India vs Eng 4th T20I: Hosts beat England by 15 runs, seal series win with 3-1 lead

England were striking hard for a win to level up the series, but were handed defeat by the hosts in Pune, here at the 4 th T20I on Friday. They had the best of a chance to win the game, by starting on with the toss in their favor, then limiting India quick to 12 for 3 followed by 79 for 5. The visitors were 62-0 during the powerplay at the flat pitch, with heavy dew. But somehow kept on losing wickets ending up at 166 only. England lost their six wickets to the spinners alone. They were still on a high batting at 129 during the 15 th over, but Varun Chakraborty again clinched two worthy wickets in his last over. Secondly, what added to the win of India is the batting performances. Even though the wickets fell down quick, yet there was never a slowdown. India lost wickets of Sanju Samson, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma, but the inning s continued with Abhishek Sharma batting on one end. The final touches were added by Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya who overcame the mid-inning crisis. Both of them scored 53 each taking on India to a good enough total of 181. Not to forget, the substitution of Harshit Rana when Shivam Dube was hit on the helmet in the final over of Indias innings. Dube was replaced by Harshit Rana, a full time bowler who on his debut T20I took three important wickets of Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, and Jamie Overton giving only six runs in the 19 th over. England had Saqib Mahmood as the top pick of the bowlers with 3/35. Harry Brook hits a half-century and is picked up by Chakraborty. Buttler was the in-form batter for England but he also lost wicket to Ravi Bishnoi. The latter also broke the partnership, taking the wicket of Ben Duckett too. Though they were high in powerplay, they lost quick three wickets in 4 overs. And one by one losing it all at 166. Post- match Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav said, A top effort from everyone. A great crowd, they were always behind us. We didnt want to go back after 10/3. Three wickets in one over was too much. The way Hardik and Dube showed their experience was great. This is one thing we have been talking about- you bat the same way you bat in the nets. I think we are moving in the right direction. I knew we could control the game after the powerplay. We picked a few wickets. Post drinks, Harshit Rana came in as the third seamer and delivered. (What to expect in Mumbai?) Lot of fireworks, I am sure. The final T20I international of the five match series between India and England is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 02 nd February 2025 in Mumbai. After this, the two teams also have a three match ODI Series that will be played in Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad respectively.

Orissa High Court seeks SPs report on ostracism of tribal family

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has directed the Mayurbhanj district police to file an action taken report (ATR) on the alleged social boycott of a tribal family by some of the villagers at Dorakantia village under Bangirposi police station limits. A kangaroo court was conducted in the village and 60-year-old Sundar Mohan Majhis family was slapped with a fine of Rs 25,000 for allegedly practising sorcery last year. Subsequently, Majhis family was ostracised for not paying the fine. More so, when his wife Sakramani Majhi died on October 23 last year, villagers decided against permission for cremation if he did not pay the fine. The funeral could be done after much delay only with the help of a social organisation. Majhi moved the high court as his FIR at the local police station apparently did not result in amelioration of the familys plight. Advocate Bijay Kumar Mishra argued on behalf of the petitioner. Taking serious note of the allegations, the single judge bench of Justice SK Panigrahi on Thursday directed the SP Mayurbhanj to file an affidavit regarding the steps taken on the issues, especially the social boycott and restraining him from harvesting paddy on his own agricultural land and any other problems faced by the petitioner. He shall also explain as to what proactive steps have been taken by the police administration to bring the present petitioner into the mainstream against such orthodox people, Justice Panigrahi also ordered, adding, the affidavit shall be filed by February 25. In the meantime, the police administration shall extend assistance to the petitioner to perform the death ritual of his deceased wife. It is also made clear that, no member of any NGO except the family members of the petitioner should be there to perform the death ritual without any assistance. The police shall also take steps to allow the petitioner to use the water from common well including the tube-well and other common resources of the village, Justice Panigrahi further directed.

Orissa High Court starts monitoring PIL for protection of six Ramsar sites in state

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has fixed February 12 to start monitoring measures taken for conservation of six wetlands in the state which are internationally recognised under the Ramsar Convention. The wetlands include Chilika lake spanning 1,16, 500 hectare, Bhitarkanika mangroves 65,000 hectare, Satkosia gorge 98,197 hectare, Tampara lake 300 hectare, Hirakud reservoir 65,400 hectare and Ansupa lake 231 hectare. On December 11 last year, the Supreme Court directed each of state/UT wetland authorities to complete ground truthing as well as the demarcation of wetland boundaries of each of the wetlands which have been identified by Space Applications Centre Atlas (SAC Atlas), 2021, within three months. The apex court had also directed the high court to ensure that the Ramsar sites within their jurisdiction were properly maintained. Accordingly, a bench of Acting Chief Justice Arindam Sinha and Justice MS Sahoo initiated a suo motu PIL on January 22 for conservation of the six wetlands spread over a total area of 3,45,628 hectares. The bench sought affidavits from the state authorities, including the State Wetland Development Authority by February 12 on steps taken for implementation of the Supreme Court order. The SC issued the order as a continuation of its order issued on April 3, 2017, to 15 high courts (Orissa High Court included) to initiate suo motu PIL to conserve 26 major wetlands within their jurisdiction which were Ramsar sites. The Orissa HC had then registered a PIL for conservation of Chilika lake and Bhitarkanika mangroves which were designated as Ramsar sites on October 1, 1981 and August 18, 2002 respectively, and appointed advocate Mohit Agarwal as amicus curiae on September 19, 2017, to assist it. The Acting Chief Justice Sinha bench tagged the PIL initiated on January 22 with the PIL started in 2017, while expanding the HCs monitoring area to Satkosia gorge, Tampara lake, Hirakud reservoir and Ansupa lake. As things stand today, the HC has been monitoring for the past seven years identification of the areas where illegal prawn culture is going on and demolition of such illegal prawn gheries, eviction of illegal occupants and then simultaneous lodging of criminal prosecution against the offenders. The HC had started the proactive conservation measures following submission of a report by the amicus curiae which raised six issues for preservation of Chilika lake and Bhitarkanika mangroves.

