Three Years of Trolling Over Weight Gain: Swara Bhasker Says She Now Owns the Labels

Actor Swara Bhasker has spoken out against the online trolling and body-shaming she has faced over the weight she gained after pregnancy. Bhasker and her husband Fahad Ahmad welcomed their daughter, Raabiyaa, on September 23, 2023. Since becoming a mother, the actor has frequently faced comments from social media users targeting her physical appearance and postpartum weight. During her appearance on the show Rise and Fall on Saturday, Bhasker took a pointed approach to the criticism. She wore a sari paired with a blouse featuring the word moti (fat) written on it. Speaking to Sehwag about the trolling she has experienced since the birth of her daughter, Bhasker said: Meri beti teen saal ki hai. Aur teen saal se mujhe itna logon neajnabiyon ne, jinko mai bilkul nahi janti, social media pe, yahan wahan, Recalling some of the names she has been called because of her postpartum weight, the actor said: Moti hogayi hai, bhains hogayi hai, gai hogayi hai, hippo hogayi hai, haathi hogayi hai. Maine kaha mai sab hogayi hoon. Ab mai aapke in saare terminology ko accept karke own karti hoon. Bhasker has previously addressed criticism over her post-pregnancy appearance. In May, she shared a photograph of herself from 2018 on social media and responded to comments comparing her then appearance with her current one. She wrote: This is a hill I will repeatedly die on! The kind of rage and anger Ive encountered in the last few years because my body has changed after childbirth and because I refuse to lose the weight on the timeline of strangers on the internet.. is bizarre! I want to say it- again and again. Womens bodies have more purpose than sexualisation and being hangers for glamour, The actor also said she had consciously decided not to try to bounce back to her pre-pregnancy body after becoming a mother. She wrote: After I had a baby (now 2.5 years ago) i chose NOT TO BOUNCE BACK. Because once you have a baby- theres no back- you are a parent for the rest of your life. Life changes fundamentally, and thats okay. Of course, we miss our old life, our young and free version, our thinner and tighter bodies, but to mindlessly keep idealising our younger, thinner selves- to force our bodies to bounce back or here and there and fit into versions of your past that are gone, is a kind of cruelty.
