Two New York women, Judith Jones and Carolyn Kenyon, raised $12,500 in four months to help erase $1.5 million in medical debt for 1,284 strangers. Their fundraising campaign supported R.I.P. Medical Debt, a nonprofit that buys overdue medical bills at heavily discounted prices and cancels them. The initiative also highlighted how medical expenses can create long-term financial problems.
