Uttarkashi mosque dispute: Rising communal tensions, allegations of illegality
DEHRADUN: Tensions are rising in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, following controversial statements made by Anuj Walia, convener of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. Walia has claimed that the documents of a house referred to as a mosque are illegal, which is contradictory, and asserted that he possesses solid evidence to support his assertion. In a move that has further heightened tensions, Walia announced plans to launch a massive movement under the banner of Devbhoomi Raksha. He intends to hold a maha panchayat at Ramlila Maidan in Uttarkashi on December 1. Walia accused the mosque of becoming a terrorist hub, alleging it shelters several terrorists and serves as a centre for spreading Islamic jihad and religious conversion. The mosque at the centre of the controversy has been deemed illegal by certain Hindu organisations, drawing sharp responses from local Hindu leaders. Swami Darshan Bharti, founder of the Devbhoomi Raksha Sansthan, an umbrella group of Hindu organisations, firmly stated: We have the sole demand, only and only to demolish the illegally built mosque. However, local authorities and officials have maintained that the mosque is legally registered, urging calm and restraint in the face of escalating rhetoric. The situation is part of a broader pattern of communal tensions in the state, with incidents of hate speech and violence recently reported in districts like Purola and Haridwar. Hindu maha panchayat set for November 4 amid ongoing mosque legitimacy dispute in Uttarkashi The controversy over the mosque has its origins in a two-month-long dispute that turned violent on October 24. A protest march organised by the Sanyukt Sanatan Dharma Rakshak Sangh clashed with police, resulting in injuries and property damage. Protesters, demanding the demolition of the mosque, alleged that it had been built illegally on government land. However, officials have maintained that the mosque was constructed on private property and is legally registered. The conflict intensified after an RTI application was filed seeking clarification on the mosque's legitimacy. In response, the administration indicated that the mosque lacked certain documents, prompting the submission of a memorandum to the Uttarkashi District Magistrate, demanding the mosques demolition. This led to further violence when protesters, armed with stones, clashed with police, who responded with a lathi charge. Authorities quickly imposed restrictions to maintain law and order. This incident is part of a disturbing pattern of protests and counter-protests surrounding the disputed mosque. Uttarkashi SP Amit Srivastava clarified that the mosque is lawfully constructed on registered land owned by Muslims in the town. A committee headed by SDM Bhatwari also upheld the mosque's legitimacy, finding no evidence of encroachment on government land. Since the onset of monsoon on June 23 this year, the Himalayan state has witnessed 1,521 landslides in just 17 days, with the number rising to 1,813 by the end of the monsoon season, official sources said. The situation is extremely fragile, said a senior official. We are working round-the-clock to mitigate the risks and ensure public safety. Twenty-eight people are reported missing, while 544 livestock have perished in the disaster. Speaking to TNIE, Vinod Kumar Suman, State Secretary for Disaster Management, said, While rain-induced landslides are unavoidable, we're investigating possible causes behind landslides in areas where rainfall wasn't a factor, adding, he said, We have begun analyzing the potential causes behind these incidents. The State Disaster Management Secretary Suman revealed that a special meeting was held at the State Secretariat on Saturday to analyze landslide damage and prepare 15 years' worth of data. This study will enable the state to tackle future challenges effectively. We have decided to compile data on landslide damage over the past 15 years, the Secretary said. By studying this data, we will be better equipped to handle future disasters. The state aims to develop a strategy based on lessons learned from past disasters, particularly those that occurred in the last 10-15 years. Accuracy in weather forecasting has been exceptional this time, with IMD's support playing a crucial role, said Secretary Suman. Encouraged by this success, the state has proposed increasing Automated Weather Stations (AWS) through district-level initiatives. The state's disaster management department effectively took precautionary measures in Tehri, Udham Singh Nagar, and Kedarnath, leveraging AWS capabilities. Data from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) reveals a disturbing trend in Uttarakhand's landslide activity. Hindu maha panchayat set for November 4 amid ongoing mosque legitimacy dispute in Uttarkashi
