Indias climate challenge: El Nio and erratic monsoons | Insight India
Over the past few months, India has seen heavy rain and flooding in several states. Despite that, the country is actually facing a deficient monsoon. Concentrated bouts of rain are part of the problem. But erratic monsoon patterns are becoming an increasingly common problem as India continues to face the impacts of climate change. This year is also an El Nio year a global climate phenomenon that brings heavy rain to some regions and drought to others. With El Nio expected to hit in November, is India prepared for the impacts this will have? In this episode of Insight India, Sonikka Loganathan speaks to The Hindus Science Editor, Jacob Koshy, about Indias increasingly complex monsoon risks from El Nio and uneven rainfall to the impact of climate change on agriculture, water, power and infrastructure.
