Why Pete Hegseths remarks on Natos Afghanistan role have drawn UK rebuke and raised fresh questions over US-Europe relations

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth questioned the combat contributions of NATO allies in Afghanistan during a recent speech. His comments prompted a response from the British government defending the sacrifices of its troops, which included over 450 deaths. The controversy comes amid broader tensions regarding US support for Ukraine against Russian aggression. European leaders are concerned about maintaining their security commitments in light of these remarks.