India vs England: Shami's return sight for sore eyes

CHENNAI: Just as artificial light was beginning to take over from natural light at the Niranjan Shah Stadium at Rajkot on Tuesday, the familiar but slightly forgotten sight of Mohammed Shami steaming in with a white ball next to the main pitch played itself out. Since that fateful evening against Australia in Ahmedabad on November 19, 2023, all cricketing stakeholders the paying public, commentators, broadcasters, the board and the players have yearned for him. It's definitely not been a case of out of sight, out of mind. If anything, it's been a case of absence making the heart grow fonder. It's easy to why the speedster, at 34 very much in the December second week of his career, has this sort of reputation. Even if he doesn't make things happen, the mere possibility of having a Shami in the XI is akin to that of a solid fixed deposit in the bank during a bear run. He's a totally bankable bowler; not only safe as houses but also capable of conjuring magic. With Jasprit Bumrah in the set-up, India's ceiling is already high. But when both of them operate in tandem, the floor and the ceiling raise. It's why the 2023 World Cup, despite the unhappy ending, is a happy memory for the scores of fans who followed the hosts' sojourn either in the stands or via TV. In a country where there is a cult around batters and column inches dedicated to the cricketers who score runs, Shami was instrumental in making bowling look cool. It's a similar story in red-ball cricket. Remember Virat Kohli's emotionally-charged 'they should feel hell?' line from the 2021 Test against England? Or the countless times when India won a match they had no right to or when India won a series home or away? Shami has been ever present, like a homing beacon. Then, cruelly, the light left the building. With it, India's imposing records began to fade away. Home Tests were squandered. The BGT was surrendered. Sure, they did a win T20 World Cup in his absence but sentences beginning with 'If Shami was there, this...' had become de rigueur. There was a sense of fear during rehab, but I've crossed that phase: Mohammed Shami At 7.00 PM on Tuesday, he took his first steps literally in his second innings of his as he opened the bowling for the hosts in the third T20I against England. The seam position was there, the ball hooping away after pitching. When his work for the night was done, he had given away none for 25 in three overs. Nothing flash, nothing bad. Just another pit stop towards getting back to elite cricket after 14 months and change of picking injury, rehab, comeback, setback on an endless loop. There's no word yet on how his body has recovered post the three overs but the rest staying constant, expect Shami to feature in one of the next two games (Pune or Mumbai). It's all part of increasing his competitive workload and building his match fitness leading to the Champions Trophy next month. That's what it all boils to, right now. Forget the series in England in June-July. Forget the home winter later this year. For India, it's needs must and there's an urgent need to get Shami back up to speed when the team lands in Dubai in a fortnight or so. With question marks over Bumrah's fitness and Mohammed Siraj sent to the naughty step after a middling couple of series, a fit and ready Shami will solve a couple of problems in one go. Tuesday night, in that context, was the first step in the process. The audition will continue in other Indian towns including Nagpur, Cuttack and Ahmedabad in the ODI series where he will be bowling greater loads and spending more time on the field. Ace some of those tests and he will be as good as new, like the locks on his head.

Odisha HC fines Puri Jagannath temple administration for 25-year delay in property dispute case

CUTTACK: Taking exception to the inordinate delay in filing appeal against a trial court order, a single judge bench of Orissa High Court imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on Shri Jagannath Temple Management Committee with a directive to deposit the amount with the High Court Bar Association Advocates Welfare Trust within two weeks. The Civil Judge Senior Division (Puri) passed an ex parte order regarding a property of Lord Jagannath at Chudanga Sahi in Puri town. When none appeared on behalf of the temple despite summons the trial court passed the ex parte order on a resident of Puri, Ranjan Kumar Sahoos title suit for ownership of the pucca residential house-cum-shop rooms over 34 decimal land on June 21, 1994. The managing committee filed an appeal against the trial court order along with a plea seeking condonation of the delay in 2019 and the District Judge (Puri) passed order condoning the delay of 25 years on February 7, 2020. The order of District Judge (Puri) was challenged in the high court in a civil revision petition (CRP) by Sahoo on March 12, 2020 and Senior advocate Susanta Kumar Dash argued on his behalf. Considering the CRP, Justice MS Raman set aside the order on January 24, observing, The managing committee has approached the court after lapse of more than 25 years. No suggestion even is placed on record before the learned District Judge that action was taken or contemplated to have been taken against the erring officials/members of the managing committee. For this reason also, the order dated 07.02.2020 of the District Judge, Puri is held to be infirm and untenable in the eye of law. Justice Raman further observed that the order of the District Judge deserves to be set aside as no plausible reason was ascribed by the managing committee which prevented it to approach the court within prescribed period. In the affidavit of the administrator of temple managing committee, the plea was taken that he could come to know about the Civil Judge Senior Division (Puri) order only on September 10, 2019 - after 25 years.

Odisha Set for a Golden Era of Development, Says CM Mohan Charan Majhi

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday outlined his government's ambitious goals for the next five years, declaring that the state is on the brink of a golden era in its development. With strategic investments planned across key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture, the state is set to undergo a transformative phase. These announcements were made during the Republic Day celebrations in Cuttack, marking the beginning of a new era focused on welfare, development, and empowerment for all sections of society. In our very first state cabinet meeting, held just an hour after I took the oath of office on June 12, 2024, we made key decisions aimed at accelerating Odishas development, said Chief Minister Majhi. Among these were the opening of Shri Mandir's four doors, the launch of the Subhdra Yojana for women's empowerment, the establishment of a Rs 3,100 per quintal support price for farmers' paddy, and the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana in the state. With these goals accomplished, we are now focused on education reforms, infrastructure projects, and the empowerment of our tribal communities, he added. The CM said the state focused on skill development which will serve as the key driver of economic growth. Through the states From Skill to Demand initiative, the government aims to create 100,000 new jobs by attracting investments in industries such as IT, semiconductors, steel, and agriculture-based sectors, he observed. To further boost job creation, the state government has approved an investment of Rs 2 lakh crore, which is expected to generate over a million jobs across various sectors, including IT, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism, the CM added. With collaborative efforts from both the central and state governments, Odisha is poised for rapid development over the next five years. This period will see significant growth in the states infrastructure, economy, and social sectors. Blow to BJD leader: Supreme Court orders Odisha govt to respond within 4 weeks in double murder case

