In 1905, a transporter bridge opened across Englands River Mersey, carrying up to 300 passengers and horse-drawn wagons in 2 minutes

The WidnesRuncorn Transporter Bridge was officially opened in 1905, introducing a groundbreaking means of crossing the River Mersey. This innovative bridge allowed both commuters and horse-drawn carriages to navigate beneath an elevated structure via a suspended platform. It played a crucial role in linking the industrial towns of Widnes and Runcorn until it was superseded by the Silver Jubilee Bridge in 1961.
