Varun Dhawan revisits his Koffee With Karan Season 6 remark Varuns latest comments brought back a moment from Koffee With Karan Season 6 in November 2018. During that episode, Karan Johar asked him whether he would switch careers with Ranbir Kapoor or Ranveer Singh. Varun answered, None, explaining that both actors had experienced box-office failures, while he had not faced one at that stage of his career. At the time, Varun had delivered a string of commercially successful films, including Student of the Year, Main Tera Hero, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, ABCD 2, Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Judwaa 2. Speaking on the latest episode of Koffee With Karan Season 9, the actor acknowledged concerns around objectification and the films portrayal of sexual assault, while also saying that she wishes she had spoken up more strongly during the making of the film. Directed by Buchi Babu Sana and headlined by Ram Charan, Peddi released in theatres on June 4, 2026. Following its release, the film faced criticism over the way Janhvis character was presented, with particular attention on camera shots focusing on her body and a romantic sequence that audiences questioned for its treatment of consent. Janhvi Kapoor says she takes responsibility for her part Reflecting on the controversy, Janhvi said, I felt many things, Karan. I think the reason I was so apprehensive to talk about it was because many people worked very hard on that film. I really didn't know what to say or if there was anything really to say. But it's important that I take ownership for my half of whatever that fiasco was because it weighs heavily on my conscience, the sort of negative impact a narrative like that can have on our society, specific to my gender. She went on to question whether she could have done more to challenge how her character was portrayed. Could I have done more? Could I have been more vigilant? Could I have made a bigger scene? A hundred percent, yes. Was it problematic? Was it extreme objectification? Did it even propagate sexual assault narratively? Yes, she said. Janhvi added that her focus now is on ensuring that she does not find herself in a similar situation again. The only thing I can do is to ensure that that doesn't happen again. I went through the beats of really beating myself up. I should have been more vigilant. I should have made a bigger scene, she added. Janhvi explains the challenges she faced during filming The actor also spoke about the dynamics of working on a film where she said, I don't like saying this because it sounds like I'm shifting blame. But you know what it's like, you feel like whatever the director says, be professional, listen to the director. So I was really navigating how to make things less problematic as best I thought, as and when information was becoming available to me. She further said, In the South, there very rarely is a bound script. And very rarely in those scripts do you see where the camera angles are. At the same time, Janhvi reiterated that she believes she could have used her position to speak up more. Having said that, I need to also take responsibility for my half of it. I do come from a place of privilege. I should have taken advantage of that because I'm going to get the criticism for being privileged anyway. So I might as well have leveraged it, she said. Janhvi calls the experience violating When Karan Johar asked whether she felt disappointed at the time or believed the filmmaker had not intended for things to unfold that way, Janhvi described the experience as violating. No, I feel like I get so conscious when I speak about this because I don't want to sound like I'm trying to be the victim here. I mean, it was a violating experience in a way, she said. Janhvi also revealed that she had expressed her discomfort during the filming process and even during post-production. The actors opened up about the disagreement that followed Bawaal being scheduled around the release of Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, with the conversation revealing how the professional disagreement turned into a personal fallout. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Bawaal stars Varun and Janhvi and was originally scheduled to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 27, 2023. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, directed by Karan Johar, was scheduled for a theatrical release the following day, July 28. Varun Dhawan says Karan Johar ghosted them Recalling the disagreement, Varun said, He just ghosted us and stopped talking. She knew you were fighting with her. I didnt know you were fighting with me. For one week, I dont think Karan was capable of fighting with me in my head. Janhvi then reminded Varun that Karan had called him a child during the disagreement. I tell my dad also, Dad, you are behaving like a child. I tell my mother also, Varun said. Karan responded that Varun could speak that way to his parents, while Varun maintained that he viewed their relationship similarly. It is taking one of the world's oldest and most culturally significant epic narratives and presenting it as a technologically ambitious, multi-part theatrical spectacle. The project raises a fascinating question. Could Ramayana become India's answer to Hollywood's biggest fantasy franchises? And more importantly, should Hollywood be paying attention? India already possesses something Hollywood spends billions trying to create One of the biggest challenges facing entertainment companies is developing intellectual property that audiences recognise and care about. Hollywood studios invest enormous sums in building cinematic universes, introducing characters, establishing fictional worlds and persuading audiences to return for sequels. Ramayana begins with an extraordinary advantage. Its characters and central narrative have existed in cultural memory for centuries. The epic has inspired literature, theatre, television, music, art and countless retellings across different countries and traditions. For millions of people, Rama, Sita, Lakshman, Hanuman and Ravana are already familiar figures. In commercial terms, that is an extraordinary foundation for a major cinematic project. The makers do not need to create awareness of the underlying story among Indian audiences. They need to persuade viewers that their interpretation is worth experiencing on the big screen. However, this advantage is accompanied by a unique responsibility. Unlike an entirely fictional cinematic universe, the Ramayana carries profound religious and cultural significance. Its characters cannot be treated simply as commercially exploitable intellectual property. The challenge is to combine the ambitions of a global blockbuster with sensitivity towards the traditions from which the story emerges. This is particularly important for viewers unfamiliar with the epic. A strong cinematic world can make an unfamiliar narrative accessible without requiring lengthy explanations. But the comparison with The Lord of the Rings also highlights another crucial factor. World-building succeeds when audiences feel that the environment is real within the logic of the story. Expensive sets and elaborate visual effects cannot compensate for an inconsistent cinematic vision. The financial equation: Bigger isn't always better Hollywood's largest franchises are supported by sophisticated commercial ecosystems. Their revenue comes not only from theatrical collections but also from streaming, television, licensing, merchandise, games and long-term franchise exploitation. They build commercial systems that can generate returns over many years. Whether Ramayana can create a comparable long-term model will depend on far more than its opening weekend. The sequel challenge A major advantage of a multi-part cinematic project is the possibility of building anticipation across instalments. Baahubali: The Beginning demonstrated how a compelling narrative cliffhanger could transform a sequel into a nationwide event. The Lord of the Rings showed how a sustained creative vision across multiple films could deepen audience engagement. For Ramayana, the first instalment must achieve two objectives simultaneously. It must deliver a satisfying theatrical experience in its own right while creating anticipation for the continuation. If audiences leave feeling that they have watched an incomplete film rather than a compelling chapter of a larger story, the sequel strategy could become a disadvantage. That would not necessarily threaten Hollywood's dominance overnight. But it could broaden the industry's understanding of where globally marketable cinematic properties can originate. There is also a creative opportunity. Rather than imitating Hollywood's storytelling formulas, Indian filmmakers could introduce international audiences to narrative traditions, visual identities and emotional sensibilities that feel genuinely different. That distinctiveness may ultimately prove more valuable than attempting to replicate an American blockbuster. The final verdict It would be premature to call Ramayana India's Avatar or The Lord of the Rings. Those franchises earned their reputations through their films' execution, audience response, commercial success and long-term cultural influence. Ramayana has yet to undergo those tests. But the ambition itself is significant. For years, Indian cinema has looked towards Hollywood for benchmarks in visual effects, production scale and international distribution. With Ramayana, the industry has an opportunity to demonstrate that its own stories can support cinematic spectacles of comparable ambition. The question is not whether India can spend enough money to compete with Hollywood. It is whether Indian filmmakers can combine technology, storytelling and cultural authenticity to create something that global audiences have never experienced before.
