Couple gives away baby girl to AP couple due to poverty
BERHAMPUR: Battling acute poverty, a couple of Rayagada allegedly gave away their nine-day-old child to a family from Andhra Pradesh, in Nuapada Sahi village under Chandili police limits of the district. Even as the alleged baby sale incident in Balangir hogged the headlines, the Rayagada story has now come as another shocker. A notarised deed of adoption which facilitated the childs change of custody said it was carried out without any force, fraud, coercion and influence. The deed, however, was severely flawed. The natural mother Kumud Ganta (22) and her husband Rahul Dhanbadi (25), a driver by profession, allegedly gave away the newborn girl to a couple from Pedapenki village in Andhra Pradesh on November 11, nine days after her birth on November 3. On the day, the Rayagada district child Protection unit, along with social worker Satyapriya Pradhan visited the family and enquired about the incident. The child welfare committee (CWC) and the Women and Child Development (WCD) department also began a probe. We had information the baby was sold off. This, however, appears to be a case of illegal adoption caused by poverty. We are instructing the couple (from Andhra Pradesh) to present the child before the CWC. If the natural parents cannot take care of the baby, they must hand her over to the government, said Pradhan. Kumud claimed since her family does not have a ration card, it was deprived of PDS rice and other government benefits. The 22-year-old said acute poverty forced her to stay at her brothers house and buy rice from outside. My baby was not sold off. We gave her away because of our inability of raise the kid. The family adopted her, she said. Due to financial constraints, Rahul said, it was difficult on his part to manage the family with two children. Thats why I agreed to give away my newborn, he added. The source said, a woman of Kottapeta village in neighbouring AP came to know of Kumuds family and made the move for the alleged adoption. The woman frequents the Chandili area. When Kumud shared her familys hardships, the woman suggested they hand over the newborn to a childless relative of her. Accordingly, a deed of adoption was prepared in Rayagada. The natural parents of the infant and the couple from AP have been asked to be present before CWC on Wednesday.
Odisha Police trace lodge murder accused in prison of Kerala
BERHAMPUR: Nearly a year after the decomposed body of a 35-year-old woman was found in a lodge in Ganjams Baidyanathpur, Berhampur police has solved the murder mystery by tracing the accused in a jail of Kerala. Berhampur SP Sarvana Vivek M said the murder accused, Sameedmon AS (42), was lodged in a Kerala jail in connection with an NDPS case. A team of Baidyanathpur police brought Sameedmon on a two-day remand to Odisha on Monday. On Tuesday, the accused was taken to the lodge where he recreated the scene of the murder in presence of police. Sameedmon, a resident of Kerala, also revealed the chilling details of his crime. The SP said the body of Kamanapalli Krishna Veni of Visakhapatnam was found in the lodge in a decomposed state on November 25, 2023. On being questioned, the lodge manager said Veni accompanied by a man had booked the room two days back. When the man went missing without paying the rent, the lodge staff reached the room and found the woman lying dead on the bed. Subsequently, police sent the body for autopsy and registered a murder case basing on the circumstantial evidence. During investigation, police identified the man as Sameedmon but could not trace him. Last week, the cops came to know that the accused was lodged in a Kerala jail after being arrested in a NDPS case around four months back. A team of Baidyanathpur police then went to Kerala and brought Sameedmon to Odisha. The SP said Veni and the accused were divorced but living together. During mid-2023, the womans 19-year-old son from her first marriage was arrested by Visakhapatnam police in an NDPS case. Believing that her son was arrested because of Sameedmon, who was also involved in illegal drug trade, Veni used to fight with the accused regularly. Fearing that Veni might tell police about his involvement in drug trade, Sameedmon hatched a plan to eliminate her. The accused brought the woman to Berhampur on some pretext and killed her in the lodge. After committing the crime, he returned to Kerala and became involved in ganja trade till he was nabbed by police around four months back.

