World's first energy island: How Belgium built a switchboard in the North Sea, and why the inside costs more than the island

Princess Elisabeth Island's foundation works are now complete with the final caisson installed. The European Investment Bank provided a substantial green credit facility for electrical infrastructure. This artificial island will serve as a switchboard for offshore wind farms. Its design incorporates nature-inclusive elements for seabirds and marine organisms. The island is expected to be ready for its first wind farm connection in 2031.
