched over to the YSRC, is facing his brother Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni) of TDP in the electoral battle. Vijayawada has seven Assembly segments Vijayawada East, Vijayawada Central, Vijayawada West, and Mylavaram, which are urban, Jaggaiahpet and Nandiagama are semi-urban, and Tiruvuru has a rural character. It has a population of approximately 22,18,591 and the total electorate in the Lok Sabha constituency is 14,69,858. Formed in 1952, the Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat had Harindranath Chattopadhyay, an independent, as its first MP. He was the younger brother of freedom fighter Sarojini Naidu. After him, it was represented by Dr Komarraju Atchamamba of Congress. In the subsequent three elections, the Lok Sabha seat was represented by K Lakshmana Rao, G Murahari and Chennupati Vidya from the grand old party. Vadde Sobhanadreswara Rao became Vijayawada MP on TDP ticket for the first time in 1984 and again he represented the constituency in 1991. Parvathaneni Upendra of Congress was elected twice from Vijayawada Lok Sabha seat, followed by Gadde Rammohan of TDP once, and Lagadapati Rajagopal of Congress twice. After him, Kesineni Srinivas (Nani) of TDP won in 2014 and 2019. Speaking to TNIE, Ch Babu Rao of CPM, who is contesting Vijayawada Central Assembly seat, said the issue of Amaravati as the State capital will have a significant impact on the poll outcome. Besides sentiment, there is a hope for development and progress in the region. However, it was neglected, costing people of the region several opportunities, he pointed out. Prices of land, real estate business, and construction workers dependent on realty sector had suffered due to the lack of progress on the capital city issue, said Congress leader Kolanukonda Sivaji. Another leader, not wishing to be named, said even after a decade of State bifurcation, there has been no infrastructure development in the State. The Inner Ring Road is still under construction, road networks remain undeveloped, the metro rail and the proposed waterway has remained on the paper only, he added. A farmer leader pointed out that the Vijayawada parliamentary constituency has more upland area and falls under the ayacut of Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal. However, farmers suffer due to lack of proper irrigation facility. Chintalapudi Lift Irrigation scheme is yet to benefit farmers, he said. It may be pointed out that there is no major industry in the Lok Sabha constituency, which was named after former CM NT Rama Rao after the district reorganisation. Speaking to TNIE, Jandhyala Shankar, former mayor of Vijayawada, said though Vijayawada railway station is an important junction with over 300 trains and significant freight traffic, facilities at the station are anything to be boasted about. There is not even a ramp, he said. Further, he pointed out that Vijayawada has no zoological park, though space is available at Kondapalli. It will give a much-needed lung space and recreational zone for the people of the region, he explained.

