The cloud bursts: Frantic call for a Himalayan research station

Every year, the Himalayas shed 300400 sq km of ice, amplifying monsoonal fury that already costs India nearly Rs 50,000 crore annually, in largely preventable damage. Moreover, our strategic leverage over transboundary rivers is quietly eroding. Deploying fourth-generation satellites and establishing the proposed Himalayan research station would cost a mere Rs 5,0007,000 crore a fraction of the annual losses.