DEHRADUN: Tension continued to prevail in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, on Saturday, marking the third consecutive day of unrest stemming from a controversy over the legitimacy of a mosque. On Friday, police resorted to a lathi-charge to disperse protestors, resulting in injuries to several individuals. Following this Hindu traders across the region closed their shops today in protest against the police's actions. Hindu groups vocally condemned what they termed police atrocities. Following a strategic meeting, leaders announced plans for a Hindu Mahapanchayat scheduled for November 4 in Uttarkashi, aiming to address the escalating situation. The unrest was primarily sparked by a mosque that has been at the center of a two-month-long dispute. On October 24, the Sanyukt Sanatan Dharma Rakshak Sangh organized a protest march, which turned violent when police intervened with a lathi charge, leading to retaliatory stone-pelting by the demonstrators. The situation deteriorated rapidly, prompting authorities to impose restrictions aimed at maintaining law and order. This incident is part of a troubling pattern of protests and counter-protests surrounding the disputed mosque. Similar tensions have erupted in other areas of the state, prompting law enforcement to employ force to disperse crowds. In light of the unrest, Section 144 was invoked to prohibit assemblies and maintain public order . During the protests, shops owned by Muslims were vandalized, reflecting a disturbing trend of communal violence. On Thursday night, Swami Darshan Bharti, convener of the Devbhumi Raksha Abhiyan, issued a provocative warning: if prayers were conducted at the Uttarkashi mosque on Friday, markets would shut down, and intense protests would ensue. This declaration heightened police vigilance and led to precautionary measures. In response to the escalating tensions, District Magistrate Dr. Meharban Singh Bishht imposed Section 144 in Uttarkashi district. In solidarity with the Vyapar Mandal, the vegetable market in Uttarkashi remained closed. To manage the situation effectively, police forces from Tehri Garhwal, Haridwar, and Dehradun were deployed to the area. Members of Hindu organizations gathered at the Vishwanath Temple complex in the afternoon to voice their concerns. Inspector Kotwali Amrajit Singh arrived at the scene, issuing stern warnings against any violations of the prohibition order. However, his admonitions only intensified the anger among the Hindu organization members, who erupted in protests against the police and administration, expressing their discontent through slogans.

Will allow seers to build ashrams in Ujjain, says Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav
An action plan has been prepared to develop Ujjain as a religious city, like Haridwar
Decks cleared for grand Simhastha-28 in Ujjain
BHOPAL: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday announced a comprehensive plan which will allow the 13 akharas and other sadhus and sanyasis to build permanent ashrams in Madhya Pradeshs holy city, Ujjain, on the lines of Haridwar. The development assumes significance as it is part of the preparations for next Simhastha (Kumbh Mela) to be held on the banks of the sacred river Kshipra in Ujjain during 2028. The Simhastha is held once every 12 years in Ujjain. On the lines of Haridwar, where all the 13 akharas and other seers have their own permanent ashrams from where their sadhus and sanyasis as well as devotees leave to take bath during the Kumbh Mela, similar planning is being done for Ujjain too, which is attracting enormous inflow of pilgrims from across the world, particularly after the 2022 unveiling of Mahakal Lok Temple corridor, CM Yadav told journalists. A significant portion of the religious city Ujjain will be reserved for building ashrams by the 13 akharas, their heads, mahants, mahamandaleshwars and prominent sadhus and sanyasis. Land will be allotted by the government to each of the akharas and seers wishing to build permanent ashrams there. While 25% of every one hectare plot will be allowed to be used for construction of ashram buildings, the remaining open space will be used for parking and other facilities, keeping in mind the heavy influx of devotees at the event. All other infrastructural support, including roads, sewage, drinking water and power will be made available to those ashrams by the government and the local development authority, the CM said. The plan will be given shape through the Ujjain Development Authority. In view of Simhastha, permanent infrastructure will also be built for basic facilities like roads, electricity, drinking water, drainage, etc., so that problems caused by temporary construction do not arise, he added. Yadav said that an action plan has been prepared with all the public representatives to develop Ujjain as a religious city like Haridwar. In order to ensure smooth traffic, permanent infrastructure development works like four-lane, six-lane and bridges will be undertaken. Along with basic facilities, ashrams for the saints will be constructed parallelly. Public activities like Anna Kshetra, Dharamshala, Ashram, Medical Center, Ayurveda Center etc. will be organised on priority with the help of the Sanatan Dharma followers. The CM also informed that in-principle approval has also been given to operate Indore-Ujjain metro train. Along with this, the Circle Vande Metro train will also be operated connecting Ujjain, Dewas, Fatehabad, and Indore. Its speed will be more than the metro train. All the routes of Ujjain are also being strengthened.

