Swanand Kirkire returns to theatre with Yo Brother, This Is 95 - A Musical at Prithvi Theatre Festival

Actor, lyricist and writer Swanand Kirkire is set to return to the stage with Yo Brother, This Is 95 - A Musical, a play written and directed by him, which is slated to premiere at the Prithvi Theatre Festival. Set in small-town India in 1995, during the early years of economic liberalisation, the musical revisits a period when the country's aspirations were evolving and consumer culture was beginning to influence everyday life. The play follows a group of young door-to-door vacuum cleaner salespeople trying to earn a living in a rapidly changing environment. As corporate ambitions, sales targets and incentives become part of their everyday lives, the characters find themselves navigating the gap between their dreams of a better future and the pressures of a system that increasingly measures success through numbers and performance. Blending music, satire, dark humour and folk influences, Yo Brother, This Is 95 - A Musical explores the transition between traditional values and modern aspirations. Through an ensemble-driven narrative, the production looks at the compromises people make to survive, the emotional cost of ambition and the growing pressure to prove their worth in a competitive environment. An ordinary household appliance, the vacuum cleaner, plays an important role in the story, serving both as a source of comedy and a metaphor for a society undergoing change. As the salespeople visit different households, they encounter people with varying desires, insecurities and expectations, offering a glimpse into the changing mindset of a nation adapting to a new economic reality. The narrative also examines the emergence of a performance-driven culture, where productivity, targets and measurable achievements increasingly shape perceptions of personal success. Speaking about the production, Swanand Kirkire said, Yo Brother, This Is 95 comes from a time in India when the idea of success was beginning to change. We were entering a new world of aspirations, opportunities and consumerism, where words like targets, incentives and growth were becoming part of everyday conversations. I find it fascinating how these changes, which may have seemed purely economic at the time, gradually began influencing our relationships, our ambitions and the way we measured ourselves and others. Through the lives of these young salespeople, we are trying to explore that shift with humour, music and a little bit of discomfort. The vacuum cleaner becomes more than just an object in the play; it represents a society trying to sell, buy and reinvent itself. At its heart, this is a story about ordinary people, their dreams and the compromises they make along the way. I am delighted to bring this musical to the stage and be part of the Prithvi Theatre Festival, a space that has always celebrated the spirit of live performance and meaningful storytelling. The musical features an ensemble cast comprising Swanand Kirkire, stand-up comedian Aakash Gupta, Garima Diwakar, Chinmay Chandraunshuh, Isha Pandey, Abhishek Kaushal, Ravi Mahashabde, Aisha Chauhan, Sanjjeeve Wilson, Chakori Dwivedi, Apsara Khan and Chinmaya Sharma. Through its combination of music, humour and social commentary, Yo Brother, This Is 95 - A Musical revisits an important phase in India's economic and cultural journey while drawing parallels with the pressures of contemporary life. The production looks back at a time when the meaning of success was changing and raises a question that continues to remain relevant: what happens when dreams turn into targets and a person's worth is measured by performance?