Bhubaneswar : The Mahanga double murder case, which has entangled prominent Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Pratap Jena, has taken a significant turn with the Supreme Court of India directing the Odisha government to submit a formal response within four weeks. The order, issued earlier this week, comes after a petition was filed by Ranjit Baral, the son of Kulamani Baral, one of the victims in the high-profile case. Ranjit Baral had approached the Apex Court seeking justice for the brutal killing of his father, Kulamani Baral, and his associate, Dibyasingha Baral. The petition raised concerns over the investigation process by the states Crime Branch and called for a transparent judicial review. With the case continuing to attract public attention, the Supreme Court emphasised the need for the Odisha administration to respond comprehensively, highlighting the urgency of addressing public and familial demands for justice. The Mahanga double murder has become a flashpoint for political tensions, given Pratap Jenas involvement. Kulamani Baral, a prominent BJP leader and the block chairman of Mahanga, was killed alongside his associate Dibyasingha Baral on January 2, 2021. The two men were tragically hacked to death by unidentified assailants while travelling on a motorbike near Jankoti village, under Mahanga block in Cuttack. The brutal murders shocked the local community and ignited widespread speculation, with many alleging political motives behind the killings. The Baral family has long claimed that the murders were orchestrated on the orders of Pratap Jena, a charge that has added significant political weight to the case. Earlier, in 2022, the High Court of Orissa had given Pratap Jena a clean chit in the case, ruling in his favour after he challenged a lower courts decision to take cognizance of offenses against him. The decision was controversial, with critics arguing that the case had not been thoroughly investigated. However, the Supreme Courts recent intervention has reopened the matter, underscoring the importance of ensuring that justice is served in a fair and transparent manner. The investigation was further complicated when Prafulla Biswal, the prime accused in the case, was found dead under mysterious circumstances. This has only added to the intrigue surrounding the case, leading many to question whether the investigation was being influenced by political pressure or other external factors

Odisha HC notice to SJTA chief on PwD access to Srimandir

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has issued notice to the chief administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) on a petition seeking intervention for making arrangements for free movement of wheelchair-bound differently-abled devotees within the temple complex. The division bench of Acting Chief Justice Arindam Sinha and Justice MS Sahoo issued the notice on the petition filed by Mrinalini Padhi, a high court lawyer. Padhi sought direction to SJTA to implement the assurance given by the temple authority in their affidavit before the Supreme Court to provide access to the wheelchair-bound devotees in the Jagannath temple, as mentioned in the order November 4, 2019. Padhi also sought direction to SJTA to provide access to the wheelchair-bound persons to have a darshan of the Lord. Appearing in person, Padhi submitted that the temple administration had stated to the Supreme Court that special arrangements are being made, for differently-abled persons to enter the temple. She relied on the temple managing committees September 27, 2018 resolution extracted in an interim order passed by the Supreme Court on November 4, 2019. Additional government advocate Debasis Tripathy submitted that chief administrator SJTA may be called upon to answer. Accordingly, the bench said, As such we require chief administrator SJTA to answer. Issue notice, and fixed February 12 as the next date. As mentioned in the Supreme Courts 2019 order, the SJTA had assured that for hassle-free darshan of the deities by differently-abled persons, special arrangements were being made. Orissa HC imposes Rs 5,000 fine on OTDC for seeking adjournments without filing reply to petition

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has imposed Rs 5,000 fine on Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC) for seeking adjournments instead of replying to notice on a petition. The court had issued the notice on September 10 to OTDC on a petition filed by Asimamitra Sahu whose compulsory retirement from service order was issued when he was the manager of OTDC. The managing director of OTDC issued the order as part of disciplinary proceeding against Sahu for misconduct, negligence in duty, disobedience of orders of the authority, insubordination, etc., on August 17, 2024. Sahu challenged the order on the ground that it was allegedly issued without taking into consideration his reply to show cause notice. On November 13, 2024, the court had to adjourn hearing on the matter as nobody appeared on behalf of either state govt or OTDC. Subsequently, adjournment was sought by the OTDC counsel on three dates for filing the reply. When the case was taken up on January 20, the OTDC counsel again sought one weeks time to file counter affidavit. Irked over it, Justice SK Panigrahi said, One week time is granted to the OTDC authorities for filing of counter affidavit subject to payment of cost of Rs 5,000. The said cost shall be paid to the petitioner within a period of one week from today failing which, the OTDC authorities shall be held for contempt of court. The matter has been listed on February 14. Sahu has in his petition sought the courts direction for his reinstatement in service and extend him all the benefits.

