California lawmakers are advancing legislation that would make Native American Day an official paid holiday for state employees. The proposal, scheduled for the fourth Friday of September, recently passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee with unanimous support. Supporters say the measure acknowledges the states historical treatment of Indigenous communities and builds on past efforts by Gavin Newsom to address Californias violent history toward Native Americans.
