In 1867, a Swedish chemist, engineer and industrialist invented a stable paste by mixing nitroglycerin with porous silica sand called kieselguhr. Alfred Nobel named the invention dynamite. It changed mining and construction by making blasting work easier to control. Nobel later developed other explosives and left most of his fortune to establish the Nobel Prizes.
