In 1984, NASA and the FAA conducted groundbreaking tests on a fuel additive designed to minimize post-crash fires. A Boeing 720, remotely controlled, was intentionally crashed to collect essential data. Although the fuel additive, FM-9, failed to eliminate a significant fire, the findings greatly informed aircraft structural integrity and passenger safety, ultimately ending the FAA's push for mandatory anti-misting fuel additives.