Odisha's Dongria tribals forced to consume tamarind seed gruel amid food scarcity
BERHAMPUR: As the mango kernel deaths in Kandhamal district continue to trigger political debate, not far away in Rayagada, similar consumption practices in the absence of adequate availability of foodgrains continue under the radar. Tribals of the district, mostly Dongrias residing in Niyamgiri hill, consume gruel made of tamarind seeds and the stem (centrepiece) of the Salap tree (Caryata urens). Says Sonali Nissaka (25), a Dongria woman of Niyamgiri Hill, consumption of gruel made of different seeds and stems is not a choice but a compulsion for her and others from her community. The Dongrias, she said, used to subsist on forest produce and shifting cultivation while a few also work as daily wage labourers. However, now the forest produce has dwindled and shifting cultivation ended. With no work back home, members of the particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) are migrating to other states. Social worker Bijay Das said the government, be it Central or state spend crores of rupees on welfare schemes of PVTGs, but condition of the PVTGs has not improved which forces them to depend on inedible There is no work available. We somehow manage with the PDS rice. Our lean period is from August to November. During this phase, work is not available due to rains and people have no money to buy rice once the PDS stock runs out, he said. In a bid to tide over such crisis, the tribals take to gruel made of seeds, he added. Kalamu Kadraka (60) of Kurli village, one of the 120 villages on Niyamgiri hill, said PDS rice is distributed among the beneficiaries once every two or three months in the area. Every beneficiary is given five kg rice per month. Is it enough for even two square meals? Kalamu questioned. This deprivation, the tribals say, prompts Dongrias to collect stems of Salap from the forest. They dry the stems and grind it properly. The powder is then put in an earthen pot to which water is added to make the gruel. Dr S Padhy who was posted in the area as a medical officer said, Salap stems are inedible and may cause stomach disorder and diarrhoea. The Dongrias were made aware of it but the practice continues, he said. However, sarpanch of Kurli panchayat Subardini Wadaka denied consumption of gruel made of Salap stems directly. He claimed the powder is a nutrient and is mixed with food like rice, maize and millet. He, however, kept mum on execution of welfare schemes and employment opportunities in the area. An official of Kalyansingpur block, on condition of anonymity, said the state government releases funds for executing welfare schemes on time but the utilisation leaves a lot to be desired. Consumption of gruel and water from springs is common among villagers of Niyamgiri but the administration has always presented a rosy picture of the area and its inhabitants. Since 2016, the officer said, Rs 66.24 crore has been spent by Dongria Kondh Development Authority on welfare schemes in the villages but the tribals still live in penury. Two decades, Rayagada too had witnessed deaths due to consumption of mango kernel gruel. Though, no such incident has been reported from the district of late, gruel made of Salap stem poses a grave risk for the Dongrias, the official added.

Odisha government asks DGP to probe assault on Sikkim man
BHUBANESWAR: The Odisha government has asked Director General of Police (DGP) YB Khurania to investigate the allegation against a traffic personnel of assaulting a native of Sikkim in Gopalpur. In a notification on Wednesday, the Home department requested the DGP to take necessary action in connection with the incident and submit an action taken report within 15 days. Khurania was also asked to consider the matter as extremely urgent. On November 3, Yogesh Sherpa (34), a differently-abled man from Sikkim, was allegedly assaulted by traffic personnel in Gopalpur. Taking cognisance of the matter, the chief ministers office (CMO) of Sikkim requested Odisha government to direct its officials, who are investigating the incident, to forward a report of the action initiated by them. The Sikkim government intervention came after Denzong Sherpa Association (DSA), a tribal organisation, wrote to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang and drew his attention towards the alleged assault on Sherpa. The DSA said Sherpa, who runs a momo stall in Balugaon, had visited Gopalpur with his friends for sightseeing when he was reportedly beaten up by the traffic personnel. He suffered serious injuries in the assault. On November 4, Berhampur police had refuted the allegation and said Sherpa in an inebriated state was travelling with a man on a two-wheeler. They avoided a routine vehicle check conducted by local traffic personnel at Sunda Chowk. After travelling some distance, Sherpa became unconscious due to excessive drinking and was admitted to MKCG medical college and hospital in Berhampur. He was later shifted to AIIMS in Bhubaneswar, said police. Following the allegation of assault, an additional SP-ranked officer was directed to conduct a detailed inquiry into the matter.