Parakram Diwas: Honouring Netajis legacy in the heart of Odishas history

As the nation gears up to celebrate Parakram Diwas 2025, all roads lead to Cuttack, Odishabirthplace of one of Indias most indomitable leaders, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The historic Barabati Fort, which serves as the venue for this years celebrations, stands as a silent witness to centuries of Odishas history. Born on January 23, 1897, Subhas Chandra Bose was the son of Janakinath Bose, a lawyer who had migrated to Cuttack, Odisha in the 1880s. The city, with its rich history and vibrant intellectual traditions, shaped the formative years of a boy who would grow to challenge the might of the British empire. In January 1909, Subhas Chandra Bose joined the Ravenshaw Collegiate School, Cuttack. This monumental stage of his life marked the beginning of an intellectual and moral awakening. Bose was deeply influenced by the visionary teachings of his headmaster, Beni Madhab Das, who instilled in him a sense of purpose and integrity. Complementing this foundation were the philosophical teachings of Ramkrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekanand and Sri Aurobindo Ghosh, whose ideals of nationalism and self-realization became guiding principles for Bose throughout his life. Odishas illustrious history of student activism also intertwines with Netajis rise. In 1939, when Bose was elected as President of the Indian National Congress in Tripuri, he was supported by many young leaders, including Harekrushna Mahtab, who later became the Chief Minister of Odisha. Mahtab, as a young student leader, actively participated in the session, reflecting Odishas enduring spirit of resistance and reform. Parakram Diwas, instituted to celebrate the stellar contributions of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, has evolved into a national festival of unity and courage. The first edition in Kolkata highlighted Netajis lively connection to the city, where he served as the Mayor and left a lasting legacy as a fearless leader. The 2024 celebrations at the Red Fort in Delhi paid tribute to the trials of the Indian National Army (INA), marking a climactic chapter of Indias freedom struggle. In 2025, the celebrations return to where it all beganCuttack, the city that nurtured Netajis aspirations and shaped his revolutionary outlook. While Delhis Red Fort symbolizes the culmination of Indias struggle, Barabati Fort reflects its genesis, where the seeds of Netajis steadfast determination were first sown. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was an embodiment of pristine purity. Like a meteor, he rose up the Indian skies and illuminated the horizons with his luminous personality. The humble beginning of Netajis journey as an intrepid leader began in Cuttack; he continues to inspire the youth of Odisha and beyond. His life is a testament to the ideals of resilience, innovation, and a fiercely patriotic commitment to the nation. Despite being born into a rich family, Netaji chose a path of self-sacrifice and discipline. His resignation from the Indian Civil Services to join the freedom movement exemplifies the courage to prioritize values over personal gain. Netajis leadership left a deep impact on our nation building. Netaji was a towering leader with an unwavering faith in the greatness of India. He envisioned an India free from the divisions of caste, language, religion and region, united by the thread of a sublime national unity. He said, Though geographically, ethnologically and historically, India presents an endless diversity to any observer, there is nonetheless a fundamental unity underlying this diversity. It was his deep commitment towards promoting the essential unity of India that prompted Mahatma Gandhi to write: The greatest achievement of the INA under the leadership of Netaji was to gather under one banner men of all religions and races of India and to infuse into them the spirit of solidarity and oneness, to the utter exclusion of all communal and parochial sentiments. It is an example we should emulate. Netaji exemplifies the ideals of resilience, embedded in a non-dogmatic and non-doctrinaire approach. The INA he set up was a product of his unconventional and alternative approach to secure the countrys freedom. Netaji inspired INA with three powerful words, which became their credo: ITTEFAQ, ITEMAD aur QURBANI Ekta, Viswas aur Thyag Unity, Faith and Sacrifice. In the Amrit Kaal, if our Amrit Peedi follows these ideals of Netaji, they can help India attain her destined greatness, which Honble Prime Minister has articulated in his vision of a Vikasit Bharat by the centenary of the countrys Independence. This shall be the greatest tribute, we can pay to the memory and sacrifice of Netaji. The 2025 edition is poised to reflect the soaring ambitions of our youth. It is set to be an extraordinary celebration, offering a rich tapestry of cultural and historical experiences over three days. Key features of this years celebrations include, cultural performances, immersive exhibits and sand art displays showcasing Netajis life. Today, the youth of Odisha stand at the forefront of preserving a glorious legacy and forging their own paths toward national service and excellence. For Odishas youth, Netajis life underscores the importance of quest for greatness while staying rooted in the ethos of service and integrity. His early struggles and later achievements were rooted in discipline, thirst for knowledge, and relentless drive to serve the motherland. Odishas youth can emulate his strong determination by channelling their energies to make their mark in varied areas of nation building, while making Odisha as one of the progressive and forward-looking states in the country to realise the national vision of development. When the sun sets over Barabati Fort, the echoes of Jai Hind will resonate, reminding us of a leader whose life was shaped by Cuttacks soil and whose legacy continues to inspire a billion hearts. In this Parakram Diwas, we not only celebrate Netaji but also reaffirm our commitment to the values that he stood for, making his vision of a strong and united India ever more relevant. Shami's comeback in focus as team India prepare for England challenge

