Ananya Panday gets Bombay High Court protection against AI deepfakes and unauthorised use of photos

The Bombay High Court has granted interim protection to Ananya Panday against the alleged unauthorised use of her name, photographs and other aspects of her identity across digital platforms. The order also directs the removal of objectionable content, including AI-generated images and video clips, that were allegedly circulated without the actress's consent. According to LiveLaw, Justice Madhav Jamdar passed the ad-interim order on Thursday, November 5, after Ananya approached the court seeking protection of her personality rights. The actress reportedly raised concerns over several products and online platforms allegedly using her photographs and AI-generated images and videos without obtaining her permission. Ananya Panday seeks legal protection against unauthorised use of her identity In her plea, Ananya objected to the alleged commercial exploitation of her identity and the circulation of unauthorised photographs and AI-generated content across the internet. She sought legal intervention to prevent the continued misuse of her personality and protect her rights. After examining the material submitted by the actress, the Bombay High Court observed that a prima facie case had been established in her favour. Justice Jamdar noted that the alleged use of such content appeared to violate Ananya's right to privacy, right to publicity, moral rights and right to live with dignity. The court consequently directed the removal of the objectionable material identified in the plea. The protection granted to the actress is currently ad-interim, with the matter set to proceed further before the court. Rupali Ganguly also gets relief from Bombay High Court Ananya is not the only actor to have sought judicial intervention over the alleged misuse of her identity. On the same day, the Bombay High Court also ordered the removal of objectionable online content concerning Anupamaa actress Rupali Ganguly. Rupali had alleged that several online portals were using her photographs and video clips without authorisation. She also raised concerns about deepfake and AI-generated material allegedly created and circulated for commercial purposes. The court directed the respondents to remove the disputed content, except for one entity whose matter was considered separately. Kriti Sanon recently secured protection against AI deepfakes A day before Ananya's hearing, the Delhi High Court granted interim protection to Kriti Sanon against the alleged misuse of her name, image, likeness and voice. Her plea highlighted concerns involving AI-generated deepfakes, sexually explicit morphed content, impersonating social media accounts, AI chatbots, synthetic voice models and unauthorised merchandise. The court ordered the removal of identified URLs and restrained the defendants from creating similar material. However, it clarified that legitimate news reports, reviews, criticism, commentary, satire, parody, caricatures and fan expression would not fall within the restrictions. Other Bollywood celebrities have also approached courts Several film personalities have sought legal protection against the unauthorised use of their identities, particularly with the growing use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Anil Kapoor previously secured protection from the Delhi High Court against the unauthorised commercial use of his name, image, voice and likeness, including through AI-generated content and face-morphing technology. Amitabh Bachchan had also obtained similar relief over the alleged misuse of his photographs and voice in fake promotions and online scams. Jackie Shroff has approached the Delhi High Court to protect his personality and publicity rights. Similar legal proceedings have also involved celebrities such as Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Allu Arjun, among others. With the latest order, Ananya joins the growing list of Bollywood celebrities seeking legal protection against the misuse of their identities in the digital space.
