Gujarat misses top skill rankings, youth bear the brunt of job crisis
AHMEDABAD: Despite crores spent on skill development, Gujarat has failed to make it to the top five in the India Skill Report 2025, exposing a glaring mismatch between state policies and ground realities. While states like Maharashtra and Delhi surge ahead in youth employability, Gujarats youth are battling low wages, shrinking opportunities, and systemic neglect from a government long accused of prioritizing big industries over meaningful employment. In a major blow to Gujarat's growth narrative, the India Skill Report 2025 has placed the state outside the top five in youth employability, signalling a persistent skills crisis. The report, which analyses parameters like knowledge, aptitude, communication, behavioral traits, and alignment with industry needs across 11 sectors, has exposed Gujarats stagnation in preparing its youth for future-ready jobs. While Maharashtra tops the chart with 84% employability and cities like Pune, Bangalore, and Mumbai dominate the employment map, Gujarat fails to find a place even among the top-performing states or cities. This dismal performance is despite the tall claims and big-ticket schemes like Pradhan Mantri Kaushalya Vikas Yojana, Kaushalya University, and the Mukhyamantri Bhavishya Loksi Kaushalya Vikas Yojana. Gujarat congress chief spokesperson Dr. Manish Doshi said, The reality on the ground tells a grimmer story. Small and medium industries - once Gujarats industrial backbone are gasping for survival, with nearly 50% of units in GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation ) struggling to stay afloat. As state policy favors corporate giants, grassroots enterprises are shutting shop, directly impacting job creation and wage levels. Youth entering the job market are not only underpaid but increasingly compelled to migrate to other states in search of work, he added. The report highlights that even with expensive education, Gujarats youth are unable to convert degrees into decent employment. In 2024, the male employment rate stood at 51.8%, and while a marginal improvement is forecast for 2025, a sharp dip is expected in womens employment, revealing a widening gender gap in the states job ecosystem. Ten years of similar assessments have underscored Gujarats consistent underperformance in youth employability, pointing fingers at directionless governance and alleged corruption in education and employment departments. Insiders allege that the 500 skill development centres across the state have become dens of mismanagement, with outsourced agencies reaping profits while students suffer. Critics argue that the BJP government, despite splurging crores on advertising skill programs, has failed to create genuine pathways to employment. As Gujarat's youth are pushed to the margins, the larger question looms: how long will the state remain a bystander while others race ahead in the employment revolution? Top 5 States in Employability (Skill Report 2025): 1. Maharashtra 84% 2. Delhi 78% 3. Karnataka 75% 4. Andhra Pradesh 72% 5. Kerala 71% Top 5 Cities with Employment Potential: 1. Pune 78.32% 2. Bangalore 76.48% 3. Mumbai 72.45% 4. New Delhi 70.22% 5. Thiruvarur 72.15%
Marine fish catch drops 2 per cent; Gujarat tops chart
KOCHI: The traditional fishermen and mechanised trawlers caught 3.47 million tonnes of marine fish in 2024, according to the data released by the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) in Kochi on Monday. The overall fish catch recorded a slight decline of 2% compared to the previous year. Gujarat retained the top slot in fish landings with 7.54 lakh tonnes, followed by Tamil Nadu (6.79 lakh tonnes) and Kerala (6.10 lakh tonnes). As per the annual marine fish landing estimates, the Indian mackerel remained the biggest marine resource, recording a total catch of 2.63 lakh tonnes, followed by oil sardine with 2.41 lakh tonnes. The landing of major species such as Indian mackerel, threadfin breams, oil sardine, ribbonfishes, non-penaeid shrimps and cephalopods recorded a decline in 2024 compared to the previous year, while landings of lesser sardines, penaeid shrimps, anchovies and tunnies increased. While the West Coast region suffered an overall decrease in landings, the East Coast showed an increasing trend, with exceptions in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. Maharashtra registered the highest growth of 47% compared to the previous year. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Odisha also recorded notable increases of 35%, 20% and 18% respectively. However, states like Karnataka, Goa, and Daman and Diu experienced a significant decline in landings. The marine resources research institute monitored around 2.5 lakh fishing trips, offering an in-depth view into nationwide effort and productivity. Mechanised fishing vessels reported an average catch of 2,959 kg per trip, while motorised crafts used by traditional fishermen managed 174 kg per trip. Non-motorised vessels recorded a modest 41 kg per trip. The CMFRI report pointed out that cyclonic storms such as Dana, Fengal, Remal, and Asna significantly impacted fishing activities, contributing to the overall decline. Increased heatwave days in Andhra Pradesh and Kerala further disrupted fishing operations. Kerala recorded a marginal decrease of 4% in the marine fish catch in 2024 compared to the previous year. The total fish landing in the state was 6.10 lakh tonnes. Indian oil sardine topped the list of most caught species in the state with 1.49 lakh tonnes, registering a slight increase of 7.6%. Indian mackerel (61,490 tonnes), penaeid shrimp (44,630 tonnes), anchovies (44,440 t) and threadfin breams (33,890 tonnes) were the other major contributors to Keralas total marine catch. Indian mackerel saw a decline of 16% in landings. The year witnessed very low landing and higher landing of oil sardine in different quarters. The year saw an unusual fluctuation in oil sardine landings in Kerala. A severe scarcity in the first quarter led to prices escalating to Rs. 350-400 per kg. However, from September onwards, as landings surged exceeding one lakh tonne in the last quarter, prices dropped sharply to Rs. 20-30 per kg. Compared to 2023, souther districts of the state (Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam) recorded a decline, while northern districts (Malappuram to Kasaragod) registered an increase in the landings. The Fishery Resources Assessment, Economics and Extension Division of the CMFRI estimated the annual marine fish landings of the country through its online data collection system.