Long-pending issues likely to determine fate of contestants in Pattikonda

KURNOOL: While the construction of a tomato processing unit and maintaining water levels in water storage tanks have been long pending, the demand for Polytechnic college, government hostel for women, migration of labour, road widening in town, road connectivity in rural villages and permanent solution for both irrigation and drinking water problems are expected to be the key factors swaying the electorate in the Pattikonda Assembly constituency for the upcoming elections. The Pattikonda Assembly constituency consists of five mandalsPattikonda, Krishnagiri, Veldurthi, Tuggali and Maddikera. The total number of electorate are 2,19,373 as of January 2024. It is important to note that there is no Polytechnic college for students in the constituency as well as a government hostel for women who hail from rural corners of the segment to pursue intermediate and degree in Pattikonda town. Another important issue being faced by people in the constituency is availability of water for cultivation of crops. In spite of having several storage tanks, ponds and reservoirs in the constituency, the officials have failed to maintain adequate levels of water for irrigation of the fields. Even the elected representatives were lagging behind in solving the water issues faced by the local farmers. The drying up of water storage tanks is creating a continuous drought-like situation every year and also having a cascading effect on the labourers as they are migrating to cities like Hyderabad, Guntur, and Bengaluru for daily wage works. K Ganesh, a resident of Pattikonda town, alleged that despite having nearly 37 irrigation water tanks and ponds situated in the constituency, the support for irrigating crops is absent. Almost 70 per cent of total one lakh ayacut have been turned into rain-dependent farm lands due to negligence of political representatives and officials, who failed to maintain the water levels in storage tanks and reservoirs during the rainy season, he lamented. He further asserted that had the officials maintained the water properly in the tanks, all the irrigation related problems as well as the drinking water issues faced by the Pattikonda constituency would have been resolved. Another long lasting demand of the farmers in the segment is the construction of a tomato processing factory. The tomato farmers of Pattikonda cultivate the crop in nearly one lakh acres every season. However, in most of the cases, such as sudden decline of market price for tomatoes and lack of marketing and storage facilities leads to farmers discarding their hard work laced tomatoes thrown into mud. In order to provide support to the tomato farmers, the State government has planned and laid the foundation for a tomato processing unit at Pattikonda on November 30, 2023 with a total project estimate of Rs 12 crore in an area of 3.60 acres. The construction works are yet to commence, alleged tomato farmers. While the farmers and general public are grappling without sufficient water for cultivation of crops and drinking water, the daily commuters complain about the conditions of roads and are demanding for road widening in the town area. On the other hand, the rural people are facing daily hardships while commuting among the villages due to the deplorable conditions of roads. The fate of roads will decide the fate of the MLA candidates in the constituency, said Maddikera villagers. Several villagers alleged that the sitting MLA had promised to solve their problems as part of her campaign in 2019 but failed to fulfil it.

Its rebel MLA Kotamreddy vs YSRC sitting MP Adala in Nellore rural

NELLORE: The Nellore Rural constituency stands out as a unique electoral arena, characterised by a distinctive voter approach centred around evaluating candidates diligence. Here, electoral decisions transcend traditional campaign paraphernalia. Instead, voters place paramount importance on assessing the hard work and dedication demonstrated by the candidates. Nellore rural is a newly formed constituency in 2009 as part of reorganisation and the Telugu Desam has been losing the seat due to political tie up. For the first time, partys candidate Sk Abdul Aziz has contested and lost the seat to Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy during the 2019 polls. Now, again sitting MLA Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy from TDP is contesting in the elections which would be a touchstone for performance of the party in the segment, analysts say. In the 2009 elections, Congress candidate Anam Vivekananda Reddy secured the win against the Praja Rajyam party candidate Anam Venkata Ramana Reddy from the Assembly seat. Further, in 2014, the TDP failed to contest and supported BJP candidate, S Suresh Reddy, who had to taste defeat against YSRC candidate Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy. With Kotamreddy changing loyalties to TDP, YSRC fielded sitting MP Adala Prabhakar Reddy to retain the seat. In both the 2014 and 2019 elections, Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy secured victories over his opponents, with margins of 25,653 and 20,776 votes, respectively, defeating BJP nominee Sannapu Reddy in 2014 and TDP nominee Shaik Abdul Aziz in 2019. He expressed his dissidence over the ruling YSRC after making serious allegations against the party leadership. Further, after dramatic developments, Kotamreddy Sridhar Reddy joined TDP in the presence of N Chandrababu Naidu and made his ground ready in advance. On the other hand, Adala Prabhakar Reddy, a seasoned septuagenarian politician, embarked on his political journey by winning the Allur Assembly constituency in the 1999 general elections on a TDP ticket, subsequently serving as the Minister for Housing. He later switched allegiance to the Congress party, clinching victories in the Sarvepalli constituency against senior TDP leader Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy in both the 2004 and 2009 elections. After a brief stint back in the TDP fold, Adala contested the Nellore MP seat in 2014 but suffered defeat in the hands of YSRC candidate Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy. Adalas political trajectory took another turn in 2019 when he joined the YSRC and secured a resounding victory in the Nellore Lok Sabha constituency, defeating TDP candidate Beeda Masthan Rao by an impressive margin of 1,48,571 votes.
