Guatemala's Maya Biosphere Reserve is showing that forests can be protected while supporting local livelihoods. Communities legally harvest a limited number of trees under strict rules, restore degraded land and grow new forests. Officials say these community-managed concessions have maintained near-zero deforestation while creating jobs, boosting incomes and increasing forest cover.
