Happy Birthday Ali Fazal: From 3 Idiots to Mirzapur, why 2026 stands out in the actors career

Ali Fazal has come a long way since his brief but memorable appearance as Joy Lobo in 3 Idiots. Over the years, the actor has moved between comedy, romance, crime dramas and international productions, building a filmography that refuses to fit into a single mould. At 40, he finds himself at an interesting point in his career, with a defining franchise character, a growing body of diverse work and opportunities to expand his presence across Indian and international cinema. As Fazal celebrates his birthday on October 15, 2026, the year offers an opportunity to look at how far he has travelled as an actor. While Guddu Pandit from Mirzapur remains one of his most recognisable roles, his choices beyond the popular franchise reveal an actor keen to explore different characters and storytelling formats. Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh, offering his assessment of Fazals standing in the industry, said, Today, everyone is very selective about the kind of work they want to do and Ali has also been that way. If you look at his career graph, he has delivered some really good performances over the years. Mirzapur was also a powerful and fine performance. I think he is one of the rare actors who has been able to break through in the west also. I think thats a big sign for the times to come where I am sure he will be doing a lot of quality work in India as well as on the international stage. For many viewers, Guddu Pandit remains the role most closely associated with Fazal. His portrayal in Mirzapur established him as a compelling presence in the crime-drama space, with a character shaped by violence, ambition, revenge and personal loss. Over successive instalments, Guddu evolved into one of the franchises central attractions, giving Fazal the opportunity to balance physical intensity with moments of vulnerability and unpredictability. The release of Mirzapur: The Movie on September 4, 2026, took the franchise from streaming to the big screen, bringing its established characters to a theatrical audience. The films performance also underlined the strength of the connection audiences had built with the Mirzapur universe. Reflecting on the franchises transition to theatres and Fazals contribution to its success, Adarsh said, The transition has been so good. People have loved the characters. People have loved the series. It really got a readymade audience. When they came to the theatres, they knew what to expect; they knew there would be violence and solid content. So, I think somewhere down the line people were much assured that it was going to be the same theme with a different story. Its one of the rare movies that has done Rs. 200 crores plus in India due to quite a few reasons, including Ali. He was one of the principal characters of the film. However, Fazals career cannot be measured by Guddu Pandit alone. His early appearance in 3 Idiots was followed by the Fukrey franchise, where he explored a lighter, more comic screen persona. Films such as Khamoshiyan, Happy Bhag Jayegi and Prassthanam further added to his varied filmography, while international productions including Victoria & Abdul and Death on the Nile gave him opportunities to work in a different cinematic environment. This willingness to move between genres has been particularly evident in 2026. In Raakh, Fazal plays police officer J.P. in a crime thriller, stepping into a world of investigation and complex human behaviour. Batwara 1947, set against the backdrop of Partition, places him in a period drama, while Lust Stories 3 offers a more intimate, relationship-driven setting. The projects represent different storytelling spaces, allowing him to move beyond the screen image established by his most popular character. Adarsh sees this diversity as an important quality in Fazals career. I think thats a sign of a good actor that he is not repeating himself, he said. If you see, he has done some really good work in the past; all diverse work, be it films, series or international films. For an actor who has found a character as widely recognised as Guddu Pandit, the challenge is to ensure that the popularity of one role does not define the limits of his career. Fazals work across comedy, drama, crime thrillers and international productions suggests an interest in exploring different sides of his craft rather than relying on a familiar screen identity. His journey has also coincided with a significant shift in the entertainment industry, where theatrical releases and streaming projects increasingly contribute to an actors reach. Fazal has experienced both routes to audience recognition, from the theatrical success and popularity of 3 Idiots and Fukrey to the following built by Mirzapur. His career reflects how actors can establish themselves across formats, even as the expectations attached to their most successful roles continue to grow. Asked how the changing theatrical and streaming landscape has shaped Fazals career, Adarsh said, It definitely has. As I said, Ali is very choosy about his projects, like most actors. So, we will need to wait and watch what he picks up next. I am sure there would be many offers. There would be some scripts that he might be reading, he said. When asked what the actor needs to do to convert this recognition into a sustained appeal as a leading man, Adarsh said, There is no formula as such. He needs to keep working. That observation offers a fitting perspective on where Fazal stands at 40. He has an established screen identity, experience across Indian and international productions, and a body of work that spans contrasting genres. The next phase of his career will depend on the choices he makes and the characters he takes on, particularly as he looks to build on the recognition that Mirzapur has brought him. From Joy Lobo in 3 Idiots and the comic world of Fukrey to the formidable Guddu Pandit, Fazal has created a career defined by distinct phases rather than a single trajectory. With 2026 bringing together crime, period drama and relationship-driven storytelling alongside one of his most recognisable roles, his 40th birthday is an opportunity to reflect on an actor who continues to explore what he can do next.
