Taapsee Pannu wanted to do a rom-com after intense roles; says, Theres a certain creative bankruptcy
Taapsee Pannu had often been associated with intense performances and hard-hitting stories, but the actor said she wanted to explore lighter genres, particularly romantic comedies. In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Taapsee said she had been waiting for filmmakers to look beyond the strong, intense characters she had frequently been offered. While discussing her filmography ahead of Gandhari, Taapsee said she would love to take up a fun romantic comedy. Please tell people, have mercy, give me something light. I would love to see you in a rom-com. I would love to do it too. The actor said the industry often became comfortable associating actors with a particular genre after they found success in it. Theres a certain kind of creative imagination that our industry is not that good with, she said. When we see a certain actor good with a certain kind of roles and genres and worlds, we just want to play safe and keep casting that actor in the same world. Taapsee revealed that she had rejected several investigation dramas and action films after Baby and Naam Shabana because she did not want to repeat similar roles. I can't begin to tell you the number of films I have turned down investigation films that I have turned down, like a lot. Action films that I turned down after Naam Shabana and Baby until now, she added. Because it just felt like theres a creative bankruptcy where you cant imagine a person if you're calling someone a good actor, not me, if anybody, a good actor then please put the faith in that person to be able to perform range. She also said her filmography did not necessarily reflect her capabilities. Its not my fault if I am only offered 10 intense films, she said. I will choose the best out of it and present that, but it will still be a strong woman, intense film because that's the only genre that people have started imagining me [in]. Taapsee cited Manmarziyaan as an example of her ability to carry a romantic story. If today someone goes out to pitch a love story with me, people can't imagine it. They don't want to greenlight it because they feel like, Taapsee in a love story? It's very difficult to imagine. I don't understand, she asserted. She also spoke about her experience with comedy in Khel Khel Mein. I literally did Khel Khel Mein for me to have fun, she revealed. I knew there were seven of us on the table. I just get to have some fun is why I did that film. Taapsee credited director Mudassar Aziz for trusting her with comedy and said filmmakers needed to give her more opportunities to explore different genres. Meanwhile, Gandhari, directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, featured Taapsee as Bani, a mother whose daughter was abducted. The film also starred Ishwak Singh, Jatin Sarna, Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Chhaya Kadam. Gandhari premiered on Netflix on September 3. The much-awaited thriller Haiwaan releases next Friday, September 11, and has already caught attention with its intriguing trailer and impressive star cast. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Shailaja Desai Fenn, one of the films producers, about its casting, the challenges of mounting the film and a lot more. At the very outset, she made it clear that Haiwaan offers much more than just thrills. She said, Haiwaan is a thriller, but its also a Priyadarshan film. Hence, it has all the elements emotions, humour, etc. in place. Its like a family entertainer. How did you get associated with Haiwaan? My husband, Satish Fenn, and I have been in the industry for more than 20-25 years. I started my career as a talent manager and continue to run that business successfully. We also produce ad films, so film production seemed like a natural progression for us. In 2024, we were shooting an ad for Kalyan Jewellers, which was directed by Priyan sir (director Priyadarshan). Thats how it all started. Priyan sir was very keen to make this film, and we joined hands to put it together. KVN Productions then came on board as the studio for the film, and we are very grateful to them. Later, Akshay sir and Saif sir also joined the project. Along the way, we also made a Malayalam film called Balan: The Boy, which released earlier this year. View this post on Instagram A post shared by KVN Productions (@kvn.productions) Your production house is called Thespian Films. How did you finalize that name for your banner? It was Satishs idea. Thespian is a term used to describe someone accomplished in theatre or cinema. We are here to make good films and back the kind of cinema we truly believe in. Hence, Thespian Films seemed like the right name for our banner. Haiwaan stars Boman Irani, whom you have managed for a long time. Was it easy to convince him to sign the film? I have been with Boman sir since 2005. I just told him, Sir, you have to be me in my film! Thats all (laughs). Boman sir was gracious enough to say, Yes, of course. No questions asked (smiles). Hes family. How was it working with a talent like Akshay Kumar? It was an absolute pleasure. Akshay sir is somebody you really look up to when it comes to commitment. Hes always on time and knows exactly what hes there for. He goes all out whenever hes attached to a project. Its been fabulous working with Saif Ali Khan sir as well. He has never played a blind man before, and the preparation that has gone into the role has been phenomenal. Moreover, some of the locations where we shot were not the easiest in terms of accessibility. But its been a wonderful ride with these actors, who have stood by us and given their all throughout. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Thespian Films (@thespianfilms_ind) Last year, it was reported that a crucial sequence of Haiwaan was shot in CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) and Churchgate in South Mumbai. Both areas are perennially crowded Yes. And yet, we had rain machines, 500 extras and both our actors shooting there. It was quite a sight! You are in the business of cinema. Hence, what are your expectations in terms of box office? As I said earlier, we are here to make good cinema and give our all to the films that we are making. Everyone has excellent expectations from their film. You dont expect a single producer who would say, I dont expect my film to do well! All I can is that from my side, I am giving my 500% to the film. After that, what happens is not in my control. Thats in the hands of who is above all of us. Making films is more difficult due to budget issues. Moreover, many producers have complained about entourages that add to the costs. How do you tackle these challenges? To each their own. Every film is different and today, even actors understand that. If a film can afford it, then yes, why not? But when it cant, Im sure actors are understanding about it as well. At the end of the day, everyone needs to operate within the framework of what the film can afford. Kalpana Iyer demands decency and respect as she seeks work in Bollywood
