Flying out of Japan will soon cost three times more with higher departure tax from this date

Japan is set to triple its departure tax from July 2026. This move, along with a potential five-fold increase in tourist visa fees, aims to manage overtourism and boost public finances. These changes will affect most travelers, including Japanese citizens. Additional travel charges are also planned for the coming years.