Kolkata: Fit-again pacer Mohammed Shami's comeback would be keenly watched when the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian T20 team takes on an evenly-matched England in a five-match series starting here on Wednesday, aiming to make up for the recent Test disasters that have caused considerable turmoil and heartbreak. The white-ball rubber, comprising five T20Is and three ODIs after that, presents an ideal platform for both the teams to experiment with combinations and assess form before next month's Champions Trophy. Shami, despite missing four matches, emerged as India's leading wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023 with 24 scalps, including a sensational 7/57 in the semifinal against New Zealand at the Wankhede. Interestingly, the pacer has claimed the same number of wickets -- 24 at an average of 29.62 -- in his limited T20I career and will aim to improve on that while proving his fitness. Shami was sidelined after the lost final against Australia on November 19, 2023 due to an ankle injury that required surgery. The recovery from that was followed by swelling on his left knee during the domestic comeback some weeks back. Following his inclusion in India's Champions Trophy squad, Shami's return will garner national attention. With pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah nursing a back injury and his Champions Trophy participation doubtful, Shami's comeback assumes greater significance. The 34-year-old made his competitive return in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, guiding them to their first win of the season with a seven-wicket haul. He followed it up with impressive performances in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (11 wickets) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (five wickets). Shami's T20I career has been sporadic, with just 23 appearances since his debut in 2014. His last outing in the format was against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal. With the Rohit Sharma-led Indian Test set-up still reeling from a horror tour of Australia, a good performance from the T20 side has become imperative especially after the Board had to step in to reinforce diktats on team discipline. Axar's new beginning ============== All-rounder Axar Patel will debut as India's vice-captain in the T20I format. He has been rewarded for his stellar all-round contributions in India's triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in the Caribbean last year. Axar played a crucial knock of 47 off 31 balls in the final against South Africa and took nine wickets at an average of 19.22 across eight matches. The Gujarat player has already outlined his vision for India's middle order, emphasising a flexible approach with players floating between No. 3 to 7 depending on match situations. Curious case of Sanju Samson All eyes will also be on Kerala's Sanju Samson, who faces another critical juncture in his career after being omitted from India's Champions Trophy squad. He was subsequently ignored by Kerala selectors for their Ranji Trophy match against Madhya Pradesh. The wicketkeeper-batter has proven his mettle several times, becoming the first Indian to score successive T20I centuries in the recent series against South Africa being a case in point. Promising all-rounder Nitish Reddy, who scored his maiden Test century against Australia in December at Melbourne, has also earned a spot in the squad, giving the team another option pace-bowling all-rounder along with the redoubtable Hardik Pandya. England's fresh start For the Jos Buttler-led England, the series marks a new chapter under head coach Brendon McCullum, who signed a three-year contract following Matthew Mott's resignation following their T20 World Cup exit. Known for revolutionising Test cricket with his aggressive 'Bazball' approach, McCullum will now seek to replicate that success in the limited-overs format. It would not be a new territory for the New Zealand great, who was also at the helm of Kolkata Knight Riders after playing for the franchise in the inaugural IPL. England will miss key players Reece Topley, Sam Curran, and Will Jacks, but promising 21-year-old Jacob Bethell, who impressed in the ODI series against the West Indies last year, will look to shine. Bethell has averaged 57.66 and struck at 167.96 in his seven T20I appearances. Like Shami, England's fiery pacer Jofra Archer will be under the spotlight as he returns from injury to lead their pace attack ahead of the Champions Trophy. But conditions in India, with the possibility of heavy evening dew, could pose a challenge for bowlers. The squad also includes pace bowler Mark Wood following his recovery from a right elbow injury. After Wednesday's game, the series would move to Chennai for the second T20I (January 25), followed by matches Rajkot (Jan 28), Pune (Jan 31) and Mumbai (February 2). The ODI leg will start in Nagpur on February 6, followed by Cuttack (February 9) and Ahmedabad (February 12). Teams (from) India: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Axar Patel (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel (wk). England: Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook (vc), Phil Salt (wk), Jacob Bethell, Liam Livingstone, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Jamie Smith, Adil Rashid, Saqib Mahmood, and Mark Wood. Match starts: 7pm.

Odisha deputy CMs IA in a case challenging his election from Patnagarh rejected

CUTTACK: The Orissa High Court has rejected BJP MLA and deputy chief minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deos interlocutory application (IA) seeking intervention against refusal of the collector of Balangir to provide him certain documents required to file a written statement in reply to the petition that has challenged his election from Patnagarh constituency. Saroj Kumar Meher, the sitting BJD MLA, who lost to Singh Deo filed the election petition seeking declaration of the election of the deputy CM as void on the ground of improper acceptance of his nomination papers by the returning officer in spite of noncompliance with the statutory provisions. Meher sought quashing of Singh Deos election for nonfurnishing the detailed and correct particulars of his movable and immovable assets, nondisclosure of criminal cases pending against him, nondisclosure of the correct amount of his bank accounts and false declaration of his income tax returns for the last five years. On August 8 last year, after a preliminary hearing the high court issued notice to Singh Deo to file a written statement. In his IA, Singh Deo said he had through his lawyer applied for certain documents as per the Right to Information Act, 2000 for preparation of written statement by him. But the public information officer (PIO), Balangir had not supplied the documents-certified copies. The information of the documents sought for cannot be provided as the election petition was pending before the high court in view of guidelines of ECI, the PIO had noted, but clarified that they can be supplied only after an high court order. However, Justice Ananda Chandra Behera rejected the IA observing, when the collector Balangir is not a party to the petition, then the question of giving any direction for providing any document to the respondent does not arise.

Govt land in Cuttack slums being sold off on Jaga Mission promise

CUTTACK: In a major scam, brokers have been selling government land at Dhabaleswar Gada slum in CDA locality to people on the pretext of eventually getting their names registered under Jaga Mission. The matter came to light recently when two slum inhabitants Prabhat Pani and Trinath Ojha lodged an FIR with CDA Phase II police against three persons - Nayana Nayak, Mamata Nayak and Dushasan Nayak - alleging the three demolished their asbestos houses after they failed to pay extra money to them for including their names under Jaga Mission. As per sources, instead of registration of sale deed, these government plots are being illegally sold through stamp papers of Rs 10 denomination. Several people are getting lured to buy these plots as the area has all the basic facilities like road, electricity and drinking water provided by the civic body. The brokers, sources said, have been demanding Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh each for land measuring around 1,225 sq ft. The illegal practice has been openly going on since the last several years under the very nose of the corporation but no action has been taken as yet. As per the government records, the slum had only around 56 houses before 1999. The civic body had around two years back rehabilitated around 100 families after evicting them from Petanala and Kali Vihar slums. During that time, it had also demolished close to 50 concrete houses that had been illegally constructed in the locality. However, going by the present situation, the area now has over 300 houses with sale and purchase of government land continuing unabated. Meanwhile, police have registered a case against the said persons basing on a video clip containing the conversation between the buyers and land brokers. The accused are currently at large and efforts are underway to nab them, police said. Contacted on the issue, CMC mayor Subhas Singh said police would take necessary action against the accused as a case has already been registered against them.