Two inmates, including murder convict, escape during Ram Leela performance at Haridwar jail
DEHRADUN: A daring breach of security at Haridwar's high-security Roshnabad jail resulted in the escape of two prisoners, including a murder convict, on Friday evening. The shocking incident occurred during a Ram Leela performance within the jail premises, where the escaped inmates were playing roles searching for Sita, as per the script of the Hindu epic religious play. According to the police sources, the inmates, who were part of the Ram Leela performance, seized the opportunity to slip away, exposing serious security lapses. The inmates, identified as Pankaj, a Roorkee resident and Rajkumar of Uttar Pradesh's Gonda, were participating in the annual Ram Leela performance when they made their break. According to jail authorities, the inmates, identified as Pankaj, a Roorkee resident and Rajkumar of Uttar Pradesh's Gonda, were playing the roles of 'Vaanar' (monkeys) in the play and allegedly slipped away during the search for Sita, as per the script. Jail Superintendent Manoj Kumar Arya told TNIE , 'The jail administration learnt about the escape of the two inmates during a routine headcount in the evening.' Citing security lapses, authorities will reevaluate organizing such events. Two inmates escaped from Haridwar's Roshnabad Jail by using a ladder to scale the compound wall, according to Arya. The daring breakout was captured on CCTV, which shows the prisoners climbing the ladder to freedom. Primary investigations have revealed that the ladder used in the escape was left inside the jail premises due to ongoing construction of a high-security barrack. Speaking to TNIE , SHO Sidcul Manohar Bhandari stated, We are investigating two key aspects: the lax security that allowed construction materials, including a ladder and pipes, to be left unattended, and the delayed reporting of the incident to the police. Uttarakhand's Inspector General Jails Vimala Gunjyal and Deputy Inspector General Dadhiram Maurya visited Haridwar's Roshnabad jail on Saturday, inspecting the site of the escape and Ram Leela event venue. We have ordered an investigation into the incident, DIG Maurya told TNIE , adding, he told, If any lapses or involvement are found, stringent legal action will be taken against those responsible. Outrage among Haridwar saints over Tirupati temple 'prasad' controversy
DEHRADUN: A shocking laboratory report revealing the use of fish oil and animal fat in the 'prasad' offered at Tirupati Balaji Temple has sparked widespread outrage among saints in Haridwar. This is a conspiracy against Sanatan Dharma, not just limited to Andhra Pradesh, but across the entire nation, said Mahant Gyan Das, President of Akhara Parishad. The saint community has demanded stringent action against those responsible. The culprits should be hanged, said Acharya Narendra Giri, a prominent spiritual leader. If stringent action is not taken against those hurting Sanatan faith through Tirupati Balaji Temple's 'prasad', such elements will continue to gain emboldenment, warned Mahant Ravindrapuri Maharaj, President of Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad Mahanirvani and head of Daksh Prajapati Temple. The controversy has left millions of Sanatan devotees across India deeply hurt, Ravindrapuri added. Lord Vishnu Himself resides in Tirupati Balaji temple. Those involved in this conspiracy must be investigated, Mahant Ravindrapuri Maharaj stressed. In a letter to the Home Minister, Maharaj demanded a thorough CBI probe and public hanging of those found guilty. This is a conspiracy against Sanatan Dharma, and we will not tolerate it, Maharaj added. Tirupati laddu row: CM Naidu forms SIT, Jagan writes to PM Modi, PIL filed in SC Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Kailashanand, the chief of Niranjani Peeth, has made startling allegations regarding the recent controversy surrounding the famous Balaji temple. Approximately 900 million people in India follow the Balaji tradition. If such a conspiracy is hatched in this temple, it not only involves domestic conspirators but also foreign elements and individuals involved in terrorist activities, Swami Kailashanand told The New Indian Express. In a bid to ensure purity and quality, he demanded that 'prasad' samples be collected from major temples across India, including iconic sites. Besides Ayodhya, Kashi, and Mathura, samples of prasad should also be taken from massive pilgrimage centers like Shirdi Sai Baba Temple, the leader said. Mahant Ravindrapuri has called for the immediate dissolution of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) Board, citing its alleged ignorance and ineffectiveness in managing the revered Tirupati Balaji Temple in Andhra Pradesh. The TTD Board has been completely oblivious to the concerns of the temple, Ravindrapuri told The New Indian Express. I demand that the board be dissolved with immediate effect and a new Sanatan Raksha Board be constituted in its place. Eminent saints, including Mahamandaleshwar Rupendra Prakash and Mahamandaleshwar Harichetanand, joined the chorus, stressing the need for Hindu leaders to take charge of protecting Sanatan Dharma. It's time for saints to lead the charge in safeguarding Sanatan values. Saints across the nation must unite and deliberate on this critical issue, said Rupendra Prakash. BJP struggles to boost membership in Uttarakhand