Kalpana Iyer has opened up about being ghosted and called for decency and respect from the industry. The veteran actor said she is not seeking sympathy or special treatment, but wants fair opportunities and age-appropriate roles
The Hindi film industry is known for its interconnected film families, with several prominent surnames sharing both professional and personal ties. From the Kapoors and Bachchans to the Salim Khan, Allu, Konidela, Akkineni and Daggubati families, relationships between members of different film clans have often brought them closer. A similar connection between Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan came to light during a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar appeared together on the popular quiz show to promote their upcoming crime thriller Haiwaan, directed by Priyadarshan. During the episode, host Amitabh Bachchan revealed a family connection between himself and Saif, leaving both actors surprised. Amitabh Bachchan explains his connection with Saif Ali Khan While speaking to Saif, Amitabh Bachchan said, Many people dont know this, but he is related to me. Saif appeared surprised and responded, Me? Akshay Kumar was also taken aback by the revelation. Explaining the connection, Amitabh said, Raj Kapoors daughter Ritu Kapoors son, Nikhil Nanda, is married to my daughter, Shweta Bachchan. The connection stems from Saifs marriage to Kareena Kapoor Khan. Kareena is the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita, and Randhir is Raj Kapoors son. This makes Kareena and Nikhil Nanda first cousins, linking Saifs family with the Kapoor family through marriage and, consequently, creating a connection with the Bachchan family. Amitabh then added a humorous question, saying, So, now I want to know, how should I address Kareena? What will Kareena call me? Saif responded with a witty remark: Thank god thats not a question (on KBC screen), leaving Amitabh and Akshay laughing. Amitabh and Kareena have previously worked together in films including Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Dev (2004) and Satyagraha (2013). He has also shared the screen with Saif in Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007) and Aarakshan (2011). About Haiwaan Directed by Priyadarshan, Haiwaan also stars Boman Irani, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Saiyami Kher, Rajpal Yadav, Sharib Hashmi, Rajesh Sharma, Pahal Chaudhary and Manoj Joshi in key roles. The film is a remake of Priyadarshans 2016 Malayalam film Oppam, which starred Mohanlal in the lead role. The upcoming crime thriller features music by Pritam, cinematography by Divakar Mani, production design by Sabu Cyril and editing by Aiyappan Nair MS. Bhuvan Bam had to overcome an unexpected challenge while preparing to play revolutionary Rash Behari Bose in Prime Videos upcoming period drama The Revolutionaries. While the actor was required to embody the historical figure and participate in action sequences, learning to ride a horse proved to be a particularly difficult experience. Bhuvan recalled that his first horse-riding lesson at Juhu Beach took an unexpected turn when the horse he was riding suddenly ran away. The incident left him shaken and subsequently made him hesitant about getting back on a horse for the series. He shared, So they told me to learn horse riding. It was a horse, thats used for wedding functions, and they took me to Juhu Beach for training. So basically, what happened was that the caretaker was on a phone call and the horse simply ran off with me. That was my first day of horse-riding lessons. If I had fallen from there, I would probably still be bedridden today. I was literally hanging from the horse, and I was shivering for the next three days. The incident reached Sir (Nikkhil Advani) and he took stock of the situation, and I opened up to him and told him that Sir, the horse took me away without my permission! Its leg was stuck in some plastic, and it just kept running with me! He further added, The horse-riding scene hadnt come up yet and every day, I would wake up thinking, Today Ill tell Sir. Today Ill finally gather the courage and tell him that I cant do horse riding. Then there was a day when one scene went really well and sir was extremely happy. I thought, Today he is in a good mood, so I went to him and said, Sir, can I tell you something? Please dont make me ride the horse. Every day Im haunted by the thought that the horse might take me away again. However, the production eventually found a solution for an action sequence involving Rash Behari Bose and General Dyer, played by Jason Shah. Rather than having Bhuvan perform the horseback portion himself, the actor suggested switching the vehicles used by the two characters. Lets switch, said Bhuvan. By then, I had spoken to Dyer enough to know that he was a kick-ass horse rider. They had given him the bike and given me the horse. So I said, Sir, lets switch. He was such a good horse rider that, at times, the horse was actually overtaking the bike. And then we did it, and it was so swift! The Revolutionaries is inspired by true events and is set against the backdrop of India's freedom struggle. Created and directed for series by Nikkhil Advani, the period drama is produced by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani under Emmay Entertainment. The series is based on Sanjeev Sanyal's book Revolutionaries: The Other Story Of How India Won Its Freedom. The ensemble cast includes Bhuvan Bam, Rohit Saraf, Pratibha Ranta and Gurfateh Pirzada in lead roles, alongside Jason Shah, Paoli Dam and Tota Roy Chowdhury in key parts. The Revolutionaries will premiere on Prime Video on September 11. Also Read: The Revolutionaries: T-Series releases Jai Durga devotional anthem ahead of Prime Video series premiere