Court in Odisha issues warrant against former MP Rao, five others
BERHAMPUR: A court in Rayagada on Tuesday issued non-bailable warrants (NBW) against six persons including district BJD president and former MP N Bhaskar Rao in connection with the sensational murder of tribal leader and trustee of Maa Majhighariani temple Bhagirathi Mandangi nearly 14 years back. The court of SDJM Barsha Das issued the NBWs for the arrest of Rao, a former Rajya Sabha member, and five others while hearing a petition filed by Bhagirathis brother Jagannath Mandangi. Bhagirathi was murdered on December 15, 2010. His charred body with hands and legs tied was found floating in a dam in Andhra Pradesh. Earlier in 2021 and 2023, the Adivashi Mahasangha of Rayagada had intensified agitation demanding speedy and impartial inquiry in the murder case. Bhagirathis family and president of Adivashi Mahasangha Appalaswamy Kadraka had also demanded that the case be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They had alleged that police failed to bring the culprits into the ambit of investigation as they were members of BJD, which was the ruling party then. They also claimed that Bhagirathi was murdered as he detected and raised voice against irregularities in the temple management. Following the outcry, the then Odisha government had ordered a Crime Branch probe into the murder. However, no progress was made in the investigation. Aggrieved over the inordinate delay in probe, Jagannath filed the petition in Rayagada SDJM court in February this year. The petitioners counsel Samuel Tandi said the court issued the NBWs on the basis of evidence and statements of the witnesses. The case has been filed under sections 302, 201 and 34 of IPC. Despite repeated attempts, Rao was not available for comment.

BERHAMPUR: Amid a war of words between BJP and Opposition parties over deaths of two women due to consumption of mango kernel gruel in Kandhamal district, RDC (South) Roopa Roshan Sahoo along with collector Amrit Ruturaj started a probe into the incident on Wednesday. Sahoo visited Mandipanka village on the day and interacted with the families of the two who died and those who are undergoing treatment. The RDC said she will visit the village again on November 11 as part of the probe. On Tuesday, Ruturaj had also visited the village. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had ordered a probe by the RDC into the incident after allegations by the Opposition that tribals in the district are not being given rice under National Food Security Act. While the two women died on November 1, six others were hospitalised after consuming the mango kernel gruel in the village under Daringbadi block. Two of the six women were shifted to SCB Medical College and hospital in Cuttack after their condition worsened. CRUT revises speed limit of reckless Mo Buses, warns of strict against overspeeding
BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to check rash driving, the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) on Wednesday revised the speed limits of Mo Buses with Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra warning strict action against drivers found to be overspeeding. Mahapatra said in cities, Mo Buses will be allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 40 km/hr. On highways, the buses can travel up to 50 km/hr. The decision to revise the speed limits came a few days after a woman suffered serious injuries when a Mo Bus hit her in Chandrasekharpur area here. Interestingly, CRUT recently conducted an internal audit to check the driving ethics of its drivers and found out that Mo Buses were involved in 139 accidents in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Rourkela, Sambalpur, Puri and Berhampur in the last one year. CRUT operates Mo Buses in these six cities. In fact, seven persons were killed in road accidents involving Mo Buses in the last two years. In many instances, overspeeding by Mo Bus drivers was found to be the reason behind the accidents. Sources said after the audit, CRUT decided to reduce the speed limit of its buses and the same was proposed to the state government. Mo Bus drivers have been asked to travel at a speed of 35 km/hr at the places where metro rail or other construction works are underway to ensure safety of passengers as well as commuters. Around 475 buses ply in the six cities and each of them is equipped with a speed governor. Earlier, Mo Buses were allowed to travel at 50 km/hr in the city area and 60 km/hr on highways as per the speed limits set by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Apart from overspeeding, CRUT has also planned to curb drunk driving. We have 20 breath analysers. Family ostracised over land in Ganjam village

The family of 17 including two school children were ostracised by a kangaroo court of the village committee on August 23. This apart, a few members of the family worked as daily wagers at nearby places including IISER. The familys ordeal started when a few villagers tried to take over the land forcibly. The matted reached Golanthara police which managed to settle the issue by asking the two sides to reach a compromise. Maheshs family thought the worse was over. But the village committee, in a meeting, barred the family from the village. The diktat issued at the kangaroo court meant that the family was barred from buying essentials from shops and collect water from tubewells in the village. Even the children were barred from taking tuitions in the village. The committee also warned the villagers they would be imposed a fine of Rs 30,000 if they remained in contact with the family. Further the committee asked kewda bhati (processing units) not to buy flowers from the family. As if this was not enough, contractors were asked not to engage any member of the family in any work being undertaken at IISER. We showed the letter of compromise to shopkeepers, bhati owners and others but in vain, said