SC stays Delhi HC order suspending life sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao rape case
The Supreme Court of India on Monday stayed the Delhi High Courts order that had suspended the life sentence of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar and granted him bail in the 2017 Unnao rape case involving a minor girl. Passing the order, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant said the operation of the Delhi High Courts December 23 order would remain stayed, and clarified that Sengar shall not be released pursuant to that ruling. In view of the peculiar facts, where the convict stands convicted for a separate offence, we stay the operation of the Delhi High Court order dated December 23, 2025. The respondent shall not be released pursuant to the said order, the CJI observed. The apex court also issued notice to Sengar on an appeal filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation challenging the High Courts decision to suspend his life sentence. Sengar, a former BJP MLA, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 for the rape of a minor in Uttar Pradeshs Unnao district. (This is a breaking news update)
