IPL 2026: Schedule Delays, Venue Confusion and Player Availability Raise Questions

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, branded as TATA IPL 2026 and the 19th edition of the event, is scheduled to be played from March 28 to May 31, with 10 teams competing in 84 matches. On March 11, BCCI announced the schedule for the first phase, to be played from March 28 to April 12 for the first 20 games. Top 10 facts related to the event: 1. Delay in schedule announcement: The reason is that the BCCI waited on two crucial issues: a. Confirmation of polling dates in multiple states like Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Assam. The clash with the election dates is not a new feature for the IPL. b. Final decision from two franchises (Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru) on their home venues. Rajasthan Royals were facing uncertainty over the use of Jaipurs Sawai Mansingh Stadium, due to unresolved administrative issues within the Rajasthan Cricket Association. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, the defending champions, although received conditional clearance from the Karnataka government to use the M Chinnaswamy Stadium (following a tragic stampede at last years victory celebration that left 11 fans dead), the final approval was awaited. Accordingly, the BCCI decided not to announce the full fixture list until polling timelines are clear. They unveiled the first phase of the IPL 2026 calendar. Interestingly, at the time of the announcement of this schedule for the Phase 1 matches, the election dates were not known, but when the election (and counting) dates were announced by the EC, it was found that none of the match dates clashed with the election dates. Few non-team base, IPL venues have very interesting connections: Raipur, Chhattisgarh: IPL returns to this venue (6 matches played between 2013 and 2016) as BCCI Treasurer Prabhtej Singh Bhatia is from the state. Interestingly, Raipur was home for Delhi Capitals earlier, and now its a home for RCB for two games. The distance between Raipur and the teams home city, Bangalore, is approximately 1013 km by air (flight time roughly 2 hours) and approximately 1300 km by road (over 24 hours drive). Vizag: One of the DC owners is from the city, and political influence is there, and the city gets two DC home games. So far, 17 IPL matches have been played at the venue and some were non-DC matches. The distance between Vizag and the team's home city Delhi is approximately 1360 km by air (flight time roughly 2 hours) and approximately 1815 km by road (over 30 hours drive). Guwahati: City of BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, one RR co-owner and gets three RR big home games. So far 6 IPL matches have been played at the venue. The distance between Guwahati and the team's home city, Jaipur, is approximately 1500 km by air (flight time roughly 3+ hours) and approximately 1550 km by road (over 38 hours drive). 4. RCB plays five of its home games at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after having got the nod to play at the venue. The IPL opening match, one playoff match and the final will also be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. An elated KSCA President and former Test pacer Venktesh Prasad said, Great to have the IPL back at this iconic venue. It is a great achievement for us at the KSCA to make this happen in the span of just two and a half months. This is a bigger achievement than my five-wicket haul against England (Lords, 1996). 5. Shift from normal schedule: Usually, the champion and runner-up venues are given for the next seasons IPL playoffs and final, which in this case would be New Chandigarh and Bengaluru. The New Chandigarh stadium (the home ground of PBKS), is scheduled to host an Afghanistan Test, immediately after the IPL, hence they missed this years important matches. 6. Opening match of the season: Starting from 2008 till now, a total of 15 different teams have played in the IPL. During all these years, the opening match of the IPL has never happened without at least one of these four teams: MI, CSK, KKR and RCB. However, for the first time, neither Mumbai Indians nor Chennai Super Kings are playing the first game of the IPL season, in 2 consecutive editions:. 2025 KKR vs RCB 2026- RCB vs SRH 7. The schedule of the first three matches of this season is very interesting: Match 1 on 28 March: RCB v SRH repeat of the 2016 final. The last time SRH and RCB played the IPL season opener was on 5th April 2017. Match 2 on 29 March: MI v KKR - 5-time champions v 3-time champions Match 3 on 30 March: RR v CSK repeat of 1st ever IPL final 8. The Big three: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni will be in action in the first three matches. 9. Title sponsor: Tata Group, under a 5-year contract (20242028) for Rs. 2500 crore (US$300 million). 10. Broadcaster: JioStar's Star Sports and JioHotstar as they hold the satellite and digital broadcasting rights for the period 20232027 cycle respectively. It appears that the teams are scrambling for replacements rather than getting their squads settled.
