6,000 milk bottle road in China: How plastic waste found a strange second life in Shanghai

More than 6,000 used milk bottles in Shanghai were given an unusual second life when they were processed into recycled plastic and incorporated into polymer-modified asphalt. The 2021 project by Dow and dairy brand Shiny Meadow aimed to address the challenge of plastic bottles that are technically recyclable but often rejected by recyclers because of milk residue. The initiative was also presented as a potential way to reduce plastic waste, bitumen use and emissions while exploring new applications for recycled materials.
