Scientists examined milkweed flowers with dead honey bees stuck to them; visits dropped 37%, while ant numbers climbed 51% in a UC Davis field experiment

A study from the University of California, Davis, explored how dead honey bees impact milkweed flowers. The findings showed a 37 percent reduction in flower visitations and a 51 percent rise in ant populations. It appears that honey bees might avoid these flowers, fearing potential dangers linked to deceased fellow bees. This research underscores the delicate balance of interactions within ecosystems and highlights the importance of small-scale events in nature.