Spanish Woman Returns to Odisha to Find Biological Mother After 20 Years

Bhubaneswar: Sneha, a Spanish citizen, has returned to India in search of her biological mother, who had abandoned her and her brother 20 years ago. However, 21-year-old Sneha is running out of time as she has to return to Spain on Monday for her educational commitments. The researcher in children's education wanted to trace her roots and reached India with scanty information about her past. Her Spanish parents Gema Vidal and Juan Josh supported her in her quest and Gema accompanied Sneha to her home state. They had adopted Sneha and her brother Somu in 2010 from an orphanage in Bhubaneswar, where they were kept after their mother Banalata Das abandoned them in 2005. The purpose of my journey from Spain to Bhubaneswar is to find my biological parents, especially my mother. I want to find her and meet her. I am fully prepared for the journey even if it is difficult, Sneha told PTI. Asked if she would chide her biological mother for abandoning her, Sneha remained mum. She was only over a year old, and her brother was just a few months old at that time. Accompanied by Gema, a yoga teacher in Zaragoza city of Spain, Sneha arrived in Bhubaneswar on December 19 last year and they have been staying in a hotel. Somu, however, could not come as he was busy with some work in Spain. If they do not find Sneha's biological mother by Monday, they will come back in March for a longer stay. We have to return to Spain as Sneha has joined a training programme which should not be discontinued. If we do not get Banalata in the next 24 hours, we will come back to Bhubaneswar in March, Gema said. Banalata had abandoned Sneha and Somu at their rented house in Nayapally area in Bhubaneswar in 2005. Banalata's husband Santosh, who worked as a cook in a private firm, had earlier abandoned his family, which comprised his wife, and four children, including Sneha and Somu. Later, Banalata also left the rented house with another son and daughter, leaving behind Sneha and Somu. The house owner later informed the police and they were shifted to an orphanage. In 2010, Sneha, then more than five years old, and Somu, around four years old, were legally adopted by the Spanish couple. Sneha is very responsible and educated. She is the joy of our house. She is our life, Gema said. Gema had earlier revealed to Sneha and Somu about their roots in Odisha and that they were adopted. She is well educated and conducting research, so she decided to locate her biological mother and I accompanied her to this place, Gema said. During their frantic search in Bhubaneswar, Gema and Sneha came across a retired teacher of Rama Devi Women's University, Sneha Sudha Mishra, who helped them find out the names of her parents. We found out about her parents' names from the house owner in Nayapally and later the names were verified with the police and the orphanage, Mishra said. With the help of Mishra, Sneha and Gema met city Commissioner of Police Dev Datta Singh, who assigned the job of locating Banalata Das and Santosh Das to two police personnel Anjali Chhotray and Gangadhar Pradhan. We have found out that Banalata Das and Santosh are from Badamba-Narsinghpur area in Cuttack district. We have engaged police and panchayat functionaries to locate them, Inspector Anjali Chhotray said.

Why just-retired Ashwin gets more pension than Kambli?

India ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shocked the cricketing world with his sudden retirement announcement on Wednesday. Announcing his decision to call it quits, Ashwin said, This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level. His retirement from international cricket sparked a wide range of discussions. One among them is why Ashwin gets paid more in pension by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) than former player, Vinod Kambli, while both of them played for India at the international level. Here's why: The spin wizard played 106 Tests on top of his 116 ODI and 65 T20I appearances. On the other hand, Kambli, appeared in 17 Tests and 104 ODIs for India. Playing in 287 international matches, Ashwin bagged 765 wickets, while amassing 4,394 runs. Meanwhile, Kambli, who played his last Test in 1995 against New Zealand in Cuttack has amassed 3,561 runs in 121 matches with a lone ODI wicket to his name. As per updated BCCI rules, a former Test player, who played for India would get a monthly pension of Rs 60,000, while a former first-class (FC) player would get Rs 30,000. Additionally an FC player, who retired before 2003 would get Rs 45,000. The board significantly increased the pension amount in June, 2022. But why do Kambli and Ashwin have a pay parity when both played Tests? According to rules, a player who appeared in less than 25 international Tests is considered as a first-class player. Kambli, with only 17 international Test appearances, falls in the category. Notably, Kambli garnered 9,965 first-class runs at an average of over 59, among the highest in the format. However, the distinction in category allows him to get less pension than Ashwin or other former Test players.

Tailor's tag leads to arrests in Odisha woman's murder case

Cuttack: A tailor's tag on a blood-stained shirt found near the crime scene helped the Odisha Police to crack a mysterious murder case and arrest three people, an officer said. The police on December 13 recovered the body of a 35-year-old woman on the banks of Kathjodi river in Cuttack under Kandarpur police station. The deceased remained unidentified and nobody lodged any complaint at any police station in the state. The police had no clue other than getting a weapon of offence a chopper. It was a big challenge for the police to crack the case, said Cuttack DCP Jagmohan Meena. Meena said though tattoos were found on both the hands of the deceased woman, they could not help her identification. One blood-stained shirt and pant were found on the water body near the spot. It was found that both the wearing apparel had a tag of 'New Star Tailors' stitched, he said. This clue was focused upon. Around 10 tailors with this name or similar name in Odisha were verified and their tag design was compared with the tag of the shirt and pant found at the spot. However, there was no match found. A tailor in Ganjam district informed that such kind of tags are being used in Gujarat, Meena said. The DCP said the Gujarat police was contacted and they found such a tailor in Surat. The tailor's tag had a number '3833' which was matched and upon search, it was seen that the shirt was stitched for one person named 'Babu'. There was no other detail available. However, the tailor gave one important clue that he had to return Rs 100 to the customer 'babu' but he did not have the change. So, he transferred Rs 100 on the e-wallet of one mobile number. That number was contacted and it was found that he is a friend of 'babu'. Details of 'Babu' were received. He was found to be Jaganath Duhuri (27) @ Babu @ Bapi of Kendrapada. It was found that he (Babu) was going back to Surat by train. The train was passing through Rayagada when he was nabbed, Meena said. On further verification and interrogation, it was found that he was the brother-in-law of the deceased. He also revealed that he committed crime with the help of his brother Balaram Duhuri and cousin Hapi Duhuri. All three have been apprehended, police said. Balaram Duhuri was the husband of the deceased woman. The motive of the crime is chronic marital dispute between the deceased and her husband. Balaram was doubting that the deceased was having an extra-marital affair with someone, the DCP said.

