Centre defends exemptions for strategic, atomic mineral mining

The Centre has rejected Tamil Nadu's request to withdraw an exemption for critical mineral mining projects from public consultation. The Union government stated the exemption is based on existing provisions for strategic projects. It assured that environmental and social concerns will still be addressed through the existing EIA process. The decision aims to support India's energy transition and defence needs.
