Manchester wasn't always called Manchester: The story behind its name

Manchester's name carries a rich history that stretches back almost two thousand years. It began with the establishment of the Roman fort named Mamucium circa AD 79. The Saxons adapted this to Mameceastre, adding their term for a fortified town. As language evolved, so did the name, transforming into the current Manchester, which has come to represent industrial achievement, vibrant music scenes, and an intense football culture.
