Before anyone knew dinosaurs existed, a man found one of their bones and thought it belonged to a giant elephant

Centuries ago, a massive fossil unearthed in England baffled scholars. Believed to be a giant elephant or even a biblical giant, the bone's true identity remained a mystery. It wasn't until 1824 that geologist William Buckland identified it as Megalosaurus, the first scientifically named dinosaur.
