Is a cellular Apple Watch worth it? GPS vs Cellular explained

Macworld Do you really need an Apple Watch with cellular? Apples GPS + Cellular models let you make calls, send messages, stream music and use online services when your iPhone isnt nearby, but youll pay more for the Watch and usually need an additional cellular plan. For many Apple Watch owners, the standard GPS model is all they need because their iPhone is rarely far away. But cellular can make a big difference if you regularly run, work out, walk the dog or go out without your phone, or if you want an Apple Watch for a child or family member who doesnt have an iPhone. Apples current lineup consists of the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Apple Watch SE 3. The Series 12 and SE 3 are available in GPS and GPS + Cellular versions, while every Apple Watch Ultra 4 includes cellular connectivity. So is a cellular Apple Watch worth paying extra for? Heres what you get, what you dont, and who should choose each version. The biggest difference is simple: a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch can connect directly to a mobile network when your iPhone isnt with you and Wi-Fi isnt available. A GPS-only Apple Watch doesnt need your iPhone to use GPS. Both versions can record workouts and collect GPS data when youre running, cycling or walking without your phone, and the information syncs with your iPhone when the devices reconnect. A GPS Apple Watch can also use Apple Pay, monitor your health and play downloaded music, podcasts and audiobooks without an iPhone or internet connection. If it connects to a compatible Wi-Fi network, it can also use many internet-based features while your iPhone is out of range. The extra cellular connection is primarily useful when you want to make and receive calls, send messages, stream audio or use apps that need an internet connection when neither your iPhone nor a usable Wi-Fi network is available. What can a cellular Apple Watch do without an iPhone? The main reason to buy a cellular Apple Watch is that it can remain connected when you leave your iPhone behind. With a Wi-Fi or cellular connection you can: Make and receive phone calls. Send and receive messages. Receive notifications. Stream Apple Music, podcasts and audiobooks. Read email. Use Maps. Use apps and services that require an internet connection. You dont need cellular for everything, though. Away from your iPhone, a GPS Apple Watch can still track workouts and activity, collect GPS data, monitor health, use Apple Pay and play music, podcasts and audiobooks stored on the Watch. That distinction is important. You dont need cellular simply because you want to go running without your iPhone. A GPS Apple Watch can still record your run. Cellular becomes useful if you also want to receive calls and messages, stream rather than download your music, use Maps and other online services, or remain contactable while your iPhone is at home. Of course, if you use cellular on your Apple Watch to do those things you will have to pay for the data. For more information read: All the things an Apple Watch can do without an iPhone . Who should buy a cellular Apple Watch and who shouldnt? If youre unsure which version to buy, it mainly comes down to how often you expect to use your Apple Watch without your iPhone. For most people, the key question is: How often will you actually use your Apple Watch away from your iPhone and a Wi-Fi connection? If thats a regular part of how you expect to use the Watch, cellular can be worth the extra cost. If your iPhone rarely leaves your side, the GPS model provides most of the same everyday Apple Watch experience for less. If this sounds like you Choose You regularly run, cycle, exercise or go out without your iPhone and still want calls, messages, Maps, streaming and notifications GPS + Cellular You specifically want to carry your iPhone less but remain contactable GPS + Cellular You want an additional way to contact emergency services when your iPhone and Wi-Fi arent available GPS + Cellular Youre buying an Apple Watch for a child or family member without their own iPhone GPS + Cellular Youre buying an Apple Watch Ultra 4 Cellular is included ; decide whether you need to activate a plan Your iPhone is almost always with you GPS You mainly want health, fitness and workout tracking GPS Youre happy to download music and podcasts before exercising GPS Keeping the purchase price and ongoing costs as low as possible is your priority GPS Why you might want an Apple Watch with cellular Thomas Deehan / Foundry The main reason to buy an Apple Watch with cellular is the freedom to leave your iPhone behind while staying fully connected. Here are the most compelling use cases: You exercise without your iPhone Running, cycling, swimming and going to the gym are among the clearest use cases for a cellular Apple Watch. You can leave your iPhone at home but still make or receive a call, get messages and notifications, stream music and use connected services. Without cellular, you can still track your workout and listen to downloaded music. If you connect to a known Wi-Fi network, you can also access many online features. The advantage of cellular is that you arent dependent on finding Wi-Fi. You regularly leave your phone behind Cellular makes sense if one of the reasons youre buying