Early warning of the Gohna lake burst of 1894

The 1893 Gohna landslide in the UP Himalayas created a 900-foot natural dam and a massive lake that later breached catastrophically in 1894 and again in 1924. But an early-warning system using telegraphs, water-level monitoring and downstream observation posts enabled authorities to evacuate vulnerable settlements before the 1894 breach, with virtually no loss of life.