Bhubaneswar: Indias celebrated sprinter Dutee Chand on Friday narrowly escaped a serious car accident near OMP Square in Cuttack while returning to state capital Bhubaneswar from Jajpur. A speeding truck collided with her vehicle, causing significant damage. Displaying quick thinking, Dutee pursued the truck after the driver attempted to flee and managed to stop it near the Kathajodi Bridge. She promptly alerted the authorities, and officers from Madhupatna Police Station arrived at the scene, seizing the truck and detaining the driver for questioning. Dutee, who was accompanied by a friend, reported that the driver not only hit her vehicle but also hurled verbal abuses and behaved inappropriately. Although unhurt, Dutee expressed concerns about road safety and driver misconduct, emphasizing the risks motorists face on busy roads. We were on our way to Bhubaneswar from Jajpur. Near OMP Square, just before reaching Cuttack Link Road, a truck driver was honking aggressively at us. When we looked out, he was shouting abuses. We gave him way, but he intentionally rammed our vehicle and sped off. I chased him down near Kathajodi Bridge and called the PCR. The police arrived swiftly and ensured our safety, Dutee recounted. The driver has been detained, and his vehicle seized. Considering how forcefully he hit our car, I believe we were fortunate to be in a BMW. The outcome could have been much worse in a less sturdy vehicle, she added.

These projects aim to enhance operational efficiency and address congestion on critical railway routes. In Cuttack district, a 10.89-km rail flyover connecting Rajathgarh, Radhakishorepur, and Machhapur railway stations will be built at an estimated cost of Rs.268.92 crore. In addition, a Rs.240-crore project for a 5.5-km rail flyover on the Raipur-Vizianagaram line under the Waltair division of East Coast Railway (ECoR) has been approved. The flyover will streamline train traffic along the Singapore Road-Rayagada section, known for its capacity constraints and bottlenecks. A railways statement highlighted the seamless merging of trains with the loop line at Singapur Road, enhancing operations on this energy, mineral, and cement corridor. These flyovers will significantly improve train operations in the Khurda Road and Waltair divisions, resolving traffic bottlenecks at major junctions, a senior railway official said. The new infrastructure will provide dedicated paths for trains coming from different directions, ensuring smoother operations, reduced travel times, and an improved passenger experience. In another development, significant yard restructuring work is underway at Bhadrak railway station to boost train management and operational efficiency. This project, coupled with ongoing construction of a third railway line in the Bhadrak-Ranital section, will minimize train delays and enhance overall service quality. He shared these figures in a written statement presented during the State Legislative Assembly session. Between 2019 and November 2024, the state registered 769 cases of online trading scams, affecting 59,437 individuals. The number of reported cases peaked in 2023 and 2024, with 190 cases impacting 18,994 victims in 2023 and 472 cases defrauding 40,270 people in 2024 alone. Odisha to Take Action Against 196 Absentee Doctors amid Healthcare Crisis

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is set to take disciplinary action against 196 doctors who have failed to resume duty even after the expiry of their sanctioned leave. Odisha health minister Dr Mukesh Mahaling made this announcement on Monday during the State Assembly session. Responding to a question by BJP MLA Tankadhar Tripathy, the minister revealed that the absentee doctors belong to various cadres, including the Odisha Medical Health Service (OMHS), Odisha Medical Education Service (OMES), and Odisha Homeopathic Medical Service (OHMS). These doctors have reportedly cited multiple reasons for their prolonged absence. The government is initiating steps to address these absences and will take action as per established provisions, said minister Dr Mahaling. The issue is exacerbated by an overall shortage of medical professionals in the state. Replying to a query from BJD MLA Prashant Behera, Mahaling disclosed that 5,014 doctor positions remain vacant across Odisha, including 1,114 specialist posts. The ministers disclosures painted a grim picture of the healthcare crisis, particularly in rural areas. He noted that 375 community health centres (CHCs) across the states 30 districts are operating without any doctors. Ganjam district emerged as the worst-affected area, with 450 vacancies in general medical positions and an additional 87 specialist posts lying unfilled. Mayurbhanj follows closely with 309 vacant positions, including 87 specialist posts. Urban districts like Khurda and Cuttack are also grappling with significant shortages, reporting 12 and 281 vacancies respectively. The Odisha government has pledged to address these challenges by filling vacant posts and implementing stricter measures against absenteeism. However, the scale of the problem highlights deep-rooted structural issues in the states healthcare system, especially in ensuring equitable access to medical professionals in underserved regions. With rural areas bearing the brunt of these shortages, the state faces mounting pressure to devise long-term solutions to bridge the gap and improve healthcare delivery. Otherwise, the situation will worsen in the coming days, said Manoj Jena, a civil society activist.

Researchers draw out similarities between Konark and Simhachalam

World heritage structure Konark Temple located on the shores of Odisha and the Simhachalam Temple on a hill in APs Visakhapatnam have many sculptural similarities, a study by TORCH (Team of Research on Culture and Heritage) has determined. Speaking to this correspondent on Friday, Saikumar, a member of TORCH, pointed out that both Konark and Simhachalam temples had been commissioned by King Narasimha Deva I in the 13 th Century. The Sun Temple in Konark as well as Narasimha Swamy Temple in Simhachalam have Alasa Kanyas in various postures. These are the royal maids in Kalinga architecture. All 14 postures of Alasa Kanyas figure in the Simhachalam Temple. In particular, six pillars at Beda Mandapa behind the main temple have 24 exclusive Alasa Kanya sculptures, which are similar to Konark Temple. The beauty of sculptures at Simhachalam Temple is comparable to Konark and other Kalingan temples built by the Eastern Ganga dynasty, which ruled Trikalinga region from the 8 th Century to 15 th Century. Eastern Ganga rulers initially ruled their kingdom from Srimukhalingam in todays Srikakulam district, before shifting to Cuttack. The Eastern Ganga kings are also known as Jagannatha Sevaka or Jagannatha Putra. Several temples had been built in north Andhra by rulers of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, which need to be brought to light, Saikumar said. Deepak Kumar Naik, a history researcher with the Odisha unit of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage), explained that Alasa Kanya is a Surasundari in Kalingan temple iconography, representing an indolent maiden. These Surasundaris are depicted in various poses, primarily in early-medieval Kalingan temple architecture. Shilpa Prakasha, a medieval text on Kalinga temple architecture and design, describes 16 distinct types of Alasa Kanyas, including Torana, Mugdha, Manini, Dalamalika, Padmagandha, Darpani, Vinyasa, Ketakibharana, Matrmurti and Chamara. Simhachalam and Konark temples, both built during the reign of Eastern Ganga Emperor Narasimha Deva I, feature Alasa Kanyas prominently. Iconographic styles on the outer walls of both the temples are similar in many ways, suggesting that they may have been crafted by the same group of sculptors.

