Mona Singh opens up on exploring horror-comedy with Munjya; says, I really wanted to experience this
Mona Singh has explored a range of roles and storytelling formats throughout her career, moving between emotionally driven dramas and characters that allow her to experiment with different aspects of her acting. With Munjya, the actor stepped into the horror-comedy genre for the first time, taking on a project that offered her an opportunity to move beyond her familiar territory. The film went on to perform well at the box office, bringing together horror, humour and storytelling as part of Maddock Films growing slate of genre-based films. Speaking about what attracted her to horror-comedy and how her perception of the genre changed over time, Mona said she was keen to take up a role that would allow her to explore something different from the intense dramas she had frequently been part of. She said, As an actor, I really wanted to experience this because it was a completely different genre for me. More often than not, I end up doing intense dramas, so I wanted to try comedy, and comedy with a dose of horror was something really exciting for me. After Stree, the way I looked at the horror-comedy genre changed a lot because I was used to watching horror content that would give me sleepless nights. I clearly remember being scared out of my wits after watching Manjulika in the original Bhool Bhulaiyaa. So, when I got a call from Maddock Films and they said it was a great script and a horror film, I said, I dont watch horror films myself. Then they said, Maam, its a horror-comedy. I said, Great! Ive watched Stree. Im coming! Monas account highlights how the success of films such as Stree influenced her outlook on horror-comedy, making the genre more approachable for someone who was otherwise reluctant to watch conventional horror films. Her decision to be part of Munjya also reflected her interest in taking on projects that challenge her to explore unfamiliar creative spaces. The actor has had a varied year, delivering six different performances across projects and getting the opportunity to portray characters with distinct shades. Her choices reflect an effort to move between genres and formats instead of being associated with a particular kind of role. Mona is currently shooting for filmmaker Vikas Bahls upcoming film. As she continues to take on varied projects, the actor is exploring different storytelling styles and expanding the range of characters she brings to the screen.
