In 1965, a Polish-American woman chemist made an unexpected discovery and created a compound five times stronger than steel helping in saving lives through bulletproof vests, spacecrafts and helmets. Stephanie Kwoleks work at DuPont led to Kevlar and changed the use of synthetic fibres. Her research in polymer chemistry produced materials used in protective clothing, helmets, spacecraft, tyres, boats and other products.
