Maharashtra puts new RTI Rules on hold after Hazare's agitation threat

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has asked the Chief Commissioner of RTI stay on the new Maharashtra Right to Information Rules, 2026, following widespread opposition. The proposed changes, including increased fees and mandatory identity proof, were criticized by activist Anna Hazare for diluting the RTI Act's spirit. Hazare had threatened a hunger strike if the rules weren't withdrawn, citing procedural hurdles and higher costs.
