Stop Telling Women What to Wear: Kriti Sanon Reacts to Rakhi Ad Outfit Row

Actor Kriti Sanon has responded to the online backlash surrounding her latest advertisement, in which she was criticised by some social media users over her Indo-Western outfit. Breaking her silence on Tuesday, Kriti shared a note on her Instagram Stories, questioning why a womans respect for her culture continues to be judged by the clothes she chooses to wear. Culture & Traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!... Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear?? she wrote. The actor further pointed out that while ethnic fashion has changed and evolved over the years, women are still often subjected to scrutiny based on their appearance and clothing choices. Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, but still a woman's respect for her culture is measured with just her clothes, she added. Kritis statement came a day after an advertisement for a jewellery brand featuring the actor triggered a wave of criticism and hateful comments online. Several social media user including actor and MP Kangana Ranaut criticised Kriti Sanon for wearing a bralette-style blouse and a draped skirt while celebrating the festival. Sharing her reaction on Instagram Stories, Ranaut wrote: It's a wonderful time to be a woman, our closets are full of variety of clothes, today's woman is a global woman, from cocktail dresses to lehenga cholis, jeans to saris, bikinis to salwar kameez, from all the options that are available to us today why would you tie your brother a Rakhi in your bikini/ undergarments? Where are all your styling options? Ha ha, the advert looks intentionally creepy!
