A sick European to 7,044 deaths: How influenza became notifiable disease in Delhi over a century ago

Influenza claimed over seven thousand lives in Delhi city during the 1918 pandemic. Archival records show the disease spread rapidly after an initial mild outbreak. British India administration declared influenza an infectious disease in Delhi in 1920. This declaration brought the illness under municipal control provisions. Today, H1N1 is a reportable infection under Delhi's current guidelines.
