Several feared dead after heavy rain triggers landslides in West Bengal's Darjeeling

Several people are feared dead after heavy rainfall triggered landslides in parts of Mirik in Darjeeling district on Sunday morning. An official said that rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with the local administration, police, and disaster response teams rushing to the spot. Several casualties are feared due to a major landslide in Darjeeling district, triggered by heavy rainfall since last night. We don't have the exact figures right now, as the rescue and relief work has just started, the officer told PTI. Unconfirmed reports claim that 11 people have died in the landslide, according to PTI. The region has been placed under a red alert due to persistent heavy rainfall. The Dudia Iron Bridge, connecting Mirik and Kurseong, has also collapsed, cutting off access to key towns. The bridge collapse has further complicated rescue and relief efforts. #WATCH | West Bengal Movement of vehicles has been restricted on the Siliguri-Darjeeling SH-12 road after a portion of Dudhia iron bridge collapsed due to heavy rain in North Bengal. pic.twitter.com/0Rv61YekTa ANI (@ANI) October 5, 2025 Visuals on social media show large swathes of road covered in debris, highlighting the scale of disruption.
