When a US aircraft carrier collided with a Soviet nuclear submarine in the Sea of Japan amid fears of World War 3

In 1984, the US aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk collided with the Soviet nuclear-powered submarine K-314 in the Sea of Japan during a tense Cold War military exercise. The submarine had been tracking the American carrier group when it surfaced in Kitty Hawks path. Both vessels were damaged, but neither side treated the incident as an attack, avoiding a confrontation that could have carried far greater consequences.