Half into monsoon, a third of districts face rainfall deficit
NEW DELHI: The Met offices claims of normal, above-normal, and even excess rainfall during the first half of this monsoon may look promising on paper, but it hardly reflects the ground reality. One-third of the countrys districts, including key agricultural states, are experiencing significant rainfall deficits, which may impact food production. As the monsoon reaches its midpoint, the country has received patchy, uneven rainfall thus far. Approximately one-third (about 31%) of districts have reported deficient rainfall, particularly in important agrarian states such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Assam, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Overall, the country recorded 474.3 mm of rainfall in the first half of monsoon, 6.4% higher than the normal of 445.8 mm. However, rainfall distribution has been somewhat uneven. The states on the Himalayan foothills, stretching from Uttarakhand to the Northeast, have mostly remained dry. Data indicates that the eastern and northeastern states experienced approximately 23% deficient rainfall, while the southern peninsula faced suppressed monsoonal activity. State-wise analysis shows that UP reported deficient to significantly-deficient monsoon conditions across 34 districts, followed by Bihar (27), Assam (27), Tamil Nadu (22), Andhra Pradesh (15), Telangana (12), and Punjab and Haryana (10). Punjab, Haryana, and UP are particularly important in terms of food grain production. Currently, 24% of the 728 districts across the country have recorded deficient monsoon rainfall, defined as a reduction of 20% to 59% below the long-term average, while 7% districts are experiencing large-deficient rainfall, classified as a reduction of 60% to 99%. In July, while above-normal rainfall was observed, there has been a consistent decline in rainfall over the years. This July, India received 294.3 mm rainfall against a seasonal normal of 280.5 mm.

Janardhan Reddy says 7,000 aid to farmers to be disbursed on August 2; free bus travel for women from August 15; 4,000 crore road connectivity projects underway
CHANDIGARH: Between January 20 and July 22 this year, a total of 1,703 Indian citizens were deported from the United States, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed in response to a question in the Lok Sabha. The highest number of deportees was from Punjab, followed by Haryana and Gujarat. Of the total, 767 individuals returned on commercial flights from the US, while 333 were deported via US Customs and Border Protection (Military) flights. In a written reply to a question posed by MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh shared these statistics in the Lok Sabha. Among the deportees, 1,562 were men and 141 were women. The state-wise breakdown is as follows: Punjab (620), Haryana (604), Gujarat (245), Uttar Pradesh (38), Goa (26), Maharashtra (20), Delhi (20), Telangana (19), Tamil Nadu (17), Andhra Pradesh (12), Uttarakhand (12), Himachal Pradesh (10), Jammu & Kashmir (10), Kerala (8), Chandigarh (8), Madhya Pradesh (7), Rajasthan (7), West Bengal (6), Karnataka (5), Odisha (1), Bihar (1), Jharkhand (1), and six cases with the state of origin unknown. Further details on the modes of deportation revealed that 333 individuals were deported by the US Customs and Border Protection (Military) flights on February 5, 15, and 16. Another 231 were deported on charter flights by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on March 19, June 8, and June 25. Additionally, 300 people were deported on July 5 and 18 via Department of Homeland Security (DHS) charter flights. Seventy-two deportees arrived in India individually or in small groups, as and when their commercial flight tickets were arranged from Panama. Another 767 individuals returned from the US on commercial flights, again in small groups or individually. The Ministry stated that it remains engaged with the US authorities to ensure the humane treatment of deportees during these operations. It said concerns had been strongly registered with the US regarding the treatment of deporteesespecially the use of shackles, including on women and children. Concerns with regard to religious/cultural sensitivities, including the use of turbans and dietary preferences, have also been formally taken up with the US side. The Ministry has not received any complaint pertaining to the treatment of deportees on any flight after February 5, 2025, the reply stated. On the issue of monitoring the status of Indian students and migrants in the US facing deportation or visa-related challenges, including social media-based vetting procedures, the MEA said it had received several representations from Indian students and their families struggling to get student visa appointments. The Ministry took up the matter with the US Embassy in New Delhi as well as the US Department of State, the reply said. In response, the US side informed that additional security requirements for student visas had reduced the capacity of the US Embassy and consulates in India to process visas. However, student visa appointments are now open. For the J-1 physician category, the US side has launched a software-based solution to prioritise their appointments. Several students who had earlier reported difficulty in finding appointment slots under this category have now been able to secure appointments. The US Embassy is working to open a limited number of additional student visa appointments through the end of August in recognition of the urgent need before the start of the new academic year. A student visa fact sheet with frequently asked questions (FAQs) is also being developed to reduce uncertainty around the issue, the reply noted. The Ministry added that while visa issuance remains a sovereign prerogative of the host country, it has consistently raised with both the US Embassy in New Delhi and the US State Department in Washington, DC, the issues faced by Indian students in securing visas.