DEHRADUN: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), currently in its second consecutive term in Uttarakhand, is struggling to boost its membership numbers. Despite launching a membership drive aimed at increasing its member base, only three BJP MLAs have achieved significant success, while the majority have underperformed. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has made considerable efforts, yet none of the 47 ruling BJP MLAs have met the target of enrolling 10,000 members. Only three MLAs have surpassed the 5,000-member milestone, indicating a lack of seriousness among lawmakers regarding party activities. The BJP initiated its membership drive in Uttarakhand on September 3, with the first phase set to conclude on September 25. According to data available until September 16, the top performers among BJP MLAs are Sahaspur MLA Sahdev Pundir with 6,619 members, Haridwar MLA Madan Kaushik with 6,439 members, and Sitarangjan MLA and Cabinet Minister Saurabh Bahuguna with 5,645 members. Notable performers also include Vidhansabha Speaker and Kotdwar MLA Ritu Khanduri Bhushan, who has enrolled 2,982 members, and Srinagar Garhwal MLA and Cabinet Minister Dr. Dhan Singh with 1,631 members. Additionally, BHEL Ranipur MLA Adesh Chauhan and Kapkot MLA Suresh have each crossed the 1,000-member mark. However, many party members have fallen short of this milestone. The membership drive has seen a lacklustre response from several MLAs in Uttarakhand. Kuldeep Kumar, the state convener of the membership drive, stated, 13 BJP MLAs have enrolled less than 100 members as of September 16. Seven of these lawmakers have managed to sign up only between 9 and 50 members. This underwhelming performance comes despite the party's ambitious goal to convert 75% of its Lok Sabha election voters into members. Currently, the BJP has reached the 700,000-member mark and aims to expand its organisation to reach out to every citizen through this drive. The national membership campaign, which commenced on September 3, targets 10 crore new members. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami renewed his membership and encouraged others to join. The drive is structured in phases, with the first phase ending on September 25, followed by the second phase from October 1 to 15, and an active membership drive from October 16 to 31. In response to the BJP's membership drive, Uttarakhand Congress President Karan Mahara has voiced criticism, saying the lukewarm response indicates the people's disillusionment with the party. It's evident that Uttarakhand residents are tolerating the BJP out of compulsion, Mahara told TNIE.

SC ruling provides relief to Uttarakhand jails; Hundreds of undertrials to be released
DEHRADUN: The Supreme Court has ordered the release on bail of undertrial prisoners in Uttarakhand who have served one-third of their maximum sentence. This reprieve excludes those accused of serious crimes punishable by life imprisonment or death. The ruling aims to provide relief to prisoners languishing in jails for extended periods without trial. According to the order, prisoners who have served 14 years or more may be granted bail, while those who have served over 10 years may also be eligible, provided there are no strong objections. Approximately 300 undertrial prisoners in Uttarakhand jails will be released following the Supreme Court directive. We have issued instructions to all jail superintendents based on the Supreme Court's order, Uttarakhand's Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Dadhi Ram Maurya, told this daily. He added, A list of eligible prisoners is being compiled, and further action will be taken accordingly. The state will be implementing a new provision under Section 479 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Nyay Sanhita (BNNS) law, as directed by the Supreme Court. This provision will also apply to existing prisoners, said DIG Maurya. Jail sources report that Dehradun's district jail, with a capacity of 580 inmates, currently houses over 900 undertrials and 369 convicts. Similarly, Haldwani's district jail, designed for 635 inmates, is home to 1,300 undertrials and 140 convicts. The situation is equally dire in Haridwar, where the district jails capacity of 888 is overwhelmed by 684 undertrials and 566 convicts. This alarming trend raises concerns about the living conditions and rehabilitation prospects for inmates. The Supreme Courts ruling is part of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which introduces relaxed bail provisions for first-time offenders. Under this law, first-time offenders can seek bail if they have served one-third of the maximum sentence for their alleged offence. The Supreme Court has directed jail superintendents to process applications for all eligible undertrial prisoners within three months. Rajeev Sharma, President of the Dehradun Bar Association, commented, The court's decision reiterates the principle that bail is the rule, and jail is the exception, emphasising the need to protect constitutional liberties and the right to presumption of innocence.

