Around Madras city in hand-pulled rickshaws

Hand-pulled rickshaws arrived in Madras early in the 20th Century from Japan, and quickly became a convenience despite its very apparent issues. These were later banned in 1973. Their role was replaced by the marginally better cycle rickshaw, which received a helping hand from MGRs 1971 blockbuster Rickshawkaran
