Assam prohibition of polygamy bill tabled in house; STs to be excluded

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced a bill in the assembly to prohibit polygamy, proposing a seven-year jail term for offenders and compensation for victims. The legislation, however, exempts Scheduled Tribes and Sixth Schedule areas due to existing customs. The bill aims to streamline society and protect individuals from the hardships of polygamous marriages.