Orissa HC: Co-op Bank employees gratuity cannot be withheld

Bhubaneswar: The Orissa High Court ruled that Cuttack Central Cooperative Bank (CCB) must release the gratuity dues of Sarojini Dei, a retired employee, which had been withheld due to her role as a loan guarantor for two individuals. The court dismissed the bank's argument that her gratuity could be forfeited due to her guarantee liabilities, which had been secured through a fixed deposit. Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra, in his judgment, observed that Sarojini Dei had not agreed in writing to have her gratuity adjusted against the loan dues. Additionally, there were no provisions in Cuttack CCB's staff service rules to withhold gratuity after an employee's retirement, especially when their services were not terminated for misconduct. The judgment came after a similar ruling last month, where the court upheld the release of gratuity dues for another retired CCB employee, Nalinikanta Sarangi. Both cases involved the withholding of gratuity due to pending disciplinary or vigilance proceedings, which the court deemed unjustified in the absence of specific provisions in the bank's rules. Around 500 retired employees from various district cooperative banks in the state, including 45 retirees from the Orissa State Cooperative Bank, are reportedly awaiting their withheld dues.

Firdous claimed that the survivor could not be reached at present, expressing concern about her well-being and safety. Stating that such type of incidents had never taken place in Cuttack, which is densely populated, she said, If such incidents are happening now in this city, then it is a matter of worry. Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project to Transform Urban Transport by Dec. 2027

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project (BMRP), a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at modernising urban transport in Odishas capital, is projected for completion by December 2027. Designed to tackle traffic congestion and improve connectivity, the metro system promises a significant upgrade in public transportation across Bhubaneswar. The BMRP will see metro trains operating on elevated tracks, positioned approximately 13 meters above ground level, providing an unobstructed flow of traffic beneath. Notable areas such as Rajmahal, Jayadev Vihar, and Baranga will feature even higher elevations for the tracks, ensuring seamless integration with the citys current infrastructure. According to project plans, metro trains will be available every 10 minutes to accommodate commuters, aiming to ease daily travel challenges and promote a shift toward public transport. The metro fleet will consist of 13 trains, each comprising three coaches, capable of moving a significant number of passengers with frequency and efficiency. The groundwork for the BMRP is currently progressing with soil testing across various strategic locations. Soil samples, extracted from depths of 50 to 60 meters, are being sent to laboratories in Delhi and Cuttack for analysis. This process is essential for ensuring the safety and stability of the elevated tracks. According to officials, the soil testing phase is expected to be completed within the next two months. Upon completion of soil testing, the project will move to the foundation design phase. Odisha CM Orders High-level Probe into Alleged Mango Kernel Deaths in Kandhamal

Bhubaneswar : Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday ordered a Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC)-level inquiry into the recent deaths of two tribal women, allegedly after consuming mango kernel gruel in Kandhamal district. The incident has raised concerns over food security and traditional dietary practices in the tribal-dominated region. The fatalities were reported from Mandipanka village in Daringbadi block, where at least two women died and six others were hospitalised after consuming the gruel on November 1. Officials have since transferred the six affected women to SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack after their health deteriorated, underscoring the severity of the situation. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed a Revenue Divisional Commissioner-level inquiry into the mango kernel death issue in Kandhamal district, stated a spokesperson from the Chief Minister's Office. The investigation aims to examine the circumstances leading to the deaths and assess whether food shortages or other factors were involved. Despite receiving government-provided rations, many tribal communities in Kandhamal continue to incorporate mango kernels, bamboo flowers, and other wild edibles into their diet as part of their traditional culinary practices. Kumari Mallick, the Sarpanch of Gadapur Gram Panchayat, shed light on the cultural context, stating, Although people here are covered under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and receive rice as per law, they continue to consume mango kernels and bamboo flowers to preserve their cultural heritage. While some have reduced the use of mango kernels, others still enjoy dishes like mango kernel pudding and custard. Community members explain that while mango kernel-based foods are a traditional source of sustenance, these dishes can become toxic if not prepared properly or stored in unhygienic conditions. Health officials have warned that improper processing or storage can lead to poisoning, particularly when consumed long after preparation. The RDC-level probe will explore factors contributing to this tragic incident, including food scarcity, awareness of food safety, and the effectiveness of government welfare measures. As local and state authorities await the findings, the incident has sparked a broader conversation in mainstream and social media platforms about the balance between traditional dietary practices and public health in tribal regions.

Elephant Shot With Arrows Fighting for Life in Odishas Cuttack

Bhubaneswar : A wild elephant is clinging to life in the Narsinghpur block of Cuttack after being gravely injured by arrows, likely from a poaching attempt. The wounded animal was discovered at Raghupani Bandh during a regular forest patrol, prompting immediate alerts to senior authorities. Found with two arrows lodged in its body, the elephant sustained severe injuries and remains in critical condition. Responding swiftly, a team of forest officials from Dhenkanal arrived at the scene and successfully tranquilized the animal to initiate medical treatment. Veterinary experts and senior officials from Nandankanan Zoo in Bhubaneswar joined the efforts, bringing specialized equipment and medical supplies. Their plan is to keep the elephant sedated to alleviate its distress, allowing them to carefully assess its injuries and begin necessary interventions. Authorities are investigating whether poachers were responsible or if local farmers acted to prevent crop damage. Meanwhile, forest officials have heightened surveillance in the area and pledged to bring the culprits to justice. According to wildlife experts, the tragic case underscores the persistent threat of wildlife crime in the region and raises fresh concerns about protecting endangered species in Odishas forests.