Mahesh. The village has around 250 households and that of Mahesh is at the end of it. Fetching water from other villages is a tough task for us, said Maheshs daughter Garriamma. On Friday, the family was summoned to Golanthara police station on the direction of higher-ups. But as Mahesh and his family reached the police station, they were told that the IIC was out on patrolling duty. Refuting the familys allegations, village head Naidu N Dileshu said no family has been ostracised from the village. On September 15, PM Modi virtually launched these modern trains from Tatanagar, extending India's semi-high-speed rail network. The newly introduced routesTatanagar-Patna, Deoghar-Varanasi, and Tatanagar-Berhampurwill significantly enhance both intra- and inter-state connectivity. The Tatanagar-Patna Vande Bharat Express will complete the journey in approximately seven hours, running six days a week. Additionally, the Deoghar-Varanasi route, connecting two major pilgrimage centers, is expected to boost religious tourism and improve Jharkhand's railway infrastructure. These infrastructure projects reflect the Central Government's dedication to improving Jharkhands connectivity, industry, and overall development. While the state government under Hemant Soren's leadership has faced challenges in fully capitalizing on these advancements, the BJP is positioning itself to spearhead Jharkhands journey toward greater prosperity. The expansion of its cargo capacity from 30 lakh to 55 lakh tons underscores the government's long-term vision for Jharkhands role as a strategic hub for trade and exports. Industrial Growth and Economic Development Jharkhand's abundant resources have played a key role in the Central Governments drive for industrial growth. Initiatives like LPG bottling plants in Bokaro and Barhi have boosted local energy production and created job opportunities. The Sindri Nano Urea Plant addresses a crucial gap in the agricultural sector by reducing dependence on urea imports, benefiting farmers in Jharkhand and surrounding regions. The state's integration into major industrial frameworks like the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor and the Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor is set to accelerate industrial development and lower transportation costs, strengthening Jharkhand's economic foundation. Advancements in Education and Healthcare The Modi government's commitment to social development extends to improving education and healthcare in Jharkhand. Programs like Eklavya Model Residential Schools offer quality education to tribal children, helping bridge the gap in educational access in rural areas. PM SHRI Schools have modernized numerous schools, providing students with enhanced infrastructure, smart classrooms, and computer labs. Healthcare access has significantly improved with the establishment of AIIMS Deoghar, providing advanced medical services that previously required travel to distant cities. The Ayushman Bharat Scheme has provided free healthcare to millions, while Jan Aushadhi Kendras offer affordable medicines to the underprivileged. Empowering Tribal Communities Prime Minister Modis government has prioritized the empowerment of tribal communities through dedicated schemes in education, healthcare, and economic development. Projects like the construction of Birsa Munda Smriti Park and the GI tag recognition of Hazaribagh's Sohrai and Khovar art celebrate Jharkhand's rich cultural heritage. Jharkhand has three major enemies JMM, Congress and RJD: PM Modi
RANCHI: While addressing a 'Parivartan Yatra' at Jamshedpur, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Jharkhand has three major enemies: Congress, JMM and RJD. PM Modi had earlier announced 6 rallies in Jharkhand ahead of the assembly polls. The PM attacked the ruling alliance in the speech. RJD is taking revenge over the formation of Jharkhand and it is an open fact that the Congress hates Jharkhand. These people may go to any extent in greed of power and money, said Modi. The PM alleged JMM of supporting Bangladeshi and Rohingya infiltrators. Do you know why it happened? Because the ghost of Congress has entered into the JMM, and when the ghost of Congress enters into any party, appeasement becomes the only agenda of that party, said Modi. For this, first they sacrifice the interests of Dalits, tribals and backward society, the same is happening with JMM, he added. He added that although the JMM was established on the basis of tribal votes, today they are standing with Congress, who have snatched the forest land of tribals. Do you know that there is only one most dishonest party and family in this country? It is the Congress Party and the Congress family; all the streams of corruption originated from there only, he added. PM Modi said that Jharkhand was created with big dreams, but all these dreams got sacrificed to corruption. JMM people also get training from there. All of them have come from the Congress School of Corruption, said Modi. PM Modi landed at Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi on Sunday morning. He flagged off 6 Vande Bharat trains virtually from the airport. Due to heavy rains in Jamshedpur, PM Modi cancelled his trip to Tatanagar railway station, so he virtually flagged off the trains from Ranchi. PMs road show which was scheduled on Jamshedpurs Bishtupur Main Road was also cancelled due to the incessant rain. Later, however, the PM left for Jamshedpur from Ranchi via road. The Vande Bharat trains flagged off by PM Modi will run between Berhampur-Tatanagar, Rourkela-Howrah, Deoghar-Varanasi, Howrah-Gaya, Dumka-Howrah and Howrah-Bhagalpur. These trains will enhance religious tourism in the region by offering quicker transportation to pilgrimage destinations such as Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar (Jharkhand), Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Kalighat, and Belur Math in Kolkata (West Bengal).
