Trump won't reimburse government for his TV ads that already aired

Like this article? Keep independent journalism alive. Support HuffPost . Donald Trump wont reimburse the U.S. government for the TV ads glorifying the president, the White House said Tuesday. In response to bipartisan backlash against the ads, Trump said Monday on Truth Social he would direct a super PAC to pay for the spots going forward. The White House said Tuesday there would be no payback for the ads already aired. The Presidents Truth was not referring to reimbursement, a spokesperson told HuffPost in an email. The president asked his budget director to fund the ads with taxpayer dollars, the New York Times reported last week , and the administration diverted $20 million from the Department of Homeland Security, despite multiple federal laws prohibiting federal spending on campaign activities. Its unclear how much has already been spent. Democrats have asked federal watchdog agencies to tally spending on the commercials and issue a formal analysis of whether theyre legal. The most recent government funding law passed by Congress , for instance, states:No part of any appropriation contained in this Act shall be used for publicity or propaganda purposes not authorized by the Congress.