an Apple Watch is to carry your iPhone less. You might want to go for a walk, head to the gym, walk the dog or run an errand without taking your phone while still remaining contactable. If your iPhone is almost always in your pocket or bag, however, the Watch will normally use its connection instead, making the cellular hardware largely redundant. You want connectivity for emergencies Cellular can also provide reassurance when youre exercising or walking without your iPhone. Fall Detection and Crash Detection can detect an incident without an iPhone, but the Watch requires a network connection to contact emergency services. A cellular Watch can use its own mobile connection when Wi-Fi isnt available. There is an important exception with the Ultra 4. The Ultra 4 also has satellite connectivity and supports Emergency SOS and Find My location sharing via satellite when cellular and Wi-Fi arent available. The Series 12 does not have built-in satellite connectivity. Youre setting up an Apple Watch for a child A cellular model is also the right choice when setting up an Apple Watch for a child or another family member who doesnt have their own iPhone. Apple Watch For Your Kids , previously called Family Setup, allows a family members Apple Watch to be configured from another persons iPhone. A cellular plan allows calls, messages and location sharing when the Watch is away from the managing iPhone. This makes the cellular SE 3 an attractive option for children because its Apples least expensive current Apple Watch. Why you might not need a cellular Apple Watch For a large number of Apple Watch owners, their iPhone is almost always nearby. When your iPhone is in your pocket or bag, your Apple Watch can already use its connection for calls, messages, notifications and internet access. You arent gaining much from the Watchs cellular hardware during that time. And even when your iPhone isnt nearby, your Apple Watch can use known Wi-Fi networks for many online features. There are also plenty of things that dont require either cellular or Wi-Fi. You can track workouts and activity, collect GPS data, monitor your health, use Apple Pay and play downloaded media. So ask yourself how often you actually expect to leave your iPhone behind. If the answer is hardly ever, paying more for the cellular Watch and paying your network provider a monthly fee is unlikely to offer much practical benefit. For more help deciding which Apple Watch to buy read our guide to the best Apple Watch . Does cellular use more Apple Watch battery? Jim Martin / Foundry Yes. Cellular connectivity can drain an Apple Watch battery faster, particularly when youre using the Watch independently of your iPhone for extended periods. Apple itself says battery life varies according to cellular coverage . Weve also found in previous Apple Watch testing that battery life is affected by how much cellular connectivity you use. Thats because an Apple Watch is most power-efficient when its connected to its paired iPhone over Bluetooth. When the iPhone isnt available, Wi-Fi uses less power than a mobile network. Signal strength matters too. Apple advises connecting to a strong Wi-Fi or cellular signal where possible because maintaining a connection in an area with poor coverage can consume more battery power. That means activities such as making calls, streaming music or using online apps over cellular for long periods are likely to have a greater impact than receiving the occasional message or notification. Buying a GPS + Cellular model doesnt mean the Watch will constantly use its mobile connection, however. Apple Watch automatically chooses the most power-efficient available connection: Bluetooth to your iPhone first, followed by Wi-Fi and then cellular when the other connections arent available. Interestingly, Apple has sometimes fitted cellular versions of a Watch with a larger battery than the equivalent GPS model. The 44mm first-generation Apple Watch SE, for example, had a 1.129Wh battery in its cellular version compared with 0.994Wh in the GPS model. This hasnt been consistent across Apple Watch generations, however, and many later GPS and cellular models have used identical-capacity batteries. Apple rates the Series 12 for up to 24 hours of normal use and the Ultra 4 for up to 50 hours, while the SE 3 is rated for up to 18 hours. Weve also seen much better real-world results from the Series 12. In our first full battery test , the Series 12 lasted 51 hours before running out of power. However, battery life varies significantly according to how the Watch is used, and this wasnt a test of sustained cellular use. If youre trying to extend battery life, Low Power Mode can help. When your iPhone isnt nearby, Low Power Mode normally turns off Wi-Fi and cellular connections along with incoming calls and notifications. If you open an app that requires data, however, the Watch can temporarily reconnect so the app works. If you expect to spend many hours away from your iPhone making calls, streaming or using data over cellular, battery life should therefore be a more significant consideration when choosing between GPS and GPS + Cellular. If maximum battery endurance matters more to you than remaining connected when your iPhone isnt nearby, the GPS-only model removes cellular as a potential source of additional power consumption.