Following Kochi's footsteps, CUMTA exploring water metro between ECR and Napier Bridge
CHENNAI: The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is exploring an ambitious plan to introduce a water metro system, inspired by Kochis pioneering model , as part of efforts to diversify urban mobility and boost the citys tourism appeal. CUMTA special officer I Jayakumar told TNIE that the authority has proposed a water-based transit corridor linking East Coast Road with Napier Bridge. Kochi has shown it can be done, he said. But in Chennais case, the river has to be revived before the boat can sail. The plan, part of the citys Comprehensive Mobility Plan, envisions a 53-kilometre corridor through Chennais coastal and inland waterways. Electric or hybrid ferries may be deployed, but a feasibility study is underway to assess navigability, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. The project aims to ease road congestion and promote low-emission transport alternatives. The idea of water transport in Chennai is not new. In the past decade, several proposals have focused on reviving the Adyar and Cooum rivers, Buckingham Canal, and Kosasthalaiyar river. A detailed project report was once prepared under the National Waterways initiative to integrate segments of National Waterway 4 (NW-4) into an inland water transport network. However, past initiatives were derailed by pollution, encroachments, shallow channels, and irregular water flow. Officials now say lessons have been learned. For the water metro to succeed, sustained river restoration, investment in low-draft vessels and terminals, and seamless integration with Chennais metro and bus networks will be essential. The Centres NW-4 initiative, covering 1,078 km across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry, has progressed slowly. But officials believe renewed interest in urban water transport could bring fresh momentum to parts of NW-4, especially under a unified mobility strategy.

Remote centres outside Kerala force candidates to drop out of NEET-PG
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM/KOCHI: With just two days remaining for the National Eligibility Entrance Test-Postgraduate (NEET-PG), on August 3, many medical graduates are shocked to get examination centres outside the state in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Many candidates had carefully chosen cities near their residences as preferred centres during the application process. However, many were stunned to be assigned locations hundreds of kilometres away. Im not appearing for the exam this time. Ive been allotted a centre in Telangana, and Im eight months pregnant. The travel and stay costs are too high for me and my family, said Dr Kavitha (name changed), a candidate from Thiruvananthapuram. Other young mothers in my batch are opting out too. Weve paid Rs 4,000 for the application, and now were forced to abandon the attempt. Surveys conducted by several junior doctor associations revealed that approximately 1,000 applicants from Kerala were given centres outside the state. The uncertainty over exact venue details only disclosed two days prior to the exam on July 31 adds to the logistical nightmare. If I had received Kollam as my centre, I could reach anywhere nearby without issues. But with a location like Visakhapatnam, I dont even know how close the centre will be to a hotel. How do we plan ahead? said Dr Ashik Basheer, state president of the General Practitioners Association. Candidates have also voiced concerns over inflated travel and accommodation prices. Although NBEMS guarantees at least one exam centre in every district, available slots fill up quickly due to the 20,000 applicants from Kerala. When submitting the application, candidates can choose a preferred city, and if its unavailable, the system assigns a centre near their home address, though theres no guarantee. Historically, slots were allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, but this time, candidates were shocked by what they believe is a random allocation. Dr Vivek K B, state secretary of the IMA Junior Doctors Network, Kerala, urged NBEMS to reopen the portal for centre change, allowing candidates to select more practical options. In the past, the Board cited a shortage of test centres as the reason for allocating centres outside the state. However, in previous years, changes to exam centres were made through court interventions or petitions from MPs. Last year, the exam was held in two shifts. This year, the exam has been postponed following an SC order directing NBEMS to conduct the exam in a single shift. Calls and emails sent to NBEMS by TNIE have gone unanswered. Allotment issues NBEMS guarantees minimum 1 exam centre in every dist but slots fill up fast due to 20K applicants from Kerala While applying, candidates can choose a city, and if its unavailable, the system assigns a centre near their home address Slots are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis

SC quashes FIR against Telugu actor Mohan Babu and his son in 2019 student protest case
In a major relief to Telugu actor-producer Mohan Babu and his son Vishnu Manchu, the Supreme Court on Thursday quashed a criminal case registered against them in a 2019 student protest in Tirupati over fee reimbursement. A reading of the FIR (First Information Report) and the charge-sheet neither discloses any act committed or illegal commission that caused common injury, danger, annoyance to the public or any section of the public or interference with their public rights, nor do they disclose any voluntary obstruction to a person that prevents them from proceeding in any direction that they have a right to proceed in, said the two-judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice BV Nagarathna and including Justice KV Viswanathan, in their verdict. The SC quashed the FIR against the father-son duo after finding that the offences invoked against the accused were not made out in the case. The appellants (Babu and Vishnu) were exercising their right to freedom of speech and expression and to assemble peacefully, the court said. As per the prosecution case, ahead of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, Babu and his son along with others had held a rally along the Tirupati-Madanapalli road and raised slogans against the state government for not granting student fee reimbursements. They were booked on a complaint made by the person in charge of the Model Code of Conduct Team-IV, Chandragiri assembly constituency. In January this year, the Andhra Pradesh High Court refused to quash the proceedings in the case, forcing the father-son duo to knock the doors of the top court seeking relief in the case. The HC, in its order, observed that there were specific allegations against the accused. When the top court started hearing Babu and his son's appeal, it found that the ingredients of the offences invoked in the case were entirely absent. There is no material to suggest that there was any undue influence at elections, impersonation at elections or any act committed with the intention to interfere with the free exercise of electoral rights, said the apex court in its 17-page verdict, a copy of which was accessed by TNIE. While giving a clean chit to them, the apex court added, Further they do not suggest that any act was committed on a road or in an open place within the limits of a town that caused inconvenience, annoyance or posed a risk of danger or inquiry or damage to the public, and do not disclose any of the eight specified actions under Section 34 of the Police Act, 1861. The top court went on to add that on the contrary, the accused were exercising their right to protest. The appellants were exercising their right to freedom of speech and expression and to assemble peacefully. Therefore, no purpose will be served by continuing the prosecution, the apex court further said. While commenting on the HC verdict, the SC said that the HC erred in concluding that there were specific allegations against the appellants and that there were no tenable grounds to quash the proceedings.

Bangladeshi model-actress held in Kolkata with Indian documents
KOLKATA: A Bangladeshi model-actress, Shanta Pal, was arrested in Kolkata after Indian voter ID, PAN card, and Aadhaar card were recovered from her rented flat in Bikramgarh. Following a written complaint filed in the Park Street police station, sleuths searched the flat and recovered the documents. This arrest assumes significance, especially when various states have launched a drive to identify and detain the Bangladeshi people, who have been living in India illegally. Following detention, many of them have also been pushed back to Bangladesh by the BSF. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, however, blamed the Centre for their illegal entry into India and alleged that Bengali migrant workers have been harassed and tortured in various BJP-ruled states for speaking in Bengali. According to Kolkata Police officials, an Aadhaar card was issued in Shanta Pals name in 2020 using an address in Burdwan. During the search, police also recovered a Bangladeshi passport, a Bangladesh Airways employee ID card and an admit card for Bangladeshs secondary school examination. She is being interrogated to find out how, being a Bangladeshi citizen she managed to get Aadhaar, PAN and voter cards and from where. Who helped her to get all these documents. Her various social media posts are also being investigated, a police official said on Thursday. She won the Miss Asia Global Bangladesh beauty pageant title, organised by an organisation in Bangladesh. A few days ago, the model-actress also filed a complaint of fraud at the Thakurpukur police station. It is learnt that Shanta was born in 1998. Her parents lived with her in the Bikramgarh flat. They are also being investigated by the police. Shantas husband is a resident of Andhra Pradesh. The investigators have been trying to ascertain how Shanta came in contact with him before marriage.
