Scientists built a battery-free device that turns sunlight into fuel

Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have developed a battery-free artificial photosynthesis system that continuously converts sunlight, water and carbon dioxide into formic acid, a useful liquid fuel and energy-storage chemical. By redesigning the electrolyser to self-regulate under changing sunlight conditions, the team eliminated the need for batteries and complex electronic control systems, potentially making solar fuel production cheaper, simpler and easier to scale.
