In 1903, Americas first Black national park superintendent took charge at Sequoia; his troops completed more improvements that summer than the previous three years combined

Captain Charles Young became the first Black acting superintendent of national parks in 1903. He oversaw significant road and trail improvements during his brief tenure. Buffalo Soldiers protected the parks from poaching and illegal grazing activities. These efforts made the giant sequoia groves more accessible to the public.
