Virginia sinks 951 tons of bridge concrete to build habitat for fish

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion project involves dismantling an old bridge and using the concrete for artificial reefs. This initiative helps divert demolition waste from landfills while enhancing underwater habitats. Approximately 100,000 tons of concrete is expected to be repurposed for marine life by 2027. The Virginia Marine Resources Commission manages the artificial reefs that support local fisheries and marine ecosystems. This innovative approach connects infrastructure development with environmental sustainability.