Mild earthquake tremors felt in Dehradun
DEHRADUN: An earthquake with a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale jolted Dehradun on Sunday night. The quake's epicentre was located 5 kilometers beneath the ground in the city. District Disaster Management Officer Rishabh Kumar said that mild earthquake tremors were felt in some areas of the capital city, but the quake's low intensity, caused no damage. However, he said officials will remain vigilant for the next 3-4 days. Geologists caution that a mild tremor does not necessarily predetermine a major earthquake, but nor can the possibility be ruled out. Instead, the slight jolt serves as a mild reminder and a call to be better prepared. A mild earthquake is a practical reminder for preparedness and to be equipped for the future, Dr. Pal a retired seismology and earthquake engineering scientist from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology told TNIE . Uttarakhand falls under the high-seismic zone five, which includes most parts of Rudraprayag district, along with Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Chamoli, and Uttarkashi districts. Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Haridwar, Pauri, and Almora fall under Zone 4 of the earthquake-prone area. Some areas of Dehradun and Tehri districts are under zone 4, while others fall under the high-seismic zone 5. Experts attribute the frequent earthquakes in the Himalayan region to the collision of the Indo-European plate, leading to continuous release of energy from beneath the earth's surface. According to records, most earthquakes have been recorded in high-seismic zones, indicating a persistent stress build-up in the region's geology.

(Photo: PTI) Ramdev said that the political leaders should go beyond vote bank politics and should not compromise with the nation's sovereignty and unity. (Photo: PTI) Haridwar: Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev on Tuesday condemned the targeted attacks on houses, temples and business establishments of Hindus in Bangladesh, and urged the Centre to do all it can diplomatically and politically to protect the Hindu minority in the neighbouring country. He also expressed his concerns over the safety of Hindus living in Bangladesh amid the country's political unrest, which includes student protests and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The way fundamentalist forces are carrying out well-planned attacks on Hindu homes, temples, and businesses in Bangladesh is both shameful and dangerous, Ramdev told ANI. I fear that India will need to remain vigilant so that the honour and dignity of the mothers, sisters and daughters of our Hindu brothers are not at stake. The entire country will have to stand with its minority Hindu brothers with full strength, he said. Ramdev added that India should make diplomatic and political efforts to prevent major incidents and, if necessary, intervene to protect Hindus in Bangladesh. We helped create Bangladesh; if we can create Bangladesh, we must show our strength in protecting Hindus living there, Ramdev said. He also alleged that some individuals in India are trying to incite similar unrest within the country under the guise of caste, religion, and reservation issues. It is unfortunate that some politicians, religious extremists, and certain YouTubers are attempting to create similar unrest in India in the name of caste, religion, reservation, and the Constitution, threatening the nation's unity and integrity. We must counter these efforts with strength, he said. Meanwhile, several former diplomats and experts have expressed concern about the situation in Bangladesh, urging the Indian government to stay vigilant. They have warned of a huge influx of migrants from Bangladesh and raised suspicions about possible foreign involvement in the unrest. The student protests in Bangladesh, initially demanding an end to the civil service quota, escalated into major anti-government demonstrations, leading to PM Sheikh Hasina's resignation and departure from the country. Noida and Ghaziabad Traffic Jam: Kanwar Yatra Disruptions Begin Today, Check Advisory Here
NOIDA: As the Kanwar Yatra begins, key roads in Noida and Ghaziabad are expected to experience significant traffic disruptions starting Saturday, due to new restrictions and diversions. These measures will remain in place until the evening of August 5. In Noida, two lanes at the Kalindi Kunj border leading out of Delhi have been closed to facilitate the movement of pilgrims. This stretch, running between the Okhla barrage and the bird sanctuary, will see these closures. In Ghaziabad, private cars and light goods vehicles heading towards Meerut will be rerouted from the Delhi-Meerut Expressway (DME) via NH-9 and Hapur. Notably, heavy vehicles have been banned from the DME since July 22. These restrictions at the Okhla border are expected to create congestion on the alternative routes leading into Delhi, potentially causing lengthy delays during peak hours. Enhanced Security for Kanwar Yatris In addition to the local police and Rapid Action Force (RAF), the district administration has also deployed Uttar Pradeshs Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) commandos along the Kanwar route. This move aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims traveling from Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, and various districts of Uttar Pradesh. Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Singh reported that ATS commandos have been stationed at Shiv Chowk in Muzaffarnagar, a key checkpoint for yatris returning from Haridwar. Sensitive areas around Shiv Chowk have been secured by ATS personnel to prevent any incidents. In total, the security arrangement includes a team of RAF, six Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams, and ATS commandos, ensuring robust protection for the Kanwar Yatra. The Kanwar Yatra officially commenced on July 22, with these measures in place to manage both traffic and security efficiently. Uttarakhand: Clothes hung on mosques ahead of Kanwar yatra, later removed
CHENNAI: Amid growing criticism of several BJP-ruled state governments' diktat to display names of the owners on eateries along the route of the Kanwar yatra, Uttarakhand government has come up with a novel idea to prevent trouble. On Friday, July 26, two mosques and a shrine, located in the Haridwar city of Uttarakhand were covered with large white sheets, ahead of the Kanwar yatra passing through the route. The sheets were hung on bamboo scaffoldings in front of two mosques and a Mazar, all in the Jwalapur area . Uttarakhand Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj told reporters that it was done to prevent trouble and maintain peace. But what exactly is this trouble and how does the sight of a mosque disrupt the Kanwar yatra, nobody explained. Instead, the minister said, It is not such a big thing. We also cover buildings when they are under construction. Meanwhile, the caretakers of the mosque and shrine said they were unaware of any order passed in this regard from the administration. They said this was the first time such a thing had happened. Kanwariyas stop under the shade of trees outside mosques and Mazars to rest, said Shakeel Ahmad, one of the caretakers of the Mazar. He reiterated that this is the first time the administration has come up with such a strange move. Congress leader and former minister Naeem Qureshi said he has never seen such a thing in his life. We Muslims always welcome Shiv bhakts (devotees) for the kanwar fair and arrange refreshments for them at various places. This has been an example of harmony between Hindus and Muslims in Haridwar, and there has never been a tradition of curtains, he said. Qureshi said before the Kanwar mela started, the administration had held a meeting and members from both the Hindu and Muslim communities were made SPOs. Congress leader and former district panchayat president Rao Afaque Ali pointed out that some Kanwariyas used to visit the mosques on the route to pay respect. It has never happened earlier. Some Kanwariyas also go to mosques to pay obeisance. India is a country where everyone takes care of every religion and caste. Today mosques are being covered, what will happen if temples are covered in this manner tomorrow? he asked. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Congress vice president Suryakant Dhasmana said that the move to cover mosques on the route of Kanwar Yatra was a contempt of the Supreme Court. The order to put curtains on mosques and mazars on the kanwar yatra route in Haridwar district, whoever has issued it, goes against the Supreme Court which has put a stay on an order which asked hotel and restaurant owners and fruit vendors on the route to display their names, caste and religious identity, Dhasmana said. Attacking the ruling BJP in the state, he said it has not learnt from its electoral defeats in Badrinath, Manglaur, Chitrakoot and Prayagraj. The message it has missed is that the entire country is one. BJP's divisive and discriminatory politics has been rejected. But the party is not learning, Dhasmana said. However, following criticism, the clothes covering the mosques were removed by the evening on Friday. We received orders from the railway police post to remove the curtains. That is why we have come to remove these, said Danish Ali, appointed as a special police officer (SPO) by the administration for the yatra's management. This is not the first time mosques had been covered by the government during Hindu festivities. In March this year, ahead of the Holi festival, several mosques in UP were covered with tarpaulin sheets, which the authorities dubbed as a move o prevent them from being smeared with colours, which could affect communal harmony. According to reports, this has remained a custom in UP since Yogi Adityanath came to power. In April this year, a mosque in Hyderabad was also covered in white clothes ahead of the Ram Navami procession passing through the route. Several mosques and Muslim localities, across different states in the country were attacked by Hindutva groups during the Ram Navami procession last year. (With inputs from PTI)
